Book Description

Did you know that the world's favorite snack is popcorn? That what you eat every year could fill about 170 grocery bags? That fewer than half of the world's people use a knife, fork, and spoon? Welcome to the world of "Food Rules!" Cool enough for kids to savor, scientific enough to be an invaluable resource, this is the most comprehensive book on food and nutrition ever created for kids. It's full of mouthwatering stories, jokes, recipes, rumors, and facts, and a supermarket of zany illustrations. Definitely food for thought. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun for kids
What a marvelous book. It explains the functions of digestion in a fun way. It has a couple of "fart" and "poop" jokes which are entirely appropriate to a book about food and nutrition, and allows a kid to hear a little "naughty" joke, but the clean kind of naughtiness that a kid can laugh at, instead of the "dirty" jokes that they are probably being exposed to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Haduch rules!
As a kid who likes science and math, I think Haduch rules! I have read several of Mr. Haduch's science books and they are always funny and full of good information. I even used his book on tornadoes for a school project (and got an "A".)The food book is very funny while telling you about science and how your body uses food. I hope he does a book on dinosaurs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Science and nutrition made fun for kids.
Now maybe kids will eat what's good for them! This book is one of the rare kids' books that addresses kids as people to be talked to and entertained....not to be talked down to or preached at. As a mom who has kids interested in science....and off-the-wall humor...I appreciate a book that combines both. Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of a Kind!
This hilarious and well-researched book is, by far, the best children's book on nutrition I've seen. Haduch's well-crafted prose both instructs and entertains; the book is filled with off-beat facts and wacky humor to keep kids laughing while they learn important health information. Every school and public library should have this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK
THIS IS A GREAT BOOK. MELISSA AND JORY'S FRIENDSHIP IS GREAT. JORY STAYS BY MELISSA DURING HER WORST TIMES WITH THE LEUKEMIA. THAT'S THE BEST THING I LIKE ABOUT THE BOOK. ALSO I LIKED THE WAY MELISSA SLOWLY ACCEPTS HER DEATH. GREAT BOOK.

4-0 out of 5 stars Combined Stories
This book is actually composed of two novels that were previously published. This is the story of Melissa and Jory, two best friends from very different backgrounds. The first book is from Melissa's point of view when we find out she has cancer and how she copes with that. Melissa's brother, Jory's not-so-secret crush, doesn't take the news well and seems to be against the world. The second story continues with the friendship and tells how Jory learns to cope with Melissa having cancer. This is a classic Lurlene McDaniel book for all thos familiar with her work. For first timers I do recommend this book and I ask what took you so long to discover McDaniel's wonderful books. I liked it because it gave two different views and it made the characters have depth. I really recommend the One Last Wish series and the Dawn Rochelle novels for those who want to read more of McDaniel's work. ... Read more

Unfortunately, she found nothing written for children trying to cope with the anxiety and upset such news brings. 5-0 out of 5 stars A top pick for children coping with cancer in the family
This is one of the best books we found when our family was dealing with a recent cancer diagnosis. It is sensitive and caring and provides concrete examples for positive steps families can take to help children cope successfully with a tough situation. Appropriate for our children, aged 3,5, and 7, it is a book even adults will appreciate. We have used the "Paper Chain" concept to reach out to adult friends hospitalized for a variety of reasons. We found that its broad potential gave us a way to talk about cancer in the context of many illnesses -- and how coping skills are useful for everyone. ... Read more

Book Description

One of the world’s foremost sleep educators, Dr. James B. Maas of Cornell University, unveils his first children’s book, Remmy and the Brain Train. The author, who teaches the nation’s largest university lecture course, uses his award-winning pedagogical expertise to create a fun multi-dimensional learning experience for children ages 4 to 8. Remmy and the Brain Train is designed to help improve a child’s daytime alertness, mood and performance. The book is a follow-up to Maas’s New York Times bestseller, Power Sleep (Random House and Harper Collins), widely praised as successful in helping adults enjoy a happier, healthier and more productive life.

Remmy and the Brain Train follows a tired young Remmy through a groggy day of exhaustion and confusion. He has trouble with math, spelling and remembering names, and is feeling moody, upset and sad…but does not know why. That night Remmy is visited by the irrepressible magical train conductor, Doctor Zeez, who whisks him off on an exciting adventure through the Land of Good Sleep. Here Remmy learns of the voyage his mind and body embarks on every night, and how developing good sleep habits makes him stronger, smarter, happier and healthier.

Remmy and the Brain Train is illustrated by Guy Danella and includes a read-along, sing-along CD by award-winning children’s songwriter/performer Suzanne Scheniman. A myriad of sound effects enrich the detailed whimsical illustrations depicting Remmy’s world. Suzanne's wonderful "Sea Songs" can be obtained on amazon.com in the popular music section. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Its sleepy time!
Kids today aren't getting enough sleep. It is obvious when you look at the number of children who are being labeled as having ADD or ADHD, when all they really need is more sleep. If you are a parent of a young child, I highly recommend this book, not just for your child(ren) but for parents too. Its important for parents and children to understand how sleep, or lack of sleep affects the body and more importantly, the mind. Remmy and Dr. Zeez help children to understand why they need to get their sleep and how they can benefit from getting 9 hours of GOOD sleep every night. I'm all ready reading this with my 6 week old daughter. The play along CD which accompanies the book is a great bonus which I find relaxes me as well as my daughter as it is played. Enjoy some good rest...you and your child(ren) deserve it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic journey that educates while it entertains!
"Remmy and the Brain Train" is an exhilerating ride that will fascinate both parents and their young children, a rare accomplishment in children's literature. It's a clever, behind-the-scenes look at the values of sleep, that is just as educational for my husband and I, the parents of an inquisitive 5 year old, as it is for my son. Through the delightfully fun dialogue of Dr. James Maas's characters we are taken on a nightly journey to the land of great sleep and are cheerfully explained the benefits of bedtime...something ALL parents can appreciate! "Remmy and the Brain Train" is the perfect marriage of a working didactic tool and an imaginative, creative fairy tale. The principles behind better sleep are woven seamlessly into the story, and because awkward textbook jargon is thankfully nowhere to be found, our son actually understands why sleep is important! Just as I was intrigued and motivated by Dr. Maas's first book, Power Sleep, a few years ago, so now is my child by this, his first foray into children's literature. I would recommend "Remmy" heartily to all parents who want to raise a happy and healthy child!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book
My almost 4 year old received this as a Christmas Gift and he loves it! The accompanying CD makes it even better with a calming rythem and memorable phrases.

5-0 out of 5 stars Remmy ant the Brain Train
A very good book and the CD by Suzanne Scheniman is outstanding! It's geared toward children, but even adults will listen over and over.

5-0 out of 5 stars And poetry to boot!
Maas does a fine job in explaining to children why it's important to sleep. He writes in rhyme, and the colorful funny pictures add to the entertainment.

For adults, I give my strongest recommendation for Dr. William Dement's The Promise of Sleep. Stanford sleep researcher Dement covers everything from sleep pathology, dreams, and how sleep-load even affects your intelligence and internal organs. If you love a medical detective story, or just want help in physically feeling better, go check it out! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A 5 star book for young children!
"Parts" by Tedd Arnold is a hilarious book for young children. My son received it as a gift from his kindergarten teacher. It was perfect timing as he was starting to loose his teeth. It's the story of a young boy, who upon loosing his teeth, among other things, thinks that he is falling apart! We just laughed and laughed over this book and read it again and again. I even buy it as a birthday present for all my nieces and nephews for their fifth birthday!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids LOVE It!
I used to read this book to children for story time. The kids loved it! You could see the range of emotion in their faces as the story progressed, and the look of relief with the conclusion of the story.

This book makes it easy to explain to kids what's going on with their body, and reassures them that they are not falling apart.

The illustrations are outstanding, really attention getting, and tie in perfectly with the story. Without a doubt, the favorite part of youngsters I read this story to. They all wanted to fully examine every image.

This book is guaranteed loads of giggles from your aduience, as well as yourself. :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Riot
My 3 yr. old daughter loves this book. It's very funny, although, at times, a little gross. A little boy thinks he's coming apart when he finds, hair, ear wax, belly button lint, etc. My child now tells me that her stuffing's coming out whenever she has belly button lint, so be prepared for the consequences of reading this hilarious book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too funny!
This was one of the funniest kids books I have ever read. The story is fun and the pictures added to the fun. A must have for any child's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!
Since purchasing this original for my son, it has gone through three children, all of whom can't get enough of this book. this book is really cool. it gives you great directions and as a whole, picks recipes that include ingredients you could find at home. it also includes essential oils and other must-haves. this book is really fun and would make a great gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Klutz Strikes Again!
I have to say, I'm a sucker for Klutz books. They give simple, easy to read instructions, and you get all of the supplies to do it with! How fun!
The Body Book is my favorite book of all, though. It has tons of recepies for your skin, hair, face, hands, nails, and feet. All the ingredients I have tried so far have made a signifant difference after I tried them! The book includes three essensial oil bottles, a shower cap, tools for your nails, a foot scrub, and a face brush. The pictures in the book are beautiful as well, which makes it all the more worthwile to read. Who would I suggest this book to? Girls 12 and up, teenage girls would especially love it, but I'm sure many women would too! It makes a great gift!

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT for preteens, girls with sensitive skin, and scientists
****My mom bought this for 10-year-old Amanda, who has eczema, and has to be careful what she puts on her skin.
~ - ~ - ~
For other pre teens who need to be careful of skin, - this is great! You know what the ingredients are, as you make the concoctions yourself. Now all can join the herbal and scented shampoo/body potion craze.
****
Directions are easy to follow, but be prepared for a little searching for a couple ingredients (we initially had trouble finding sea salt which was used in one of the best recipes)

Great recipes included milk bath for dry skin, and salt skin scrubs (seriously-feels great!) for mild exfoliating and skin softening.

Pre-teens and teens can follow recipe instructions fairly easily, but may need help shopping for a couple of the more hard to find ingredients. (Natural beauty supply stores and the Internet helped)

****Lots of good, *clean*, healthy fun, attractive to young teen girls

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh my gosh! This book is AWSOME!
I recently purchased this book and it is fantastic! It has recipes for hair, face, hands, feet, etc. I've tried some recipes and they actually work! 4-0 out of 5 stars Theo. LeSieg on the importance of caring for your teeth
You start off reading "The Tooth Book" wondering why Dr. Seuss, writing under his Theo. LeSieg pseudonym, is taking so much time answering the question "Who has teeth?" That is because the answer seems rather obvious and even more so when this book gets to the importance of teeth to chewing, smiling, speaking, and trapeze artists who are supporting their partners by something they are holding on to with their teeth. Then the book touches on a few animals that do not have teeth, and again you find yourself asking "So what?" At which point the book springs it trap and we find out that "The Tooth Book" is not only entertaining, it is (surprise, surprise) educational as well.

The final section of this book is devoted to the idea of protecting your teeth because you only get two sets. Even though kids will lose their first set of teeth, they do not get the same deal on their second set so keeping them in good shape would be a good thing. Some of the advice is, as you would expect from Dr. Seuss, a bit absurd (do not use your teeth to chomp down trees like beavers), but most of it is on target, even if the book does not go into much depth. The illustrations, as is usually the case with "LeSeig," who writes more about the real world than Dr. Seuss, is by a different illustrator than the author, in this case Roy McKie. Dr. Seuss does wonderfully strange animals and people, while McKie illustrates them in a more conventional manner.

"The Tooth Book" is one of the Bright and Early Books for Beginning Beginners. However, obviously you want to pick your moment before introducing this particular book to your young child. Even when you kid starts losing their baby teeth it might be too soon for them to read this one, but certainly when you are teaching them to care for their permanent teeth this is a book that will be helpful in giving them an idea of what to expect. "LeSieg" does not provide specific things for kids to do to help keep their teeth in good shapes, but that information can certainly come from other sources. But he does at least get beginning beginner readers to think favorable about dental care (and even dentists as well).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
My 3-year-old loves this book! It gives the youngsters the idea of baby teeth and permentent teeth. The pictures are cute and the text are fun too. My son giggles every time we read it to him.

1-0 out of 5 stars illustrations are not multi-cultural
You get a view into 60's white america. The only people of color in this book are a policeman, and a caricature. I don't have a problem with other Seuss books where they are set in fantasy land and the whole world is make believe. This is set in everyday life, and I think its best left on the bookshelf, it has nothing to offer my child who has and who lives in a world where folks have brown eyes and black hair, not to mention various shades of skin colour. The rhyming is also not entertaining enough to enjoy and makeup for this one-dimensional "white" depiction of the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Preschool Reading Education About Teeth and Teething!
Adults can quickly forget that children spend much of their time from ages 2 through 10 either getting teeth or losing their baby teeth. It is seldom a pleasant experience (except perhaps if a generous tooth fairy is involved), and must make a child feel like it will never end. Dr. Seuss (writing under his pen name of Theo. LeSieg, an anagram of Geisel) has created the world's best book for helping children learn about teeth, teething, and how to read. What a great gift for each generation of youngsters!

The book is conveniently organized into the kind of questions a reporter would ask.

Who has teeth? These include red-headed uncles, policemen, zebras, unicycle riders, camels and their riders, and little girls named Ruthie.

Where are there teeth? You will find them on mountain tops, in the air, underground, east, west, north, south, and in a lion's mouth.

Why are there teeth? "They come in handy when you chew." But they are also useful for smiling, work (especially if you are an acrobat and hold someone by your teeth), and speech.

Who doesn't have teeth? The snails and jelly fish are sadly bereft.

What about peoples' teeth? You will grow 2 sets, with 32 in the second set. And you will not get any more, so you'd better take care of them. So don't chew trees like a beaver, or use your teeth to open bottles, or eat sweet junk food ("Billy Billings [has] fifty fillings.").

For you, they will always be "handy when you smile. So keep your teeth around awhile."

"And never bite your dentist . . . your teeth's best friend. Bite someone else instead."

The humorous treatment of the tooth subject will help intrigue your child. You can expect to get questions about why all of these toothy things occur, so you should probably look up the answers before you introduce the book to optimize the educational opportunity. Or talk to your dentist or dental hygienist on your next visit.

The illustrations are not by Dr. Seuss in this new edition, but they are wonderfully done. The teeth are large, in the center of your attention, and beautiful. This serves to underscore the message of having teeth be a positive part of everyone's life.

As a prereader, this book is good for repetition. The words "tooth" and "teeth" are almost everywhere. This can help your child learn to identify those words. When that identification can be done, you can point to the words in the story when you come to them and your child can "read" them to you then aloud. You can eventually add other words that are repeated like "smile" and the articles like "a" and "the."

The illustrations can add clues to allow you to help your youngster identify other words like "red" and "trombones."

After you have finished enjoying this story, I suggest that at some point you begin to ask parallel questions about other parts of the body. This approach can help expand your child's awareness of what makes humans different and what is good about that.

Sink your teeth into this learning opportunity to become a better parent . . . and you'll have a real mouthful! And your child's mouthful will be healthier and your child more literate, too!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wonderful World of Dr. Seuss
My son was brought up on Dr. Seuss Books! He is now 15 and they were the only kid's books he wouldn't let me give away. As for the tooth book, the pages are mostly ripped out. As he was teething, and in great pain, I later found his 'beloved' tooth book with almost every page torn in half. You can figure out why. It is a wonderful book. ... Read more

Haven't seen this book since I was a boy myself, but its republication is one of the great events in the publishing world of 1970. Gorey is, of course, well known for his quirky antiquarian drawings and his bizarre sense of black humor, but his work with Peter Neumeyer isn't as familiar as the stories he wrote on his own. Collaboration didn't make Gorey's particular genius any less strange; indeed it sharpened the wit and the eerie conceptualization of these drawings.

Little "Donald" is rather a creepy boy himself, but he's downright appealing next to his mother, who spends the entire book picking a splinter out of poor Donald's leg with a needle and tweezers, and then seeing to the aftermath of his wound with alcohol and a very large pillow. She will remind you of the part Katharine Hepburn played in LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT.

Hooray for Donald, Gorey, Abrams and Neumeyer! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No Surprise!
I have all the titles in the series, and of course, I love this one. My children snuggle up and we have read this one over
and over. A must have for Mr. Putter and Tabby fans. Everyone will love the warmth and consideration from Mr. Putters neighbor and her dog, zeke. We should all care so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Series (So Far)
I've read the Mr. Putter & Tabby books with both of my children. It's a wonderful series for the beginning reader. This title is my favorite of the entire series. Mr. Putter has a cold and remembers what made him feel better when he was a boy. Chicken soup, some hot tea and an adventure book loaned by Mrs. Teaberry's dog, Zeke make this cold worth having. It perfectly captures just how much fun a sick day can be.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great series built on loveable characters
My daughter who is now 8 and I have been reading the Mr Putter and Tabby stories from the very beginning when Mr Putter and Tabby poured the tea. In fact, she has learned to read thanks to this kind hearted old man and his "fine cat." This latest addition as the two of them deal with a common cold is uncommonly good. Cynthia Rylant has managed to convey the lives of two elderly people - Mr Putter and his neighbor, Mrs Teaberry - with dignity, humor and a sense of adventure in everyday living. My daughter loves this story and all the others because of the humorous situations and the likeability of the characters. I love them because as I approach my "Mr Putter years" -- I'm 56 -- I see him as a delightful example of what being an "old man" can be. Likewise I see my daughter learning compassion, acceptance and respect for older people so often missing in children's stories.

I urge any parent -- and especially grandparents -- to add this book and any of the other Mr Putter and Tabby books to their children's (and grandchildren's)reading repetoire.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comforting and Cosy
One day Mr. Putter forgets to put his hat on when he goes out to fetch the newspaper, as he is in such a hurry to read the comics. Soon he has a cold, and his faithful cat Tabby can only comfort him so much. Fortunately, his neighbor, Mrs. Teaberry, sends over soup and tea in thermoses brought by her dog Zeke. One thing is still missing... an adventure book, which Zeke will only bring if he can stay and read it with them. What begins as a miserable day becomes "the best cold Mr. Putter ever caught," thanks to the generosity of all his friends. This beginning reader for first and second graders allows its audience to identify with a character who is old enough to be their grandfather, and amuses them with his animal companions. The illustrations by Arthur Howard are, as usual, bold, expressive, and colorful. ... Read more

I'm Not Feeling Well Today is a fun rebus rhyme about a child who claims to not be feeling well because he doesn't want to go to school. My daughter quickly had the story memorized and loved "reading" the list of things the boy would need to help him feel better.

The story is very cute and the rhyme is fun.Children will love participating in the story and you won't mind reading it again and again. It is a great book to introduce to children who are getting ready to read. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Perpetrating Negative Cultural Socialization of Girls!
This book perpetrates years of negative media images of African American people and women in general. It contributes to the false notion that a Eurocentric physical appearance is an indicatior of African American beauty. The photograph on the front cover of the book is a fine example of this. All of the young women in the photograph have long straightened/chemically altered hair and their skin complexions range from light to medium brown. None of these young sisters are dark skinned nor do they sport natural and/or short hair styles! In addition this book contributes to the socializing of girls into being
self-consumed with beauty. A young woman's self esteem should be based on her character, her talents and her accomplishments NOT on her appearance. They must know they are special because they are respected and valued. Tips on beauty from the "Hollywood stars" and beauty tips on how to prepare for a "date" are shallow issues that do not build self-esteem, strong principals or values. Lets not insult the intelligence of our teen daughters by believing that their world ONLY consits of beauty and dates. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS BOOK! More appropriate books for young African American womens'beauty should be centered around self-love and self-acceptance. Natural beauty books that truly embrace self-love/acceptance and Afrocentricity are "No Lye" by Tulani Kinard and "Lets Talk Hair" by Pamela Ferrell. Start your daughters off with these two books. It is in these kinds of books that the "beauty" issues around self-esteem that plague so many African American women and teens today are discussed. It is also in these books that various photos of African American females of many complexions, and hair textures/lenghts and ages are shown.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Elmo Book
This is my Baby Daughter's absolute favorite book. I bought it when she was five months old, because she had the Chicken Elmo toy that she really liked. She just loves this book. She's eight months old and it's really the only book that captures her full attention. (The Hungry Caterpillar comes in second.) We've tried buying other Elmo books, but she's just not as interested in them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Funny
My daughter (22 months old) loves this book. The main characteris Elmo, and features a couple of the other sesame Street characters. The book has a great rhyming pattern and my daughter loves when Elmo sneezes and as a consequence knocks thimgs down. My daughter loves all the Early Step into Reading books I've purchased. They offer alot of Sesame Street titles which are great. These books are wonderful for the next step in reading (going from picture books to longer stories with a plot).

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book for little ones
This is one of the best books I've found for my daughter. At 21 months this is her absolute favorite book. She won't go anywhere with out "Achoo". She's giggles at every page and can identify all the people inside. We use it to practice colors and shapes. We love to sneeze whenever Elmo does. This is a must have for toddlers. I just placed several more of the Early Step into Reading series in my shopping cart.

This book is extremely funny. Most of the children hate to take baths. This book has beautiful colored pages and the Spanish language is clear, fluent and well used. I recommend this book to be use in the classroom for English language learners or for dual inmersion settings.
