Book Description Reviews (75)
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes horse books. It's fun to read. I would recommend it to fifth through seventh graders. It's an easy book to read. It's a great book with excitement and it is fun to read.
Alec and The Black are finally rescued and Alec joins forces with an ex trainer named Henry Dailey. They plan to make Black a famous race horse but will the Black Stallion ever be truly tamed? This was a beautifully well written story full of adventure and heart. If you don't try it then you will really be missing out.
A fascinating and fantastical story of sea rescue, perseverance, and courage, as well as a peek into the world of horse racing half a century ago, these stories, despite being written in 1941, have a timeless quality that will always capture the heart of any adventurer.
One of my reasons why I liked this book is, because it always gives me that feeling of whats going to happen next. Its just that the book is so full of excitment. Every time Alec rides the black horse, the author makes it seem that Alec is always risking his life. Every once in a while the author, Walter Farley, would write an event where it seems Alec could loss his life. Such as this, "A few minutes later Henry and Jake ran up to them, and Alec weakly climbed down from the saddle. Henry took the reins- they were sticky and wet with blood." Another reason why I liked this book is, it has just the right level of vocabulary. Sometimes when you choose a book and it turns out to be something a little too easy or a little too hard, that you can't understand what the book is really talking about. Such as this sentence, "The next day Alec set out to obtain more of the carragheen" or this sentence, "he remebered the deep gully that was there. My most favorite part of this book was, when Alec and the black horse gets rescued from the island they were stranded on, and when Alec finally gets to see his family for the first time in many months. The reason why I like this part is, it's full of happiness. Alec had never seen his family in about five months, and he thought that he was going to die on that island with the horse.
With the book first being published in 1941 - I wonder now how much of this story was influenced by the SeaBiscuit story? Anyway - this is one of those books that I remember wishing with all my heart and soul I could be Alec, alone on the island in the sun with that horse. Just riding. And having no other thoughts in the world. And sometimes, after a particularly bad week, this book is one of those that I scoop up to smooth my edges. ... Read more | |

A MUST READ!!
The Heartland series is about Amy Fleming, a teenage girl who is the daughter of a world-famous horse rehabilitator. After a life-changing accident, Amy takes over her her mom's rescue & rehab center for horses, called Heartland. Throughout the series, Amy faces many obstacles, and not just with the horses, but also socially and mentally. This book, Darkest Hour, is (right now) the lastest book in the series. Amy is handling the business in Heartland well until an equine flu illness attacks the horses. One by one, horses get sick and are forced into isolation while the whole Heartland farm is under quarantine. It doesn't help that Ty, Amy's boyfriend and employee of Heartland, is arguing with Ben, the other stablehand. Amy has a lot of stress put on her, but the situation gradually disappears. However, just as things settle down, an incident rip-roars through the short tranquility and, when the dust settles, things might never be the same again. Will Amy physically and mentally cope with everything? I really enjoyed this book. Since I ride horses myself, I could really relate to Amy's dilemmas in behavioral problems with the horses and in rehabilitating them. I also like the description put into the book because it helped me to visualize what was happening. It also had really nice explainations of things, so nothing was confusing to me. Darkest Hour had lots of suspense and emotion, so it was very realistic. I reccomend this book to girls who are interested in horses. I also suggest that you start by reading the first book in the Heartland series, Coming Home.

Book Description Reviews (21)
By Walter Farley Adventure Characters: Alec is Black's owner. He loves horses. He is 14 years old. He has black hair and goes to high school. He loves Black a lot. Black is a black stallion who Alec befriends after a shipwreck. Henry is the short, stout, bowlegged trainer of Black. He also owns the stables Black lives in. Mr. Volence is the owner of Sun Raider, a horse Black beat in racing. He thinks Black can improve the American racehorse. Abu Ja' ben Ishak is Black's real owner. His hair is steel gray. His skin is tough, dry, and the color of mahogany. Raj is about 12 years old. He guides Alec's group through the desert. He has never known his family. Tabari is Abu's daughter. She is about 15 years old. She is very beautiful. She loves her father a lot. The Setting: The book takes place in Henry's stables and Alec's house in the suburbs of New York, and in Arabia. The Plot: Someone tries to kill Black. The next day, a man shows up and claims to be Black's real owner. They find out he is telling the truth and he takes Black to Arabia. Henry, Alec and Mr. Volence follow him to Arabia where they learn about a conflict between Abu's tribe and a neighboring tribe. The conflict is that supposedly Abu killed his best friend, who happened to be the leader of the neighboring tribe. The son of the dead leader is very vengeful. Someone re-steals Black. Abu's and the neighboring tribe are about to go to war because Abu's tribe thinks the other tribe stole Black. Alec and Raj find out the truth and save Black. The man who kidnapped Black gets away, but his men did not. Alec and Raj help make the Tribes friends again and Raj finds his family. They hold a big race like every year. During the race the man who kidnapped Black tries to shot Black. Instead, the others tribe leader shot the man. At the end of the race the other tribe's leader who was riding for his tribe and Alec, who was riding for Abu's tribe, were racing their horses neck and neck. Black and Alec win by a small space. At the end, Tabari marries the chief of the other tribe. The tribes make peace and Abu promises Alec he will get Black's first son. My favorite scene is when Alec meets Tabari because she is very nice and talks to Alec. I also like it when Alec meets Abu's tribe because it is all new for Alec and he behaves very nicely even though he is impatient to see Black. My two favorite characters are Raj and Tabari. I like Raj because he shows independence and he is very nice and wishes he knew his family. He wants to help Alec and be friends with him. I like Tabari because she is nice, beautiful, shows lots of independence and makes her own decisions. I recommend this book to horse or animal lovers. I also recommend it for mystery lovers. I think people should read this because it is full of adventure, mystery, horses, and Alec's thoughts. It is a wonderful book. It makes you feel like you are in the book. I think all my friends should read this. It truly is an excellent book. I would rate this book a 10 because it shows a boy's love for a horse and how he struggles to get his horse back when it is taken from him. I think Walter Farley did a wonderful job writing it. I would also give this book a ten because it keeps you wondering what happens next. Walter Farley keeps you hanging on his every word.

Book Description Billy was a little boy who "loved horses more than anything else in the world." Imagine how happy he was when he got his very own pony for his birthday! From that day on, Billy was seldom seen without his new friend, Blaze. Riding through fields and woods, Billy and Blaze learned to trust and understand one another -- and to jump over fences and fallen trees with ease. They were a great team, but were they good enough to win the gleaming silver cup at the Mason Horse Show? This is the first book in the classic Billy and Blaze series. Sensitive drawings and easy-to-read words capture the warmth and gentle understanding between a boy and his horse. Reviews (5)
The Billy and Blaze series is great fun. Young boys, even those not interested in horses, will love these books. My 7yo has never had an interest in horses (he thinks they smell bad) but he hangs on to every word of these adventurous stories.

In Everything Changes, Amy deals with alot. She has to since Ty's still in a coma and there's an un-backed stallion (Dazzle) straight from the plains of Nevada. Plus dealing with all of the other damaged horses by herself and the barn chores. This was a great book and I hope Lauren Brooke continues on writing.

Imaginative and age appropriate, Lauren Brooke's series supplies great entertainment for any active middle school reader. While they are certainly written directly for a female middle school audience, this late thirty something year old dad, whose literary tastes favor histories and biographies, has found this particular series quite entertaining in a pleasantly guilt free manner. ... At Tys birthday he makes sure Amy's safe when Amy's older sister-Lou- is trying to find the farther who abanded them, and Amy's babysister is going on a vet meeting with Heartlands vet and Lou's boyfriend- Scott (also Matt's older brother)- When the opened Ty's gift they almost kissed! Arm to arm mouth to mouth- They were porbaly going to when the phone rang. It was a nurse at a hosptial. You see Amy's grandpa was sick. The nurse said her grandpa was geting really sick, and so Ty and Amy rush off. If you want to find out the rest about Amy's grandpa and about Ty and Amy how now there going to get along, and about if Amy and Matt will make up and much more get the book!
I don't like to tell what happens, because then it sort of takes away some of the excitement or surprise when you come to a part you already know. The end is like the best part. If you're looking for a good horse book, but one that's really realistic, you should read the Heartland series. Especially this one. This is one of those books that really deserves 5 stars... Anyway, if you haven't read this book already, you'll make a wonderful decision by reading it- NOW! Thank You for taking the time to read this. It's really a wonderful book~ love horses
