Book Description

Did you know that Carbohydrates supply most of the energy your body uses? You should drink at least 5 glasses of water every day? The mineral iron is found in foods cooked in iron pans? 3 slices of bread contain 200 calories?

Jam-packed with fascinating facts such as the ones above, Good Enough to Eat is uniquely designed to satisfy kids' love of food, and their curiosity about how their bodies work.

This book offers all of the basics found in an adult nutrition guide in a format designed specifically for kids. Lizzy Rockwell has filled Good Enough to Eat with funny speech bubbles, detailed illustrations, and an engaging cast of children who munch their way across the pages while explaining everything from why your body needs protein to the food pyramid and how to use it. You'll even find hands-on experiments that test food for fat and reveal the differences between starch and sweet carbohydrates, and recipes using the nutritious foods that children need in their daily diet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Superb introduction to healthy eating for preschoolers
I checked this book out of the library for my five-year old, and she loved it. She got really excited about this book and seemed to love how the pictures illustrated the text. There was this one particular set of pictures that referred to PROTEIN. The first picture showed a girl on the farm doing chores and talking about how protein helps you be stronger. In the background, there were the meat sources of protein: a cow, a lamb, a chicken, etc. On the next page, a couple of kids were next to a beanstalk, talking about other sources of protein--like beans. The pictures were very colorful and eye-pleasing and I loved how the author used word bubbles from the kids in the book to explain--in simple language and with everyday examples, what each nutritional component does for the body. She let the characters teach. In one part of the book, they put on costumes to show which vitamins do what! This book made it really easy for me to discuss the importance of eating right to my child, and--after six months--she still remembers things like, "eggs have protein in them and protein makes you strong!" [her words] There are simple recipes in the back, which we didn't test, but I look forward to trying them out once we get the book again. The only things about this book I didn't like was the lack of scientific activities, but I'm looking into other titles to supplement (like, Janice VanCleave), and a lack of "discussion starters". Otherwise, I think this book is a wonderful way to start your own discussions on healthy eating. One of the great things about smaller children is their need for repetition, so I'll get the chance to come up with a new discussion every time we read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeping it simple
How do you go about explaining something to your children that you have difficulty understanding yourself? Well Barklay and Eve make the process easier. This wonderful book describes the most complicated procedures in simple terms without talking down to children. I found the illustrations and story content charming and informative. Children will find the common hair loss of cancer a much less frightening process when they see the fun that Eve has with a wig. While dealing with cancer can't be made easier, Barklay and Eve can make explaining it easier. ... Read more

Book Description

1793, Philadelphia. The nation"s capital and the largest city in North America is devastated by an apparently incurable disease, cause unknown . . .
In a powerful, dramatic narrative, critically acclaimed author Jim Murphy describes the illness known as yellow fever and the toll it took on the city"s residents, relating the epidemic to the major social and political events of the day and to 18th-century medical beliefs and practices. Drawing on first-hand accounts, Murphy spotlights the heroic role of Philadelphia"s free blacks in combating the disease, and the Constitutional crisis that President Washington faced when he was forced to leave the city—and all his papers—while escaping the deadly contagion. The search for the fever"s causes and cure, not found for more than a century afterward, provides a suspenseful counterpoint to this riveting true story of a city under siege.

Thoroughly researched, generously illustrated with fascinating archival prints, and unflinching in its discussion of medical details, this book offers a glimpse into the conditions of American cities at the time of our nation"s birth while drawing timely parallels to modern-day epidemics. Bibliography, map, index.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
Finally, a great nonfiction book written for children. It keeps ones interest all the way through, and is a great companion with "Fever 1793."

5-0 out of 5 stars An Intense and interesting read
Jim Murphy amazes, educates and horrifies with his wonderful Siebert Award winning and Newberry Honor Book, AN AMERICAN PLAGUE. Murphy deftly describes the political, social, medical and economic conditions that allowed the yellow fever epidemic to devastate Philadelphia in the 1790s in a way that is truly terrifying but nonetheless intriguing.
I couldn't put it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shining example of nonfiction for young people
Jim Murphy's award winning book is a wonderful example of literary nonfiction for young people that's every bit as compelling and well-researched as that for adults. Other recent noteworthy books are Candace Fleming's innovative Ben Franklin's Almanac, Russell Freedman's In Defense of Liberty, and Deborah Hopkinson's fascinating book on immigrants in New York City, SHUTTING OUT THE SKY.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth reading
This book is a great read for several reasons:
1. It tells a compelling story.
2. It is written in an informal style that helps makes you feel like you are there as events unfold, and without academic historical jargon or obscure references.
3. The use of archival images and newspapers is terrific.
4. It made me interested to read some of the source documents consulted by the author, such as first person diaries of the time.
5. Lots of fascinating facts for people interested in how American started out as goverment and the challenges it faced.
6. It shows how relatively ignorant science and medicine was back then (bloodletting was still basic medical practice).
7. The book does a good job of giving the details of the story from many different perspectives--from the pauper in the street, to George Washington's frustration.
8. It makes you think about how our goverment now to a big epidemic.
9. It shows how heroic and noble the first African-Americans were at that time, and what a vital service they provided this country through their skill, dedication, compassion and piety.

A few minor quibbles with the editing: I found a glaring typo in a chapter heading, and some of the narrative is repetitious.

On the whole a very good book for young and older people alike.

A disclaimer: It turns out that the author of this book lives in my relatively small town, but I have never met him, don't know what he looks like, but thank him just the same.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating book
In August 1793, the capital of the new United States, Philadelphia, was in the grip of a heat wave. Suddenly, in the poorer quarters of the city, the poor began to sicken and die in the most horrible of ways. Many people fled, while other worked to stem the tide of illness. Armed with an archaic (and downright wrong) theory of medicine, the city could do little but suffer as this disease raged throughout the city, carrying off some 4-5,000 people (out of a population of 51,000). This is the story of that plague (Yellow Fever), its effects on the country, and its possible future.

This book was written for younger readers, but is detailed and informative enough to interest even the oldest of readers. I found the book to be quite fascinating, and learned a good deal about the state of medicine at the time. The final chapter, which attempts to scare the reader with the idea of a return of Yellow Fever, I found to be a bit out-of-focus. Nonetheless, I found this to be a fascinating book, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the early days of the American Republic. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT RESOURCE ABOUT ALZHEIMER'S FOR CHILDREN
Contrary to popular belief, Ms. Shriver's book wasn't actually the first book that was geared toward children in an attempt to help them have a better understanding about Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Ann Frantti wrote a book entitled "Grandma's Cobwebs" several years ago on this same topic. Not only does her book explain the workings of this dreadful disease, it also has a supplementary booklet that has FAQs to help parents with any questions their children may have.

Unfortunately, Dr. Frantti doesn't have the benefit of Ms. Shriver's "star power" in terms of getting publicity about "Grandma's Cobwebs," but her book is excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent For Children -1st Lady Shriver WINS!!!
Well written with warmth, Maria Shriver does an excellent job of helping grandchildren understand-what even some adults may not fully know- about the battlefield of the aged minds.
The Knowledge we as Authors share, produces a well informed future generation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely Resource
It is hard enough for an adult to understand what it all means when a loved one is stricken with Alzheimer's, let alone a child. Maria has done a marvelous job of explaining it all in terms that will help your children, as well as yourself, understand, accept and cope with one of the hardest times a family can face.

4-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
It is good to have a book to read to children that will help them cope with a grandparent with Altzheimer's! I especially liked the expression of the many feelings that the book characters had. It made talking about feelings that we have easier. I think we will be reading this from time to time to keep in touch with each other through the process of this disease and how it relates to our family. Thank you for carrying it. ... Read more

Could you possibly have twenty feet of small intestines?

Where does that bad-smelling gas come from?

Your digestive system is out of sight and out of mind -- until things don't go right. Then you may wonder how these important organs work!

You'll find the answers in Seymour Simon's smooth, well-organized, and fascinating introduction to the digestive system. 3-0 out of 5 stars not quite what I wanted
This is a short book that shows the hair basics such as braids and buns. If you know how to do this already then get a different book. However, if you don't know how then this is helpful. It does not give any tips on using a curling iron, gel, or more advanced styles. I was a little disappointed in this book but it did show me how to do a bun that I did not know how to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grown up w/long hair
I'm an adult w/long hair, who's always wanted to find out how these gorgeous hairstyles are done, so I bought this for myself. My older sisters & mom always did my hair, but could not explain how they did it. Now I finally have found a book that explains it.

I've done many of the hairstyles in this book, and have gotten lots of compliments on it.

I'd suggest this book to both kids and adults. Awesome because it actually explains how to do the styles in a way I understand with drawings, etc. AWESOME BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars American Girl's Best!
Once again, I loved this book. Probably because I love to do my hair. Other girls that have a passion for hair would feel this way, too. I reccoment try another book if you have short or curly hair because most of these work on strait and long hair. This book's sooooo cool because it has like, every hairstyle you could imagine including the popular-unpopular 'on and off' "Messy Buns" which are two buns on top of your head. They even have a rope braid!! They even have hair ideas that are made-up stuff!! They show you stuff like how to get a hair cut properly and how to curl and part your hair which is helpful if you are just learning how to do your hair. If you are in that case, you should probably get this book to get you started and give you some ideas. If you are an individial, like myself, and none of your friends have this. . .buy it!! If you are one of those people, don't copy other's people's hair and get your own ideas from this book!! It's sooo cool! All the hairstyles even have classical names like 'The Brady Bunch'. It also has quizzes!!! This book is one of American Girl's Best. I would also reccomend that if you are buying this book as a gift, have the person open it last so they can go home once everything's done and do their hair so they don't have to wait as long. Another suggestion and my final one:

If you love hair, then you should ABSOLUTLY buy this great book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A PERFECT BOOK FOR GIRLS WHO LIKE TO DO THEIR HAIR
If you love American girl books and like to do your hair, this is the book for you! I love my hair so much, but I don't like my hair to be too simple. So, I bought this book. It also have stylist secrets and tips to make your hair styles just perfect. It helps you to find your natural part in your hair and how to make zig-zag part. 5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed our life!
This book has been written for children, by a Child Psychologist who specializes in anxiety disorders. It uses images and metaphors and makes Obsessive-Compulsive-Disorders really clear and easily understandable for everybody. Not only children!

I grew up under the obsessive care of a mother suffering O.C.D. Nobody in the family, including her, knew what was the matter with her. When she finally was diagnosed with O.C.D. we were no longer children anymore, but this book still helped us understand her struggle and help her with her treatment.

This book is full of hope, optimism and love. It truly changed our lives for the better!

5-0 out of 5 stars A view of life from an OCD child's perspective
"Up and Down the Worry Hill" is a children's book about Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). In the book we see the world through the eyes of Casey, a child with OCD. It effectively illustrates the internal dialogue and struggles of Casey and the difficulties such children face. For a child with OCD it teaches them that they are not alone and someone understands them. The end of the story helps the child to understand what will happen if they seek treatment via a child therapist and the use of behavior therapy. The book effectively illustrates that the problem is not something wrong with the child, but is something that just happens sometimes to some people. It is a highly recommended text for anyone with a child with OCD or to help children with a friend with OCD to understand their self better. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Gregory the Terrible Eater
Gregory likes normal food; eggs, vegetables, fruit, and fish. Normal food, for a normal kid, right? Wrong! You see Gregory isn't exactly normal well not in his family's eyes. To them, normal food is tin cans, boxes, tires, and mostly garbage. Well that is normal food...for a goat. You see, Gregory is a goat and since he likes eggs, vegetables, and fruits his parents think he is sick. But Gregory just wants to eat what he likes. So since Gregory and his parents haven't had dinner together in a while (and mothers like to have dinner with they're kids) they decide to take him to Doctor Ram. Doctor Ram has treated picky eaters before but not like Gregory. Yet, he comes up with a solution. That is to feed Gregory what he wants but to sneak in a little bit of garbage every meal... It is a good moral to the story I think it might teach kids to try stuff before they decide whether or not the like it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gregory, the Terrible Eater
Gregory is a kid just like you and me. He loves carrots, fish, orange juice, lettuce, and ice cream. Oh, and did I mention that Gregory is a goat?
Gregory's parents tried to raise a nice "kid." They feed him tin cans, tires, and bottle caps, but Gregory, the terrible eater, refuses to eat any dinner. In a desperate attempt to find out what's wrong with him, Gregory's parents take him to Dr. Ram, and tells them what to do...
Well naturally, along with every story children's story I have been able to get a hold of, "Gregory, the Terrible Eater," has a very charming moral. Ever had a child who refused to eat his or her dinner, maybe you're looking for a way to delight your child with a pleasing story, or maybe you have a son named "Greg." Either way, I can assure you that you'll love this story written by Mitchell Sharmat.
As far as the pictures go (every child loves stories with pictures in them!) Jose Aruego and Ariane Dewey have made the story come to life with brilliant colors and vivid drawings. In conclusion, you have nothing to lose with this adorable tale of Gregory, the Terrible Eater!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very amusing topsy-turvy story.
Gregory the Goat has an eating problem. He is a finicky eater. While his family chews contentedly away on good goat stuff-tin cans, empty cartons, used ties and so on, Gregory is busy eating "revolting" food from a goats point of view-fresh vegetables, fruit, salad, soup and so on.

What to do? At their wit's end, Gregory's parents concoct a plan-and the fun begins.

A very imaginative and engaging read, with fun dialog, bright, pleasing illustrations and a quirky sense of humor.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good story for your young book worm!
I read this story as a child at the school library (after seeing it on Reading Rainbow) and enjoyed it very much. Now I'm an adult and have collected the books I remember from my childhood for a bit of nostalgia. Gregory is one of them. I have also collected it for my nephew. It's a sweet story and easy to read, perfect for any child.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book!
As a young child I loved this book. It's creative, imaginative, and quite silly. Occasionally, even as a young adult, I read this book when I am sorting through items from my childhood. 5-0 out of 5 stars This book moved me to tears
I came across this book in a local children's hospital resource library. The first page describes a speeding race car with no brakes, and how it might go off the road or even crash. Page two goes on to draw a parellel between this race car, and and explains that having ADHD is a lot like being a race car with no brakes, 'You have a great engine with lots of thinking power, and a good, strong body, but no brakes'. I broke down crying right there in the middle of the library - it was like finally getting inside my child's head and knowing how he feels and why he just doesn't seem to know when to quit.

As my son and I read it together, he was also drawn in by these parallels, and fascinated by the sections that explain how the brain works, and the theories behind what causes neurobiological ADHD (as opposed to other possible causes of ADHD, like head trauma, lead exposure, etc). He is seven, and there were several words he was not familiar with, but the book explains 'synapses' and 'neurotransmitters' well, and a brief explanation from me on other vocab words was all it took for him to grasp the concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Powerful Resource for the Parents of ADHD Kids!
One of the most difficult things about parenting an ADHD child is explaining attention deficit disorder to that child. Patricia Quinn and associates have given a powerful resource to these parents - a true gift to empower them. In simple language, illustrated with eye-catching graphics, PUTTING ON THE BRAKES explains not only the nature of this disorder, but also how children and their families can learn to manage it. As an ADD Coach, I find this to be the most important resource that I can put into the hands of parents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Putting on the Brakes
A very good book for children with ADHD. It's easy to read and gets to the point, something all ADHD children need. It explains what ADHD is, that others have the same problems, and how it effects their home and school lives. It gives some wonder information about how they can help theirselves. I have read it to both my children with ADHD as well as ADHD children I work with and they all enjoy it, and can relate to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars ADHD - From a different point of view
From a parents point of view, I really enjoyed reading your books. I felt it put me closer with my son, since I could better understand what the ADHD was about from a different point of view. It was like being inside the mind of a child with ADHD. When I react now, I think a lot more before making a rash outburst, because I know my son will be thinking "Gosh - whats the big problem?". Thank-you for letting me get closer to understanding what a child with ADHD goes through. ... Read more

The successful father and son franchise of Dr. Phil and Jay McGraw continues with The Ultimate Weight Solution for Teens. Here, Jay translates the seven keys that made Dad's diet book a mega seller into a smart, supportive teen manifesto for tackling unwanted pounds, body image problems and eating disorders. He uses examples and web postings drawn from his survey with 10,000 teenagers to underline a powerful message: "Weight is not about the size or your Levis or a number on the scale. It's about whether you use food to take care of your body or to abuse it." McGraw's approach is mind over milkshake, skewering the negative thoughts ("I can't have fun if I have to watch what I eat") that keep teens from experiencing "weight freedom." He examines self-defeating filters (denial, approval seeking , perfection, comparison)that distort a healthy approach to weight and also suggests a "peer and parent response plan" to avoid sabotage. He teaches how to scan the environment for eating cues. Even when McGraw rounds up the usual suspects--exercise and a sermon about sugar--he conveys a fresh and relevant message of self-knowledge.The wisdom of McGraw's approach to teen readers is this focus on thoughts and feelings, rather than on the third helping of pizza. --Barbara Mackoff ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well Done!
By jove I think he's got it. this is really quite good. I was not sure what to expect. I really liked Dr. Phil's The Ultimate Weight Solution and thought that it was a great idea when his son quickly followed with one about teen's obsession with weight. Jay explains how the pressures and changes that are part and parcel to getting older take their toll on the teenage body. Fat piles on much quicker, or maybe for the first time, during your teeanage years.
I bought this book with my daughter in mind and I am really happy with the results that I am already seeing. She has been reading it for a few days and she said that she agrees with a lot of what he says. I think it was a great idea to approach this very touchy subject with a young voice like Jay's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Really hit the nail when it comes to helping teenagers cope witht their weight problem. Jay addressess everything from how to have a positive out look on life to ways to start taking control of your weight. I was surprised at how much sense it made to me. It was like this book was written with me in mind. It addressed all the feelings i had towards myself and my weight and made me realized that their more to me than just how much i weighed. This book was surprising well written. Jay is a really talented writer and I thought this was just a knock off of Dr. Phils book, but this book really addressess teens and their issues in a way that is easy to relate to. Well Done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great coaching tool
Using actual discussions of tough issues teens face day to day around the abuse of food is excellent. The topic of food abuse in young adults and even preteens needs to see the light of day. The number of kids battling serious eating disorders is going up not down and the trend really is frightening.

I picked this up just to see what Dr. Phil's prodigy might have to say about teen weight issues. I expected to be cynically unimpressed and found the lay out was engaging. Each chapter was well thought out and well written. I did not get the impression that this book was slapped together to make a buck. I actually thought the focus was on quality content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Follows in the tradition of great father-son writers
Illya Tolstoy established an impressive writing career apart from his father. And Brian Herbert successfully continued the Dune series after his father passed on. And Andre Dubus III made his father proud with House of Sand and Fog. And now, Dr. Jay McGraw continues the grand tradition. Dr. Phil has obviously trained his son well in the family business. Like his dad, Jay writes with the wisdom and folksy down-home style reminiscent of Mark Twain or Will Rogers. And also like his dad, Jay also has a failrly serious weight problem himself, as is very apparent from the cover photo. But as the elder McGraw is fond of saying, "Yern dont have to be a cow, to tell bubba how eggs is made." Jay takes his dad's tried and true formula, and tailors it to sell to the nations teens. His emphasis on keeping a positive self-image, sprinkled with bits of discipline, proper diet and excercise may be considered a radical approach to weight loss. But it is a message that must be heard by today's youth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book! Really Helpful!

This book is very fun and educational too! It has topics about farts, toe cheese, sneezing and other gross stuff. I learned alot from this book. For example when I wanted to stop a sneeze, I used to hold my nose. Then I learned how bad that was for you. Now I put my finger under my nose to stop a sneeze. I absolutly loved this book! You should buy it! It is a great book for anyone who likes gross stuff. Now, I'm a girl and not very interested in gross stuff, but this book is a exeption!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book!
I purchased this book for my 11 year old step daughter. I didn't tell her that I bought it but when it came in the mail I just gave it to her and told her she needed to read it and then we could talk about it. She absolutely LOVED it and read it all the first night she had it. It is very age appropriate I think and doesn't give away too much information. Very good buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars College Student Review
I read this book in a child development course. I think it is an excellent book to give a child who has no mother or female role model to explain womanly changes. This book thoroughly describes a woman's period and all the details that men cannot describe if they tried. Such as, how to put in a tampon properly, natural cramp remedies, and symptoms of PMS. Of course this book is an excellent source for all teens with or without mother-figures, however, if you are a single father or in a gay marraige with a child - this is the book to give your daughter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Pre Teen Girls
I bought this book for my daughter when she was 11 right after her first period. She was very happy to have it and carried it around for days reading and re-reading it. She shared it with several of her classmates and one even kept it all summer. She happily got it back (in a very used state) and is referencing it again. I tried to prepare her for the changes but this book covered things I forgot (which she was quick to point out). I recommend this for any parent who wants their daughter to have a clear and concise guide of what to expect with puberty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Period. Deserves an Exclamation Point
Period. is a truly wonderful book. I recommend that all young girls(and their parents)read it before they begin to menstruate. It does a great job of normalizing the process and the variety of feelings and sensations that accompany it. Illustrations represent girls of different sizes and ethnicities. This text can put girls on the path of celebrating the unique things that make them women.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for all ages, well written, well illustrated
The information is accurate and written in an easy-to-understand format. The line drawings are interesting without being distracting or confusing. The book sticks to one topic, and one topic only. This reassuring and informative book can be enjoyed by girls of any age. Since girls are maturing early, and need this information at such a young age, I appreciate how this book could be shared with a young child without introducing sexual issues that the child isn't ready for. ... Book Description

Togo wasn't meant to be a sled dog. He was too feisty and independent to make a good team member, let alone a leader. But Togo is determined, and when his trainer, Leonhard Seppala, gives him a chance, he soon becomes one of the fastest sled dogs in history! His skills are put to the ultimate test, though, when Seppala and his team are called on to make the now-famous run across the frozen Arctic to deliver the serum that will save Alaska from a life-threatening outbreak of diphtheria.

In the style of Akiak, winner of the Irma S. and James H. Black Award for Excellence in Children's Literature, along with five state awards, Robert J. Blake's detailed, carefully researched oil paintings complete the story of the adventure that inspired the internationally famous Iditarod race.

5-0 out of 5 stars Togo the real hero of the Iditarod
I read this book in my third grade class. It is an exciting story about the sled dog Togo. Togo has the heart of a real hero because he wanted more than anything to lead a dog team. This book makes you cheer for Togo. I used to think Balto was the hero of the Iditarod until I read this book. I love the beautiful pictures drawn by the author. It is a book I will keep forever.
