5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for kids
This book really helped our son. I was so glad to find it given his allergy and he easily related to the child in the book. The story describes a realistic situation of a kid taking a dare and the consequences that could result. What was really great about it is that we were able to use the story as a good starting point to talk with our son about well intentioned, or not, friends and adults and what he can and should do in different situations. (It is amazing how many times we've encountered people that think, "Just one little peanut can't hurt.") We ended up giving a copy to our son's teacher who used it in his classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful, not scary!
This book helped a friend's five year old better understand her peanut allergy. She liked the bright pictures and identified with the main character, whose allergy to peanuts made him feel alone until he learned to deal with it. I've read reader reviews, and it seems that kids either love this book or are afraid of its depiction of an anaphylactic reaction. I think a lot of the reaction may depend upon the parent, and on the way he or she presents the message. For this particular little girl, the book was wonderful. It's a gift I would give again.

1-0 out of 5 stars nightmares!!
After reading this book to my five year old he woke up with nightmares. The book shows a kids "proving" to his friends that he can be around peanuts, with dire consequences. To my kid, who has lived through anaphylactic reactions, this brought up many unpleasant memories. Parents of young kids BEWARE.

1-0 out of 5 stars From a kid whose been there, done that
I've read this book and i'm a little bit disturbed by this book. I'm a twelve year old boy with severe peanut allergies. I'll admit i was a little bit of an outkast, but not because of my allergy! and i think that every peanut-allergic [allergic to anything for that matter] kindergartener has thought about eating or trying to eat peanuts. and this book ENCOURAGES it! i think that's a little dumb. thank you for your time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to read to children
I thought this book was great. Children could relate to the story and most of all this story reminds me how I found out my daughter was allergic to peanut butter. She was 5, when her class made bird feeders. That day our lives changed, just like Sam's did. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars It's weirded-out time!
The other day I caught a glance at this book at a local close-out store, and decided to give it a look. After reading it from cover to cover in a matter of a minute (I don't think there's more than 100 words in it anyway), and tryin' out the "flush" noise dealie, I was kinda creeped out by it all. Especially disquieting was the flush sound, which dragged on a bit too long. And the addition of some kid's way-too-gleeful laughter near the end didn't help matters. As for the text and illustrations, there's nothing all that shocking here; I've seen far more graphic & descriptive stuff in other toilet-training tomes. Put it all together, and you've got something that further bolsters my assertion that I'm never, ever EVER gonna have kids. #ell, I can hardly stand most adults-- ya think I'm gonna have the patience and maintain the proper temperament to teach some little ankle-biting hellspawn how to use the can properly? I don't think so...

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much flushing sound
I bought this book for my son who is almost 2. It tells the story okay, but the flushing sound is overdone. The sound goes on and on and finishes with laughter. It interferes with the flow of the story. My son doesn't even have the patience for it. I'm sure the book will be helpful to some degree.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son loves this book
I got this book for my one year old son and he just adores it. He carries it with him everywhere and it's always by the potty with some other books also. This book has helped him with potty training. This is a great buy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, but has battery problems
My son loves this book. It really is helping us with toilet training. My big complaint is that you cannot replace the battery in the "flushing" button. I had to buy another copy because my son was upset when the battery died. I cannot see any way to replace the battery. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for this age group
Six year old Emma isn't very happy about the idea of having a new brother or sister but when Emma and her dad start thinking of all the things that they can do with the new baby, Emma becomes excited at the prospect of being a big sister. When her dad comes home and tells Emma that her new brother, Isaac, has Down syndrome, Emma worries that he won't be able to do any of the fun things that she has imagined. As Emma and her dad think back over all the things they wanted to do with the new baby, they realize together that as long as they are patient and helped him when he needed it, there wasn't anything he couldn't do. This is a reassuring story for young children bewildered by Down syndrome and what it means for their relationship with their new sibling. This is truly a wonderful story. Your child will ask you why you are crying after you read it to them. Of all the books for this age group, this book is by far the best.

4-0 out of 5 stars MUCH better than Maria Shriver's story
This is a great, simple, accurate, sweet book about a little girl who has a brother with Down syndrome. It explains that kids with Down syndrome need more time and patience, but they all can learn to do the things other kids do. I highly recommend this book to kids with Down syndrome and their siblings, friends, neighbors and relatives. It's good on its own and as an alternative to What's Wrong With Timmy?, a book that covers the same topic in a much less appealing manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Insightful Story Simply Told
I originally purchased We'll Paint the Octopus Red to help me explain Down Syndrome to my older daughter when my younger daughter was born: the whys and how comes the little one needed more attention. The story is simply told. The only child will now become an older child. She and her younger sibling will have so much fun together, her dad advises. But on the day that the baby is born, the dad is sad and tells his daughter that the baby has Down Syndrome. The daughter, in her innocence, carefully reviews all the plans that her dad said she could do with her baby brother. After each example, the dad advises that they could still do the activity with a little patience. Slowly, the daughter teaches the dad and the reader that children with Down Syndrome can do almost anything with love, patience, understanding and the opportunity to try. The book not only gave guidance to my husband and me, but also was helpful in breaking down old stereotypes and ideas held by our parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I bought this book for my 6 year old niece who has a younger sister with Down Syndrome. So far everyone she has shown this book to has bought it.

It's a wonderful book and I still can't get through it without crying. Such a simple and compassionate story about a little girl understanding the differences in her brother with down syndrome. A story that involves her father explaining down and a child's simple understanding that her new brother can still do the same things.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very needed...
There are many plusses to this book. That it was even written and is available is a HUGE plus. It is a message that children need to hear...over and over and over...That it is their body. That they have the right to feel *good* or *not good* about what someone is doing to it...and that they can say that, LOUDLY.

I do wish it was more visually *interesting* as it really is geared to younger childen. It could use more color to keep up the interest. Unfortunately, I tended to lose my son's interest when I was reading this... When he was young a *message book* wasn't strong enough reason to sit still, he visually needed the pictures. That said, I still did read this when from time to time. I would just pick up where I *lost* him the previous time.

The importance of this message can't be underscored enough and I don't think that the lack of visual *punch* is enough of a reason to not buy this. On the contrary, I think you should find every way you can to teach this message to your children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent empowerment for any child
When I worked with abused kids, I came across a wonderful paperback book called "It's My Body" in which a little kid talks about how he/she (drawing is quite gender-neutral) likes giving and receiving some touches, like when Daddy holds his hand or when he climbs into Mommy's lap. He doesn't like giving or receiving some touches, like when GreatAunt Sally hugs him too tight or when someone he doesn't know very well wants him to give them a kiss. If he receives or is asked to give a touch he doesn't like, he says, "Don't do that. I don't like it!" or "I won't do that. I don't like it!" (I believe it mentioned some necessary touches like seeing the doctor...)

We took the book in to my son's pre-K and read it to the class, and all the kids got to chime in and say in a big loud voice, "Don't do that. I don't like it!" They loved it. It is a very non-threatening book, but it allows the child to practice noncompliance in a big loud voice with lots of approval from trusted adults.

Most child molesters select their victims based on the victim's compliance. A young child is naturally reluctant to refuse the demands of an adult. If you train the child from babyhood that he is not only allowed but encouraged to state his noncompliance with some demands on his body, you have given the child a tool to protect himself. A loud refusal attracts attention, which is the LAST thing a pedophile wants, and it may well scare off a predator.

Is it sometimes embarrassing for the parent? Yes! When GreatAunt Sally tries to hug your 3-year-old child and he loudly proclaims, "Don't do that. I don't like it!" you do have a little explaining to do.... When you reach out to give your four-year-old a kiss and he says, "Don't do that. I don't want kisses anymore," it is *very* hard to catch yourself and calmly say, "OK, it's your body and you have the right to decide that." (It was certainly hard for me!)

This is a wonderful book to help any parent make his child less vulnerable to abuse, either physical or sexual. It is very easy to read with your child, very non-threatening, and can be quite fun. I highly recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's My Body review
This book is a good effort & very simply based. However, the illustrations are very plain & non-colorful. It was not very sucessful in keeping my child's interest & attention. It is not specific about good/bad-touch examples, but more about how one might feel about them. Unfortunately, I think a child's feelings are often quite confused in regards to this issue, especially when programmed in a continual incestual relationship. So, the message in this book might not be understood by a young child. It could be a helpful book in some cases, but I'm looking for something more helpful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for 4 Year Old!
I just sat down and read this to my 4 year old daughter. She was very into it. I think it's a great balance to introducing some new things she doesn't know with things she already does know. She wanted to flip through it after we finished.

I recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars A 3.5
This book is good because it divides the body up into systems -- the digestive system, the respiratory system, etc. But it's frustrating because the illustrations are a little bit too cartoonish. I can see also that it tries to illustrate that it's depicting separate systems in the body, but you never see how they all fit together. I guess I'm not sorry that I bought it to help my four-year-old understand the basics of how the body works, but it was only really useful in conjunction with other books of the same subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book for your favorite pre-schooler!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have purchased it twice, actually.

The first time was about 4 years ago, when I bought it for my (then) 4-year old son. It makes talking about human anatomy a breeze, especially for those of us who were never taught the 'real' names for our body parts until we were over age 10. I bought it again just a few months ago, for my boyfriend's 6-year old daughter. She got as much out of it as did my son.

It is simply written and very clearly illustrated! The format lends itself to learning at your child's pace ... one page at a time, or even in smaller chunks. I think this book is a must for every household with little ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book to introduce kids to their bodies
I have two girls a three year old and a one year old. The oldest has just become familiar with the fact that boys and girls are different. This book is great at teaching about the differences and similarities between boys and girls in a very basic, but informative (for a three year old) way. It also teaches about the different organs, senses, muscles, and bones in our bodies. It was perfect for me to introduce my kids to their bodies! ... Read more

Book Description

A girl's struggle amid the African AIDS pandemic.

"As soon as I get back from the shabeen, I go next door to see Mrs. Tafa. I have to ask to use her phone to let our relatives know about Sara. I'm nervous. Mrs. Tafa would like to run the world. Since she can't run the world she's decided to run our neighborhood."

So speaks sixteen-year-old Chanda, an astonishingly perceptive girl living in the small city of Bonang, a fictional city in Southern Africa.

While Mrs. Tafa's hijinks are often amusing, the fact is that Chanda's world is profoundly difficult. When her youngest sister dies, the first hint of HIV/AIDS emerges.

In this sensitive, swiftly-paced story readers will find echoes of To Kill a Mockingbird as Chanda must confront undercurrents of shame and stigma. Not afraid to explore the horrific realities of AIDS, Chanda's Secrets also captures the enduring strength of loyalty, friendship and family ties. Above all, it is a story about the corrosive nature of secrets and the healing power of truth.

Through the artful style of acclaimed author Stratton, the determination and resilience Chanda embodies will live on in readers' minds. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpless laughter
I recently read Dr Dog to my 6 year old in a book shop. We were so helpless with laughter that another customer came up and said," Whatever it is, I have to buy it!" In the end we each bought two copies. I sent one to my father for Fathers Day. It is the most hilarious book children could possibly read about personal hygiene and bad habits. If you are at all stuffy, forget it and find something else. For children and parents alike it is very funny and very rude. My kids love it and I am just about to order a new copy from Amazon as requested by my mother-in-law.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pediatric office staff howled with delight at Dr. Dog
I recently became acquainted with Dr.Dog, the drawing caught my eye because he looked like one of my dogs. My husband, who is a pediatrician, loved the book. We recently read it to our office staff at the end of our annual mandatory OSHA meeting. There was plenty of useful health advice in Dr.Dog, and the staff appreciated something so funny (and gross) not unlike many of our patients. Our office manager planned to get a copy to read (to the adults) at her two year olds birthday party! What a fun book!

5-0 out of 5 stars dr.dog rocks!!
dr.dog is a very good book and who ever likes a funny book once in a while you should read or even buy the book. If you buy this book you'll never stop laughing at the funny things that happen to the Gumboyles. It's all up to dr.dog to save his family. I myself enjoy reading this book again and again. I hope you enjoy reading dr.dog and learn a lesson about the germs and how they affect our body. Enjoy.

Leslie Hiller's world is growing smaller. It used to be large enough to include her worrisome but loving mother, her doting father, her close friend Cavette, and all the other people and places that made up her upper-class, A+ life. But now it has shrunk to the size of a dinner plate full of food--which she scrapes out her bedroom window to avoid eating. Leslie, a perfectionist who loves to be in control, finds she can't control the fear that she will somehow fail to be the perfect daughter, perfect student, and perfect friend. So she decides to master the one thing over which she is certain she has complete domain: food. Even when it becomes apparent to everyone that her severe dieting has become a life-threatening habit, Leslie still can't stop: "I want to be happy. And being happy means being thin."

Author Deborah Hautzig, who recounts her own painful battle with anorexia in a very personal and heartfelt afterword, gives Leslie a frighteningly realistic voice that will ring true to teens everywhere. First published in 1981, Second Star to the Right has risen again to give a new generation of young adults valuable insight into the addictive world of anorexia, and hope for getting out from under the cruel thumb of the disease. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent portrayal of this disease
I too suffer from Anorexia. Leslie and I could be the same person. It was great to read a book about eating disorders that didn't focus on the PHYSICAL aspects of the disease, but on the person suffering and what their life is like. I spent a month in a hospital this summer. My guess is that I'll be back in the same program fairly soon. Leslie's conflict between recovery and the disease is one which I fight every day. Finally, there's a book that describes accurately how someone with and eating disorder feels!

4-0 out of 5 stars I could completely relate with this tale of anorexia!
I, too, suffer from life-threatening anorexia nervosa. Even at my present weight of 58 pounds, thin enough can never be achieved. This past year has been extremely rough, in and out of hospitals and treatment. Just when I felt hopeless, my friend contacted me with a pile of literature on anorexia, and this book was a breath of fresh air. This disease that is killing me, the monster of anorexia, and as I read about Leslie being in the hospital, torned between recovery and falling deeper into the hands of the illness, I was crying, because it was almost as if I was reading about ME. Leslie and I are so much alike-perfectionists, kind, sincere, always wanting to be the best. This book couldnt tell it all better-please read it! please! this is a wake-up call and should not be ignored!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books ive read in a long time
I loved tihs book sooooooo much. I picked it up at the library and couldnt put it down. I could realate to the main character(leslie) and i just felt so grateful to read about someone who saw things almost the exact same way i did. Anyway, if you have ever struggled with an eating disorder i definatly recommend this book for you will be able to relate and be spell-bound by it. I hope that anyone who has been debating with themeselves over whether to read this or not will defianatly pick up the book and give it a chance. Even if you have never struggled with an eating disorder, it will allow you to get a brief glimpse into the mind of an anorexic and see that people dont choose to get like that. Anyway, i sincerly hope you pick this book up and enjoy it as much as i did.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must
Little things had stuck with me as much as this story, Leslie potrays a lot of things about youth that are still valid. The plot is vivid, Leslie's relationship with her mother is an honest representation of mom and daughter.

I would recomend this book to anyone, there are so much things you can get out of it! And its not at all preachy or moralist.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horribly overpriced! Order carefully!
Never before, in years of purchases at Amazon, have I ever actually returned an item until I purchased this book (and its companion). ($) dollars is WAY too much to charge. I bought this for my 10 year old son, but the content is skimpy and mostly drawings. There is at most a paragraph or two on a page, with huge text and lots of white space. This is more like an essay paper than a book. Thanks but no thanks...I'll take my ($) back!

5-0 out of 5 stars An easy-to-read help for stressed-out kids
This book is not only a great resource for kids who are feeling stressed, but also a humorous gentle reminder for adults in the same boat! The author identifies sources of stress and reaction to stress, tells how your body reacts to stress (i.e., heart speeds up, sweating, etc.), discusses the fight or flight reaction, discusses good ways (i.e., deep breathing, listening to relaxing music, gradual muscle relaxation, making a gratitude list, visualization, making a worry jar, doing chores, exercising, prioritizing, talking to a confident, etc.) and not-so-good ways to deal with stress (taking it out on others, running away from home, avoiding school doing drugs or drinking, etc.), and gives some examples of anonymous children who have been stressed and the inappropriate methods they used to deal with the situation. It gives a list of things to do to help avoid becoming stressed in the first place (eating healthy, exercising, getting enough sleep, etc.). The illustrations are large and appealing and the text is easy-going and even humorous while still giving serious, sound advice on how to relax. For instance, the part of the book that lists effective ways to deal with stress (giving examples of "stress messes" and aids) is called "How to Be a Panic Mechanic." I read this book to my somewhat shy, anxious 9-yr.-old daughter tonight and right away she opened up about the things that were stressing her out lately. I recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for young teens
This book uses humor, lively graphics and straightforward language to teach kids about stress and how to deal with it. It offers concrete ways to identify and then lessen stress in their lives. I highly recommend it for any young adult. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Enjoy
Although I never thought of myself as a fan of poetry or novels in verse, I have to admit this genre is growing on me.

When Kevin is forced to stay in bed for a month with mono, the prospect of missing out on baseballs games and hanging out with his friends does not excite him. But when he casually starts writing some words down on a page, and secretly borrows one of his writer father's poetry guides the exile starts to become more bearable. He slowly recovers, all the time writing about the death of his mother, past and present loves and his discovery of a whole new way of expressing himself.

If I had to describe this book in three words it would be 'short and sweet'. It's fun and cheerful (although I have to admit I didn't "get" the title until I was finished reading it). ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not For Kids Who Were Adopted
I do not like this book overall. While it does have age appropriate discussion of sex and pregnancy with a Christian focus, the text is too long in my opinion for a child of the target age to sit and listen. My primary objection is that this book is not appropriate at all for adopted children. The stories are told entirely from the point of view of a birth child. The comments and discussions focus on the idea of children being born into the family, nursing to be fed, and so on. There is a very tiny discussion about all families being "different" and a particular child not looking like his birth parents b/c he was adopted; this plus the strong focus of the text on birth families would alienate a child who was adopted rather than inform him/her. If you are looking for a facts of life book and your child was adopted, do not get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent educational book . Must for all parents
Using this book in our family provided the development of an excellent foundation to develop trust with our children. Children are aware of the special nature of parents reading stories to kids. Many parents and guardians find this a difficult subject to talk freely about. Using the story telling approach neutralises any apprehensions parents or children may have. Ruth has used questioning from the children to their parents on different things and this encourages children to ask questions. The environment of story reading and the ease at which questions arise and are answered by parents is brilliant. God's involvement in the process lets children know how special they are.

Congratulations Ruth

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on the Market for this Subject!
I was looking for a book for my 8-year-old that was to the point, descriptive (but in good taste), and informative about where babies come from. Not only did this book fit the bill, but it is also written with a God-based text which I really appreciated.

There is a storyline with a 7-year-old asking questions of her mother and father and it covers topics such as: physical differences between men and women with anatomical names, how married people show their love for each other, how fertilization occurs, how women and men help in raising children. It also briefly touches on adoption, breastfeeding, and other related topics.

An excellent choice for opening up the lines of communication on this sensitive subject with your children! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is well written yet entertaining to look through.
I ordered this book for a friend of mine who has lots of beautiful hair. Upon looking through it I knew that it was the right book for her. It has great pictures of the hairstyles presented and also gives detailed step-by-step instructions (with illustrations) on how to implement them. It is wire bound so it will stay open to any page without the assitance of paper weights or hands while styling. The styles presented are classy as well as sexy and can be used on many different types of hair. The book contains about 19 different twists and rolls and 12 different braids. Overall the book is an excellent presentation of what I was looking for and is easily understood. The only drawback may be that the quantity of braids and styles is limited. Possibly, the most defining factor for me is that I would buy it again for another friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book of Braids and Updos!
Part of the Klutz series of books and originally intended for older children and young teens, Hair has gained a following among long-haired women of all ages because it is simply the best book out there for attractive long hair styles. When I grew my hair out after many years of wearing it short, I went looking for a nice book of hairstyles for long hair. I looked everywhere I could think of with little success -until I found Hair in a bookstore's children's section. Don't be put off by the Klutz label or the fact that there is a box of ugly hair accessories physically attached to this book. It provides excellent illustrations and easy-to-understand directions for 32 hairstyles, by my count. The styles are for medium length to long hair. Some styles would be better suited for thinner hair and some for thick. The illustrations and directions are given for doing the hairstyles on yourself, not on someone else. If you are doing someone else's hair, some adjustment can be made. Covered in the book are various types of twists and rolls, tucks and buns, braids, French braids, inverse French braids (cornrows), herringbones, and ropes. There are casual styles, styles suited to work, and many that could be quite formal. Page layouts are attractive and well-designed. The book is spiral-bound so it will lie flat while you are fiddling with your hair. Highly recommended for long-haired girls and women, ages about 10 and up. Makes a great gift!

There is a cardboard protrusion on the bottom of this book to which the box of accessories is adhered. This prevents the book from being stood up on a book shelf. You can cut it off with a razor blade and a ruler. Then your book will sit perfectly on your shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm not hopeless after all!
Until this book, I pretty well figured that either I was hopeless at braiding, or that maybe my hair was just fussy, or both. But the day I got this braid, I was able to master most of the braids featured! It shows exactly how to hold your hair while you do it (no more "if I only I had another hand" moments). I also love the spiral binding. Now, I can do beautiful hairstyles with ease.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very nice book
I really like this book! I had never seen a good book about hair styles before I found this on Amazon. It has a lots of nice hair styles and I've finally learned how to do a french braid on myself, and lots of other nice styles. My younger sisters borrowed this from me, and also found some good ideas for their hair. A nice gift for yourself or a friend! Nice illustrations and easy-to-follow instructions, I've never seen so good step-by-step instructions for making nice braids and styles. The only complaint I have is that the book is made to hold a box on the bottom - that doesn't even stick! and that makes it impossible to put in the book shelf, so the first thing I did was to cut it of with a pair of scissors. It would have been nice with a few more hair styles, you just want more and more...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This book is filled with tons of beautiful, easy-to-do hairstyles. Even if you've never done a basic braid in your life, the step-by-step instructions and clear drawings will show you how to do a wide variety of styles, from the simple basic braid up to the mega-challenging French rope. The book features about 50 cool styles, for all lengths and types of hair, and all occasions, from casual to formal. The book is geared toward teens and young adults, but even people older or younger will probably enjoy trying out the styles in this book.

As an added bonus, the book comes with 3 beautiful scrunchies, and is spiral-bound so you can lay it flat while doing the styles in this book. The instructions are so detailed that complicated styles like the herringbone, french braids, and the french rope feature seperate pages showing you even how to position your hands while doing the style!

This book is the perfect guide for anyone who enjoys trying out new styles on their hair, even if they're not hairstyling experts. Highly recommended! (For a book with styles for younger children, I would recommend reading "Braids and Bows", also written by Anne Akers Johnson) ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars a missing ingredient
This is a delightful story but I'm concerned that kids miss the point that an overdose of sugar is the problem. Kids do think in concrete terms. If all sugar is bad, why do my parents let me have any sugar? Do my parents want me to do things that are bad for me? Again, the answer is the balance not that all sugar is bad. Fruits and many other healthy food have natural sugar in them. I am a diabetic and I'm very aware of the problems of too much sugar. If an appropriate discussion follows the book, I think it is a good book and I agree with other reviewers. Using this book is like using sugar: do it carefully.

4-0 out of 5 stars Divertido!
I read this story to a second grade bilingual class who just loved the story and were able to understand the message of the story. When I read it to a sixth grade bilingual class using puppets, It was just as enjoyable tothe older children.Since it is in Spanish and English, the whole classwas able to enjoy the story and learn what temptation can do to them.Irecommend this book to anyone teaching a bilingual class or learning eitherlanguage.

4-0 out of 5 stars Supa-creepy
I first read this book years back at the library with two children I was babysitting for the summer. We read it and laughed in bemused horror.

The book chronicles the tale of two children lured to a magical wagonowned by a Mr. Sugar. His friendly countenance and gentle words urge themto try one of his confections, and thus begins the downward spiral intoserious sugar addiction.

They become severely obese, jump up on theschool roof, run backwards, and fall asleep in class. What have we toblame? That cursed sugar.

A surprise twist in the end pulls no punches, and teaches children with heavy-handed propaganda that sugar is bad.Verybad.

At once amusing and freaky-deaky, I've recommended this to peoplelearning Spanish (for its bilingual aspect) and people interested in theweird and unusual.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantasitic and philisophical literary work.
Mr. Sugar came to town is the fantastic, yet somewhat terrifying story of two children; manipulated by the powers of temptation. Seemingly idiotic, this book explores psychological concepts that are usually incomprehecableto young readers. Furthermore, this is a bilingual book, therefore, children who's native tounge is English, have the opperatunity to learn alimited, yet useful Spanish vocabulary. This works in the opposite way aswell.I recommend this book to all people, who speak either English,Spanish, or both. It is a wonderful tale for people of all ages. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Illustrator's Mom rates this book
This book came to my attention because my daughter, Barbara, did the illustrations. I have both a 16 year old and a 7 year old Granddaughter , we asked the older one to read the book and comment and she liked it VERY much. Thought it was very informative without talking down to the young person. The 7 year old will get a chance to read it soon.Of course we've passed the book around the family and Barbara's siblings and their spouses agreed that the illustrations were terrific and they liked the text very much. While I was reading it I took it to all my appointments and many people asked me about the book and took down the name so they could order it for their daughter, niece, granddaughter. They were all impressed with the writing as well as the pictures!

1-0 out of 5 stars Ages 9-12---NEVER
I was really shocked when I started browsing this book before I gave it to my 11 yr old. This is absolutely NOT appropriate for the age group that it is listed for. I think this is possibly ok for a 16 yr old.
Whatever you do, read it yourself before you give it to your daughter-or else you will be in for a ton of questions-that you may not have bargained for.

1-0 out of 5 stars Recommended ages 8-12? yeah, right!
Of course the book contained the usual about periods, anatomy and bras, birth control & STD's. Then it goes into "could I be gay?" Details of orgasam and masturbation (in my opinion encouraging it), The real shocker was when the book gets into talking about foreplay and even has a section discussing anal sex! Is this book for real? I purchased this book for my 9 year old and thank God I flipped through it first! My friend wouldnt even give it to her 15 yr old! I wouldnt consider this book unless your child is over age 16! I was embarrassed that I bought it!

1-0 out of 5 stars More than a pre-teen needs to know...
This book started off great - talking about menstruation and birds and bees but got way too detailed for a pre-teen (discussed homosexuality, different types of sex, etc.) If you're looking for an introduction to the topic, this isn't it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff!
I bought "Girl Stuff" for my twelve year old niece and she loved it! The book is full of helpful information that all girls want and need to know. It is written with pre-teens in mind but doesn't speak down to them. The smart, whimsical illustrations really create a lighthearted tone to the most awkward teen subjects. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars an okay book
This was probably one of the more boring books of Judy Blume. Not really a bad book. I just liked other Blume books better. ...P>This book was very sad and depressing, but it would be a good read for someone with scoliosis. People should keep in mind that this book was written in another decade, so back braces may have looked different back then and the issue was treated a little differently perhaps. To the reviewer who referred to Deenie as having a "deformity"--what? Did Deenie suddenly grow three new legs? Come on!

It was sad how mean the mother was. I can't stand it when parents try to tell their kids what they think they should be when they grow up. It wasn't fair to Deenie to try to make her go into modeling. If you are a huge Judy Blume fan, complete your collection with this book, but don't expect it to be up to par with all the other ones. This one is quite different. I thought it was sort of a strange book when I first read it, but it was worth it, though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strawberry Review
Deenie is a 14 year old girl that attends Adam Junior High School. She's down to earth and she's friendly at that. The problem Deenie has is that she has Scolosis and she has to wear a brace. Wearing the brace holds her back from doing what she wants to do. It also holds her back from wearing what she wants to wear. Will Deenie just give up on everything or will she pull through?

This book makes you want to keep reading non-stop. Thats why i continued reading this book. Just imagine your mom forcing you to do something you really don't care about. Well guess what that's how Deenie's mom is. Her name is Thelma and to me I think she's a witch. You will too if you read this book. It's like all Thelma cares about is Deenie becoming a model. Deenie won't be able to become a model until 4 years go by because that's how long she has to wear the brace. I felt bad for Deenie because it's like her mom doesn't care for Deenie all she care's about is the modeling thing. This book can happen in real life. I'm just lucky i don't have a mom that forces me to do things I don't want to do except finish school and go to college.

5-0 out of 5 stars Judy Blume is the best!
I love Judy Blumes books because I can always relate to them.My friend Lilly has to were a brace.Shes always moody now and it gets annyoning at times. When I read this book I sorta understood why Lilly gets moody and angry.I recommened it for her and now we have something to talk about and she dosn't feel like a totally loser wearing it.She still gets moody but now I can talk to her and more get the evil eye.

4-0 out of 5 stars Growing up isn't easy...
...and for 13 year-old Deenie Fenner, it seems as if life couldn't get any worse. When she sees the brace for the first time, her brain churns with thoughts. "I won't wear it. Never!" she says to herself adamantly. Deenie can't imagine wearing the brace, let alone living normally in it. Even more distraught over the situation is Mrs. Fenner, Deenie's mother, who had high hopes for her daughter's career as a model.

For as long as Deenie can remember, she has been the beauty of the family. Her mother considers Deenie's good looks to be a precious gift that will help her to get far in life. Helen, Deenie's older sister, is known as being the smartest of the two. I get the impression Mrs. Fenner is a bit shallow. She pays less attention to Helen than she does Deenie, all because Deenie is endowed in the looks department. Mrs. Fenner drags her daughter to countless modeling agencies, searching for work. She lives vicariously through her daughter. "You're going to work somewhere where they pay you, not where you pay them," she says.

Mrs. Fenner is really no help with Deenie's scoliosis, a.k.a. curvature of the spine. Fortunately, Deenie has two wonderful friends. At first, when Deenie finds out about her back problems, she's sure doctors will need to operate. When she gives her friends the news, they go out to the nearest department store and buy her a cute pink nightgown to wear at the hospital.

Deenie's scoliosis doesn't require surgery - just a brace for four years or more. Deenie sees she'll have to change the way she eats. She cannot lean over to eat soup or take a bite out of a sandwich, as she soon finds out. She can't wear the same clothes - she needs to move up a size so they fit over her brace. "Damn you crooked spine!" she shrieks before whacking off her beautiful hair with a pair of scissors.

As I'm sure you can imagine, Mrs. Fenner is not pleased.

Still, those who truly care for Deenie for more than just selfish reasons do stick by her. Her best friends stay by her side and don't act any differently towards her. Buddy Brader, an eighth grader, still doesn't hide his interest in Deenie, despite the brace and wacky new hairdo.

Blume has written yet another realistic novel with likeable, believable characters that many readers can relate to. Nothing in Blume's books ever seem contrived or fake. Things happen as they would in honest-to-God true life and the endings are never sugar-coated, sappy, or overly happy - just straight up real. And that, I do believe, is why America's youth has enjoyed her writing for decades.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's been working for me!!!!
This book has really helped me lose weight and be confident. I have lost 10 in about the first month ( 5 of it was those bounds that always go up and down). Now I'm not going to lie, this is not the easiest thing I have done, so far it has taken me longer than 20min everyday and I've beed doing this a little more than a month. I also dont follow the diet. I am eating healthier but i eat what i want sometimes. I suggest to try this book because it has worked for me. just to let you know i am an 14 year old and i was 165 and im down to 155 and still losing after a bit over a month!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for all teens!
This book is what teens need: a simple, effective, and non-time consuming workout. It alternates upper and lower body to let muscles revive from the previous day's workout, and includes AWESOME diet tips, detailed exercise info, reasons why you should exercise and myths explained.

If you're having trouble getting through this workout, start easy and build up. For the first week, I did it without weights to learn the movements. And if it's taking any longer than 30 minutes for you, it's probably because you're just beginning and you're taking the time to flip pages, rest a little longer, and make sure you're doing each exercise correctly. Once you have it down, the upper body part (at least) should take only 20 minutes. The lower's harder for me, so it takes longer.

This book is inspirational and it works! I'm in my second week and I can tell a difference already! Plus it's easy and cheap to do at home, requiring minimal space and a few inexpensive dumbbells. Try it, you'll see!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Work-out!
I bought the "Toning for Teens" book back in February. I started working out on Feburary 15th, using the exercises in the book. It is now May 14th, and I have gone down 2 sizes, and still am getting smaller! Everyone is noticing the difference! This book is amazing!

5-0 out of 5 stars This WORKS!!
I got this book after it was reccomended by a friend who said it did wonders for her. I'm not that much overweight, but definatly not toned, and had some extra 'baggage'. ;-) I've only been going three weeks, and I love it!!! I've already noticed a difference!! I didn't think there actually were any programs out there that could do this! It does take longer the first few days, but after a week it shouldn't take more than about half an hour, or a little longer for the lower body exercizes if you're *really* out of shape and can't take the crunches and stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stop worryig about your body TODAY!!!!
I bought this book hoping that it would help me out, so I wouldn't be so self-concious. Well, all I can say is... MONEY WELL SPENT!!!! I LOVE this book, it has truly helped me, and I'm not even through the amount of time the book says it takes to get your ideal body, and I'm already getting compliments! The best part about it is that it only really takes about 30 minutes, and yes, the first few times you go a little more slowly. But I workout while watching my favorite show, so I don't have to give up any time that I would have spent in front of the tv anyway! In all truth, buy this book if you are really worried about your body in any way, it really helps! ... Read more
