5-0 out of 5 stars I Know from Experience
I have been a huge fan of Lurlene McDaniel's for years. When I was 10 I was diagnosed with a kidney disease, I've had a transplant and I'm back on dialysis now 'cause it failed and I have never known how to put what I was feeling into words, but somehow McDaniel does it over and over again in each of her books. She is the only author that can make me cry. This book is excellent...I was up til 2 a.m. just this morning finishing it 'cause I just couldn't bare to put it down. I recommend you read this book if your looking for excellent stories with good messages.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone intrigued by sad love stories.
I think that this novel is one of Lurlene's Best. After reading all of her books, and being a fan for more than 6 years, I can say that this book is as wonderfully inspiring as the rest, but it's my favorite because it's a little more traumatic. You feel more sorry for Richard because he's loosing his love, than for Jenny becuase she's dying. I've always enjoyed light love stories, and if you also like dramatical twists, I would recomend this book, along with all the other Mcdaniels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book I ever Read
This is one of the best books that I have ever read, i was so into it, I finsihed the first story in less than 3 hours. It also helps with problems , the first story talks about cancer, and one of my loved ones is dealing with cancer, and it made me feel better afer I read it, these are very inspirational stories, and will show you that there is more to life than the little things.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stories!
These stories truly went straight to my heart...every single one of them! Mainly because I could relate to all of them. In the first story, Sarah had leukemia and I once had a very good friend that went through all the same ordeals as Sarah. The second story I think I can relate to also because a couple of months back, I too was a candy striper at my local hospital because I had to get service hours for my church in order to be Confirmed, and just like Megan, I too went to the hospital everyday at first just wanting to get my hours done and go home, but after awhile, some of the patients that you visit with and get to know everyday have a very huge impact on you and your life sort of starts to revolve around them because you're constantly worrying about their health but, there's nothing you can do except listen to them talk everyday and try to cheer them up the best that you can. Then finally in the third story about Anne, I can also relate because just recently my distant cousin, whom I was very close with, passed away on account of HIV and the AIDS virus and I know the struggle she went through everyday because I was with her most days. Her and my friend, with leukemia, were also part of the reason I stuck with my candy striping job at the hospital because, like Megan put it, it gives you a great feeling of joy knowing that somehow you made a difference in someone's life and even though I'm only a sophmore in high school, I am already starting to make plans to someday attend Medical School and become a doctor so that I can keep making a difference in people's lives. So, thank you Lurlene for writing these beautiful and truly heart-warming stories that I would recommend to anyone and everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Emotional Impact, even for an older person.
I just finished reading all three stories in this book, and I must say, Lurlene McDaniel still has the ability to create amazing and emotional stories for her readers. I have been a Lurlene McDaniel fan for many years, and it all began when I read "Six Months To Live". Her stories really bring to life the struggles that so many young people go through. All three of these stories had a major impact on me, but I think the greatest impact was brought on by "Sixteen and Dying". It's hard to explain why, exactly, but it did. At any rate, I think that any fan of Ms. McDaniel's, be they old, new, or never read any of her books before, should read these three stories. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Photos that touch your heart
My wife, Marilyn, did a Best Part of Me project with one of the classrooms she consults with. The children who wrote and the shildren and adults who saw the photos and the writing about them were engaged.

Wendy Ewald is an amazing person who uses a camera as a way to learn.

4-0 out of 5 stars knees & elbows & necks, oh my!
Immediate, poetic & bright this big book brings you up close & personal with children's feet, hands, eyes, backs, hair, elbows in award-winning Wendy Ewald's magical photos.

The poems penned by these 15 youngsters are funny & eloquent, touching & proud. As is usual with children, it's more about what they don't say as much as it is about what they do.

Bound to get kids thinking about what they like about their bodies, might even get them writing little ditties about it too! A must in a classroom or school library!

The poems & black & white photos in THE BEST PART OF ME are drawn from Literacy Through Photography, a program Wendy Ewald originated in the public schools of Durham, North Carolina. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's about something that happens in real life. The BEST!!!
I really liked this book because it shows that in life not everthing can go your way. This story can happen in real life. It's the best story I have read because it's about two friends that need the same heart. I thought the book was sad, but these things happen in real life. That's what life is about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous
Another addition to the story of friends Lacey, Chelsea, Amanda, Jillian and Katie, its a must-read. Chelsea is on the beeper for a heart transplant, and staying with Katie's family. Katie's success with a heart transplant gives Chelsea hope, but after living with a heart disease her entire life, Chelsea is getting sicker each day. At a class for hopeful tranplant receipiants, Chelsea meets Jillian, a sassy, up-beat red-head with a Texan twang and a rich father. Jillian is not only in need of a heart, but a 'pair of lungs.' Jillian and Chelsea can relate, and become instant friends. But one night both girls' beepers go... but there's only one heart, and two lungs. Do the doctors save three people, or one?

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Lurlene's greatest!
By reading some of the other reviews for this book, I realize that many of them are negative. They imediatly turn you off from the book. I sopose there are some people who do not like them, but please read the book for yourself and then decide. Do not let the negative reviews influence you. The books are inspiring, touching, and simply amazing.
This praticular book is about two friends fighting for their lives because of failing hearts. When both are called into the hospital, only one will be choosen to recieve the heart that is being donated. Booth friends want the heart to be given to eachother, but it will only be given to one, and the other will die.
I have read almost all her other books, and I have never gotten bored, or thought the plot was the same, or the book was predictable. Please try her books before you decide you don't like them, and don't let negative reviews influence you're desision. You'll find her books are truly amazing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the Best
I didnt really like this book. Its basically about these two girls that need a heart transplant. When one heart finally does come up, they are both good canidates for it. But since the one girl gets it, the other one dies.

Then there is another problem about this other girl who is torn between her boyfriend and the new guy at school.

(How facinating)

1-0 out of 5 stars Save a tree
I had the misfortune to read this book, and it is incredibly sappy. Bascially, two girls need the same organ, or multiple organs, and they meet and become best friends. Then ONE organ comes up, and it would work for both of them, and the one that doesn't get it dies the same night. And the cute guy in the background is a nessecity. This book could very easily be the worst I've read, with the possible exception of some Baby Sitter's club stories, and if a book has ever deserved no stars, this one is it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A parent and grandparent's opinion
A great book for teaching the benefits of good eating habits.
Illustrations are colorful and interesting - just what the little ones look for in a book. My grandson always looks for this book in my house.

This is, I believe a must for all parents of young children (together with the children) as it will remind them of the importance of eating the proper foods.

Grammar schools should also use this in their health classes.

More books like this PLEASE....... Maybe this is the way to a slimmer youth.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Race Against Junk Food
Excellent, The Race Against Junk Food is a wonderful way to teach kids, parents and grandparents (like me) about healthy eating habits. My 5 year old grand girl loves this book. It's colorful characters and great story keep her interested from start to finish. She even tells other people about the book, and wants all her friends and family to order a copy right away. I highly recommend this book and encourage everyone to read this colorful guide toward good nutrition.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun way to talk about healthy eating.
I have a 2 year old and a 5 year old and it has been a bedtime favorite for a couple of months. The story is fun and the characters are cool and colorful. Since the characters are fruits and vegetables, the book furnishes you with a fun way to talk about healthy eating.

This book hadn't been published when my daughter got her glasses as a pre-schooler. Wish it had been. A great daddy-daughter story especially when her father tenderly explains that while her glasses do make her different, she's also different because of her charm, her wit, and her curiosity. 5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring tale of a courageous girl. Must read!
Finally, the mysterious JWC revealed! I always wondered who she was,so I was thrilled to get my hands on this book. It was marvelous that Jenny wanted to make a difference in other sick kids' lives. This book also showed how much friendship and love can help people, sick or well. The ending was poignant. However, I wonder what happened to Kimbra.Did she live or die? Despite this little mystery,I still loved this book. Everyone, young and old, should read it. It proves that teens can make great differences in the world. A little warning:don't read Please Don't Die first,or else it'll spoil the ending. Now,buy it from Amazon.com and enjoy!

Book Description

Sixteen-year-old Lucy Szabo is Undead -- at least according to her own theories about vampirism. Lucy believes that the first vampires -- with their pale skin, long teeth, and uncontrollable thirst -- were dying diabetics. And she should know. She's a diabetic herself.

When Lucy becomes involved with Draco -- a self-proclaimed "real" vampire she meets in the Transylvania Internet chat room -- her world begins crashing down around her. Caught up in late-night parties and Goth culture, she begins to lose control of her grades, relationships, and health. Lucy realizes she needs to make some important choices, and fast. But it may already be too late. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweetbook
Lucy Szabo can barely remember a time when she wasn't dependent on her insulin shots. Diagnosed with diabetes at the age of six, Lucy has grown up feeling like outsider. She seperates herself from her peers (deeming herself a freak) and she even visualizes herself as a vampire of sorts.

First, let me admit that I did not find Lucy to be a likeable character. She is very self-centered and acts as if she is the only person with medical problems. In fact, there is even another girl with diabetes in the book and all Lucy does is make fun of her and scoff at her chipper attitude. Lucy is negative, she contradicts herself, she believes herself to be better than everybody else.
And yet, while she isn't a likeable character, I find Lucy to be a very believable one. Hautman does an excellent job allowing the reader to see the inner workings of Lucy's mind and allowing for the reader to witness Lucy as she struggles to come to terms with her disease.

"Sweetblood" is a great insight to diabetes, with a modern twist including Goth subculture. Granted, readers expecting your cookie cutter vampire novel might be a little bit disappointed. However I find "Sweetblood" to be a Funny, eye-opening, and inspiring read that should not be missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book about a girl in the goth/vampire subculture
Goths. Vampires. Diabetics. You will find all of that and more in Pete Hautman's book Sweetblood. The book calls itself a "vampire novel," but really what it's about is a diabetic girl, Lucy, who's theory that slowly dying diabetics in the Middle Ages were the original vampires leads her to take an interest in people who call themselves vampires and the vampire/goth subculture. The book is well written, and although some teenagers may not be able to appreciate it, I certainly did.
Lucy is sixteen, and has been diabetic since she was six years old. Her theory is that before the discovery of insulin, diabetics must have been seen as demons or as possessed in some way. She takes an interest in vampires and goes to vampire websites and the Transylvania chat under the alias Sweetblood, where she talks with others who share her interest and who consider themselves vampires. However, when the story begins, around the start of the school year, her grades have been deteriorating. When she writes a paper (that was supposed to be about what she wanted to do as an adult) on her theory of diabetics being vampires and goes into great detail comparing vampire legends and the symptoms of untreated diabetes, her concerned teacher calls a meeting with the school councilor (who she has already been to see multiple times) and Lucy's parents. The result: Lucy's computer is taken away from her. Apparently her parents think it dangerous for her to be on vampire websites all the time. Bored and angry, Lucy must find other things to do.
The cute, goth new guy in school has taken an interest in Lucy. One night, when she is supposed to be grounded, Lucy meets him for coffee. While at the coffeehouse, Lucy is introduced to an older member of the goth scene who knows the guy she's with. As she hangs out at the coffeehouse more, she gains an invitation to the party of one Wayne, who she has never met before. When Wayne turns out to be Draco, a member of the Transylvania chat who has been tracking Lucy, things start to get strange.
One of the best things about this book is that it gets the facts straight. A lot of times, people go on what they assume the goth subculture is. Pete Hautman has gotten his facts straight, making references to goth bands like The Sisters of Mercy and Concrete Blonde, as well as describing the various styles of goth found at Wayne's party.
Sweetblood is well written and very hard to put down. The end of every chapter leaves you wanting more, and there is never a dull moment; even the moments dull for the main character are made up for with good descriptions. As one who was once very in to vampire chats and the goth subculture, I could fully appreciate Pete Hautman's Sweetblood.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweetblood Review
The book I read is a vampire novel named SweetBlood by author Pete Hautman. I liked this book a lot. The book had a very good plot. At the end of each chapter, the author would always leave you hanging. The book is about a girl who has an interest in vampires. She is a teen trying to fit in. All the real trouble starts when she loses something. Although I can't say what it is, it is something we could all do without. She loses it because of bad grades in school. This leads to some things you wouldn't expect. Because she has diabetes she ends up having many insulin reactions. All of this builds up to a superb finale. I recommend this book to anybody except people who do not like vampires. So if you like vampire novels, this is the book for you. Four out of five stars because of some dull parts in the book such as a lot of boring detail of her going to a café or when she is walking to the mall. The book has strong of word choice, but sometimes the description is just TOO MUCH!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time reading this book.....
This is a book about a girl that is diabetic and how she lives her life. She does think she is a vampire and she talks to people that think they are vampires. In the begging of the book she is a girl that is totally into a gothic way. Then in the end she changes into a totally different girl that you would not think of her doing. The thing I like about this book is how she talks about her diabetes and how she is living in school with the diabetes. I also like how she changes into a whole different person and how her personality changes. I really hated a lot of things in this book. The most things I hated were when she was talking on a chat room on the web, and she was talking to people that thought they were vampires and she called them stupid. I also hate when she acts like a vampire.
This book is not like any books that I have read before.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Glad I Happened to Pick This Up...
I could not put this book down--and I'm 30 years old!:D This is such an amazingly accurate portrayal of the everyday life of a teenaged girl. It captures Lucy's voice and mind so beautifully, I feel she is someone I've known. And each of the other characters is someone you could imagine from your own high school, not the usual sitcom caricatures. The concept is very original and utterly believable. And all of the subtle references and subplots are skillfully woven together by the end to give the whole thing a wonderful cohesion and sense of "relevance". The subtle, wry humor throughout is delightful. A beautiful portrait of a lovely young girl struggling to come to terms with her lot in life and find out what she truly values. Go. Read.:) ... The white furred cat-like Fuzzheads creatively face the dilemma of living in close proximity to humans. When the Wise Ones and Little Yau need to search the nearby human town for the rare thumbfoot plant, they don human clothes to disguise themselves.

The story is complemented by beautifully bright full-color illustrations. The smaller black and white sketches beside the text add details such as how Trup was poisoned and what Trau does to care for Trup while the others search for the thumbfoot leaf. Some of the illustrations are quite comical. Sure to generate giggles is the two-page spread of Little Yau attempting to run on two feet like a human, then giving up the pretense in favor of speed. Similarly delightful is the "Human Phrase Book" the Fuzzheads have studied in order to have (limited) conversations with humans. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars About what it's like to live with alopecia
The Girl With No Hair by Elizabeth Murphy-Melas is a flat-spined children's picture book about the common condition of alopecia areata, an autoimmune skin disease in which the body's own defenses attack the hair follicles and cause hair loss. People with alopecia are often healthy in every other respect, but children with the disease are often struck with an emotional burden in a phase of life when developing self-esteem is crucial. Bright color pictures by Alex Hernadix enhance the straightforward, understanding text which teaches young readers about what it's like to live with alopecia, and the joy of having a rewarding life with or without hair. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
"Until Angels Close My Eyes" is a great book! Lurlene McDaniels, has really captured thatlove and emotion of Leah and Ethan. This novel mad me feel happy and sad! The main charectar, Leah, has been through so much, and everything seems to be going wrong in her life. Her father ran off and left her mother and her alone. Her mother has married a lot of men. Leah has gone through cancer. Her mother's frequent husband, was diagnosed with cancer, again. She met an Amish boy, that she fell in love with. She went through little Rebekah's death. I felt sorry for her. Ethan is the Amish boy she fell in love with while she was in the hospital for chemo therapy. He his sweet. I liked him the best. He was old-fashion, and he seemed to respect Leah very much. He was trying to find his brother, Eli. This book is very good. Everyone who is anyone should read this book. I recomend this book to anyone who is willing to read it.

Thank-you!

4-0 out of 5 stars WIll Their Love Last?
The book, Until Angels Close My Eyes by Lurlene McDaniel is a great book. Leah (main character) thinks her battle with cancer is over, but the disease that haunts her past has struck someone she loves. Leah finds comfort in a visit to Amish country to see Ethan. Ethan (boyfriend) is changing, his taste in what community he wants to live in. Can their love stay together through all these changes??

On a rating, one through five, five being the best, I would rate this book a four. It was a great book, but it could have had a little more development in the beginning it was kind of slow. There could have been not so much background information. Once it started to pick-up, I couldn't put it down. The author had a great story line. It was realistic, easy to fallow, and I could put myself in Leah's position. You could tell she put a lot of effort in her book. I thought the description of the cancer was very in-depth. She used all the terms in which the doctors would really use. Not just in this book, but also in all of her books I have read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Until Angels Close His Eyes...
Until Angels close my eyes is one of the most emotional stories, but a good one. Even though I have only read this book out of the series, I agree that this is a very beautifully written book and Lurlene McDaniel did a wonderful job of explaining the details and understanding the issue of Cancer. Leah was good influence for people to read about and was not as gloomy as she should have been. I still enjoyed this book very much and I think if you enjoy books like this it will be enjoying for you too.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a Great read
"Until Angels Close My Eyes" was one of the most emotional books I have read. It is the 3rd book in a 3 book series. In this final book Lurlene McDaniel sets the main character,Leah, on a new journey. Leah is having trouble with her loving 5th step dad, Neil, because his cancer is coming back. And at the same time Leah's Amish boyfriend is living with her family. Leah has so much going on that she is confused. Her mother is getting up-set about Neil's cancer. Leah is having boyfriend troubles because he wants to be "English." Lurlene McDaniel writes of cancer to others because her son had cancer. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading drama and heart warming, sad stories. With all the demands McDaniel is getting, I hope she writes another one and tells what happens to Leah. I know I'll read it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't Let This Be...
Okay; I read all the Angel books...and I was quite shocked in the end. I was hoping that there would be another series because I wanted Ethan and Leah to be together, even though the English and Amish don't mix. Since Eli has been brought to the third edition, I wanted to know more about him...hoping that he would reunite with his family because thier Oma is sick. I just was hoping that Lurlene McDaniel would write another series for the Angel Trilogy... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy and fun for girls
I am a mother of two girls. My youngest saw this book and fell in love with it. I bought it and tried several of the braids on the girls - pirate matey, spider girl, and pippi longstocking. The instructions and photos were very clear, and the braids were quite simple to do. The result was fantastic. Now my girls are braiding their friends' hair at school. This is a very fun book, and the pictures and paper and binding are all beautifully done. Much better than other braiding books I've seen.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's not practical at all, more of a cartoon view of hair
I returned it. There is some visual humor in it, but you can pretty much forget about doing any of the braids enclosed. It is not a practical look at braiding for a young woman's lifestyle.

It may however, have a use in future Star Wars films. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and informative
My daughter and I love this book. At 5 years old, she easily understood what this book was trying to tell her. She's 8 now and we still read it. We even use some of the terminology to remind each other to stay healthy. She'll say "Mama, you're being a 'meal skipper'". It is NOT a scary book and it is a fun way to talk about germs with your kids.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book will make your little ones paranoid.
This book repeatedly emphasizes that germs are mean and that they are everywhere and that their sole purpose is to GET YOU. Very scary, actually. It puts them in your body, in your food, in the air and the miminally addressed topic of keeping yourself clean does not banish them. The next page just puts them all back somewhere else. It is not clear at all that handwashing, not letting other people sneeze on you, washing the floor, not leaving food overnight on the counter are effective ways to keep healthier. The emphasis is on a ton of very cute cartoony germs in multitudes. The health aspects are implied only--and poorly at that. Behaviors like nose-picking are RIDICULED. Not good for kids up to about age 10, especially if you're trying to teach health and cleanliness issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is wonderfully funny in its rhymes and pictures.
This book not only presents a serious topic in a very humorous and creative fashion, it contains some of the absolutely best germ cartoons I have ever seen. My first grader really enjoys it and I can't stop showing it off at work. I am an Infection Control RN specialist and find that it is perfect to communicate to healthcare workers the need to always wash their hands! I am getting copies for the hospital where I work. It is a super book! ... Read more
