3-0 out of 5 stars What's with the grammar?
I've read these books many times to my son who just turned six years old, and we're anxiously awaiting Junie B's experience as a first grader. Junie B. is a somewhat sassy, very entertaining little girl who copes with a variety of problems and issues typical Kindergarteners face each day. These are charming little stories, with cute illustrations, and Junie B. is clearly loved by her parents and has plenty of friends. My son pays close attention to these stories, and whenever my wife and I say, "We'll see" to him, he says, "We'll see is another word for no," which is a common Junie B. saying. But I have one concern, and I've docked a star from the rating because of it: Barbara Park's mode of narrating through Junie B. has her using an abundance of incorrect verb tenses (i.e. "we never had much guests" and "so she just holded my hand.") As a result, since our son is just beginning to learn to read and acquire a basic command of the language, we're constantly having to correct the incorrect word usages he's picked up from these books. It's charming in print, but not nearly as much when your youngster starts picking that stuff up.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Junie B.
I have all these except book 4.

Stupid Smelly Bus: Remember when it was scary to go to school? Cause it was your first day and you didn't know anything. Meet Junie B. Jones, kidnergartner. She's so scared of the school bus, and the meanies on it that when it's time to go home, she doesn't.
A Little Monkey Business: It's pooey on B-A-B-I-E-S until... Junie B. finds out that her new dumb old baby brother is a big fat deal. Her two bestest friends are giving her everything they own just to see him. And guess what else? Maybe she can bring him to school on Pet Day.
Big Fat Mouth: Sometimes life is P.U. Junie B's having a rough week. First she got punishment for shooting off her mouth in kindergarten. And now she's in big trouble again! Cause Monday is Job Day, and Junie B. told her class she's got the bestest job of all. Only what is it?
You also get the book Some Sneaky Peeky Spying.

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING Book Series
Junie B. books have propelled my 6 year old daughter into the wonderful world of reading chapter books on her own. She loves them so much that she can't put them down, and she recently started a Junie B. "library" collection. In her words: "I love Barbara Park (the author). She's SO good at writting the way kids talk and think. Barbara Park and Junie B. rock."

As a parent, I was skeptical at first. About a year ago, a neighbor (who is very heavy-hearted and serious about life) said she didn't like the books because she thought Junie B. had too much of an attitude. She loaned us one (The Stinky Smelly Bus) so that I could see for myself. I was hesitent, but read the book to my daughter. In summary, although Junie B. is far from perfect, she is surrounded by very clever, compassionate adults, she always learns from her mistakes, and she has a big heart. Additionally, the interest in my daughter's eyes and the big belly laughs she let out during the reading convinced me to buy a second book in the series.

I'm now a full force supporter of Junie B., and I enjoy seeing my daughter trade the various books in the series with her friends at school. Junie B. Jones books are their (and my) FAVORITE BY FAR! Thank you Barbara Park for lighting up my daughter's reading world and keeping it fun and interesting!!!

A final note: I do NOT recommend these books for children under six; they may misinterpret the wonderful messages Barbara Park is conveying, and focus only on Junie B.'s "spirited" personality (just as some of the other reviewers here have done!).

5-0 out of 5 stars AN EDUCATION STUDENT FROM INDIANA
I have read the reviews, and then proceeded to read the numerous books about Junie B. Jones. I have had numerous education classes on teaching reading. I fell in love with Junie B. She is 6 years old. How do 6 years old talk?? They use 100% correct grammar?? I am 22 years old, and even I don't se 100% correct grammar; nor if you anaylsis yourself, I'm sure you may realize, HEY me either. Granted when I read the first book of Junie, I was like HOLD up.. was that a mis-print?? But to be honest, take any 6 year old, that is the way they talk. Lots of schools use these books because it is on the child's ability level in reading. Children enjoy reading, children enjoy humor-- this promotes the love for literacy. Barbara Park, provides a read ablility level for many students in schools today. Some who are in the 6th grade level still only read at a 2nd grade level. Some have had bad experiences with reading-- they hate reading. This is absolutely horrible. Children should love to read; in life, reading is required in practically everything-- and its important to bestill upon all children that reading is FUN-- and they can all be successful too, although behind in reading levels. The worst thing as a "soon to be teacher" is to know that there will be children out there that will have no desire to read. Number one, because they can't; number two, because they find no interest in the materials they are being forced to read. Barbara Park is an excellent author; she really makes the children understand how Junie B. feels-- and as far as the grammar, granted it caught me off guard as well the first time, but you can use this book to kill lots of birds with one stone. The book provides an opportunity for students to be successful readers, become fluent in reading, have fun doing so, and it is important as a parent or teacher to talk with your child about reading. When this communication is used, talk about how when writing or talking, we have better ways of expressing ourselves. Make sure to address that Junie B. is 6 years old, and as she gets older much like the child, her grammar will increase to that of the social norm of "correct grammar." But until she reaches that stage of her educational career, I would suggest that we allow students to read these books, they offer material that the child can relate to and be successful at. You might even learn a thing or two from Junie-- so sit back and read the lesson Junie learns in all her books. Because if you fully read, she may do mischievous acts, however a valuable lesson is gained at the end of every book that talks about why she should not have acted the way she did.
With that being said, get to reading, and allow children to grow with Junie B. Jones.

    5-0 out of 5 stars We're Addicted!
As a literary agent who represents children's and young adult books, I am always on the prowl for great stories. And did I ever find them with the Junie B. books. My five-year-old daughter is just beginning to read, and we have spent endless hours enjoying the Junie B. series. As parents, it's our job to use books as a teaching tool. As we're reading the books, I'll stop mid-chapter and ask my daughter what's happening at that particular moment in the story. Her retention and comprehension level is amazing with these stories. And, we talk about why Junie B. may be doing an inappropriate behavior, and we chat about what she would do in situations similar to Junie B. To me, there is nothing better than to discuss a great book with a child and to listen to their opinions and the Junie B. books are the best I've found yet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Popular books for a reason!!
Oh my goodness. Some people take these books far too seriously. The books are meant to be made from a child's point of view. While we may not like children using these words, they are going to hear it from classmates regardless. If these books interest a child and they are actually reading because they like the books, I don't see a problem. Now, as a parent there are lessons to be taught with books that use words such as "hate." Ask them about the books. "Why do you think Junie B. says the word hate and stupid?" "What other words could Junie B. say that would be better?" While asking your child these questions you can really form a bond over these books and teach lessons. They like it because the point of view seems true to life and you'll like it because you have the opportunity to let your child know what to do when they read or hear these words in school. I like Junie B.'s adventures and the kids do too!

5-0 out of 5 stars First Grader, Toothless Wonder
I LOVE Junie B Jones. My daughter LOVES Junie B Jones. She is 6 and took a liking to Junie B. when she was 5 years old. She is reading them to me and enjoying every minute of it. She laughs and giggles and rolls her eyes at some of the things Junie B. will say. And for that some reviews have bashed the grammar but that is what gives the books their charm. All parents know that a 1st grader is not going to speak correctly all the time. It is our duty as a parent to make sure they learn to speak correctly and not get their grammar lesson from a book that is meant to be enjoyed. I enjoy hearing my daughter read these well writtn books to me. She thinks they are wonderful and can't wait to finish one just so she can pick up another one to read.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Junie B.
I have all four of these books and have read them about five times.

Yucky Blucky Fruitcake: Junie B's the bestest winner in the world! It's Carnival Night, and Lucille has already won a box of fluffy cupcakes with sprinkles on them. But when Junie B. wins the Cake Walk, she chooses the bestest cake of all - the one wrapped in sparkly alluminum foil. (The cake she picked was a fruitcake!)
That Meanie Jim's Birthday: Guess who's not invited? That meanie Jim has invited everyone in Room Nine to his birthday party on Saturday - except Junie B.! Should she have her own birthday party six months early and not invite Jim? Or should she move to It's a Small World After All in Disneyland?
Loves Handsome Warren: There's a new boy in kindergarten, and guess what? He's the handsomest guy Junie B. has ever seen! She and Lucille and that Grace all want him for a boyfriend. Only he thinks Junie B. is a nutball. Just cause she couldn't stop laughing and rolling. So how is she supposed to get that boy to love her?
Has a Monster Under Her Bed: There's no such things as monsters. Mother and Daddy even said so. But then why is there monster drool on Junie B's pillow? Oh, no! What if Paulie Allen Puffer is right - what if she really does have a monster under her bed? If Junie B goes to sleep, the monster might see her feet hanging down. And he might think her piggy toes are yummy little wiener sausages!

You get all four books with this set.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cute stories, but they make it hard on parents
I've got nothing against Junie. Her stories are cute and they are our daughter's favorites. But the grammar is so bad, it has had a noticeably negative impact on our daughter's speech. I have to explain over and over that "bestest" and "hided" are not words. No matter how amusing the stories may be, I recommend that parents do not buy these books. There are plenty of fun books out there that don't teach bad grammar habits.

5-0 out of 5 stars Junie B. Jones
I must say after reading some of the negative reviews of these books, you would think that they were written by Hugh Heffner or something. While the written language is not "picture perfect",the books are fun. I have a soon-to-be 8 year old son who, until he began reading Junie B. Jones, had absolutely no interest in reading what-so-ever. Now, he carries the book around and wants to read because he loves it so much. I say, that as long as he is reading(age appropriate material) I am happy. I am attempting to bring up reading lover and this is the beginning of that. Additionally, I do not worry about what he will pick up from these books or anything else because I have instilled values in him that can not be shaken. Children know and understand more than we want to beleive. We need to give them credit for that. While yes, she does have much attitude I am sure there are some Junie B's in ALL of your children's schools. How do you deal with that??? ... Read more

Pippi longstocking was one of the first chapter books I read as I had to read it for a Third grade class. I enjoyed the way she gets herself out of jams and helps show the neighbor kids a whole new way of life that they've never seen before. There is one thing that is stuck in my mind from that book and it is how everything is upside down in her house. I think that this should be every kids first chapter book because it is easy to read and it helps kids open their imagination. It showed me how to use mine and even though I didn't do the stuff Pippi did it still helped me open up my imagination and I hope it still helps kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most engaging books written for boys and girls!
Pippi Longstocking is frequently one of the first chapter books read to children, and as a first grade teacher, I can attest to the value of its choice. Pippi is a larger than life character who does so many things that young children find absolutely wonderful and satisfying. * * * * * * * * * * * Pippi, an *orphan* with braids askew, lives all by herself at Villa Villekulla. Her only companions are her monkey and a horse (who lives on her porch).Children get to know Pippi through Annika and Tommy, *proper* children who live next door. Pippi looks at things as obliquely as her braids; she usually sees the positive side of things, unless she is requested to go to school or learn the multiplication tables. She has her own ideas about things, and simply cannot be made to follow the rules, but her way of disobeying is amusing and quite chathartic for children who ALWAYS have to follow the rules that adults make. She does not inspire kids to break the rules;she just makes them laugh with glee at her absurdity. She has *powers* that they adore!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pip pip and tarry ho!
To my mind, Pippi Longstocking is perhaps the world's first child superhero. Able to lift strong policemen with her bare hands! Capable of climbing tall houses and trees with virtually no effort at all! Rescuing children from burning buildings and adults from snobby talk! If, like myself, you were a child of the 1980s then your first exposure to Miss Longstocking probably came in the form of that gawdawful movie circa 1988. Words alone cannot express the damage that film did to the youth of America. After watching it I avoided the book "Pippi Longstocking" like it was the plague itself. Only recently have I recanted and decided to read Astrid Lindgren's classic tale. As charming as it is outright bizarre I charge all of you to take the time to find and devour this little Swedish gem. Pippi's a pip, no question.

Working at wish fulfillment on about ten different levels, Pippi is the ultimate kid's kid. She lives all alone in a large fantastic house. Her mother died while she was but a babe and her father has been lost at sea. As optimistic regarding her father's return as Primrose Squarp in "Everything On a Waffle", Pippi fills her days with dancing, pancakes, and games. She owns a whole suitcase of gold coins, which allow her the freedom to live alone and untended. On top of that, she has her own monkey (the drolly named Mr. Nilsson) and horse. The neighbor children Annika and Tommy think (rightly so) that Pippi's a wonder. She never attends school or bothers with all the problems other children suffer. Instead, she has her own unique perspective on life and the people around her. Though precocious she's never mean, even when dealing with bullies or criminals.

The book, originally published in American in 1950, is a wonder. Though I'm certain other illustrators have done a fair job, I highly recommend that you seek out an edition illustrated by the talented Louis S. Glanzman. His Pippi is just as fabulous as you might hope her to be. I've always minded those Pippi's that seem a little too lanky or tough. This Pippi is just mischief incarnate. While you're out seeking an edition of this book illustrated by Glanzman, also make certain that the translation has been done by Florence Lamborn. There were some moments of trans-atlantic interpretation that just blew me away. For example, when confronted by evil bullies numerous in number, the biggest and meanest of them eyes Pippi and says, "boys, let Willie alone and take a look at this girl. What a babe!". Obviously that phrase must've meant something entirely different in 1950, but I was incredibly amused by it just the same. Other funny moments caught my eye. For one thing, Pippi and her friends are forever drinking coffee. Not given the "adult drink" status it has in the states, coffee is definitely the drink of choice of Swedish youth. And there was also the difficulty the translator had with verbal puns. Some of these had to be worked around by explaining what a word means in English. Without these explanations the book's jokes would fall flat.

Finally, my favorite chapter of the book. It was the chapter in which Pippi is invited to a fancy coffee party (see what I meant about kids and coffee?). Pippi attempts desperately to mix and mingle appropriately with the middle-aged lady guests there. When the women start putting down their hired help, Pippi is more than eager to tell multiple increasingly bizarre stories of her grandmother's servant Malin. The ways in which Pippi tells Milan tales becomes more and more extreme until at the end she screams towards the women from the other end of the block, "SHE NEVER SWEPT UNDER THE BEDS". I think you'll have to read the chapter yourself to see just how increasingly hilarious it becomes. It's fabulous stuff.

Every country has its resident red headed heroine. Canada has Anne of Green Gables. America has Caddie Woodlawn. Sweden has Pippi Longstocking. She's the greatest thing since sliced bread and twice as perky. For a fabulous romp through the increasingly ridiculous, I more than recommend this quirky spunky fan-freakin'-tastic book. It hasn't aged a jot.

5-0 out of 5 stars PIPPI MY ALWAYS FRIEND
i`m 30 now.whenever the pressure of life or job or anything which may happen in adults lives keeps pressing on me i return to my pippi books. i live in those shiny pages, run with pippi, shout with pippi, dance with her and her lovely daddy and all darkness around me disappears.she takes me back to my innocence days in which watching an apple or playing with an ant was giving me the greatest joy of life.
in this way astrid and pippi are my always and sweet friends.
    regards,

5-0 out of 5 stars You want to be Pippi? I AM PIPPI!
Pippi reinforced my innate belief that I could do anything I wanted to do and that it was OK to be a strong and brave girl. I grew up in Sweden but ended up fighting drugs and crime while providing housing in American public housing neighborhoods, still buttressed by that Pippi can-do/never-give-up spirit. I'm still lifting horses over my head and scaring the bad guys, all the while having the time of my life. Thank you Pippi and thank you Astrid Lindgren! ... Read more

    Book Description

This book is written by Harold. His fulltime occupation is dog. He lives with Mr. and Mrs. Monroe and their sons Toby and Pete. Also sharing the home are a cat named Chester and a rabbit named Bunnicula. It is because of Bunnicula that Harold turned to writing. Someone had to tell the full story of what happened in the Monroe household after the rabbit arrived.

Was Bunnicula really a vampire? Only Bunnicula knows for sure. But the story of Chester's suspicions and their consequences makes uproarious reading.

Since its first appearance in 1979, Bunnicula has been a hit with kids and their parents everywhere, selling over 8 million copies and winning numerous awards. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars bunnicula
I read the book Bunnicula. It's about a dog named Harold
and a cat named Chester. And of course a rabbit named
    Bunnicula.(not your ordinary cuddley rabbit.)
It all started when harold and chester's owners came
home from a dracula movie. And the owners didn't come
home by themselves. They came with a box with a rabbit
in it.They put the rabbit in a cage. They had some
trouble nameing the rabbit. But they finally found
the name of bunnicula. Probably because of the fact
that they found bunnicula at a dracula movie.
And they sure picked the right name for him. Chester
began to notice that the black spot on Bunnicula looked
like a cape. Chester stayed awake to see what bunnicula
did at night.(I would of though a rabbit would sleep
at night.) Chester noticed that the sly rabbit wasn't
in his cage. He heard a noise in the kitchen. The door
of the kitchen opened. And guess who was hopping happily
out of the kitchen.(That was a sentance from the book.)
The next morning all of the veggitables were white.
On the third time Bunnicula went out for his midnight snack
Chester was prepared. He was trying to starve Bunnicula.
Harold yelled at Chester. Bunnicula looked sick.A few
days later Harold took Bunnicula out of his cage and
lead him to the kitchen. I can't tell the ending because
this is an online review. I recommend this book if you
    like bunny vampires.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still one of my favorites!
My old copy of "Bunnicula" is old and brittle from being read so many times as a kid, and is still a nostalgic favorite. This book is the first of many about the Monroes, an average family with not-so-average pets. First off there is Harold, the "author" of the book, who is an older mutt and is very gentle and somewhat dimwitted. Next there is Chester, a cat who is partial to reading at night (especially Edgar Allan Poe) and therefore has developed an overactive imagination. At first its just the two of them until the Monroes come home from seeing "Dracula" at the movie theater- who have brought home an abandoned bunny rabbit with them! This bunny is very unusual, with black "cape" markings in its fur, sleeps during the day, and drains all the vegetables in the house of their juice and color! Only Chester suspects Bunnicula is a vampire and sets out in a quest to expose the bunny. This is a great book for little kids as well as older ones, and also good for reading out loud to a kid because its not too long either. The sequels which are essential to this book are "Howliday Inn," "The Celery Stalks at Midnight," and "Nighty Nightmare." Those were some of the first to follow up on "Bunnicula" and therefore the best. This should be given to every child who loves a laugh as well as a thrill at the same time. Enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars We loved this book.
Bunnicula is a very good book because it is funny. In this book a cat can read, a dog can write and a bunny sucks juice out of vegetables. Read this book and you will find out how to get rid of vampires, even bunny vampires.
Kids won't like this mystery; they'll love it! If you like animals, you will love this book.
So, if you want to find out more, read the book Bunnicula by James and Deborah Howe.

5-0 out of 5 stars My summary and thoughts of Bunnicula !
Bunnicula was a great book. If I was you I` d read it because it is funny ,scary and, weird. But you will probably like it too! Here` s what I like about it. My favorite character is Bunnicula! 5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this series!
When I was a kid, I loved this series. These books have everything - humor, talking animals, mystery, a vampire rabbit... what more could you want? I just found out there are two books in the series I never read. Even though I am in my mid 20's, I still want to get those and read them. Bunnicula is great for kids of all ages. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Son LOVED These Books!!!!
I have a 7 year old son who really only read when he was required to do so for school.
That was until he started reading the Captain Underpants books. HE LOVES THEM!!!! When he was told it was time to go to bed he said "can't I just stay up until I finish this book". The next morning the first thing he did was pick up the book and finished it.
Your kids (boys especially) will get a kick out of these books.
It is so great to hear your kids reading a book and laughing OUTLOUD!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nevermind Harry Potter, Captain Underpants RULES!
Captain Underpants has been a blessing! My son would not read regardless of the title of the book. Until Captain Underpants! All boys love toilet humor! My only regret is that there are not more Captain Underpants books out yet. Dav Pilkey keep them coming!

5-0 out of 5 stars MR. booger boy
Captain underpants and the big bad battle of the bionic booger boy part 1: the night of the nasty nostril nuggets is one of Dav's best books of the captain underpants series. My favorite character is Harold he's funnier and braver when the fighting the booger boy. My favorite part is when booger boy is snot bad and senses all over the teacher Mrs. Ribble she didn't seem to mind. Have a good laugh with this book its fun

5-0 out of 5 stars These books are laugh-out-loud funny!
George Beard and Harold Hutchins have a little problem; they just can't help being themselves. And being themselves means pulling pranks at school, writing comic books that make fun of authority figures, and changing the lunch menu marquee to make rude comments.

Captain Underpants is a super-hero they made up in one of their comic books. Through a series of so-ridiculous-no-one-could-believe-it events, their school principal BECOMES Captain Underpants, and it's up to these two class clowns to make sure CU doesn't endanger himself. Incredibly bad puns abound. Each book has a copy of one of the boys' "Treehouse Comics." And there are plenty of gross jokes that grade-school kids love.

This is the sort of book that will get kids to read even if they otherwise hate reading. Enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Adventures of Tintin Volume 1
    Tintin in America:
The first well known Tintin book "Tintin in America" begins where reporter Tintin and his trusty canine companion Snowy get off of a train in Chicago in order to solve a new mystery. They come to investigate the doings of the largest gang in Chicago. On their way the gang finds out they're being investigated and try to stop Tintin. Tintin has many close calls and chases, and on top of that some very good luck. I reccomend this book to anyone who loves mystery, suspense, and a great comic.

    The Cigars of the Pharaohs:
The second Tintin story begins where Tintin and Snowy stumble on a new mystery on a cruise ship. A man claims to know where the temple of an Egyptian Pharaoh is and Tintin and Snowy go along with him for fun. This temple had been visited before by someone else and Tintin had to find out who made the visit and why not all come out. This book gives the same suspense and mystery as most of the other Tintin books and I reccomend it just as much as all the others.

    The Blue Lotus:
After a few days in royalty in India, Tintin is summoned to a new mystery in China. This time he has to investigate the doings of a secret drug dealer, the only problem is that they are too secret. Ofcourse this book has mystery and suspense and I reccomend it to any person who loves the genre.

This 3 volume book is classic Tintin and I love it so much. It's the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tintin and Snowy rock!
I love Tintin books and this one is no exception. I like the size of the book, the hardcover has a good binding so that it doesn't come apart and with three adventures in one you are getting a great deal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Want to keep your boys quiet? Give them the book!
I gave this book along with vol. 2 to my nephews at 5th grade and 1st grade and they can't put them down after the 1st page. So I decide to buy the whole collection for them.

    (...);-P

Great gifts for kids at the age to open their mind and explore the world!

5-0 out of 5 stars Watch out - Small Size
Watch out, this 3-in-one comes in a smaller size than the regular single adventures. Makes it harder to read and harder to enjoy the graphics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tin Tin- comic extrodinaire'
Tin-Tin is comicbook creation the way it should be!
Tin-Tin is NOT political correctness, it depicks human beings, events as they are, whether evil or good.
You'll be surprised comparing of todays wishy-washy P.C. comics to Tin-Tin..
It has morals, values, perhaps a bit over the top sometimes since black & white issues were more defined years ago..
The artwork is extremely good, even when some panels only have 1 sentance. Tin-Tin will take you to another time & place.

Pippi is an irrepressible, irreverent, and irrefutably delightful nine-year-old girl who lives alone (with a monkey) in her wacky house, Villa Villekulla. When she's not dancing with the burglars who were just trying to rob her house, she's attempting to learn the "pluttification" tables at school; fighting Adolf, the strongest man in the world at the circus; or playing tag with police officers. Pippi's high-spirited, good-natured hijinks cause as much trouble as fun, but a more generous child you won't find anywhere. Astrid Lindgren has created a unique and lovable carrot-topped character, inspiring generations of children to want to be Pippi. The first Pippi Longstocking was published in America in 1950, and this fine, newly illustrated collection includes Pippi Goes on Board and Pippi in the South Seas. Pippi makes reading pure pleasure. 5-0 out of 5 stars Every child should read this book!
I grew up in a rural environment and each summer I waited for the weekly visits of our local bookmobile. I can't tell you how many times I checked out "Pippi Longstocking", but my mother worried that I would take root under the maple tree in our front yard, my favorite reading spot. I am now 47 years old and have recently finished Sena Jeter Naslund's "Ahab's Wife"--a brilliant companion to Melville's "Moby Dick"--and who should come to mind but my old friend Pippi.

My recommendation: Give this book to your children, especially to girls...let them grow up to be sailors, firefighters, dancers, mothers and fathers...whatever their souls dream of. We all need a little bit of Pippi these days.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Chililug chugger is back...
Pippi Longstocking is a lot of things. She plays with sparklers, she plays with guns, she resists arrest, flaunts her supernatural power, manhandles bothersome adults, insults them and disregards them as silly. She's self-important, arrogant, callous, rude, undignified, and absolutely perfect.
Maybe the former LEADS to the latter, because I can't think of any other way she could be all of those things so perfectly. Pippi is the kind of character who, although she seems so terribly foolish, is somehow always right. Pippi is, in that respect, to elementary school children what Superman is to the people of metropolis. She so totally represents everything they hold dear that she can't help but become their champion, despite, or perhaps because of the fact that she's a universal "bad girl."
This book contains every one of her "popularly-recognized" adventures, with new illustrations by some fellow who's really good at drawing pictures of Pippi and her friends. The pictures are slick and cartoon-like in keeping with the sometimes-wacky-but-always-credible-somehow escapades of the girl wonder. Pippi owns an old, run-down villa and a horse and monkey. She keeps her horse on the porch, and her monkey on her shoulder when she goes for a walk. But the strangest thing in the house is Pippi herself, whose resources consist of a seemingly endless supply of gold, a vast collection of rare trinkets, and an endless supply of youthful energy and superhuman strength, probably equal to the task of lifting a small steamroller. She also possesses great durability and the seeming ability to leap great distances with enormous speed. Her skills in seemingly all tests of acrobatics and hand-eye coordination are top-knotch. In short, she was a self-insertion character before there was such a thing.
However, with Pippi, it works, because rather than pretend that she's up against some terrible foe or trying to add tension to the story, Pippi lives her life almost strictly for the humor and fun of it. Anything that keeps people from having fun is something Pippi will generally try to plow right through.
Pippi has the ultimate secret. She knows how to have fun, and if wisdom comes from the mouths of babes, than Pippi is indeed, faults and all, the wisest person who has ever lived.
As a closing note, I'm probably not the only person who hopes that Pippi's "Chililug" pills are real immortality medication, because that would mean that she is still around, and still having fun somewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars I had The Biggest Crush On Pippi Longstocking When I Eight
I always wanted a house that could fly. The Adventures Of Pippi Longstocking is a wonderful Story in every sense of the word.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite icon
My mother read this story to me some 40 years ago. I remember the character vividly as if it was yesterday. It has become one of the all time favorites of children that I have had the pleasure to reading to over the years... Pippi was never afraid no matter what, looked for the best in everyone she meet (and got it) and had problems that she solved, often uniquely. All important lessons for children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pippi Longstocking
I think Pippi Longstocking is a very creative character. Pippi longstocking has a good imagination. Astrid Lindgren is a good writer, I think some of the author's just write to impress people but I think you actually care about what people think about your books. 4-0 out of 5 stars Students love this book!
The Adventures of Captain Underpants by author Dav Pilkey is one of the silliest books this teacher has seen. Both girls and boys enjoy this book. The story is about two charactors named George and Harold. The two are best friends and enjoy stirring up trouble around their grade school. George and Harold also enjoy writing a comic they call 'Captian Underpants.' Mr. Krupp is the principal at the boy's school. One day George and Harold pull some pranks that get them into a lot of trouble with Mr. Krupp. Mr. Krupp punishes the boys by making them do extra work and behave. The boys do not like this so they devise a plan to hynotize Mr. Krupp with a hypnosis ring. To make a long story short, the two boys hynotize Mr. Krupp into Captain Underpants and that's where the real adventures in the book begin. Readers will find themselves laughing outloud. Some of the funny things in the book include Dr. Diaper, flip-o-rama, and the pranks that George and Harold play. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a sense of humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Semper Ubi Sub Ubi
George Beard and Harold Hutchins have a little problem; they just can't help being themselves. And being themselves means pulling pranks at school, writing comic books that make fun of authority figures, and changing the lunch menu marquee from entrees to incredibly rude comments.

And inside this book is a copy of the boys' "Treehouse Comics" showing the original Captain Underpants idea. Bonus: there are plenty of gross jokes that grade-school kids love.

This is the sort of book that will get kids to read even if they otherwise hate reading. My 2 kids (1st & 3rd grade) just love this entire series. It's obvious that author Dav Pilkey had a lot of fun writing this book. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The First In A Series Of Humorous Novels
First off, Dav Pilkey is a funny guy that writes great books. Probably his most popular novels are the Captain Underpants series. The Adventures of Captain Underpants is the first one in this kid-popular series. Here's the overall scoop:
George and Harold (two 4th graders) have a problem. They have a 'silly streak' a mile long. Sometimes, that 'silly streak' gets them in trouble. Big trouble. I'm not going to ruin the surprise, but I'll tell you that what's ahead has action, thrills and laughs.

Captain Underpants is funny and is a way to waste a half hour. Yeah, you can finish this in 30 minutes, 20 if you're fast. That's my only complaint about this book. It's unbelievably short, even if it is 121 pages. The chapters can't even be considered chapters because they're about 4 pages long. The pages have 1-5 sentences each, so the book isn't long at all.
You won't grow attached to the characters, but you won't hate them either. Another cool aspect of the book is the Flip-O-Rama pages where you get excitement just by flipping a page. I'm pretty sure you'll like this book, but if you're 20 years plus, you may find it disgusting and dumb. Because you don't think kid humor is funny. All in all, The Adventures of Captain Underpants started the series off good and grew into a series that enchants kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars A convert to potty humor
Potty humor has never been my thing but after reading a poll of children's authors naming Dav Pilkey today's funniest children's writer I broke down and bought the book. I was laughing so hard I could barely read it to my children. Okay, I'm exaggerating, but that is almost true.

Pilkey actually uses wonderful vocabulary words and intelligent humor along with his doo-doo words and diaper jokes. The mix is fantastic and shows that intelligence does not preclude silliness and the lack of intelligence may cause you to miss out on a lot of fun.

The illustrations are integral to the story beginning on page one. There are pictures (very amusing pictures) on every page which keep my 4-year-old interested and the flip-o-rama action is genius (in a low-tech sort of chapter book way.)

Don't be afraid to check out this book...you may actually enjoy it or even love it like I do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Undie head
The main characters of the book are George, Harold, and Captain Underpants. These characters are all very cool and funny. George and Harold always start the book out with funny. George and Harold always get in trouble for dumb reasons. Then in the middle of the book Captain Underpants comes in and (Well Mr. Krupt turns into him) and saves them or what ever is in trouble.
Teachers hate them two boys. They are always pulling pranks on the teachers. They find something dumb and make it funny like putting stuff in the drinks to make them grow...dumb stuff like that.
My opinion of this book is that it is really good book. The author Dav Pilkey did a really good job with the characters. He made them say the right things at the right time. ... Read more

    Book Description

This wonderful Ramona Box Set, by Beverly Cleary, contains four books: Ramona the Brave, Ramona the Pest, Beezus and Ramona, and Ramona Quimby, Age 8.

    Beezus and Ramona

Beezus tries very hard to be patient with her little sister, but four-your-old Ramona has a habit of doing the most unpredictable, annoying, embarrassing things in the world. Sometimes Beezus doesn't like Ramona much, and that makes her feel guilty. Sisters are supposed to love each other, but pesky little Ramona doesn't seem very lovable to Beezus right now.

    Ramona the Pest

Ramona is off to kindergarten, and it is the greatest day of her life. She loves her teacher, Miss Binney, and she likes a little boy named Davy so much she wants to kiss him. So why does Ramona get in so much trouble? And how does Ramona manage to disrupt the whole class during rest time? Anyone who knows Ramona knows that she never tries to be a pest.

    Ramona the Brave

Now that she's six and entering the first grade, Ramona is determined to be brave, but it's not always easy, with a scary new all-by-herself bedroom, her mother's new job, and a new teacher who just doesn't understand how hard Ramona is trying to grow up.

    Ramona Quimby, Age 8

Ramona feels quite grown up taking the bus by herself, helping big sister Beezus make dinner, and trying hard to be nice to pesky Willa Jean after school. Turning eight years old and entering the third grade can do that to a girl. So how can her teacher call her a nuisance? Being a member of the Quimby family in the third grade is harder than Ramona expected.

My mom gave me my first Ramona books when I was a young child and they fueled my desire to read and to continue reading. To this day I am obsessed with books. : ) Thanks to the wonderful Ramona series which got me started reading. I recommend this to young children and to the parents of young children who wish to encourage their children to read and love books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beverly Cleary, An author that caught my attention
I am 20 years old now, but I have read almost all of Beverly Cleary's books and enjoyed them all. The first one that I read was Dear Mr. Henshaw and it was read aloud to the class when I was in 3rd grade. I was hooked. I recommend her books to all ages. I have read all the Ramona and Mouse on a Motorcycle series as well as Henry Huggins.

4-0 out of 5 stars One Small Caution
Excellent books. But be warned: you may have to translate some of the awkward phrases and expressions that seem to pop up throughout Cleary's books. I thought she might be European, until I read her bio today. Expressions like "Gay" (meaning happy) and "Crayoning" (which perplexed my daughter until I explained that in America we call it "Coloring.")Things like that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ageless
I read and reread these books to my daughters, and I am delighted to be able to read them to my granddaughters! It is so much fun to snuggle in bed and read Ramona books! Ageless and priceless...

5-0 out of 5 stars Still a favorite
I read these books as a child, and loved them. Ramona deals with childhood tribulations (fear of going to the principal's office, worrying about her family when her father loses his job, having to play with her friend's little sister whom she detests) that most children experience in some variation, and so a child can identify with her as they read and feel reassured by the fact that they are not the only one who has gone through these things. Also, many of her mischevious adventures are so entertaining and wonderful (for instance, when she makes a "toothpaste cake" in the bathroom sink using the entire tube of toothpaste). Even as an adult, I still find myself reaching for these sometimes to be reassured by an old friend and to re-live a childhood comfort. ... Read more

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle has been wildly popular with children and adults for over 50 years. Children adore her because she understands them--and because her upside-down house is always filled with the smell of freshly baked cookies, and her backyard with buried treasure. Grownups love her because her magical common sense solutions to children's problems succeed when their own cajoling and yelling don't. For the child who refuses to bathe, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle recommends letting her be. Wait until the dirt on her body has accumulated to half an inch, then scatter radish seeds on her arms and head. When the plants start sprouting, the nonbather is guaranteed to change her mind about that bath.

Hilary Knight's (Eloise, Sunday Morning) delightful pictures provide lively, droll accompaniment to Betty MacDonald's refreshing stories. Whether Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle is curing Answer-Backers or Slow-Eater-Tiny-Bite-Takers, her remedies always work like a charm. More than one parent over the years has surreptitiously turned to Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle when Dr. Spock failed to come through. (Ages 8 to 12) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

My mother read these books to me as a child. Every night my brother and I would listen to fantastic tales of a woman who lived in an upsidedown house and taught naughty children lessons in genlte, understanding and creative ways. I can say without a doubt that my love for Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle fostered my love for books. Definately a book to share with the children you love.

I have little cousins and siblings and I love to read them Mrs.Piggle Wiggle books, and they love them. I think her cures are very funny, cute, and some can be used in real-life if you would like! But all I can say is that I think and most people will agree with me that all Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books are the best!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite book as a child
I wanted to live in Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's house as a child. This is one of the best children's books ever.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book for All Children
I first read these books when I was young. While some of the themes may at first seem outdated for todays generation, the lessons that these books teach span all ages and cultures. Every parent has had a situation with one of their children that resembles one of these stories. Children can get a laugh out of the lighthearted humor, and still learn valuable lessons about their behavior and about right etiquette.

5-0 out of 5 stars If Only Problems Went Away This Easily
Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle is the neighbor everyone wishes they had. She's the widow of a pirate, lives in an upside down house, and is always ready for a tea party with freshly baked cookies. She's such an expert on kids that parents have started calling on her wisdom to cure their kids when they start misbehaving. And whether it's making chores into a game or getting kids to take a bath, she's sure to have the answer to make everyone happy again.

I loved these books as a kid, and this book is just as fun now. The stories fall into a predictable pattern, but that hardly diminishes their enjoyment. Each chapter is a self-contained story, so it's easy to read just a little bit at a time. Unlike other books in the series that feature magic cures, these stories feature what I recognize now as psychology to cure the kids. The humor comes from the exaggeration of the problem and what the child goes through to get "cured." For example, the parent's fighting in the "Fighter Quarrelers Cure" or the tiny dishes in the "Slow Eater Tiny Bite Taker Cure." Heck, by the time the "Never Want to go to Bedders" are cured, they are actually begging to go to bed at their normal bedtime.

Reading the book as an adult, I got a few good laughs out of the names of the parent's friends. I also found it interesting that very few of the adults have an identity apart from their kids. Then again, as a kid's novel, it presents a kid's eye view of the world. I hope these books continue to entertain for years to come. ... Read more

Junie B. Jones and all of Room 9 are getting ready to graduate from kindergarten! Their teacher--known to our heroine as "Mrs."--distributes their fresh white caps and gowns ("Cats and gowns, cats and gowns!" Junie hollers), and makes her students promise to keep them in their boxes until the big day. But Junie B., being Junie B., is sure that just one peek on the way home won't soil her gown. And then she must show off to her stuffed animals with a lot of whirling and skipping, which of course makes her thirsty. But guess what? "Grape juice can go wrong."

The 17th title in Barbara Park's popular Junie B. Jones beginning chapter book series is filled with more messy antics from the irrepressible 6-year-old with the rather unusual speaking style. She may be trouble, but Junie B. Jones has definite six-appeal. Don't miss any of the titles in this lively series, from Junie B. Jones Has a Peep in Her Pocket to Junie B. Jones and Some Sneaky Peeky Spying to Junie B. Jones Is Captain Field Day. Denise Brunkus's witty drawings deftly capture the tragicomedies of kindergarten life. Although the cute-precocious style may eventually grate on grownups' nerves, kids won't tire of Junie B.'s everyday adventures. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Funniest Books in the World!
This book was about how Junie B. (Don't forget the B!) was getting ready for graduation from Kindergarten. ...And she got popular because she accidentally got purple drops on her cap and gown, so everyone else drew colored polka dots on their gowns.

I liked this because Junie B. is very funny. I liked this book as much as "Junie B and the Stinky Smelly Bus" and I think other kids would like to read it too.

Mom's Note: "This was the first Junie B. book that I have read with my daughter (she read another one in school) and it was absolutely adorable. Ms. Park captures the essence of a kindergartener by telling the story in the first-person, from little Junie B's perspective and she does a wonderful job. It really sounds like a Kindergartener is telling the story, which makes it all the more enjoyable. I'm looking forward to reading more of these with my daughter!"

5-0 out of 5 stars What a hoot!
Junie B. Jones is a mischievous little girl who is learning the lessons of life. Our family has enjoyed each book in this series. We can't wait to see what she's up to next. The Junie B. Jones series is a great first chapter book series for beginning readers. My children have sometimes balked at reading time, but when it's a Junie B. Jones book, they read it from cover to cover without stopping. In this book, Junie B. is finally graduating from kindergarten. The lessons learned in this book are obedience...the consequence of not obeying, and also friendship and loyalty. The children are given white graduation caps and gowns and told not to play in them. Junie B.'s mother even puts hers on top of the refrigerator so Junie B. cannot play with them. Of course, a mischievous little girl such as Junie B. cannot help herself and devises a way to get the gown down. The gown becomes soiled and Junie B. must find a way to cover it up. I thought it was a great book, though I think she kind of got of the hook this time. I took the book to school and read it to the second graders there. They loved it too. They think Junie B. Jones is a hoot!

4-0 out of 5 stars Junie B. Jones Is A Graduation Girl (Book 17)
It's kindergarten graduation! All the children in Room Nine are excited when they get their bright white graduation gowns. Mrs. says to keep them in their boxes until the big day. But Junie B. Jones just can't help herself. Then - uh-oh! - an accident happens! Can Junie B. find a way to fix things? Or will graduation day be a spotty dotty disaster?

1-0 out of 5 stars No so funny...
This one isn't as funny as the other ones. It didn't make me laugh. Junie B. is spoiled and a bad influence to little kids (it's not the grammmer) she just gets her own way. And my little brother's and I, don't like it. Junie B. is loosing her spunk, especially in 1st grade!

5-0 out of 5 stars Junie B Jones is a Graduation Girl (#17)
Junie B. Jones gets her dress and hat for graduation day, and she is supposed to keep it in the box on the refridgerator, but then she gets it down and spills grape juice on it! When I first read it, I was kind of surprised that Junie B. won't be in kindergarten anymore. But this is not the last book! The next book she is in first grade! I have all these books, but I lost one. I noticed that when you buy these from a bookstore, they have the number on the side, but if you order them at school, you can't tell which number it is. I did get mine at the book fair at school, and it has the number on the side, but if you buy them from the book order papers, they don't have the number. Junie B. Jones is a Graduation Girl is funny. It is kind of short, though. ... Read more

Move over, Captain Underpants! There's a tiny new superhero in town.Undaunted by Principal Krupp's insistence that their essay assignment on goodcitizenship not be another comic book about the briefs-clad warrior, fourth graders George and Harold decide to invent a new superhero. Super DiaperBaby is born! It's up to our fearless infant hero to save the planet fromdiabolical Deputy Doo-Doo and his reluctantly evil pooch, Danger Dog ("I'm notreally evil. I'm just in it for the kibbles."). Several robotic battles, intergalactic digressions, and "flip-o-ramas" later, Super Diaper Baby has donehis duty, and George and Harold are in trouble yet again with their principal.Still, it was worth it, as any fan of Dav Pilkey's lowbrow, scatologicallyinclined "epic novels" (TheAdventures of Captain Underpants, Captain Underpants and the Wrath of theWicked Wedgie Woman, etc.) will attest. George and Harold's spelling isatrocious, their humor is straight off the grade school playground, and kidslove every page of it. (Ages 8 to 12) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is hilarous!
I have read this book several times, and I laugh out loud every time I read it. Dav Pilkey has never written a book which didn't make me laugh. I like how the villain was trying to steal super powers, but instead he got turned into poop. When Super Diaper Baby 2 comes out, I'll be sure to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is recommended for everyone seeking a laugh.
Once again George Beard and Harold Hutchins, the boys responsible for the hilarious comic-book series involving the adventures of Captain Underpants, are up to their old antics. One day they're happily playing in the school gym, squishing ketchup packets under their skateboard wheels, and who should come by but that mean principal, Mr. Krupp. For punishment, the boys have to clean the gym floor and write a 100-page essay on "Good Citizenship," with strict instructions not to turn in a 100-page "Captain Underpants" comic book. As they mope over this assignment, George is struck by a great idea: Why not create a new super hero and write about him? The boys go home and create the greatest world protector ever known to potty training, Super Diaper Baby.

Fans of the toilet humor seen in the previous "Captain Underpants" books, or anyone who's a fourth-grader at heart, will laugh out loud at the villain that gets turned into a piece of poop and his newborn nemesis, the only one stopping him from world domination. The pages are packed with gross jokes, Flip-O-Rama, and subtle humor especially appreciated by older readers. While this book is recommended for everyone seeking a laugh, it should come with a warning: Read this book in private or only around people who know you --- anyone else might think you're crazy for laughing out loud, seemingly at random.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Diaper Baby Rules!
This book is hilarious! This is a great book to read, and you can't put it down. I laugh everytime I read it. It may have some crude humor about human waste but what they show on t.v. these days is MUCH worse. A great book and worth many reads. A+++++

5-0 out of 5 stars The Funniest Book Ever
The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby is action-packed, funny ,and quirky. The character fight many foes such as the Robo Ant 2000 and Deputy Doo-Doo. The characters weren't that bright and they kept on making mistakes. The characters did nonsense things such as the spanking of life and switching signs. I think that you should read this book it's hilarious and exciting, and a little strange.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super diaper baby kicks butt!
I suggest this book for kids who like comedy. I think it's by Dav Pilkey but it says George & Harold. It's about a baby who becomes a hero by getting spanked. Also he has a arch enemy, Deputy doo-doo (If you ask me it sounds yucky). I think its awesome because of the story & how it goes. I enjoy it and I hope you do to!
P.s. It also has the world famous,Cheesey animation, Flip o rama! ... Read more
