This collection of quotes from Pope John Paul II is a testimonial to his love and respect for the children of the world. Each page offers a stirring, inspirational message that speaks to important Catholic themes in childhood, such as "Family," "School," "Prayer," "Suffering," "Peace," and "My First Communion." Alongside each quote there is an exquisite color photograph of a child or group of children that embodies the theme.

Under the opening heading "Greeting," Pope John Paul offered these words in an address to a crowd of 10,000 children at Vatican City: "The Pope wishes well to everyone, but he has a preference for the youngest, because they had a special place in the heart of Christ, who wished to remain with the children and to talk with the young. He addressed his call to the young especially, and John, the youngest apostle, was his favorite." What child would not feel honored and captivated by such a respectful invitation? This is an excellent gift book for Catholic children, who will certainly beam with pride, prayer, and purpose upon reading this loving tribute. --Gail Hudson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Message of Hope and Peace for Our Youth
This book is one of hope and inspiration for all children of the world. It consists of passages taken directly from speeches given by Pope John Paul the II to children and youth groups around the world. The book is geared toward elementary school children of the Catholic faith, but the words will speak to any heart. Each page has a heading, such as "Peace," "Love," "Family," "Faith," and an excerpt from one of the Pope's speeches. There is also an accompanying photo of young children (often depicted with the Pope himself or in the midst of typical religious activities). This is a book that is meant to be read aloud to your child and shared together, as you talk about the meaning of the words within. I find "For the Children" to be especially apt today, in light of the unfortunate tragedies that have befallen our nation and world. One of my favorite passages states: "I say to you, with all the love I have for you,...do not listen to voices which speak the language of hatred, revenge, retaliation....Love life, respect life in yourself and others...do not think that courage and strength are proved by killing and destruction...true courage lies in working for peace." The book also talks about the unconditional love that God has for everyone, about hope for the future, and about praying for peace and harmony in our world. Pope John Paul II is a very wise man, one of the biggest peacemakers of our time. I have a lot of respect for him as a person.I would encourage any parent to buy this book to share with their family and share the message of love and peace found therein.

5-0 out of 5 stars Words of wisdom for our younger ones
This book has excerts of Pope John Paul II's speeches which have been directed to Catholic children. These words of our Pope, however, have significance even to those over the age of 10. I highly recommend this book for First Communicants and for all other Catholic children, because had I had this book when I was younger, I would probably not have fallen into as many traps as I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book!
As a second grade religion teacher, this book is one of the most inspiring gifts you can give to your child! It is an ideal gift for a First Comminion, or to children preparing for First Communion next year. It's also a great gift for anyone working with chilren preparing for the sacraments. While first and second graders will need some help with the bigger words, this is a book to be read and shared with your child. The Pope's words speak volumes for both children and adults. I also purchased a copy for the pastor at my church, who used portions of the book in his homily at my parish's First Communion Mass. My favorite section is the Pope's recollection of his own Holy Communion day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beatiful, inspiring
This is a beautiful book. It contains photographs of children from all over the world with the Pope along with the text from his writings and speeches about children, including his letters to children. Very thoughtfully put together, easy to read. It makes a wonderful gift for children as well as adults who work or live with children - a wonderful reminder of what a precious gift children are in our lives!

5-0 out of 5 stars For the Children: Words of Love and Inspiration from His Hol
Wonderful book! The pictures are beautiful; they include children from all over the world with the Pope. As for the text, the title says it all... page after page of loving messages from The Pope Who Loves Children. I'm looking forward to sharing it with my two boys (it will be an Easter gift.) It will be a very special keepsake! The special padded, hardcover binding makes it extra-nice; it is a perfect gift for any child, from newborn on up. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful and inspired
When my brother died suddenly 2 weeks ago, my sister pulled this book out of a closet of books. A former teacher, she had saved it for years and now I know why. It was so comforting and beautifully written, magnificent. Geared toward children, the book was powerfully moving for the adults gathered as well. We read it at my brother's funeral by request of friends and family. This book opened up a dialogue about the afterlife between people of all ages and beliefs. Unintimidating, masterfully written and awesomely illustrated.

5-0 out of 5 stars PEACEFUL AT LAST
I WAS SO ATTRACTED BY THE BOOK'S COVER THAT I OPENED THE BOOK AND BEGAN TO READ IT. (I HAD BEEN AGONIZING OVER MY FATHER'S ILLNESS AND KNEW IT WAS A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE I WOULD BE FACED WITH HIS DEATH.) AS I CONTINUED TO READ "THE NEXT PLACE" WHILE STANDING IN THE BOOKSTORE, I BEGAN TO FEEL PEACE I HAD THOUGHT WOULD NEVER RETURN. EACH PAGE WAS SO BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED AND EACH PHRASE SO COMFORTING. I BOUGHT THE BOOK. I READ IT TO MY FAMILY AS WE WERE GATHERED AROUND MY FATHER'S BED, JUST MINUTES AFTER HIS DEATH. I ALSO READ IT DURING HIS FUNERAL MASS. IT SAID ALL THAT NEEDED SAYING BECAUSE DAD WAS, AT LAST, "PERFECT". I HAVE SENT "THE NEXT PLACE", IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, TO FRIENDS WHO HAVE LOST LOVED ONES. THE REACTION IS ALWAYS HUGS, TEARS AND GRATITUDE.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to explain death to a child (or an adult!)
Warren Hanson's book, The Next Place is one of the most profoundly moving and spiritually uplifting children's books;I have ever read as a educator or a parent.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough for all children and adults whose lives have been touched by the death of someone they have loved.

Buy this book, keep it on your shelf, and every once in a while,
sit down and re-read it. It will remind you of the joy of living and what it means to be a loving, caring human being.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gift for the Grieving Soul
My son died three weeks ago, and I was given this book on the day of his funeral. All I can say right now is that it was a gift of peace for my shattered soul. I read it every day, and I feel like my son is reasuring me that he is free and happy and with us still.

Give this book to someone who is griefsticken. Maybe it will help them, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wept in the bookstore....
I'm a librarian for an elementary school and have two daughters ages 6 and 5. I was looking through the children's books at the bookstore when I came across The Next Place. The illustrations are magical and the placing of the text is in perfect accordance with the artwork. It was near effortless reading as my eyes just skimmed through the lettering placed at such a "flow" as to become a part of the illustration itself. It serves its purpose well. The meaning behind the words literally spoke to my soul and I blinked back tears. I knew then I had to get it for my daughters. I hope they will read it to their children one day. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A changed teen
this devotional book is amazing! my youth group is currently working through this book. i can already see the amazing things God is doing. Being part of a youth group with out a youth pastor or youth leader is hard. When a young adult stepped up with this book i was hestitant, but i can see God working through this and in us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing
This is one of the best devotinal books I ever read. It helped me to see what God wanted for me in my life. It really turned my life around.
I was so glad I bought it at my youth camp. That's where I met Stuart Hall himself (awesome goddly man to meet). He mentioned this book at the camp for those who wanted to learn more about what he talked about. (I surly did!)
This book covers everthing from the Basics to Moral Boundries, Friends, and Choices.
God really worked on me through this Book and his very own word.
I hope any and all who read this book will be abel to see God more clearly as I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Volunteer Youth Sponsor looks at "The Seven Checkpoints"
I am a volunteer youth sponsor for our small church and youth group. Recently, and coincidentally, our full-time youth pastor and our only other youth resource person resigned. Without full time leadership we sponsors were feeling mighty inadequate. I heard Andy Stanley on a radio talk show doing a promotion for his new book. I bought the book and found it to be not only an easy read but clearly delineated and organized for even those of us in part-time volunteer ministry. Stanley and Hall offer some unorthodox but very sensible approaches to planning and maintaining a youth group over a long period of time with a specific goal in mind. The book is so easy to follow, we have decided to adapt our curriculum to their philosophy of these seven pivotal checkpoints. I recommend this book for any struggling youth volunteers like me and for any of those in full-time ministry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wise choice
Kids face so many difficult challenges in today's chaotic culture. Andy Stanley talks practically and from the heart to help teens to live victoriously in the middle of this generation. One especially helpful checkpoint is encouraging teens to make wise choices and showing them how. Rather than telling kids that they're making wrong choices, they can consider making the wisest choice in any situation. This builds them up rather than cutting them down. It nourishes the spirit rather than stifling them. ... Read more

Mommy, Please Don't Cry is a book of love and comfort for mothers who have experienced the deep sorrow of losing a child. Serene illustrations frame gentle words that describe heaven from a child's perspective. With room for the reader's personal reflections at the end of the book, every page is a poignant gift of hope and healing. "Our stories are all different, but our pain is the same," writes Linda. 5-0 out of 5 stars What a sweet and comforting book
I have read this book over and over again since the birth of my stillborn baby. It opened up a whole new perspective on heaven. Written from a child's point of view, it is very sweet and comforting to a mother's heart. My two small children read it every day for nearly a month after losing their much aniticipated sister. It taught them a lot about heaven also. I would recommend it highly to any mother who has lost their child.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for anyone that has lost a child!!!!!
I received quite a few books when I lost my twins, Bethany and Daniel, at 23 weeks gestation this year and this was one of my favorites. Having such a stong parental instinct still present even though my babies are not with me, I wanted to know that my children are safe now and that we will be together again. Linda Deymaz's book, written from the child's perspective, addresses these fears and worries wonderfully! You really get a sense of peace thinking about your eternal life with your child and with God and you are certainly sure by the end that your precious baby(ies) are extremely safe and protected in Jesus' arms. Sabrina Smith's illustrations are also extremely touching and uplifting...very well done. The only drawback of the book is that it is fairly short. I would have liked a little more time to keep forming such comforting images. I certainly do highly recommend it for anyone who has lost a child in pregnancy, infancy or even later childhood. You will read it with tears in your eyes, but with joy in your heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mommy Please don't cry
I would just like to add that I know God had a hand in this book being written in August 2003 my 18 month old was killed in an accident that took her away from us one minute she was here and the next we are planning her passing what pain our family had to go through ,but my friend called a grief center and ask what she could do for her best friend and they gave her 3 books to look for but of course the store was out so when she turned around she saw this book and this book was the answere to the questions I had at that point in my pain and myself along with my other 3 kids and the 300 plus love ones that came to say good bye. this book has ment so very much for me and the most important think to me is My little Girls name was Allison Grace and we called her Ali Grace and so God does work in shining the light to those of us who are in grieveing. So thank you Mrs DeYmaz for sharing your heart wth us.

5-0 out of 5 stars It made me smile.
Did this book help me understand the death of my baby? No, but it did the one thing that all other books couldn't. It made me smile at the thought that my daughter is safe and happy in Heaven. This book gives me a peaceful and happy feeling. Every now and then I pick this book up and read it. It's like a letter from my daughter. I recommend it to anyone who lost a child.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book helped me a lot ..
I lost my son when i was 23 weeks and 4 days into my pregnancy,i read a lot of books on babyloss but none of them touched me to the depth this book did.

Reading how it might be from Daniel's point of view comforted me beyond words,i'm not a religious person but i hope Heaven for my son is how this book describes it.

Thank you for this book,it's offered hope to many parents at the most painful times in their lives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Twelve Steps for Christians
My husband and I previously read this book and were very impressed. We are both in recovery and were avid believers in Jesus Christ. All of the traditional recovery books were vague in their spirituality, and we could relate and grow from this book. We currently use this book in our ministry, which is a recovery ministry in our church. We see many other people being blessed from it as well. I think people that have not had to deal with different addictions/bondages in their lives, could benefit from the steps/tools that are available in this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a blessing from God.
This is exactly what I have been looking for. What better sorce to go to than the Word of God to look for healing. He is the author and finisher of our faith.

5-0 out of 5 stars Build a Group on the 12 Steps for Christians
My wife and I joined a 12-steps Sunday school group using this book about a year ago. We both have had to deal with alchoholism in our families, as well as a lot of other hurdles. The book and the class have been a very good way for us to finally work through these and many other issues. The book and the class have facilitated a great deal of healing for me.

Some of our class members are in recovery for alchohol or drugs, others have various issues, but all are welcome. Our class is taking it slowly, it takes about 3 weeks to work through each of the steps. The group adheres to the principles of confidentiality and annonymity, to the point that my wife and I don't discuss the class if one of us misses and the other attends. On the other hand, the class has become a source of spiritual and emotional strength for many of us.

I strongly recommend this book (and it's companion workbook) for anyone seeking to organize a Christian 12 step program, and/or to expand their church's adult ministry. Go with God's grace.

5-0 out of 5 stars non-denomaddictional resource is perfect for church group
The Twelve Steps for Christians book is an invaluable tool for anyone interested in beginning a 12-step ministry within their church. I've coined a new phrase of "non-denomaddiction" to refer to the vast variety of people's struggles which can benefit from the reading of this book. Our group reads one step a week with the remainder of the hour spent in discussion of what we read. I am pleased to report that our group consists not only of recovering alcoholics or drug addicts, but also of people dealing with food addictions such as anorexia and bulimia. Other non-denomaddictions include adult children of alcoholics, obsessive controlling behavior, anger management, recent divorce, battles with depression and difficult parenting issues. The class is developing in to a fellowship and members truly look forward to each meeting and feel uncomfortable if they miss one. This type of fellowship is the missing bridge that people in the throes of pain and suffering need to feel Gods love working in their lives. I recommend this book and it's more in-depth companion "A Spiritual Journey". Just remember that building this type of fellowship takes great patience on the part of the facilitator. Members need time to grasp the concepts written within the steps before they are able to assist in building the ministry, after all, anononymity is the spiritual foundation of any 12-step ministry and it takes a great leap of faith to be willing to be visible.

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful tool in a life changing process.
The Twelve Steps For Christians has given me so much insight into the scriptures and applying them to my everyday life. I have been practicing a recovery program for ten years and this book enhances and re-enforces the principles that I endeavor to apply to my life in a progressive manner. I have shared this knowledge with friends and we have used it as a study guide. This book is a powerful tool for those interested in growing spiritually and experiencing a life changing process. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A heartwarming look into the hearts of children!
This book is a refreshing reminder of the simplistic mind of achild, as we read how these little ones ponder who God really is andhow He works. The questions posed and statements made by these children are heartwarming and often comical! I laughed through the whole book! A must read for a parent or teacher of children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fervent wishes, confessions, confidences, praise, and thanks
The mustered letters in this book are wonderful. In fact, they are a great delight. This is what we need to see in today's children. All of them touched my heart with laughter but not just that. The questions, innocence, and wiseness of the children (all under ten) are dominant. It shows for once that children may know better than their elders (sometimes). Particularly one letter stays in my mind:

Dear God,
I wish that there wasn't no such thing of sin. I wish that there was not no such thing of war.
Tim M. age 9

If only it were that simple. It makes one wish to never grow up. "Children's Letters to God" is splendid and is an inspiring gift for anyone who has had the pleasure of being in the presence of a child's smile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revealing...inspiring...comical
In February 2003, Rabbi Moshe Weinberger of New York arrived in Denver to deliver a lecture entitled "Echoes of Prophecy: Finding Spirituality in Everyday Living." A great deal of the talk dealt with the innate lofty spiritual sensitivity and innocence found within children. This collection of children's letters to G-d validates much of what the rabbi discussed. "Dear G-d, I don't ever feel alone since I found out about you. -Nora." "Dear G-d, how come you did all those miracles in the old days and don't do any now? -Seymour." Some of the letters will make you laugh out loud. "Dear G-d, if you let the dinasor not exstinct we would not have a country. You did the right thing. -Jonathan." "Dear G-d, did you mean for the giraffe to look like that or was it an accident? -Norma". This book is a priceless treasure to be read again and again for its amusing comical relief as well as for its deeper underlying messages and spiritual reminders as inspired through children.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Thin
The idea for the book has great potential--and some of the children's letters are very cute--but the book itself is simply too thin to merit the rave reviews that others have given it. I was disappointed that the book had so little material and it would be hard for me to recommend it at the published price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Laughter through honesty
This book had me laughing out load on a bus to the point people must have thought I was crazy. The questions these children ask are truly the most cleaver and honest thoughts that seemingly only a child can think of! It will bring back your childhood and allow you to feel the pure wonder and discovery of your youth! A MUST READ...and a wonderful gift! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Illustrations are heartwarming
This book is a real find. The illustrations are so boyish yet sweet. The print, at 4 lines and rhyming, will keep their attention. With 3 boys, we can relate to it and will enjoy it for years to come. Geared to younger boys, probably younger than 8. Scripture used is very easy to understand. Covers qualities such as obedience, cheerfulness, being kind, brave and diligent, thankful and responsible, among others.

Book Description

The classic account of the appearances of the Blessed Mother at Medjugorje--now updated for the millenium

Like Lourdes and Fatima before it, Medjugorje has become a holy site for worshippers around the world, a place that will be remembered long after the twentieth century recedes into history.

In this edition, Janice Connell presents a new intruduction that places Medjugorje in the context of the millennium and suggests that the Blessed Mother's final appearance on Earth may indeed be at this small mountain village. The author tells what has happened to the six apparitioners since the book was first published, and the Blessed Mother's monthly messages have been updated through 1997.There is also a new list of Marian Centers across the nation.

The Visions of the Children features exclusive conversations with the six apparitioners who have been receiving, for more than fifteen years, visions and messages of the Virgin Mary, including extraordinary secrets about the final chapter in the history of the world. This book not only tells of the need for love and spiritual awakening, but casts a powerful perspective on the wholescale devastation in Bosnia during the last few years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mary is the mother of every single person on this earth.
This book will truly change your life. Its message is so simple. The Mother of God is calling us back to her Son. She wants us to totally surrender to God's will for each of our lives. I read a small book on Medjugorje 13 years ago and thought to myself, Wow! that's wonderful, but that was it, I didn't think about it again until I happened to pick up "The Visions of the Children". It contains actual interviews with each of the six children who have been speaking with the Blessed Mother. What they have to say will completely involve you with what is happening in Medjugorje. This book is for every human being on the face of the earth. God does not have favorites, He loves us all equally. Jews, Catholics, Protestants, Moslems, etc. - all will go to heaven if they love Him and keep His commandments. But we can do so much more to help others. Wake up! Do not be satisfied with the life you lead now. There is more, much more. If I had the money I would buy this book for everyone. Do not pass up what The Visions of the Children has to offer. It will change your life as well as the lives of those who encounter you after you have read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Full of insight.
This book has great interviews taken from the Medjugorje visionaries. The six seers, who see or saw the Mother of God daily, are interviewed in this awe inspiring book. They tell their story simply and make responding to God's desires more easy to achieve. They are full of knowledge from heaven that we simply would not know. They do. They have seen the future and what lies ahead for those who do not turn to God. They tell us what we must do now. They speak of the importance of prayer, of a Sacramental life, of a family that prays together. This book is a "must read" for anyone interested in Medjugorje and their future. Beware of some of the theology in the introductory and concluding chapters, they are the opinion of the author-not the Medjugorje visonaries. This book is a collection of interviews. Read them and understand the greatness of those who give their lives over to Mary in order to live heaven on earth.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fluff
I have read all of Janice Connel's books and have always found them rewarding - but her works on the apparations at Medjugorje
are not up to her earlier works. She seems to be enamored with
the visonaries and has chosen to downplay or circumvent many critical areas that have challenged the authenticity of the reported visions. The author lacks objectivity and it is disappointing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for me
I came to this book wanting to believe, and leaning towards belief, but with plenty of skepticism. This book reinforced my skepticism. It is not intended as a defense of the visions, per se, but friendly non-skeptical interviews with the visionairies, and report of Marian messages to the Parish at Medjugorge, and a smattering of anecdotes of seemingly miraculous events. The interviews with the visionairies were most unsatisfying. The questions were leading and shallow, nothing like the kind of questions I wish I could ask. Even worse, the answers were stereotyped, vague, and even evasive. Was this a language barrier problem? An artifact of the interviews being condensed and edited? An effort to avoid arguments? Perhaps. But I kept comparing in my mind these transcripts with scriptural accounts of conversations with Jesus. Jesus, despite all language barriers and editing, was always very direct, clear, and substantive, and never shied away from stirring up controversy. Jesus also taught us to be on guard against the many false prophets who would surely come. I remain on guard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Visions of The Children
I have read Visions Of The Children many times over and over. After having been to Medjugorje twice I feel Jan Connell's book is probably the book which will make you feel as if you are already there in Medjugorje. I have read many books on Medjugorje. This one is my favorite because it is the most detailed about the six visionaries and their testimonies and encounters with Our Lady in Medjugorje. This book goes beyond all of the manifestations of Medjugorje like the rosaries turning gold, the sun spinning, etc- and focuses on the true messages of Our Lady and which she has been stating for the last almost 21 years. Do read this book and let it touch you as it has us those of us that have been blessed to visit Medjugorje ourselves and for those that havent this will take you on a journey there in your heart. A beautiful and inpisring book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Can be life-changing
This book brought tears to my eyes at God's love and mercy, and made me want to dance for joy at His provision and greatness. David Wilkerson started out as a preacher in a country church -- where he is a good Christian, and doing God's work. But one day, he feels as if God is leading him to New York to minister to a few thugs who have killed a boy. He follows the still small voice of the Holy Spirit and goes, and what follows is an amazing ride. God comes through again and again -- often at the 11th hour, when all seems lost. Isn't that just like God?
I highly recommend this book because it is a great testimony to what untold miracles can happen in the lives of Christians when we step out of our comfort zones and go out on a limb for God. And the way He comes through will take your breath away. If I wasn't a Christian, I would think the story was pure fiction because it sounds too amazing to be true. But because I am one, and I have caught glimpses of what God can do for His children, I can say of the miracle upon miracle in Cross and the Switchblade: "Yes, God is totally capable of that!''
To my mind, most of us don't enjoy this exhilerating journey with God because we don't trust Him enough to take risks for Him. David Wilkerson did, and God displayed all his wonders. Read this and be challenged. I certainly was.

5-0 out of 5 stars God's Grace meets New York City
David Wilkerson listened to the voice of God and obeyed. When he did, the Lord grew a holy unction into an international ministry which has now touched millions of lives around the world. From Teen Challenge Centers around the world to Times Square Church, now representing a congregation from 135 countries, to European Crusdaes and worldwide missions, this ministry is centered on Jesus Christ.

It is the unique focus on the personality and power of the Holy Spirit which separates this work from so many others.

The call to action was spoken into his life, and into the lives of a New York City street gang, headed by Nicky Cruz, in the late sixties. The Cross and the Switchblade is a modern day classic of God's power and grace infusing the most dangerous and difficult layer of society; the violent gangs.

The message is life changing, then and now.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great testimony!
Witnessing to people for many years, this book has sent a powerful message out to all who have taken the time to read it. Believe it not, this book used to be required reading in many High Schools across America.

I found this book on the Washington Monument (Mall) grounds July 4th in the very late 60's or very early 70's (I can't remember exactly) after the police broke up a very large demonstration against the war in Viet Nam. The place was littered with many items left after a "hippy vs police" riot broke out, and as the police deployed tear gas and battled the demonstrators up Pennsylvania Avenue. It was an exciting day, but it also proved to be a day which my eyes were truly opened to the power of Lord... after I started to read the worn copy I had found in the mud. I couldn't put it down. This book opened the eyes of my understanding in so many ways, and started my path towards the recovery from the battlefields of southeast asia, from the struggle to survive in the brutal climate of war. From the conflicts of doing my job as a warrior, and seeing the death and destruction of lives all around me, knowing that the bullets and bombs were not enough. I was a shell of what I should have been at 25, a survivor a fighter, enduring the ravages of the human race and coming out physically capable but mentally tormented. This book started my comeback, my recovery, my search, my seeking and showed me an open door which, once I entered in, I was given my life back. I can never forget that, I can only praise God for the revelation.

5-0 out of 5 stars The humble beginnings of a story still being written.
The Cross and the Switchblade, by David Wilkerson is an amazing book. Though written decades ago, the story is still being written. God has shown one humble man how to rely on Him, and what a wonderful harvest and hope there is for His kingdom. In the millenium we now face, in which churches are dead, religion is dead, and hate is rapant as much in homes as on the streets, this reading offers solid evidence that Christ is still a great miracle worker. David Wilkerson is not a skilled writer, but the work that Christ has written in him has proved a masterpiece. To see what God is still doing in the ministry founded in The Cross and the Switchblade, visit teenchallenge.com.

2-0 out of 5 stars Is this a fairy tale
What is reported in the book may be true but the author has definately taken poetic licence in the telling of the events. Is Wilkerson such a meglomeanic that he sees this book as an appendage to the Acts of the Apostles? Maybe so. The pictures that are contained in the book come from the movie which starred Pat Boone.
Several references are made to the devil. As a matter of fact, the devil is mentioned as mush as God in this book.
I have also heard Wilkerson preach. He should enroll himself at some divinity school and learn the concepts of Christianity ... Read more

Subtitled a "Story of Encouragement for All Ages," the Trellis and the Seed tells the story of how "God has planned something beautiful" for even the tiniest, most unassuming little seed.

The tiny seed begins its mysterious journey in the hands of the seemingly omnipotent "Nice Lady," who predicts--much to the seed's disbelief--that it will make a "beautiful vine with sweet-smelling blossoms." Even as the Nice Lady plants the seed, erects an ambitious trellis, waits for rain, adds fertilizer, and performs all her other nurserial oblations, the seed continues to be baffled by its caretaker's faith. ("It was only a seed, and very, very small. How could it ever be a beautiful vine with blossoms?") How indeed? Suffice it to say, God doesn't send a crafty bird to eat the seed in a harrowing third-act changeup.

Jan Karon's story of patience and faith shows the same folksy charm that infuses her Mitford Years series, and her gentle words find a soothing complement in the skilled, muted watercolors of Robert Gantt Steele (of the Her Story series). (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Brief, But Warm Burst of Sunshine of A Book
As a fan of Karon's, this is first of this nature of her books for me. What a delight of a quick read, all of five minutes or so. But what a read!

Story of a seed, dry with no hope of becoming anything worthy. But through being set aside, doused in water, but into the deep, dark cold ground, drowned with water, covered with manure, and struggling to reach top of the trellis and finally to produce blossoms, supported by trellis and Nice Woman, it happens.

Knowing the author's faith and numerous Biblical references to plants and bearing blossoms (e.g. Psalm 1 and Mt. 13:18-52, and John 15:1-9), one cannot but sense that this is real parable's meaning here. Although many will derive pleasure from the read and wonderful illustrations, and still others will sense morals of patience, perseverance, support, etc., the strong spiritual implications here are obvious, what with the strong Biblical allusion and Karon's faith evidenced in the Mitford writings.

Blessings on this creativity and beauty communicated so wonderfully for all ages to be encouraged to blossom and bloom where and when the Lord wills.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tickle or A Kiss?
A book of encouragement for all ages, enchantingly illustrated. God's perfect timing, mixed with grace and peace and the warmth of the earth and the water of the skies, can make us all be better than we ever imagined. A small volume, which I read in its entirety on my lunch hour, still delivers a powerful message.

A wonderful book! I give one to everyone I know who is struggling in dealing with this type of loss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!!!!!!!!!
Incredible illustrations and wonderful story!! Bought it for my children as I loved the message and thought it would be good in the loss of a pet. Now I find myself in the position of supporting a friend's child as he prepares to die after a 5 yr. battle with cancer. NEVER thought I'd need it for that but was thrilled to find the main character's age (6 yrs old)is the same as this child. I know this book will help him on his journey!

4-0 out of 5 stars Eases feelings at the loss of a pet
For anyone who loves animals and has experienced the loss of one, this story supports the emotional attachment and makes us feel the pet is in a great place. We hope for our pets to be taken care of without us, and this story sets just that stage.
The illustrations support the story and are beautiful in their own right. I have given this book to three friends with children who have lost family pets and all three felt it provided a kind word at that most difficult time.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book!
This is a must have for anyone with children or who work with children! I still can't read it without tears coming to my eyes. I am the director at a Christian preschool and we have read it many times when hearing questions of pets dying. The story helps children to cope with the lose by helping them envision their pet in a happy, beautiful place with children angels who love them. It also emphasizes the joy of one day being reunited again. Please order this book now or keep the title for future reference. I have never done a book review for Amazon but felt compelled to do one on this book! You won't be sorry!

5-0 out of 5 stars All Gods Creatures Go To Heaven
This book is wonderful. It was a gift to my daughter and I highly recommend it. I know a family who has had a young (very young) girl pass away. I decided to look for this book to give to her older brother who is only 3, to show him that his baby sister is with the Angels. This book would help anyone (even adults) feel better about a death of a child. Highly recommend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For Christians and non Christians alike
This is a book that I, as a young woman who follows the Lord passionately loved and took in, I can't say enough how much it opened my eyes to things I'm not doing enough as a Christian, and the little things I can be thankful for. And I've a devoted Christian of 2 years, think of what it can do for a person who's never accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Instead of opening their eyes to the little things that I missed, maybe they'll open their eyes to the huge thing: Salvation. I won't sit here and explain how incredible God's love is because for those who haven't experienced it no explanination will ever be enough and for those who have experienced it no explanination will ever be neccasary.
In His Grip...

5-0 out of 5 stars a generation, a revolution
(...)
This book brought some new things to my attention. After being away from home for 6 months experiencing God, and then returning home, it pumped me up to the sharing teh reality of God all over the world. Over those past 6 months, I TRUELY saw God's powerful hand, and how real He is, coming home I was a bit worried and disturbed that I wouldn't see God as clearly as I did in Asia.
I picked up this book right away and it was and still is the first book and only book i've read since my return. Let me tell you, i'm not much of a reader, but I couldn't put this book down! It was full of the REALNESS of God and the way He works in the lives of people in our everyday lives, people who we might not know we're impacting or effecting, but God many times uses us to be His vessels, to pour God's love and His Wisdom and Power onto those who are hurting or in a difficult time or situation, that God is there and many times He brings people are way to help with the process.
I think ANYONE, young or old, should read this book. Why? Because it's TRUE!, It's REAL! It's Inspiering! It's a book I would and am recomending all my peers, friends and family to READ!
I'm not a very emtional person, but this book brought me to tears as I read the TRUE STORIES and how God's REALNESS is all over the place, and we can all SEE the TRUE the Living and the REAL God, who wants to be made known, and this book does a superb job of accomplishing that.
This book taught me more about the Character of God, and how He uses the little things and the big things to make Himself known.
"if we don't praise His name even the rocks will cry out"
God wants to be known and wants us all to know Him in a REAL way. So GO AND PICK UP THIS BOOK. IT COULD JUST CHANGE YOUR LIFE, YOUR THINKING AND THE WAY YOU SEE GOD!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is good
If you have a question concerning God or problems in your life, True has a story similar, if not exact to what you're going through. As a 16 year old many stories where relevant to me, the stories that where the most convicting where trusting in God, and being an example for Christ everywhere. True covers almost all of the issues in teens life ranging from drugs and pornography, to eating disorders and fitting in. You name it most likely the book has it. Another benefit is that these teens come from a variety of backgrounds so the book doesn't just cater to an individual race, home life or income. The book gives excellent examples of the struggles, perseverance, and ultimatley the trusting in God to handle your problems. Although you may or may not agree with some of the teen writer's spiritual approach to handling their situations, God still shows up and uses the situation to glorify Himself. To sum it all up, buy (...) the book and see for yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Truth About True Vol. 1
I'm a pretty typical teenager.I spend every Friday night at the movies and every waking hour trying to fit in. And like other 17 year olds, I'm filled with the same questions about God.
Who is he? What does he want from me? Where can I find him? On picking up TRUE VOL. 1, I didn't expect these questions to be answered so thouroughly and comprehendable. Every story seemed to connect with a different aspect of my life, and every question each author answered was lurking in the back of my mind.

The stories are compiled in a way that not only keeps the reader interested, but supports the thematic structure of the book. Each section is filled with stories that address a different aspect of God's face; his love, his compassion, his forgiveness. I often find religously themed books forced, but TRUTH used the art of short narratives to positively and effectively portray ideas that are crucial to young struggling Christians.
Whether you're fighting with bulemia or a family death, TRUTH holds something for you. I still find myself struggling to realize who God actually is, but this book definitely gave me a glimpse of who I'm looking for. ... Read more

Marshall Stewart Ball had his first book of spiritual writings published at the age of 13, an impressive feat for any young teenager. But Marshall is not just any teenager. Soon after he was born it was discovered that he would probably never walk or speak. Despite his numerous physical disabilities (no doctor has been able to diagnose him with any specific diseases, illnesses, or genetic abnormalities), Marshall learned to communicate by pointing to letters on an alphabet board.

He first wrote about God at age five in a compelling poem titled "Altogether Lovely." It soon became apparent that this special child liked to "speak" often and deeply about God, love, knowledge, and freedom--sophisticated topics for a sheltered lad of 5. By age 9 Marshall tested above a 12th-grade reading level. Meanwhile, he continued with his laborious pointing/writing sessions--revealing an unusual voice with a distinct rhythm and a disarming spiritual wisdom. Fortunately, Marshall's parents saved his writings and compiled them into Kiss of God, allowing the world to behold this "silent" teacher. Each poem or essay gets a brief introduction so that readers know the story behind his loving words and how old Marshall was when he wrote it. These intimate introductions help readers see the true miracles of Marshall's life and gifts. --Gail Hudson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Marshall is love- Book Review from The Northwoods Journal
Some may call him a boy genius. Others may call him a prophet. One thing is certain about poet Marshall Ball: Anyone who has ever used the phrase, "simple but profound," does not know the meaning of that phrase until he or she reads Marshall's Kiss of God.

Marshall began writing at the age of 5 but not in the way other children write. While his elbow is supported, he points to individual letters on an alphabet board. Someone jots down Marshall's message letter by letter, and Marshall alone provides the editing and title. Marshall does not compose his writings orally, because he cannot speak.

Through a veil of silence, Marshall Ball speaks by the Kiss of God to any heart yearning for inspiration. Marshall's style of writing is wholly original, and the most learned reader will marvel at Marshall's syntax. When Marshall was collecting the writings he wished to place in Kiss of God, by the way, he composed before his 12th birthday, his mother asked him how his book should be arranged. He responded, "Attempting good fine force badly spilts Kiss of God apart." When she asked him what he meant by "force," he answered, "Forcing is giving good book great organization. Can you give love by force?"

Kiss of God builds on the premise that God is good and that "Good God," as Marshall calls Him, is his "good candid teacher." Marshall sees only good in himself, and he imparts good effortlessly. The sheer innocence of this volume prevents it from being didactic. Marshall simply sets forth insights or what he calls "kisses" from God. "Great kisses are loving, grand, great little thoughts, " he writes.

Some kisses from God come to Marshall as poems. Some come as letters. And others arrive as aphorisms. In a single-sentence letter to his "Great Good Grandpa," Marshall writes, "My feeling is our thoughts ran together for love." This tone of love and yielding to love prevails throughout Marshall's work. "In pure great Love real intelligence is manifested," he says. And he says, "Good finds the sweet giver."

After setting the tone of love in Kiss of God, Marshall offers to the reader a note in which he sets forth the purpose of his book. In alluding to the eternal questions about happiness, Marshall says, "Questions want good answers. With the help of my family and dear friends, I have been able to answer thoughts concerning old beliefs about questions regarding why people are not happy." In the following pages of Kiss of God, Marshall proves his point.

Recognition of Kiss of God is surging. Already in a second printing since an intial self-publication two years ago, the book is being republished by Health Communications, Inc., the publisher of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul Series." Marshall's publicist, Phenix & Phenix, states in an exclusive interview with this editor that negotiations are underway for Marshall to appear on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

While many poets align with suffering and consume their creativity in crafting images of pain, Marshall Ball, seemingly fulfilling the biblical prophecy that "a little child shall lead them," writes from the perspective that there is no pain. It is not enough to say poet Marshall aligns to good, to love. Marshall IS love.

5-0 out of 5 stars A flower of consciousness appears among us
As heralded by such masters as Eckhart Tolle and Don Miguel Ruiz the earth at this time is graced by a number of awakened divine flowers of consciousness which grace us with their tremendous healing power and gentility. Marshall Ball is no doubt one such light in our world. His healing gift is through the power of his words. In these important documents of our time [Kiss of God & A Good Kiss] Marshall Ball uses his gentle and seemingly simple use of the English language to incite a healing effect that evokes deep emotions and directly effects the heart. Short of a miracle, both of Marshall Ball's books are a collection of communications poetically expressed and clearly echo teachings from A Course in Miracles, Eckhart Tolle's Power of Now and Stillness Speaks, and the Conversations with God books, none of which have been a source of study for this young man of 17. It seems Truth is spoken again by another source of pure love, but here, with heavenly gentleness and a poetic voice that can lift and heal the coldest of hearts. I highly recommend reading and studying both "Kiss of God" and "A Good Kiss" as material for spiritual study and personal growth. May this gentle heavenly force continue to grace us with his divine wisdom and healing voice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Listen To The Children
Marshall Ball is exquisite. With the simplicity of a child and the wisdom of the ages, he speaks with a profound understanding that could only be Divine. Marshall cannot speak, so he uses an alphabet board to point to each letter. This is a painstakingly long process. He was born with a disease that keeps him confined to a wheelchair. At age nine, he was evaluated at school with a twelfth-grade reading level. I was pleasantly inspired by Marshall and eagerly await more writings from him. My favorite quote from Marshall is: "Can we free the world to think perfectly about the listening and marvelous children?" I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for a spiritual journey!!
Recommendation:
A great book for traveling on a journey with a special child. If you have a special child, get this book, because you may learn more about your child, and their own journey and thoughts. If you don't have an special child, then get this book and learn about the blessings that come with the pain and challenges of the journeys that parents of special children travel.

Book Review
Marshall writes, with physical assistance, of things we cannot see, or imagine in our busy and cluttered lives. Yet, these are the important, and permanent things that life is determined on, not the urgent and unimportant.

His poems are very good (fantastic considering his age and issues) and offer a mature, yet spiritually innocent viewpoint that remains objective and not caught up with our worldly challenges.

Marshall is here and suffers in order to fulfill God's purpose of helping us, and those who need spiritual assistance.

How Marshall Helped Us Learn of Our Daughter's Thoughts, and Experiences:
We have a daughter with severe cerebral palsy who cannot speak or walk an had just finished two weeks of therapy in Chicago and were catching a plane for the ride home. This was two years ago, so she was four at the time. By accident, I packed her reading books, so we stopped in the book store to find a book to read. We accidently came across Marshall's book and I explained to my daughter that Marshall was like her, and could not speak or walk, and was just a few years older. Then, I asked her if she wanted to get Marshall's book, she got very excited (happy).

On the plane we read the first few pages and came across this part of Marshall's poem...

Even though my individuality finds
sweet knowing perfection, I listen
for the answers to wishes from above.

So, I asked my daughter if God spoke to her about her wishes and prayers. She just about jumped out of her skin!!! It was like finally!!!! Someone knows my secrets!!!! Yes, I speak to God and He speaks to me!!!!

I was startled, and asked her some poorly developed questions. After a couple of months, I thought about the questions I asked and also her answers, and I realized that I really did not learn what I thought I had learned. (We have to ask her questions, with two or three answers for her to choose from, then ask additional questions to further determine her correct and precise answers).

Because I only want the truth, regardless of the issues, I spent some time to relaly think about the questions, and alternative answers that could be gleaned from my technique, then began to ask her more precise questions to nail down her responses.

What I found is that she did speak to and hear from God every night. That she did remember her personal journey (died at birth for 35 minutes), and remembered seeing God when she died. She did not remember being in the hospital, being taken off life support, or anything else.

But, when she died, she went to heaven, and was not given a choice, but was told to return to her Mommy and Daddy (which she wanted); and she was told that her purpose was to help a lot of children who were in need. (...) She came back to us - obviously - and now is a bright 6 year old who goes to full inclusion school, has many friends and lots of fun. Yet, she cannot speak, or walk, yet. (But is making great progress!)

Without reading Marshall's book, I would never have thought to ask these questions, and would have never have learned my daughter's secrets.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you will listen real quietly you can hear God talk to you
This book will touch you. There is a simplicity and purity of thought, but there are deeper more profound meanings there for you to discover on your own. Marshall is a special child of God, as we all are in our own way. Love and listening are prevalent themes in Marshall's short poems and prose. I am a grown man with grown children, and I am not prone to tears, but many of Marshall's words brought tears to my eyes. I know God talks through Marshall. 4-0 out of 5 stars The Stars are Shining in Your Heart Tonight
Mattie Stepanek's poetry leaves some people wondering how a child could express his thoughts and feelings with such style and grace, and yet as I read through the pages I find myself understanding exactly what he means, and remembering my own special words for entities when I was a child. Mattie is sparked with the grace all of us are born with, but few continue to hold. He exhibits real intelligence, not by calculating or giving us a technological advancement, not by teaching us how to manage our money or how to avoid shelling it out to the IRS. Mattie's intelligence is of the highest variety--the understanding that Love is Law and that the only things of value in this world are the eternal souls--fellow human beings made in the Creator's Image--that we meet and hopefully commune with (rather in a sandbox or by a fireplace) every day of our lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mattie - May you rest in peace. Some angels will envy you.
I'd never heard of Mattie until I tuned into Larry King one night during June 2004 to watch his show. The show was dedicated to Mattie after his untimely death from muscular dystrophy. All I can say is that I was both moved and inspired. Hearing Mattie (the show was a re-run of his 2002 appearance) read his poetry was just amazing. He saw things in ways that only a child could see. Maybe as we grow up, we look at the world differently, but his vision of the world through his poetry was refreshing and inspirational.
Being a screenwriter, I am always looking for inspiration. I have a young female character that I had developed only so far. It appears Mattie was the missing piece. It seems I was "meant" to watch that show, to take something from it. I will now complete that character by moulding some of Mattie's ideals and traits into that character.

Mattie, in your short life, you achieved more than I think I have in my 28 years on this Earth. I am a dreamer and much of my time has been wasted dreaming. Your illness was was your weakness, but your strenght showed how weak I am. Time is precious and you made the most of your time on this Earth.

With your poetry, you will have the last word. Hopefully we can all take something from your words, that are so simple, but are formed in such an awe-inspiring way. The world is complicated right now. But simple is always best. And you were the best. God Bless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now here is a role model for our children!
I am a single mother of a 7 month little boy, Georgi. My mother bought all of Mattie's books for me to read to my son and I am so grateful to have Mattie's books which celebrate love, tolerance and peace. I will use Mattie's books for guidance to raise a mindful young man who I hope also chooses to become a peacemaker and poet. God bless Mattie and his mother. We are blessed to have known Mattie who inspired so many people. The world is a better place because he lived!

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep Going Mattie! Outstanding Work!
Mattie's heart shines so brightly through his work, and uplifts the spirits of those who may feel like there is nothing left to live for. He is a beacon in the dark, and his writing is soothing to the soul.
Keep going Mattie, no matter what ANYONE says, keep up your fantastic work. You are truly a gift to humanity, and your writing is incredibly beautiful, touching, and deeply needed!

5-0 out of 5 stars I thank God for allowing me to encounter this book
My son, Dylan was stillborn at seven months. I miss my sweet boy with every ounce of my being. I have read several books but none have helped me on my road to healing such as this one has. He speaks to the bereaved Christian parent like none other. This book has provided a still and calm in my life through this tumultous journey and I am thankful. I plan on buying this book for several of my friends and highly recommend it to those looking for a little peace through the death of a loved one.

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful comfort for those who are greiving
Shortly after I bought this book, several people I knew passed on and Zig's words and insights about comfort, peace and wisdom were a real shining light for me - helping me write and say things that brought comfort to others.

It is a powerful book that is worth reading and re-reading. It is definitely a foundational book for every Christian's library.

The only reason I didn't give it FIVE stars was because he didn't address a loss that stings even worse than death - and that is rejection by a loved one.

With spousal and parental abandonment going on in record numbers, I think there is a great need for a work (like Zig's Confessions of a Greiving Christian) on healing the grief occasioned by rejection and abandonment.

He spoke frequently about how much love there was (and is!) in his family and I loved hearing about it and I love his openess in sharing his heart with all the world, but there are a lot of families that don't have that strong anchor of love at their core, and they need healing and support too.

Nonetheless, Zig's book is a treasure. It's too good to borrow at the library. This is something you'll want for highlighting and referring back to - again and again.
