5-0 out of 5 stars Let's go to the dentist!
this is the BEST dentist book i have yet to get for my son! He loves it,and I do too!

The 'real' pictures are an added bonus and everything is done just right!

You won't be dissapointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for any Barney fan!
Even though the age for this book is from 4-8, my 2 year old loves it. She asks to read, "Barney Dentist" all of the time, even though she has about 15 other Barney books. I hope it will help her to not be afraid of the dentist when it comes her time to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant!
There has been a noted shortage of great allegorical novels in recent years; "Barney Goes To The Dentist" plays a great role in redressing the balance. Ms Dowdy's simple tale of a purple dinosaur's trip to the dentist serves as an excellent background for a narration of the change of political paradigms in Europe after the Spanish victory over the Turks at Lepanto in 1571. The novel draws heavily from G. K. Chesterton's narrative poem, but Ms Dowdy is able to bring a great deal that is all her own. I found particularly notable and ironic the manner in which she addressed the reaction of Antwerp anabaptists after the battle and King Philip's response. I would say that Ms Dowdy perhaps gives less credit than do traditional sources to Don Juan of Austria's role in subsequent Hapsburg military affairs, but this approach is interesting, even if you disagree with it. In short, an interesting and enlightening approach to an valuable topic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Barney Goes to the Dentist
This is a great book for your child to get to see the inside of the Dentist Office and not be afraid because Barney is there. Great tool for the teachers or Dental Professional to use to talk with small children for Childrens Dental Health Month. (Febuary)

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for a child's first visit to the dentist.
We high recommend this book for our young patients before their first visit to the dentist. Barney helps remove any fears a child may have regarding their first dental visit. This book contains many good pictures to help explain what will happen during the visit. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Learning Book for Preschoolers
I purchased this book to start to teach my 3 year old about calling 9-1-1. The phone actually works. When you dial 911 correctly, it sounds the alarm and says good job. If you dial incorrectly, it makes a beeping noise. The book does not detail the emergencies, but teaches the basics of giving your name and some circumstances of why you may have to call 911. My daughter likes playing with the phone and practicing dialing 911. Hopefully, she will never have to use it but it is good to be prepared. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for kids
I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and was trying to find an easy way to explain what was going on to my 2 and 5 year old sons. This book was a great help. It explained the entire process in easy to understand language and opened the doors for great discussions from my 5 year old. I would highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A gentle story for the youngest children.
This is the book I want for my best friend, a young mother with breast cancer. Kohlenberg wrote the book for her 18-month- old son, and the book is appropriate as a bedtime story for toddler/pre-school ages, or as an early reader for elementary ages. It clearly and hopefully takes Mommy, Daddy, and Sammy through Mommy's cancer diagnosis, chemotherapy including hair loss, surgery, and finally a day when Mommy's doctors declare her free from cancer, for now. As useful as the text, are the glossary explaining at a child's level terms such as cancer, cells, and radiation, and the names and addresses of several cancer foundations for more information. In a lovely personal introduction for the adult, Kohlberg includes tips for sharing the news with a teacher, and simple activities a child can use to show Mommy love and share special moments with her before, during, and after her treatment. Other books and a couple of videos are referenced for further reading. I love the straight-forward and hopeful style of Sammy but it would be appropriate to choose another book if a child needed specific preparation to deal with loss of a loved one, or if cancer treatment was declined. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Can't Go Wrong With Little Critter"
We are huge fans of Little Critter, so I knew we couldn't go wrong with The New Potty. The story contains typical elements found in many potty books: introduction to the new potty, playing with the new potty, accidents, transition to underpants, and eventual success. What sets all Mayer books apart? The critters talk and act like real life children. And the illustrations are a hoot! Such as the look of terror on Little's Sisters face when greeted with the pink "Critter Potty." Or Little Critter hollering for Mom when his sister misses the potty and almost wets his foot. And that pet mouse...

We have read almost every potty book available on the market as of 9/2003 (over two dozen!). Most fit into two categories: INSTRUCTIONAL books that introduce the skills needed to master the potty; and those that are primarily ENTERTAINING, for children who understand what is supposed to happen on the potty, but need extra time to make it happen. This book contains a little instruction and a lot of entertainment. Try it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Worried That Your Child Will Never Use the Toilett?
We bought this book as well as several other books, when we noticed our child wasn't buying into our advice about how convenient it is for him as well as his parents that he use the toilett, we resorted to this method and it seemed to work all by itself with little influence from the adults. We simply sat down and read it to him and voila.. it worked. I have no idea which book hat the most influence but this was one of them.

3-0 out of 5 stars i think i memorized it ?
This book is short and sweet. My girl still loves it many years after she trained. It is cute and kinda is more for girls. Is there one like it for boy's from Mercer Mayer? The sand box accident is her favorite or was it the accident when brother helped? I liked it when mom was doing laundry and she asked brother to take sister to the potty? The look on his face !

5-0 out of 5 stars The New Potty
What a great learning tool! My daughter loves this book. She is successfully potty trained! Yeepee! This book describes everything, even the time when purchasing the potty chair. It even describes "accidents", which let her know that they will happen and that it is OK. I love the way the entire family helps with the potty training. This will be very helpful when my younger child starts potty training! Great book! Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars The New Potty a Kid Favorite
My son loves this book! We actually now have two - one for home and one when he travels to the sitter or grandparents' house, etc. The picures are colorful and attract your immediately. The story is simple and gets the whole family involved in the potty training process. It is very positive and easy to understand so little ones can follow the meaning. I (and my son) highly recommend it. My son feels it is a 'must read' when going to the potty. ... Read more

How could someone like Mick die? He was the kid who freaked out his

dance in front of the whole school--and the kid who, if only he had worn his

bicycle helmet, would still be alive today. But now Phoebe Harte's

twelve-year-old brother is gone, and Phoebe's world has turned upside down.

With her trademark candor and compassion, beloved middle-grade writer Barbara

Park tells how Phoebe copes with her painful loss in this story filled with

sadness, humor--and hope. Chosen by Publishers Weekly as one of their

5-0 out of 5 stars Nataly's Summary about Mick Harte Was Here
This book is called Mick Harte Was Here. This was a good story. It was about a 12-year-old named Mick. He got in a bike accident because he never wore his helmet. He was a really cool and weird kid. All his family and friends were sad because Mick died. Phoebe (his sister) was at soccer practice when Mick's accident happened. His family was suffering from Mick's death. Zoe, Phoebe's friend, was talking about her problems. After that Phoebe and her mom started talking to each other. The family started talking and eating together at the dinner table. They started living like they used to but a little bit weird.

I like this story because it reminds me that my brother and sister are kind of crazy and silly. They really get mad because I'm their older sister. My brother and sister did not die, but they drive me crazy. Anyways, I thought this story was really funny, sad, and kind of stupid. I thought it was kind of stupid because there are some things like on Halloween he dressed like Thomas Crapper, the man who invented the toilet. Another year he even dressed like Henry VIII and another year he dressed like Clarence Birdseye, the father of the frozen food industry. The other stupid stuff that he did was getting an autograph from a man dressed like a bird.

Well, find out the rest. Read it. It's a really good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I laughed, I cried...
This is one of the most outstanding books dealing with the death of a child (and the family he left behind) that I have ever read! Right from the start, we are told that Mick will die because the narrator (his sister) doesn't want to use his death as a tear-jerker. After that, the book ranges from horrifying to sad to hilarious. (I always laugh out loud when the story of the monkey in the driveway is told -- read it and see if you don't crack up!) Park captures the pain of losing a sibling perfectly without being cloying or portraying the dead child as perfect. The family is REAL: they speak like real people, fight, laugh, cry, love, hurt, and heal like humans... this isn't a paper family

5-0 out of 5 stars Nataly's essay about MICK HARTE WAS HERE
This book is MICK HARTE WAS HERE. I want to tell everyone this book is sad and funny. What I like most about Mick is that he dressed as Thomas Crapper for trick-or-treating. Some people don't know about Thomas Crapper. He is the man who invented the toilet. I like the name of the dog Wocket because Mick couldn't pronounce his r's when he was three. The dog's name was supposed to be Rocket.
The sad part is that Mick dies. Mick died from a bicycle crash because he didn't wear his helmet. Mick's family was like zombies. They wouldn't even eat in the dinner table because they saw the empty chair and they missed Mick. The dad didn't even iron his pants, and his mom didn't even change clothes. She didn't talk to her daughter, either.
At the end of the book Phoebe went to the soccer field to sit there, when she saw a stick. Phoebe thought was a perfect size and small enough to carve the letters into the concrete so they could stay forever. She wrote the letters big enough to see them: MICK HARTE WAS HERE. That was the saddest thing I ever heard, and I want to tell everyone you should wear your helmet, if not, every day there will be deaths. This is a great book for everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mick Harte Was Here by Victor
Barbara Park is one cool author! She wrote other books, but I haven't read them. I have read one, and that's Mick Harte Was Here. It's very good because there was a boy named Mick Harte. He was funny because he was going to his name his dog Rocket, but he couldn't pronounce his R's so he said, "Wocket" instead. After Phoebe's soccer practice, she told her little brother to ride his bike home, but Mick really didn't have a choice. Mick rode his bike, didn't see the rock in front of him, hit the rock, flipped over, and then hit his head. After a while Phoebe heard sirens coming towards her direction. Phoebe saw Mick's bike where he had fallen. Then Phoebe heard the dad say in a sad voice, "He's gone". Phoebe and the dad held hands and walked home acting like if they don't know each other.

The parents blamed Phoebe for this mistake. Phoebe tried to apologize for what she had done. The parents didn't listen to her so Phoebe went looking through Mick's room trying to remember him. Actually, one big accident can cause everyone in the family to act weird; everything was going wrong, and they wouldn't eat together until the end. All they would do was stay away from each other, but they all came back together and everything was back to normal in the end, well, kind of.

But anyway, I wonder why Barbara Park wrote this story. I think because she had a nephew or someone who died in a bike accident without a bike helmet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anais's essay about Mick Harte was Here
This book is called Mick Harte Was Here. I really liked this book because I learned that a helmet is very important. If you don't use a helmet when you are riding a bike, then you probably could get a head injury. This book is mostly about a boy who dies of a head injury because he was riding his bike without a helmet. That is what caused the head injury. You could really learn about this book if you read it.
Mick was going really fast on his bike and then hit a passing truck. The cause of hitting the passing truck was that Mick's wheel hit a rock, and Mick flipped over.

This book reminds me of my brother and me because we always get into arguments. He doesn't want to put his helmet on. That is what happened in the story. Phoebe and Mick always got into arguments because they both always wanted the tattoos that came in the cereal boxes. Just like my brother and I, Phoebe never argued with Mick so he could put his helmet on.

I recommend everybody to read this book. It is a really good book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE book to have whenever your child asks you about pregnanc
This is a great and fun book to explain pregnancy to a child. We love to read it over and over and over. I bought it when I got pregnant of my second child, and we would follow the progress, month by month. M y older child could see that I was going through the same things as the lady in the book (Nausea in the beginning, a burst of energy later, feeling heavy...)

4-0 out of 5 stars my kids loved it BUT
My 2 year old son & 3 year old neice love this book. The only problem I have is with the line "For about 9 months we became chummy while you developed inside of my tummy". I'd rather use the word uterus or womb to descibe where babies grow. Children refer to their stomach as their tummy & I don't want my son to be confused & think babies develop in their mothers stomach.

Beside that line it was a cute story. Each page starts like "Before you were born and with 9 months to go..." and gives a little fact about what's going on each month.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, if you are mainstream...
... but if you are planning an out of hospital birth or a birth with midwives, it's not quite as peachy. There is an illustration of mom at the doctor's office getting checked out early on, a reference in the text to her seeing the doc when baby drops, and then she rushes off to the hospital to push and push in the final pages. No room for birth center or homebirth, the midwifery model of care or self-care.

There is also a full-page illustration of father dusting off a crib.

I also had a hard time identifying with the mother in the illustrations, who is very white upper-middle class in her dresses, make-up and workout clothing.

Parenting, lifestyle, and birth choices aside, this is definitely a book written by a mother, not a writer, and sometimes the rhymes are a bit forced. The illustrations make up for it in their jolly attitude, but are not caldecott contenders- they are quick and dirty cartoon style pen and ink, colorwash type things, with little art.

However, if you see an OB regularly, have a seperate nursery for baby, and like Martha Stewart, this book might be right on target for you!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for toddlers
Our 2 1/2 year old loves it. It's the only good book we've found that demonstrates what's going on during the pregnancy, as opposed to when the child is already old enough to play with the sibling.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best book for preparing toddlers
I ordered this book, along with several others, to help prepare my 2-year old daughter for the arrival of her new baby sister. While the illustrations are charming and the text is cute, this book is much better suited for the older child, of the amusement of adults. It simply does not hold my toddler's attention. ... ... 3-0 out of 5 stars a pretty good book for little kids
My son was 2 1/2 when he was diagnosed with diabetes. This book helped us explain what was wrong to him. I do think the book is a little outdated. With the new insulin's and now the pump, there is little reason to tell a child he cannot have a certain food. When he was diagnosed he was on regular and NPH and the dietician worked with us so that the disease would effect his life as little as possible. She really showed us how to work foods into his diet.

He has always liked this book. If you have a small child (5 or 6 or younger) this book will help you explain what is happening to them.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not up to date on type 1 diabetes treatement for kids 2003
I still read the book to my daughter who is 6 now - dx'd at age 3, but I change the wording to fit our treatment plan. The character states in the book that she "never eats sweets or candy" not even for birthdays or halloween. This is an out of date statement. Kids with diabetes do eat sweets and candies in moderation - just as all children should.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful book for children to learn from
I enjoyed reading this book to my brother who wanted to know about children having diabetes. He has a friend who has diabetes and wanted to know some facts about diabetes. It helped him be aware that children can be treated and that they have to be careful on what they eat. My brother now invites his friend over and has special food just for him.
I even learned about diabetes from reading this book. I did not know that children could be diagnose with diabetes. I am glad that there are treatments to help the children or adults stay healthy and live a normal life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
This book is the main thing that kept my friend's child sane during her diagnosis. She wanted it read at least four times each day that she was in the hospital. When she got home, she shared it with every child that came to visit. It helped everyone find a place to talk about the situation and provided comfort for little Hannah in knowing that other kids were doing okay with Diabetes. Thanks to you for writing this book for children.

1-0 out of 5 stars Obsolete, inaccurate, insensitive, insulting
As a mother of a child (age 7.5) who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes this summer, I looked up any book that might help present his condition to his friends and classmates this fall at school.
This one came with good rating, I bought it, and returned.
Not only that it is obsolete (quote "... I don't ever eat candy or ice cream or cake ...", recommendation from the early 20th century), it is insensitive (quote "... My sister thought diabetes meant I would die..."), and it is insulting that it was not updated since 1994 with a more medically accurate and more cheerfull attitude (quote "...my mom cries because she worries...").

If you need a book on the subject, pick a more accurate, medically sane, and straight-forward (like "My own Type 1 Diabetes Book" by Sandra J. Hollenberg)...If you think that kids with type 1 should never, ever eat candy, find another doctor. But please, don't buy this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Will Petey Survive?
This book Petey by Ben Mikaelsen truly captures how just one person can make such a huge difference in somebody's life. In this book a baby in 1920 gets miss-diagnosed as an idiot and got placed in a mental institution. Throughout Petey's life he meets tons of people, many of them care for Petey and he cared for them too. But, when Petey gets older he has to get transferred to an old age home. There he meets a teenage boy who learns to care for Petey . This book makes you want to reach out and help someone, it makes you strive to be a better friend. Find out how all of Petey's relationships grow and at the end of the book you also will care for Petey. Every one should read this book. It keeps you wanting to read more; you practically can't put this book down. You want to know what happens to Petey in his lifetime, and you also want to know if his illness gets better or worse. Ben Mikaelsen wrote this book extremely descriptive; it feels like you are in the story. You are in touch with the character's feelings. The topic of this story is cerebral palsy. It is a topic that you normally would not read about, but this book is not only appealing you actually learn about the sickness, cerebral palsy. I know some people disagree with me and they don't like this book, because they think it is slow. This book may start out slow in the beginning for some people, but as it continues it gets better and better. This book would not be appropriate for younger children, because it has some words that are hard to understand, and also some concepts that may not yet have been introduced to younger children. Dealing with an illness is also hard for young children to understand. However, you can really learn about topics that are new to you by reading about them in a book like this, and thereby learn to be more understanding of people's problems. This is a touching book, and even after you finish reading it you will keep thinking about it and want to read it over and over again. This is not a book that just gets thrown on a bookshelf and forgotten.

4-0 out of 5 stars petey
Petey book is the best I've ever read. It's about a boy that lives in a mental institution but he is not mental he just has cerebral palsy (A dysfunction in the brain that doesn't allow you to walk) the pain and hurt that Petey has gone through and knowing that he gets a friend makes it that much better. This book really sounds believable it seems like it can happen in real life. I love this book but I don't like the way he starts it he just rambles on about nothing about the real story so their for I give it 4 **** (stars) and I lost some interest and it made me want to stop reading. But... once he gets the (real) story going it got me hooked again and I was done before I no it. And it was due the next day so... but yes, I like this book and would recommend it for any one one that has at least 5 min to start the story then you (warning) WILL BE HOOKED!!!

By the way I just saved a whole bunch of money on my car insurance!

5-0 out of 5 stars Petey, A touching story
Petey is one of the most touching, saddest story I have ever read. This story is about a man named Petey who is born with a serious disease were he can do nothing, but think and lie in his bed. He makes many friends who learn to communicate and stick up for him until his last seconds in this wonderful world. This book will bring tears and a new respect for people who are different and for your own life.

5-0 out of 5 stars I liked this book.
It's 1920 in Bozeman Alabama, and the Corbin family has just been blessed with a baby boy named Petey in a hospital. However, he looks completely different from other ordinary babies. Because of this, the doctors misdiagnose him as an idiot and think he's severely feebleminded. But Petey has a severe case of cerebral palsy, a condition that's caused by brain damage and results in poor control and weakness of the muscles before, during, or briefly after birth. Two years later, the family sends him to the Insane Asylum in Warm Springs Montana because they can't care for him anymore. That's when his new life begins.

When he gets to the Insane Asylum, he gets put in the Infant's Ward. That's when his life looks like it's going to take a turn for the worst. The room is crowded, he isn't cared for properly by the nurses, and he's lonely because he has no friends. But then he starts to become really good friends with Esteban, a worker at the hospital. But that friendship doesn't last long because Esteban has to leave the hospital. When Petey is eleven years old he gets moved to the Men's Ward.

While living in the Men's Ward, Petey makes friends with the mice and a nine-year-old boy named Calvin, who's mildly retarded and has severe club feet. They start to talk and do everything together. Petey also makes friends with Joe, Cassie, and Owen, three of the workers at the hospital. Unfortunately, they all had to leave the hospital too. After living at the hospital for a long time, Calvin and Petey get transferred to different nursing homes.

Meanwhile, in another part of the story, Trevor Lodd has just moved to Bozeman Montana because his parents want to get better jobs, and he doesn't think it's fair at all. It doesn't get any better when he's walking home from school one day, and sees three neighborhood bullies throwing snowballs at Petey who now lives at the Bozeman Nursing Home. After Trevor chases them off, he starts to become really good friends with Petey. He's determined to make Petey's life better by getting him a new wheelchair because the one he uses is old and is falling apart, and by finding Petey's old friend Calvin. Will he be able to find Calvin? Will he get him a new wheelchair? Will they still be friends?

I liked this book because it reminded me that even though I have cerebral palsy myself and can't do some of the things that normal people can do, I can still make a lot of friends, have a happy, normal, and productive life, and do a lot of other things by myself. How would you have felt if you were Petey or one of his friends? If you like to read books about amazing people who have disabilities, then read Petey and find out what happens to Petey and his friends!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Touching Story of Petey's Life
After beginning the astonishing novel "Petey," Written by Ben Mikaelsen It is 280 pages. I couldn't put the book down. This book takes place in 1922. Petey has cerebral Palsy. Petey was misdiagnosed for being an idiot. At the age of two, his parents Sara and Roy Corbin had to give him up because they could no longer support Petey, Billy and Cathy at the same time. So they decided to give Petey up to Warm Springs Insane Asylum.

"Petey" is about a man that spends all of his life growing up in a mental institution and in a nursing home. Doctor misdiagnosed him at birth as being an idiot, but has Cerebral Palsy. When Petey was moved to the men's ward he meets his best friend Calvin Anderson. Calvin and Petey did everything together. They watched movies; play outside even though they were in wheelchairs. They even play with fake gun given to them by Owens. Calvin taught Petey how to talk. After that Petey called Calvin "Ieeekk." After Calvin moved to a different nursing home, Petey moved to a different nursing home. Petey meet a woman named Sally.

Petey loved to go sit out on the lawn and enjoy the weather. One day some school bullies named Kenny, Bud, and String. They hid behind a pine tree and started to throw some snowballs at Petey. On the way home Trevor Ladd noticed the bullies throwing the snowballs at Petey. So therefore Trevor protected him and yelled for help. Then Sally came out and said "Get away form Petey" because she thought he was attacking him. When Sally asked Petey if he was the one hurting him, In Petey language he said "oooo, oooo." (Meant no) So after that Sally what'd Trevor to come back to visit him. Trevor comes back even though he did not want to.

After all of this Petey befriends Trevor. And they become best friends. Trevor takes Petey on walks, Petey wheelchair becomes very old and it is falling apart on the walks. Trevor gets the idea of getting a wheelchair for Petey. So he makes a few calls to some people and he finds out how much a wheelchair costs. So he contacts the newspaper and sees if they could make an article about Petey. And at the same time Trevor was trying to find Petey old friend Calvin. He talk to Owens (One if the people that took care of Petey and Calvin) about Calvin and Trevor make some more phone calls to see if he could locate Calvin Anderson. Trevor eventually finds out were Calvin was located. A little while after this Trevor gets enough money for the wheelchair. Calvin was located only a few hundred miles away. After he found out were Calvin was he arranged for Calvin to come and see Petey. But when Calvin got there and the day was though they found out that there was no place for Calvin to stay. So Trevor says that he could stay at his house. When they got to his house his parents said "he not staying with us" But of course Trevor didn't listen to what his parents said.

After Calvin, went back to his nursing home. Petey became ill and was not getting better. He had a fever, the chills. So Trevor gave Sally his number and said "if he gets any worse call me" So one night he gets a call from Sally say that he should get down to the nursing home as soon as possible. Trevor rides his bike down there as fast as he could. His parents see that he was leaving and so they followed him to the nursing home. They see how much Trevor loves him. But before Petey dies Trevor asked Petey if he would be his grandfather since he had no grandpa. Of course, Petey said yes. Then Petey dies.

Personally I loved this book because it had a different view of life. It was set to Petey's point of view. Most of everything was just happy because Petey was always happy even though everything bad was happening to him. That was a powerful thing to me because I can think negative things when bad things are happening to me but it taught me to always think passive! That is what I think what the author what'd me to learn for the book and that we should no jug a person of there look because Petey was truly deformed.

Overall this book is a very emotionally journey of what Petey had to go though in his life. And all the things that he went though and the friends he had lost. So he was very happy that Trevor decides to come back and became friends. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Pig Latin
Okay, Okay, Okay...hold on a minute:

1) Pigs are cloven, and yes perhaps if they applied enough pressure to the toilet handle perhaps they could flush, but come on seriously? Flushing with a hoof?

2) Pigs are short, hence, they could never reach the toilet handle without help. It would take at least two smart pigs, one balencing the other to flush. Not likely, friends.

3) "What if the pig jumped?" Whatever. I've heard this argument so many times, I'm sick and tired of the "Verticalist Theory". The highest jumping pig's vertical ever recorded was six inches. That leaves about two and a half feet to cover to flush. Insipid.

4) Pigs go outside. Okay, a few eccentric pig-owners have been known to keep their pigs indoors but a vast majority of pig-life is spent outdoors. Ever heard of a trough? A sty? Pig-iron? Wake up Farmer Browns of the world!

5) Finally, pigs are free.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book I've Never Heard of
My sister is trying to potty train my two year old nephew. I was visiting one night and he had me read "once upon a potty." i thought it was okay. i asked my sister if she had bought "everyone poops" yet and she had never heard of it. i was a bit surprised, as it had a sort of cult following when i was in high school. so i got on ole amazon to order "everyone poops." i decided to follow their recommendations and also pick up "does a pig flush?". it has become one of THE books my nephew wants people to read. the illustrations are good and the text is engaging. it gets a bit didactic toward the end, but my nephew doesn't seem to mind. i think his favorite part is answering the questions at the beginning concerning "who" flushes. i think it might be one of the better potty books. ... We have been using this book with Sonlight Curriculum this year. My children range in age from 6 to 12 years old. The book at times is too difficult for the 6 year old and too easy for the 12 year old, but in general it has been very useful. The chapters are short and difficult concepts are clearly explained. My children are alwys excited to get to the activity section of each chapter, but are disappointed about half the time. The 'activities' usually always work, but they are not always very fun or interesting. ... Read more

Have you ever had to deal with a stranger who made you feel uncomfortable or been threatened by a bully in the schoolyard? Did you know that there are things you can do now that will help you be better prepared the next time around?

Most people think self-defense means fighting, but the best defense has nothing to do with hitting, kicking, or punching. In this book, written by two prominent personal safety instructors, you will discover how to protect yourself by being aware of your surroundings and by using your body language to let people know you're not an easy target. There are ways to avoid being a victim of violence. This powerful handbook provides nonviolent solutions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Teaches the prevention aspect of bullying
This excellent book could either be used as a vehicle for parent-child discussion, or as a part of a school curriculum. It would be good for older elementary school and for middle school students. It covers a wide variety of safety and personal boundary issues. In this regard, it is superior to many books on personal safety. It presents stories of children and adolescents who are each faced with a dilemma which might put them in a dangerous or uncomfortable situation. It then discusses the options and the possible outcomes.

I like the fact that it starts by teaching kids how to avoid being bullied in the first place.

Book Description

This is a warm, fun-filled fantasy story for children with a difference: the hero is Ben, a boy with Asperger Syndrome. When Ben and his friend Andy find an old bottle in the school yard, they little realize the surprises about to be unleashed in their lives. Bound up with this exciting mystery is the story of how Ben is diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome and how he and his family deal with the problems and joys that come along. Blue Bottle Mystery is a delight to read that is more than just another kid's book. For the first time, the issues and frustrations that a child may have with Asperger Syndrome are explored within a fictional format especially for children. Its portrayal of Ben as the central character offers other children with autistic spectrum disorders and their peers a positive role model. It is a valuable teaching tool that demystifies children with Asperger Syndrome, justifying their individuality as valid and interesting. In Blue Bottle Mystery Kathy Hoopmann has combined her love of children with her passion for fantasy literature to produce a delightful read for anyone who loves an adventure and wants a unique insight into the mind of an Asperger child. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book was the ice breaker for disclosing diagnosis of AS
It's been over a year since my son and I read this book together, but I am still so happy that I discovered it. I was never quite sure when or how to talk to my son about his diagnosis, but knew that the time was getting close(he was 10 yrs old). After reading this book, which had enough literal and amusing examples that my AS son enjoyed and we both laughed about, my son's only comment was, "I think I'm alot like that kid in the book, except I have friends." I smiled and closed the book. Over the next few days, my son kept referring to the boy in the book, and then point blank one day asked me if he too had Asperger's Syndrome. It was for us a really unexpected and nice way to teach him more about himself and actually using the AS term (as we'd done alot of teaching without using AS in previous years).
I'm here now to buy the sequel! I would recommend this book to children, parents, teachers, and professionals. Each child is different, so I'd recommend that parents read it first and try to imagine how their child would like it (and not just how they felt when reading it).

3-0 out of 5 stars Blue Bottle Mystery:An Asperger's Adventure
We were disappointed, my husband and I both read the book but do not think it would be a good book for our 11 year old (recently diagnosised) with Aspergers Syndrome. It might be a good book to read if you don't have Aspergers and want to understand how an "Aspie" thinks and feels. We don't want him to think he did something wrong because his life doesn't turnout "peachy keen" like the character "Ben's" does. Perhaps we're too protective but it was way too much fantasy and we didn't want our son to end up disappointed. I would recommend the book for introducing Asperger's to classmates of an Aspie.

5-0 out of 5 stars It really rocks!
It really was a good book about an Asperger's adventure and a boy with AS. I'm a 9 yo boy who just got diagnosised with AS, and it was fun to read about a boy with Aspergers.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Can we get the sequel, Mom?"
We finished this book tonight, and my 8-year-old son with Asperger's immediately asked me if we could get the sequel. You bet!

Wish the publisher would do a U.S. version, since some of the Aussie slang is a little hard for an American kid to understand. And my son would've liked a more thorough solution to the "mystery". But all-in-all, a very nice book.

5-0 out of 5 stars WISHES REALLY DO COME TRUE SOMETIMES
Ben, a boy with an undiagnosed condition of Asperger's Syndrome endures yet another frustrating school day of teacher complaints and failure to turn in his work turns to his friend Andy. Shunned by most children because of his propensity for non sequitors and his heightened sensory modes (e.g. strong aversion for loud noises and certain smells and tastes), Ben launches on what becomes a wonderous adventure. Other boys join in Ben and Andy's digging quest and when they unearth a mysterious blue bottle, each imagines the bottle is inhabited by a genie. Each boy makes a wish individual to his needs and let's just say the results will make you smile.

Ben is a delightful character and his description of the ongoing challenges he has with Asperger's Syndrome is a welcome voice for many. Asperger's Syndrome (AS) is a neurological condition that is on the same spectrum as autism. Ben's undefined differences that impede social development were due to AS; Ben gives excellent descriptions of AS and the challenges and yet, the bonuses it has to offer.

This is a must read for everyone. Hats off to this book! ... Read more

Lauri Keller, the much-applauded creator of the wacky, wonderful The Scrambled States of America, traces one school day in a classroom of teeth in Open Wide: Tooth School Inside. Fortunately, when Dr. Flossman takes attendance, all 32 teeth are present to take the pledge: "And to the gums on which we stand, strong and healthy, with toothbrushes and toothpaste for all." The day proceeds with an anatomy lesson (illustrating dentin, enamel, pulp, etc.), which is interrupted only momentarily when Carl Canine badmouths a little molar (hurting his feelings even though he has a hard enamel shell on the outside). Sally Incisor then shares her report on primary teeth ("Babies don't even need teeth. You never see them eating corn on the cob or anything"), and the Tooth Fairy makes a guest appearance, offering molar-coaster rides and bemoaning the whole "under-the-pillow" idea, which causes her to fear suffocation.

Lunch is a messy affair--complete with food fights--and when it is over, none of the teeth feel like brushing. Of course, an in-depth lesson on tooth decay and cavities ignites a flurry of flossing, gargling, and brushing. As in Scrambled States (which is a must-see if you haven't yet read it), every clever, colorful collage bubbles with activity, hilarious asides between the teeth, and tiny details that you may miss the first time through. Two quizzes conclude the book, posing questions such as "George Washington had teeth made out of rocks and twigs. T or F" and "Tooth decay is caused by a) bacteriaand germs, b) slugs and worms, c) bad perms." Kids will never ignore their teeth again--and when they do take a look in the mirror they may see a smiling tooth face peering back, begging for a good brush. (Ages 5 to 9) -- Karin Snelson ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun for adults, also
I am an adult, but I'm a big fan of Laurie Keller's two books. "Open Wide" is an hilarious, creative book about teeth which I thoroughly enjoyed even though, the day before, I had myself been through a painful dentist appointment. I knwo a couple of young children who read and loved Laurie's first book, "The Scrambled States of America" and I would imagine children will get a huge kick out of this one also. Her depiction of an elementary school environment, even though it's one filled with students who are teeth, is very accurate and observant and her illustrations are wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific !
Laurie Keller has a real winner here. Silly, funny, with humorfor everyone in the family and a lesson and message about teeth yourkids will never forget. There's even a fun quiz at the end that kids will love. The colorful, clever illustrations compliment the text and add to the joy of this book. You'll be reading this story over and over again. There's so much going on in Open Wide Tooth School Inside, your kids will never tire of it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, But It's No "Scrambled States"
My 4-year-old and I have really enjoyed Keller's book, "The Scrambled States of America". I ordered this title in hopes of getting a similar home run.

The artwork is great, and Keller's highly non-linear style is still a big hit with my son. For me, though, the storyline doesn't quite gel. Very little is happening in "Open Wide: Tooth School Inside". Instead, we get a recitation of facts about teeth, with large doses of humor thrown in.

Don't get me wrong, Nebraska. It's still a good book, just not up to the greatness that was "The Scrambled States of America".

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!
My Kids and I all enjoy this book many times! My son was the first one I read it to (5yrs old) and after that first reading, he could correctly answer all the questions at the end. I'm bringing it to show our dentist. The best kids book (I learned some things, too) about teeth that we've read!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's our Bedtime Story Book
I am a school nurse that teaches oral hygiene. I use this book constantly for every grade level, even in my pregnant minor program.
