It's never too early to start kids reading. Even in infancy, young eyes can begin to make connections between images on a page and the real thing.White on Black is an ideal first book, and one that will continue to fascinate the very youngest readers as they grow. Exquisitely simple, solid white pictures of everyday objects--a banana, a duck, a bottle--against a black background provide high contrast for developing eyes. This wordless picture book encourages caregivers to engage the child as they "read" together: "Oh look, a boat, that looks like your bath toy, doesn't it?"

With White on Black's companion book, Black on White, Tana Hoban has created a striking pair of visual tools to increase the youngest readers' burgeoning powers of perception. In this complex world, it's a joy to find a book that sees the world in the simplest of terms. (Baby to Preschool) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book to give as a baby present
This is one of the few books that I ALWAYS send as a baby present. It's fantastic---the black and white illustrations are great for a newborn and many of my friends have continued to "read" the book with their child even when he or she became a toddler.

Try her other book---which has black images on a white background as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Psychologist mom's ONLY shower gift
Before my first-born could speak or even SIT, all the adults around him could tell which page he liked most--true communication from an infant that didn't involve crying (or other intense and directed body language)! We were amazed that we all had noticed. The books got LOTS of attention from our wee one. Face it, there is just not a lot you CAN "read" to an infant those first six months of life. He loved them. I'm here buying my fifth or sixth set of these two books for yet another mom-to-be. They are so much more memorable than green and yellow clothing, for both parents and babes.

4-0 out of 5 stars white on black
This book is wonderful for topic focused conversation with your infant. Sometimes it is hard to find things to talk about with an infant. This books helps to solve that problem so that we can expose our babies to the conversational language they need to learn how to speak.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect gift for a newborn
These simple, familiar silhouettes held my baby's interest from the time he was a few weeks old until about his first birthday. For a while I propped the book open on his changing table, and it kept his attention occupied during diaper changes. I wish hospitals would send a copy home with every newborn, to help all infants get the early mental stimulation they need.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great first book for a baby.
We "read" this book to our son when he was a few weeks old, not because he understood the pictures, but because he could track the black and white pictures. Reading is extremely important to any child and we wanted to start early. So, eventhough our 4 week old had no idea what the words meant, he would nestle as we described the pictures to him and turned the pages. How else does a child learn to love reading? When our son was approximately one year old he could begin to describe some of the pictures and he would sit on the floor and "read" this book himself. An excellent, excellent first book for your baby or for a gift. ... Read more

Tana Hoban has created an elegant solution for those who want to initiate children into the infinite wonders of reading. This picture book compels parents to talk to their babies as they share the wordless pages with their little ones. Black illustrations on a white background provide high contrast for infants' underdeveloped eyes. Soothingly familiar, silhouetted shapes--a leaf, a key ring, a bib, an elephant--will be recognized by the very young, and through these simple pictures, aspiring readers will begin to identify the link between the objects they see and the words their caregivers say. Hoban, beloved author of many childhood favorites, including Black on White's companion piece, White on Black, as well as Is It Red? Is It Yellow? Is It Blue? and What Is It?, has struck gold again--black gold, that is. It's the perfect baby gift! (Baby to Preschool) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for newborns
Who says babies are too young for books? This book (and Ms. Hoban's other similar books)is a shining example that we're never too young to be introduced to books and reading. The bright, crisp, contrasting images are perfect for new babies. My baby loves this book, and will sit entranced for quite a while as we talk about the images we see. My only complaint would be that it is too short! (Of course, so are babies' attention spans) I think this book is a great baby shower or 'new baby' present. Their first book, what could be a better gift?

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to stimulate your newborn!!!
This book is great! No words, just contrasting black and white pictures. My newborn loved it. He couldn't really concentrate on anything visually, as most newborns are that way, but the minute he saw this book, he just stared and stared at it. I recommend it to all new mothers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Still one of baby's favorites
Baby's had this book since birth... and after 4 months, it is still one of her favorites. The pictures really grab her attention, and she likes to study them. Also since there are no words, you can make up a new story for the pictures each time if you want!

5-0 out of 5 stars HIS FAVORITE!
Granted, my son is only four months old, but this book is a big hit. I'm sure he'll outgrow it eventually, but that's the case with any book! If you have a very little one, this is a great book to start with. My son has only a dozen or so books so far, and out of all of them, this is the one he kicks and coos at the most. I'm attending a baby shower in a couple months and I'm definitely going to throw in a copy of "Black on White" for her.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for infants
Babies generally like two kinds of books: ones with photos of other babies and animals, and ones with solid black on white illustrations. I experienced my own frustrations in trying to get my infant daughter interested in books with bright colorful illustrations, and she just didn't perceive them as something worth looking at. But then I remembered what I had been told years before in a children's bookstore, and when I switched to the two categories above, she got very excited. This is a sweet little collection of black animal shapes on white backgrounds, with no text at all. It's a good book for a few months, but as soon as your child gets past this stage, it quickly will get put in storage (until the next one comes along, or for the next baby shower gift). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Our household's all-time-favorite toddler book
We have six children, and this is/was the hands-down favorite of all our children as toddlers. We received it as a gift when our 13 yo was a baby, and now our toddler twins are enjoying it. I believe our children learned their color names from this book. They also like Hoban's "Black on White." I wouldn't hesitate to buy this for any under 2's you might have.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as Popular the Black/White Books at Our House
As my son grew older and more interested in colors, I looked for a book that would delight him as much as "Black on White" (also by Tana Hoban) had when he was an infant. I thought this book would fill that description, but it didn't quite fit the bill. It has great photographs, but no text.

Despite the catchy, rhyming title, each page shows only a picture of the item: No rhyming text is involved. Although my son likes the brightly colored pictures, he is more interested when I read books with rhythmic texts, such as "Blue Hat, Green Hat" by Sandra Boynton.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great baby or toddler book
My daughter really enjoys this book. It is simple and gives toddlers a chance to learn their colors. We've read it so many times my daughter who is two can now read it herself!

5-0 out of 5 stars A winner!!!
This book is a favorite at our house! The durable book has one large, colorful photograph of a common item on each page. The item's name and color are printed at the bottom (yellow shoe, red clock, black cat, etc.). It's easy for little hands to turn the pages as well as focus on each page. So many children's books these days seem to have TOO much information on each page. This book finds a way to attract the reader in a simple way with its beautiful photographs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interactive shape book kids love.
I read this book to a class of two and three year olds. They love to find the circles and squares. It lets them "read" the book themselves. The quality photography is a pleasure for all ages. There is no text, which makes the book more interactive because you talk about the pictures with the children instead. This lets them be more active participants.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book for introducing reading to children!
Reading practice does not begin in kindergarten or first grade. Reading environmental print is a child's first exposure to letters, words, and pictures coming together to explain a concept and Hoban does it brilliantly.

Her photographs allow children to decipher the world around them via 30 photographs of everyday signs.

I applaud Hoban for creating wonderful books for children to be introduced to the concept of reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for toddlers
We got this book for my first child when she was about a year and a half old, and it became an instant favorite. She loved being read the signs in this book over and over.

Astonishingly, she read her first word at about two years old thanks to this book; when we were on a trip in a different state, in a restaurant she'd never seen, she pointed to a sign on the wall and read out "Exit only!" She was reading us "Exit" signs everywhere for months after that, though it was of course a long time before she started reading other words or being able to read phonetically.

Now she's a teenager headed for college, I have a second child about a year and a half old, and I'm buying this book for him...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent pre-reader
I found this book was an excellent pre-reading excercise for my preschooler. She just loves to see and recognize the signs as we are driving. This also makes it a great book to bring along for car trips of any length. I am buying a copy for her friend who loves all things car & truck. I know this will make a great gift for boys as well as girls ages 3+. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Construction Zone Obsession
Construction Zone is the first "truck book" that I purchased for my son. I bought it for him when he was about 15 months. It is by far his favorite book. I need to purchase another one because the pages have been taped so many times. The only problem that I would have with the book is the quality of paper. It's not really sturdy for the age group that reads it. But I also should consider the HEAVY use that our copy receives. The photographs in it are perfect and it names each piece of equipment. It's a very basic book that shows all the basic construction equipment along with a garbage truck. I think it is a fine purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars That's right. All the colors of the rainbow.
Any book of color photographs runs a very great risk of being dated. Color photographs fade so easily, and styles change so quickly that this book could easily be shunted into the realm of forgotten children's literature. But take a look at it, even once, and your perceptions will change instantly. This book is about color. And its photographs fairly throb with life and vitality, the like of which you'll have great difficulty finding in any kids books published today.

The book begins with a key. Red, yellow, blue, orange, green, and purple are arranged next to corresponding circles of the same color. As you flip through the book, these circles appear at the bottom of the page, indicating what colors can be found in each individual picture. As the kids go through the book, they can flip back to the key at the front to determine what the name of each color is. As they use this book, they will learn their colors, and eventually be able to use the text without constant flipping backwards and forwards.

And the photographs? As an artist who has shown her works in the MOMA, Toban's photos are best described on the back of the book as, "an artistic statement as well as an introduction to reality". The shots are of city scenes, brimming with color and action. The children caught in these pictures are multi-ethnic, playing and running and posing. Regardless of where a child lives, this book will inspire any kid who has ever wanted a look at a beautiful multi-colored America. You could do worse than to buy this book for your kids. And you could certainly do no better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow - pictures of the city...
and they're luscious! This is the book that first awakened my daughter (at 19 months old) to speaking about color. But regardless of color concepts, I would have wanted to share these photographs, which make me love things like a broken umbrella in a trash can. It's art for toddlers: She was absorbed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for visual learners
I've used this book in my early childhood art classes. The children love to find the items in the photographs that match the colored circles on the bottom of each page. With few words and many visual surprises, this book, as with so many of this author's works, helps us to become more visually aware of our surroundings. I highly recommend Tana Hoban's concept books to parents, early childhood educators, and all who delight in re-discovering the familiar. Her photography skills, powers of observation, and visual wit help us to see the world anew!

2-0 out of 5 stars Has color but not many pages
I would not highly recommend this book, has colors but not enough pages, not worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Show children the world they know...
There is no better way to teach children than with concepts they can grasp. Hoban's photographs allow the concreteness of money and letters to be real and not just a picture on a page in a book.

I have my classroom stocked with multiple copies of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Fun Book
This book has excellent examples of both upper and lower case letters in bright, fun colors that really got my three year old interested in learning them. The use of coins to teach counting is great and as the photos are actual size, I'm certain in the future I will be using real coins as a companion to the book. This is a really attractive book that would make a great gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars 26 Letters and 99 cents
Tana Hoban is an author of many children's books. She has used photography as her way of illustrating her books. One half of this book is the teaching of the alphabet in very colorful pages and the other half of the book (which you need to turn over and upside down) is the teaching of coins and money. It is very colorful and eyecatching. The book is definitely a great teaching tool.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is a good book for young readers
This is a good book for beginning readers. It links the letters of the alphabet with colorful and engaging photographs. It also shows the connection between counting and the way that our coin system works (nickels, dimes etc.) The only difficulty for young readers would be when they get half way through the book and find that the rest of the book is upside down. This might be confusing for a young reader trying to read the book by themselves. This is a book that is best shared by a young reader and a more experienced reader. ... Read more
