Book Description

Naturalist Hope Ryden's stunning photographs accompany clear, conversational essays telling of her observations and experiences as she tracked the mustangs of the West. Wild horses evolved and roamed in North America until becoming extinct ten thousand years ago. Not until the early sixteenth century, when the conquistadors brought tough mounts to carry them as they explore what is now Mexico and the Southwest, did the horse reappear on American soil. Hope Ryden describes how the Plains Indians adopted the horse, which transformed their culture. But many of their horses escaped into the wild and reverted to primitive behaviors-such as forming tight-knit social groups with complicated social hierarchies-that enabled them to thrive and survive. Horse lovers and history buffs, as well as all who relish a good true-life adventure, will be fascinated and moved by this compelling portrait of a national treasure. Bibliography. ... Read more

Hope Ryden has done an excellent job on her book. Beautiful pictures of horses are every where in this book. Hope has followed several herds of wild mustangs and observed their behavor. I am amazed at her knowledge of these horses and she has shared it with us in her book. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Powerful Book
I loved this book!! I loved it because it made you think, and it probably has some of the greatest quotes in the "Saddle Club"/"Pine Hollow" seies. I loved it because it continued from "The Long Ride" (another great book, especially putting the accident at the beginning of the book). I know a lot of the characters have not appeared, but that's because when we are older, new people enter our lives. Also, they've grown up. The issues ARE grown up. What I love about the "Saddle Club" and "Pine Hollow" series is that they are not like other books for young adults. I mean, think about: How would you feel if you were Stevie? The entire time I read this book, I was thinking that. I also loved the part when Emily explained about being handicapped. It's all in your head. And it is true that "Absence can be powerful". This book also had the feeling of the beloved "Saddle Club" book #30, "Autumn Trail" (and they both have trail in the title). But the feelings are different because the characters are older. Keep up the good work, Ms. Bryant!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This was an awesome book!!
I loved the book!! It was great! I love that Carole is working at Pine Hollow. I also like Lisa and Alex are togather but what about John Brightstar? Ms. Bryant, thanks for writting all your books! They are all awesome! I can't wait for the next Pine Hollow and Saddle Club.

3-0 out of 5 stars i do like the series
Although I have not read the book yet but I did flip through it and i was diappionted. There were parts with Lisa besides a phone call and a letter.I thought that they would encluded Lisa in it but they didnt.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good!
I thought this was a good book! It might be a little young for me, but I still enjoyed it as something to do. It you are horsey and need something to do, get this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good but sad book
I liked this book but it dragged on a TINY bit. It was really sad about Fez...in fact I almost cryed while I read the sad part...I don't want to give it away. Anyway, I like how Bonnie Bryant told about Stevie being depressed like that, it seemed so real, probably other teens have went through that before. Any way, Carole was really nosie in this book. But I guess she was just curious to find out about Ben...anyway, I was a little surprised that Max said the D-word in this book. (I don't really care.) But it was a pretty good book. Sad, too. And I liked it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars will anna keep acorn
this was the first pony pal book I read I really liked it.Anna has bad grades in school. her parents say if she don't get them up she will have to give Acorn up.will acorn have to move to another home.you need to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't think you can only do one thing in life.
Anna was not doing well in School so her parents said if your grades don't improve you will lose your pony Acorn. Anna, Pam, and Lulu made a plan. I like this book because it teaches you you can't just do one thing in life. I recommend this book to people who like sad stories that turn out good.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is a good book! anna's mom and dad say if her grades don't go up she can't keep acorn! will acorn stay or go? me and my pony like this book a lot!

1-0 out of 5 stars what a poor excuse for a book
i hate this book! Anna is sooo mean! shedoesn't know what Acorn likes. If I were her,I would just let Acorn do what he liked. He is not stupid. there would be no harm. And whats all this pony junk? I mean, come on! Ponies and horses are the same thing! And why do you measure them in hands? Everyone's hand is a different size! This book is really weird. Read it if you like, but the only part i really thought was cool was when the pony pals leaped their horses. I mean, horses aren't natural leapers like wolves and deer. It must have been tough!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
The Pony Pals books are a little unrealistic;you can tell by the illustrations that Pam,Anna, and Lulu are getting a little big for their ponies, and Acorn Is Really big for a Shetland pony. But aside from that,I really liked this book. I think it was great that Anna got to keep Acorn. I would be so upset if someone took away my pony! Plus,Acorn is lively and sweet,so I think he and Anna are a perfect match! Acorn reminds me of my pony Lucky. They are both kind, courageous, feisty, and have a mind of their own! I hope you enjoy this great book! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cloud
I read and enjoyed the book it seems to portray the behavior of the wild stallion and his herd very well. Good readablity factor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cloud is a beautiful real life story of amazing wild horses
This is a delightful, moving and insightful book for kids and adults of ALL ages. The print is big enough and the reading level easy enough for young children of reading age but the never before seen photography and insightful understanding shared by the author will thrill adults as well.

No one has ever observed and recorded the real life of any of America's precious, bold, highly intelligent and majestic Wild Horses as Kathren's does in this book. Their evolved social order and sometimes difficult but natural lives are fascinating to get a close look at. I would expect most people to keep this where guests to their home or offices would see it for years to come. This book makes a great gift for many occaisions. The only way this view can be enhanced is to go see the wild horses for oneself. If interested to ride to see the wild ones, contact the American Horse Defense Fund ... and see about taking the ride of your life to see other wild horses.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read book for all ages!
Ginger Kathrens book Cloud: Wild Stallion of the Rockies captures the spirit of our love affair with wild horses and the trials of this long relationship. They have epitomized the American spirit and image yet suffered terribly from our ignorance and disregard all the while maintaining their magnificence. Kathrens book, through vivid images and heartfelt writings, allows the reader both young and old, from east or west to those who have never seen a horse in person or someone that has had the bliss to feel their aura, to all experience the wild horse. This is certainly a book for all ages.

Rarely do we get to enjoy the uniqueness of an animal such as we do with Cloud. People tend to write and think about animals as though they don't have lives of their own, but that is a serious and devastating human shortcoming. As the bumper sticker says, "Humans are not the only species on the planet, we just act like it." Yet from when we first see Cloud as a wobbly-kneed young foal, struggling to keep up, but persevering, we know he is a special and unique soul. This does not waiver all the way to when he is a strong young stallion facing the challenges of nature and man. We can only hope that Kathrens book (and accompanying documentary) will help us again recapture our respect for these magnificent animals before it is too late. Because if wild horses like Cloud disappear, so does the American spirit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful true story about the life of a wild stallion
I couldn't put the book down. The many pictures are beautiful and the story reads like fiction, but is the true story of a wild horse. The writer, who is a film maker, follows Cloud for 5 years beginning on the day he was born. She records the intimate and poignant moments about him and his family and the other wild horses in his Montana wilderness home. As a kid who grew up reading "The Black Stallion" books, I was completely captivated by the true life adventures of this remarkable horse. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Can the Black win against Flame?
I was glued to the book the minute I picked it up. I was amazed at how well Walter Farley was able to place the story and help the readers understand what Alec feels when he is challened to race by Steve Duncan. You know what is going on all the time.

I got the book for Christmas and I finished it before school started up again. Every aspect of it is good. If you just want to curl up with a good book, this is the one.

I hope to be just as good a writer as Walter Farley. As far as horse books go, you can't get any better than him!

4-0 out of 5 stars In My Opinion the Best Black Stallion Book
Firstly, before reading this I recommend you first get familiar with "The Black Stallion" by reading a few of his books. Also reading "The Island Stallion" would greatly help. This book is about the closely matched competition between The Black Stallion (The Black) and The Island Stallion (Flame). It starts out as a letter to Alec Ramsey asking for help from Steve Duncun, but it turns out to be so much more. As the competition builds between the horses it also starts to build between the owners as well. This book will bring an exciting combination of shock and suspence.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Exciting and Thrilling Story!
I thought this book was captivating and it really pulled me in. When an unknown Island Stallion named Flame comes to the track and starts breaking records some believe that the Black has finally met his match! Can the Black win against this mysterious Island Stallion? You'll have to read The Black Stallion Challenged to find out!

5-0 out of 5 stars the black stallion challenged
I already knew that the black would win........He is a awesome horse! I have all but two of these books! I hope to get the rest of them!

1-0 out of 5 stars Farley's second chance at the Match of the Century fizzles.
Once again Farley matches the Black against Flame this time in a race instead of a fight. However the Black always has to win because if he didn't, what's the appeal of a racehorse that wins most of the time? In the real world, we've got plenty of those. Because of that it is easy to guess the ending from the first page. It's not a horrible book that I think you should avoid at all costs but it is certainly only for hardcore Black Stallion series or horse fans. Another bone to pick: Henry Daily keeps getting older and older but never retires or gets sick or dies. He has got to be at least 80 by the time of this book and yet he never misses a step. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another great Blaze book
My 7 yo son loves the Billy and Blaze series. This series is an excellent one for boys. Even if you don't think they have an interest in horses.

There is great adventure, like only a boy could imagine. And the stories are not so inane that the parents reading them cry for mercy. ;-)

I recommend it and my son highly recommends it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blaze and the Forrest Fire
I like Billy and Blaze books and I like what happened in that book Blaze and the Forrest fire and it said in the book that Billy's dog Rex goes with them on rides and one day he's sick. Billy and Blaze is about a boy and his pony who race to the forest fire to set and speeed the alarm. But one day he was sick? It reminds me of Paul Brandt's CD Calm Before The Storm.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, extraordinary book!
C.W. Anderson has outdone himself with this Billy and Blaze story. I love most of his Blaze series with its timeless feel and innocence; what life used to be about. Blaze and Billy are put in a situation of defending the entire forest. They must make their way over hill and dale to alert the neighbouring farm. Will they make it... well I wont spoil it for you. 4-0 out of 5 stars The last of the classic Campbell Thoroughbred books
Cindy's Glory is the last book in the Thoroughbred series that Joanna Campbell wrote herself. As of spring 2003, the series has grown to 57 titles, 4 super editions, three reissues, and a spin-off Ashleigh series, which makes the original 14 books and 2 super editions even more precious. Most loyal readers agree that Joanna Campbell, as the original author and creater, was the best. She created real situations with flawed but likable characters. Even Cindy's Glory, however, slips a little on the scale.

Cindy's Glory is the story of Cindy Blake, an orphan who is staying temporarily at Whitebrook Farm with Ian and Beth MacLean, and their daughter Samantha. In the previous book, Cindy's Runaway Colt, Cindy found a stray colt named Glory and hid him while she tried to convince the MacLeans to save him from his abusive owners - who, it turned out, had stolen him. Now he is up for auction, so Cindy and her friend Heather Gilbert determine to train him as a racehorse to prove he's good enough for Whitebrook to buy.

Campbell is notorious for having her heroines - Ashleigh, the original character who started the series, and then Samantha - go off slightly half-cocked when it comes to horses. You really have to ignore the fact that two twelve-year-old girls are galloping a racehorse; if you do you'll be able to handle the whole book. Don't get hung up on the fact that it's totally unreasonable; this is one example of the way Campbell was definitely on the way out when she wrote this book.

Otherwise Campbell does a good job. Cindy's fear at being taken away from her foster home at Whitebrook is very real, as is her gratitude at being part of a loving family. And her relationship with Glory is much like Ashleigh's with her beloved mare Wonder, but not a carbon copy. Longtime readers will manage to find parallels and enjoy the bond between them, but it won't feel like Campbell ran out of things to say and just cut-and-pasted Ashleigh and Wonder stories.

Joanna Campbell wrote Thoroughbred books #1-14, the super editiongs Ashleigh's Christmas Miracle and Ashleigh's Diary, and the first three books of the Ashleigh series: Lightning's Last Hope, A Horse for Christmas, and Waiting for Stardust. She also wrote Battlecry Forever! and Star of Shadowbrook Farm, which were released as part of the "Ashleigh's Book Collection" series. If you plan to read Thoroughbred I recommend you start with #1 and go up, because the original 14 books really were the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
Okay, I'll admit it, I read the end 50 gazillion times! This is such a good book! Cindy works so hard at getting Glory ready, and your not sure even though there's lot's of books with 'Glory' in the title ahead of this book. The auction is good, Mike was smart, that's all I can other than READ THIS BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars this book is the best so far
This book is a bomb. It was sad when they had to take Glory away.

4-0 out of 5 stars just should not have happened
i can't believe that cindy isn't going to stay at whitebrook and glory either. or do they? read the book find the answers. i love horses liek cindy and ashleigh do. maybe i will be just like them- someday.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book was terrible!
This book was awful! I mean come on! I'm 16 and I love TBs! I have one of my own and it took me 1 year just to get him to canter under control! No way she could ride for 6 months and be galloping him under control! And come on! Why does every one of Cindy's horses turn out to be a champion?! it does not happen like that! I can't believe Mike actually bought Glory! Glory bothers me. He's doesn't act like a typical TB! Mine was raced and he is still hyper even after we gelded him and got him off the track! I hate to think of what he was like as a stud on the track! ... Read more

Magical ponies create the first snowfall of winter

On a cold, gray day, Old Man Winter leads his snow ponies outside. "Are you ready?" he asks. Yes! Faster and faster the ponies gallop. Everything they touch turns white with snow as they bring winter to the forest and field.

At last the ponies tire, and Old Man Winter settles them down for the night in their cozy barn. Outside, the world is covered with a soft white blanket. Winter has come at last.

Simple, poetic text and evocative illustrations capture the magic of winter's first snowfall.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is delightful.
This book is a delight to the eye, the ear, the imagination, and feelings. Wow! I already summed it up. The pictures are captivating. The poetic text is fun to read and to hear. The imaginary part, the poetic nature, and feelings remind me of 10,000 White Horses by Betsy B. Lee where a child pretends that the foam in the waves contains white horses which she will catch and ride to shore. I think I enjoy both of these books as much as the children do. Like my title of my review says: it is delightful.

Snow Ponies worked wonderfully with all age levels. The youngest were mesmerized by the life-like illustrations done by Jason Cockcroft. The older children at the end of the reading gallloped, danced and nickered, imitating the ponies' play.

Cynthia Cotten's magical message of 'Old Man Winter' left all captivated and spellbound. We all viewed snow much more positively! Snow Ponies was a delight to present to an audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read Aloud
Shared (in groups of thirty) with five hundred students 4th -6th grade. Beautiful illustrations capture the magical frolicing of Snow Ponies released by Old Man Winter. The rhythm of a winter storm is felt in this simple tale. Adults smile. Children love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated and written!
Snow Ponies is a perfect addition to your child's library. The story is excellent, with a hint of magic that actually makes the reader feel as if they are running with the Snow Ponies! The illustrations are awe-inspiring and complement the story beautifully. Buy this book! You'll love it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Billy and Blaze
First a comment about the review on above: That review from Publisher's Weekly has nothing to do with this book. I don't know what book it has to do with.

Billy and Blaze books are a wonderful series about a boy and his horse and the adventures they find while out riding. I think any child could appreciate these gentle stories. They are a nice break from the commercialized books usually marketed to boys that are based on cartoons and toys and movies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blaze Finds the Trail, Excitement at every page
This is a great book for young readers, especially those who love horses. This is a refreshing story about a boy named Billy and his pony named Blaze. The two have a very special bond and care very much for each other. One day they go for an outing and events happen which put them in danger. Readers are kept in suspense as Blaze and Billy struggle to get home. I would recommend this book to all young readers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best...
I just finished this book and I really loved it. Brad and his little wife mad me, shall we say really mad. Why can't they just leave Ashleigh and Pride alone. And when Charlie died I cried. Other than Ashleigh he is my favorite character. I really loved the way Ashleigh spread Charlie's ashes. I also really like the way Campbell had a mixture of steeplechases, racing, and some jumping. She really knows how to write a good book. A must read for Thoroughbred fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give us more STARS!
I don't think 5 stars is enough for this book. It needs at least eight. I loved it. I HATE Brad and Lavinia. What a bunch of jerks! Pooor Pride, he tries so hard, and all they do is pick on him. They could have killed him in #7. Brad & L. need to move to Australia or something. Sorry all you folks from Australia. This book was great. Next to Samantha's Journey it is one of the best. I HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE Brad and Lavinia. And why did Charley have to die? He's the only other person, besides maybe Jilly and Linda, that believed in Wonder. I cry every time I read this book. I LOVE IT... I LOVE HORSES!!! HORSES RULE!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the most amazing book i have EVER seen( I like to read Books so imagine how many I have read)! Joanna Cambell is Amazing! I hope they come out with MORE,MORE,MORE!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars again, magnificent!
THIS WAS ANOTHER FANTASTIC ONE!! Again, Sammy has to fight for Pride. Read to see if she can win THIS time ... Read this!!Please keep the series going so when I'm a little older I can write in it(I want to be an author.)!! ...

5-0 out of 5 stars It' awesome!
This is one of my favourites since Ashleigh and Samantha are my favourite characters. But, I ABSOLUTELY HATE BRAD AND LAVINIA! I cried when charlie died. Did you know that if Lavinia hadn't told Charlie to retire gracefully, he wouldn't have had that much stress and have died! Lavinia should be charged with murder! She's a....well I can't say it. But you get my point. Anyways, I laughed when Lavinia wanted to name mr. Wonderful after herself! it was hilarious. and what kind of a name is Lavinia anyway??? sounds like some french garden salad dressing. Anyways. I'm glad Pride kept beating them, it was funny, however i have nothing against Lord Ainsley who's a cutie pie. But as far as Brad goes!!!! I know it's a fictional story but I thought ASHLEIGH was gunna die from high blood pressure. And she's only
22! Anyways, let's fast forward a bit. I agree with most of you when you say that Cindy's a bit of a snob, no more snobbish then Christina. AND WHY ON EARTH DID SHE GIVE UP STERLING? I thought she was the horse of her dreams??? then STAR comes along. HA! i've got nothing against him since he' a sweetie, but what's with the Connection with him? We read each other's minds!? please Christina, your not a horse whisperer. And haven't you noticed how Star ignores you completely when your on the ground? it' just when your in the saddle that he behaves perfectly for. it's probably just cause the others are fatter then you or something, maybe he reacts to fattness, he may have a sensitive back you know. Sheesh! and what' with your hair colour? Blonde or Brown? or red? Sorry to get carried away, just some flaws bug me. Toot-a-loo ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect
A great book! I was impressed that this book begins EXACTLY where 'Pride's Challenge' ends. After Pride's win in the Whitney, and with Ashleigh protesting about Brad's instructions and the way Alvero nearly ruined Pride. The book would have great suspense in the beginning for anyone who doesn't read the back of the book. They shouldn't say, on the back, that Pride wins his race in the Breeders Cup and is named Horse of the Year. The whole first half of the book is about "will Pride win the classic?" "will he make Horse of the Year?" "will he beat Lord Ainsley?" (and show Brad and Lavinia Townsend?!) I also have to warn anybody who would like to be spared "mushy stuff". I mean...Tor gave her "a big, smacking kiss on the lips"? I started reading at the wrond end of the series, with 'Star's Chance', and I noticed that 'Fallen Star' has almost the exact same plot as this book. "At the height of his racing career... he suddenly develops a deadly illness... he may never race again--he may not even live..." But aside from those things I recommend this book to anyone who's willing to cry a little bit.

5-0 out of 5 stars A VERY GOOD BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is an awesome book!! It is very sad and very good at the same time. I cried when Pride almost died. The best part of the book is when he got named Horse of the Year and beat Brad's and Lavinia's horse, Lord Ainsley, to get it. But after the Breeder's cup and heading into his five-year-ols season, Pride comes down with a deadly disease. Only with Samatha's and Ashleigh's love for Pride did he recover and moved back to Whitebrook from the clinic. That was the ultimate best part in the whole book. It was realy cool how he recovered in the night with Samantha's love and care. Then did Pride noticed that he had to get better to be with the people he loved and he improved in just 12 hours!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW! what suspence!
That was a great book! when samantha woke up in the vet's office I THOUGHT THAT PRIDE WAS DEAD!and I started to cry in 3rd p.then when he was better I cried again with tears of joy!
that was one of the best books I have EVER read!GREAT JOB 2 JOANNA CAMPBELL!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
This book is great! I started reading it and couldn't put it down. This is defiantly one of those books that you can't stop reading. If you love the TB series, then read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
This book was fantastic! I love Pride and Samantha. Pride finishs his wonderful 3 year-old racing career and Ashleigh and Samantha can't wait for his 4 year-old season. But, when Samantha and Tor come back from a dance and go check on Pride he is laying down and wildly thrashing his legs. Read the book to find out what happens. ... Read more
