Kids who go to the doctor for a routine checkup shouldn't worry toomuch. Unless they accidentally throw a paper airplane ("zwish!") into thedoctor's eye. Or forget to wear underwear. ("Oops!") Or kick the doctor in thechin when she's testing knee reflexes with a little rubber hammer. ("Clack!")The beloved Froggy is his usual out-of-control self in Dr. Mugwort's office, andpreschoolers pondering an impending doctor visit will be relieved to know itwon't be too bad, might be fun, and could even involve a gold star or alollipop. Jonathan London and illustrator Frank Remkiewicz disarm their youngreaders with giggles in books from Froggy Learns to Swim to Froggy Goes to School. Froggy'ssilly sound effects and slapstick antics guarantee a lively read-aloud. 3-0 out of 5 stars Hide it!
This book was a gift to our daughter (nearly three). She loved the Froggy Goes to Bed book and I defended Froggy's misbehavior because that book kept her attention and was a favorite. However, Froggy Goes to the Doctor went beyond our line. Our daughter has never feared the doctor. After her two year check up she had to have blood drawn. She didn't flinch, and afterward she said she had "fun". I am very cautious that she does not "learn" to be afraid of doctors. I am less concerned about Froggy's misbehavior as I am about his fear of getting a shot. We hid the book, out of sight out of mind...

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Like Froggy Books, This is One of the Better Ones
I feel a little sheepish giving this 5 stars. Frankly, I don't much care for the Froggy series. Here's the truth, though - it doesn't matter what I think. My 5-year-old loves all the Froggy books, and they serve as great motivators for him to continue learning to read.

I'd recommend this book over most of the other Froggy books. Froggy's misbehavior is (thankfully) not a major topic here, and the book conveys a useful lesson about doctors. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
This froggy books is as good as the rest of the froggy books. My 22 month old loves the froggy books. They are her favorite books to read. Froggy goes to the doctor is great for kids. I really like Froggy! This froggy book is great, it teaches the kids that froggy doesn't like going to the doctor just like them! Froggy is great for teaching kids things!! My 22 month old loved this book. She goes to the bookcase and always brings me a froggy book when she wakes up in the morning! This a must have!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another winner for Rosemary Wells!
"Felix Feels Better" tells the story of a little guinea pig's first visit to the doctor with sensitivity and understanding. The text is simple and straightforward, making it easy for a young listener to relate to the plight of the little piggie who eats too many treats before bedtime, then wakes up feeling "not very perky." Rosemary Wells' pictures are a perfect accompaniment to the text. The smallest child will see himself and his fears in going to the doctor for the first time eased by the gentle story of Felix and Dr. Duck, as Felix literally bounces back by the end of the book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Greatest Love Story
I think this story was brilliant.I mean the details as if she were there.Like she had that kind of love and tragedy in her life like that.I mean in all the books I have read and will read that will be the best.It touched my heart and after I have read it I read it over and over again to see if it happened.I can't believe a real love like that can exist when you are so young.I will never forget this book.I will never forget how Morgan asked her to stay the night or his judgements got the best of him and how brave Anne was to go through all that pain and how lucky to have someone that understands and loves her so like her father and Morgan.I mean i just got this book because a friend was reading this book but it is so intense.Lurlene McDaniel is one heck of a writer!!You need to read this book ! ! !! !!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!!!!! !!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The one that got me hooked...
When I was ten, I read this book. Now I'm twenty-one and I haven't missed a Lurlene McDaniel novel since... not to mention the fact that I've scoured the Internet for every out-of-print book she's ever written.

This novel hooked me immediately with its touching story and ability to convey the truth about what life is like for some unfortunate individuals. Too many times in our sugar-coated society, teens are unaware of the horrors that exist in life. McDaniel has the innate ability to create the awareness that is so desperately needed by teens while still entertaining the reader as well as not scaring him or her completely.

Emotions run rampant in everyone of McDaniel's novels; but this one is a good starting point because it's incredibly gentle in its realities. Many adolescents may not comprehend the fact that 16-year-olds get AIDS; but this novel introduces those facts and leaves the readers hungry for more. And, as we all know, awareness is the best preventative action of all.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Lurlene's bestg but they are all great
When Anne Wingate was 10 she was givin a blood transfusion to save her life when her and her mom were in an accident. Anne survived but now at 16 she hasn't been feeling well. She goes into the hospital for tests and while there she finds out that the blood transfusion she had to save her life, was now to take it away because the blood she recieved was tainted. It has made her HIV positive. When Anne Recieves her One Last Wish she chooses to go to the Broken Arrow Ranch. You'll have to read the book to find out what happens when she meets Morgan. Happy Reading!!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Lurlene's best
As the title says, this has to be one of her best. She gives Anne, a young girl at the age of 16, a great personality. Anne is diagnosed with HVI, which was transferred to her through blood that was ment to save her life when she was 10. As her 'One Last Wish' she goes to a ranch out in Colorado where she meets Marti, a young mislead girl who becomes her friend, and Morgan, a wild cowboy that keeps a mysterious secret. She soon becomes very close with them, especially Morgan, but she can't forget her diagnose. How long will Anne have to live?

5-0 out of 5 stars Sixteen and Dying
Anne Wingate is sixteen and dying. She is HIV positive. But she gets the AIDS virus. Anne loves Emily Dicksion. She got a blood transfusion, seven years ago, to save her life, in December 1984. Blood screening was not required, until Janraury 1985. The blood happened to be was tainted. Then Anne became HIV positive, and got AIDS. Then she a letter and a check from the One Last Wish Foundation. She uses the money to go out west, to a ranch, where she falls for boy who lives there, Morgan, who also has a past. When she leaves all-of-suddenly, he follows her home. Then he helps takes care of her until she dies. She dies right after Christmas. Her present was a first-edition book of Emily Dickson. This is a wonderful book, that I had to rebuy many times, because the pages had my tears all over them. ... Read more

It's tough when you think you have the perfect idea for your science project--and it backfires like a green-smoke-producing chemistry accident.Shrink--so named because his mother is a psychologist and his dad is a neurosurgeon--figures that performing a handwriting analysis on his middle-school science teacher as a classic example of a criminal mind would be perfectly well received. Alas, he ends up in the principal's office... without a project. When he meets the corpulent Pig, Angelo Pighetti, he seizes the opportunity to conduct a human weight-loss experiment, but soon discovers that using a classmate as a guinea pig is more complicated than he anticipated.

"You see these guys?" I asked, pointing at the evil foods.
"You mean those little candy-bar men?" he asked.
"Right. You know who they are?"
Pig was quiet for a moment, studying them. His face was blank.
"No," he said, slowly shaking his head. "But I think I like them."

In this fast-paced, funny novel, Pamela Todd develops a real, complex friendship between Pig and Shrink--one that evolves despite the odd scientist-lab rat dynamic, and amidst a sea of schoolyard fat jokes. Shrink thinks that while he's proving his scientific prowess, he's also helping Pig become a better person. But the truth is, Shrink--born of ambitious, controlled parents--has a lot to learn from the bon vivant Angelo Pighetti and his "noisy, messy, out of control" life at his family's pizzeria. The author serves up generous helpings of Chinese zodiac lore, fortune-cookie wisdom ("Wise men are not always learned. Learned men are not always wise."), and laugh-out-loud witty banter in this wise, compassionate middle-grade novel that will stick to your ribs. (Ages 8 to 12) --Karin Snelson ... Read more

I gave this book to my six year old daughter as a Christmas gift. We read it together as a bedtime story and her first reaction was : "I want you to read it again right now!". In fact, she would have liked me to read it several more times that night. It is a beautifully illustrated, lovingly written story about a special dog who helps sick children get well. It touched each of us emotionally without being falsely sentimental. We both found it very interesting that it is based on true events. I certainly recommend it for children from 3 to 8 and feel older children would also find the story interesting. It is a wonderful book to give as a gift. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Acquitance with Ann Rinaldi
This book was my first Ann Rinaldi book. I was stunned by it. It was just absolutly wonderful- filled with everything and just about anything you could want, (at least what I wanted). It was my favorite book. If you're a great historical fiction lover and/or Ann Rinaldi story lover this would be an extrememly nice addition for your reading buds.
The book's main character (whom you've probably already found out) is fourteen year old Emily Pigbrush, who experiences through many tragic events. First her widow mother dies and she decides to live with her best friend, Annie Surratts. But on the night before she moves out the greatest of all misfortunes happen - President Lincoln gets shot and suspicion falls on the Surratts. Forced to go and live with Uncle Valentine, Emily finds out more as to why her mother hated her brother so much. As to the rest, you really should find out yourself. In the end the story leaves you a strange feeling. One that signals the end but it leaves you kind of sad. Over all it's a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Rinaldi's Best
I love all of Ann Rinaldi's books, but this is surely one of my favorite. It has a very interesting plot that moves along at a good pace, and many characters that bring a lot to the story. The main character, Emily, sees things in an interesting and informative perspective, as many of Rinaldi's narrators do. Due to her circumstances, she is living with her Uncle Valentine and learning for herself what all his medical practice consists of. She is witnessing what happened to Washington upon Lincoln's assasination, and she conveys this all to the reader very well. Rinaldi works in a love story, making Emily's interest one of the main characters, as she normally does, without taking away the true meaning and grit of the story, as many other authors do. The book also has a lot of action and a lot of facts. Though I don't normally read historical fiction, Ann Rinaldi writes so well that she has become my favorite author. I would recommend this along with all of her other books to anyone who asked.

4-0 out of 5 stars anouther review another dollar
This book was good. I have been reading it for a few days and I have not been able to put it down. It is a bit long though. It is about a girl named Emily whose mother is very sick. Well she finally dies and so the girl goes to live with her uncle eventually where she learns a horrible secret about the man who has always been there for her and has given her a home. Finally, Emily must make a decision that will have a very big impact on her life

5-0 out of 5 stars An awesome right out crunk mystery book
This book was an awesome book by Ann Rinaldi. This story takes place during the time right after Lincoln was assinated. A girl named Emily has a mother who is deadly ill. Her mother knew that she was about to die and she told Emily that she needed to live wih someone. Emily wants to live wiht her aunt in Philidelphia, but her om wants her to live with her good friend next door. Emily's uncle Valintine comes into town to see Emily's mother. Valintine tries to tell Emily that she needs to come live with him. emily's mother doesn't want Emily to go live with him. Emily decides to go visit her uncle. While she is there she meets an old crazy black lady that lives upstairs. She tells Emily that her uncle has a big secert and that Emily needs to help get the old lady out. Emily is told that the big seceret is in her uncle's shed where NO ONE is allowed. To find out the secert you have to read this awesome book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars one of Rinaldi's greatest
This is a stellar book. It will keep you on edge in typical Rinaldi fashion, and it will explore the ethics of gravestealing and what not. It wouldn't be a Rinaldi without a complex romance either. It is a great read for Rinaldi fans and if you aren't one it will turn you into one. ... Read more

Book Description

When too little is known and too much is feared, we turn to books. In the spirit of providing much-needed solace comes HENRY & THE WHITE WOLF, an illustrated storybook-and poignant allegory-to help kids who are sick, or kids with friends who are sick, or kids whose parents or siblines or teachers are sick.

What makes the simple, straightforward story especially comforting and so close to a child's point of view is that it is written and illustrated by a teenaged brother and sister who not only draw on their own feelings of being in the hospital, but the experience of offering support to close friends with serious illnesses. It is the same fresh thinking that inspired the authors to package with the book a soft, round stone for every child to hold-just like the talismanic stone in the story that Henry, the little sick hedgehog, must hold onto while undergoing the debilitating treatment offered up by the White Wolf, a figure feared by all the hedgehogs. No matter how bad it gets, Henry clutches his stone for dear life-literally-and it gives him the dignity and courage he needs to get better. ... Read more

This story provides a way for children and parents alike to put in simple terms the complex feelings which arise with chronic illnesses and disorders. For children too young to discuss their feelings, this book voices the fears they cannot express with words. I recommend this book to all children who must face illness, whether it be chronic or temporary.

I found this novel very emotional and deep. It has a strong meaning and it deals with everyday life. The book is unforgettable and it keeps your attention until the very last page.
The author uses good techniques. The book is full of interesting dialog and is written from both Sam's and Julie's point of view. There was a very interesting plot and set of events. The sensory language used by the author made you feel like you were part of the book and there fighting the cancer. The moral was a very important message and it creates an understanding that most people don't know because they don't have this issue in their life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Time for Dancing
Wow, what can I say, this was one of the greatest books that I've ever read. It really touched me, because I know how it feels to feel like you and your best friend are drifting apart. I couldn't help crying at the end, even though I was in the middle of a class I was taking. You can really relate to this book, and I love the format it was written in. Not to mention the fact that it is written so that a young adult ages 12-19 could understand it. Throughout the whole situation, Jules getting cancer, Sam having to watch her slowly suffer, not knowing what to do. I can't even imagine the pain they had to feel. I would truly suggest that you read this book, I promise that it will make you think.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome novel!!!
Desperate to read a sad and interesting friendship novel this month? Well, A Time for Dancing by Davida Wills Hurwin, must be the right book for you! The two main characters, Samantha and Juliana, are best friends and one day Juliana is diagnosed with lymphoma, which is a type of cancer. As Juliana's life becomes a total disaster, her friends and boyfriend also starts to drift apart. This emotional and touching story will grasp the reader's attention from the very first page and never let go until the whole story is carved into our memory forever. I will definitely recommend this book to everyone and I also give this novel a rating of 5/5.

One reason why this is a great novel is the author's effective use of words. The author's fabulous descriptions had led me to tears especially near the ending when Samantha says goodbye to Juliana who was lying in the hospital bed, lifeless. Davida Wills Hurwin allows the reader to picture the character's situation really well. To understand how effective her words are, then you must read this novel.

Another thing that is done well in this book is the climax held within this novel. The climax occurs during the time when Juliana's whole life changes dramatically. She goes through depression, everything is falling apart, and most important of all, she could not dance the way she use to. This is a good place for the climax because Juliana's whole life was change the minute the doctor told her she was diagnosed with cancer.

Numerous readers find this book, A Time for Dancing, hard to put down. Losing hope, going through the battle of cancer, friendship, and death, this novel will change your opinions about this world. So what are you waiting for? Hurry and go to your nearest library or bookstore to read this touching novel!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
I really liked this book.It may take a while for some to get into but by the end of the book it is hard to put down. Throughout the book one can feel the ups and the downs that Sam and Julie's relationship faces along with the emotions that both seem to be experiencing. The book also helps one realize the importance of friends. I would recommend this to anyone that knows what it is like to have a best friend that you would give anything for.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book
I thought the book was great.I was crying 4 the whole ending ,but it is pretty hard to make me cry during a book and i think people who read this book would also like the author Lurlene McDaniel because she writes books like this. The book really makes you see a different perspective that authors dont usually show because they really dont know how sum1 would feel as a 17 year old who has terminal cancer. ... But Pox just doesn't understand why he should want to make a person miserable. Poor Pox is stuck at the bottom of his class. Luckily, Pox is smarter than his friends and teachers believe, and when he's sent to infect an innocent little girl named Myrtle, he makes some new friends and finds himself a much more suitable, healthy home. Book Description

In 1923, there were no doctors or hospitals in the isolated mountains of Appalachia. Then Mary Breckinridge came. Trained as a nurse, she made the Appalachians her life's work-fording icy streams and climbing untracked mountains to bring medical help to those in need. These three stories, told in simple, luminous prose, bring to life the birth of the Frontier Nursing Service, which still operates in Kentucky. Mary On Horseback shows yet another side of Rosemary Wells-one of today's most versatile authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthy of Praise
MARY ON HORSEBACK by Rosemary Wells is a beautifully written account of how Mary Breckinridge devoted her life to helping people of rural Appalachia during the 1920's and 30's. In an area where there were no hospitals or doctors, Mary established a nursing service and saved the lives of many people. The story of her devotion and unselfishness is unique and worthy of praise, as is the author's style of writing. Wells does an outstanding job of capturing the dialect, emotions and soul of the mountain people of Kentucky. Black and white illustrations by Peter McCarty add to the beauty and authenticity of the book. People of all ages will enjoy this book. Younger children would love having it read to them. Middle school students can learn valuable lessons from reading it themselves, and it's complex enough to hold the attention of adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Known Hero An Inspiration For All
Mary Breckinridge (20th century nurse, leader, & visionary) set the standard for rural healthcare. Rosemary Wells' book takes 3 stories from the exciting life & times of a great American woman and brings them to children. This book is for all ages-young & old. I did a college-level biography on Ms. Breckinridge as I found her life and life's work so interesting (her autobiography is excellent & available through Amazon) This would be an excellent classroom reader grades 3-5 and a great read for anyone interested in history, great women, and Americans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspriational Story of Triumph Over Tragedy
I thought that this book was an incredible testament of the human spirit! The title character completed her dream of caring for the poor people of the Kentucky mountains. This was done after Mary Breckinridge herself had undergone enormous personal tragedy. As an elementary school teacher, I plan to use this book as an example of the great things a person can do inspite of one's own circumstances.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty interesting, Ok
This book was OK. it was pretty interesting, but I only read it because it was an MSBA nominee. The stories were pretty touching, but not a lot so. So, I give it 3 stars for a pretty good book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bequtifully crafted vignettes of a quiet heroine.
I was lucky to visit the Frontier Nursing Service and prepare oral histories of some of the people whose lives were touched by Mary Breckinridge and others heroines of the FNS. Wells captures the ridges and hollers and the communities of this side of Kentucky in simple, moving vignettes. ... Read more

With a stomachache in her head and a headache in her throat, not to mention a sore toe, Emily is definitely due for a sick day. Her work-at-home dad takes the day off to find her stuffed animals, put her hair in ponytails, search for the thermometer, and serve her broth with a plastic giraffe in it. Somehow, this ends up being a pretty fun day for Emily and her father, in spite of her having to "swallow up" and Father having to clean up. By the next day Emily is feeling well again--unfortunately, her faithful caregiver seems to have caught the bug now!

Parents and kids everywhere will recognize themselves in this classic from two renowned creators of children's books, Patricia MacLachlan (Sarah, Plain and Tall, a Newbery Medal winner) and Jane Dyer (Oh My Baby, Little One, by Kathi Appelt). Originally published in 1979, this reissue includes freshly updated watercolors from Dyer (the thermometer, when finally located, is digital). Warm, funny, and reassuring, The Sick Day is good for what ails you. It's sure to be a favorite once again with readers with or without tummy- and toe-aches. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fun learning and easy reading for children and parents!
I thought that, "The Pet Vet", was put together very well. The words are clear and concise for children. This makes it easier for parents to teach their children to read and understand. The pictures that accompany the reading material are adorable...the little girl on the cover is a cutie- patooty! Maybe you can use some of these children over again, so our children have regular characters to relate to throughout their learning journey.

Let Him Live is a story about a young girl of 16 named Megan who volunteers, well really her father volunteers her, to work at a hospital over the summer as a summer job. While she's there she meets a patient who is waiting for a liver transplant named Donovan. Her father is a specialist in transplants, so she learns a lot about them and learns that if Donovan doesn't have a transplant soon, he will die. Still, she befriends Donovan and learns to trust friendships again. It is a sad, heart-breaking story, but you're sure to love it. I'd highly recommend it.
