5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent story and Beautiful illustrations!
I have loved this book since it first came out. The pictures are beautiful- very detailed and fun to look at. I have never seen such pretty flowers and colors in a children's book. Since reading this book, I am a big fan of Miss Spider and collect Miss Spider toys, books, etc. The story sends a very good message to kids. The story rhymes which makes it fun to read aloud.

5-0 out of 5 stars I fell in Love with Miss Spider at her tea party!
I happened upon Miss Spider about three years ago at the Denton public library. At the time my daughter was 3, I love the prose, I love the art, I love Miss Spider!

David Kirk does a wonderful job of creating an adorable "mis-fit" Miss Spider is so misunderstood! None of the other bugs want to come to tea. The story breaks your heart then shows how persistance and kindness pay off!

My daughter isn't as thrilled by the books as I am. but then again, I LOVE them. Thank God for people with such great imaginations as the author and illustrator of the Miss Spider series. I recommend Miss Spider to everyone, not just kids, the lessons are profound and the flowing prose style is wonderful. This is my very favorite book to read to children. I am a life long fan of Kirk!

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
The artwork in this book will keep any child interested. It took my daughter a few reads to get into the story and she still prefers Miss Spider's New Car, but we read this book often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vividly Gourgeous Illustrations-A Joy to Read!
~ Miss Spider's Tea Party is one of those children's books that brings delight to the adult reader as well as the child.
~ The illustrations are beautiful and vividly intricate, but not too complex for children to enjoy, the story has a very gentle wit, that adults will appreciate.
~ Poor Miss Spider invites all kinds of insects to tea, but for some reason they seem reluctant to befriend her. : - )

~ Happily, her naturally sweet charm wins her popularity in the insect kingdom over, as well as a true fan in the reader. Children really seem to love this simple tale, mostly for the beauty of the illustrations, and the sense of a happy conclusion approaching.

I highly recommend this as a book you can enjoy reading with your child. And I would definitely also recommend the sequel "Miss Spider's Wedding"!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wove a Web Around Me
My daughter and I love this book. The wording is terrific and the paintings are fantastic. She started turning the pages when she was 4 months old as she couldn't wait to find out what happened next with Little Miss Spider. Even at her age she's picky about books. I've been trying to read Eloise to her for days, but no go. However, Miss Spider is always a hit. Fortunately, it's so well written that I don't get tired of reading it time and time again. ... When she's not having tea parties or zooming around in her new car, David Kirk's colorful Miss Spider helps kids learn their ABCs and even how to count. This set of three Miss Spider board books--Miss Spider's ABC, Miss Spider's New Car, and Miss Spider's Tea Party: The Counting Book--comes in a handy cardboard carrying case with a red plastic handle. If you're looking for the rich, rhyming language of Miss Spider's New Car, you should stick with the original hardcover, for the board book edition of this and of Miss Spider's Tea Party have been abbreviated and modified as smaller books for smaller hands. In Miss Spider's ABC, the heftiest board book of the bunch with all 26 letters of the alphabet, Miss Spider's friends prepare for her giant surprise birthday party: "Bumblebees blow balloons.... Earthworms entertain.... Fireflies fandango.... Moths mingle.... Owlflies ogle." Kirk's action-packed illustrations are crisp and luminous--crawling with comically anthropomorphized bugs jumping and laughing and mingling. A fine introduction to the world of Miss Spider for the younger set. (Baby to preschool) --Karin Snelson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful message for children and adults
As a mother of 6 children, 4 biological and 2 adopted as toddlers, I feel this book presents a powerful message about seeking and finding love and acceptance in non-conventional places. I have been searching for books for our 5 year old adopted daughter that reinforce the fact that her adoptive Mommy and Daddy truly love her and will care for her even though she "grew in her other Mommy's tummy". Because my daughter is Hispanic and my husband and I are not, the subtle issue of the differences between the beetle and the spider were not lost on her. The first time we finished reading "Little Miss Spider" together, she threw her arms around my neck and with tears brimming in her eyes declared, "You're my favorite Mommy forever and ever!" What more could any parent ask for? My biological 11 year old daughter says to tell you that she loves "Little Miss Spider", too!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Love of David Kirk
I have been turned on to David Kirk since the birth of my youngest son who is now 2. Jake was given "Miss Spiders Tea Party" for his second birhday and we have both fallen madly in love with Miss Spider and David Kirk's exquisite illustrations. Little Miss Spider was a book I purchased just to complete Jake's set of books by this author and I do believe I love it the best. Little Miss Spider touches the emotions of any mother, adoptive mother, grandmother, aunt etc.. It shows the real meaning in being a mother and what makes you a mother. The first time I sat and read it with my husband I cried. It is the sweetest story of finding your mother I have ever read. The illustrations are fabulous as usual for David Kirk. I truely loved the feeling I got from reading it. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Story
"Little Miss Spider" by David Kirk is often requested when I volunteer to read with the children at my local library. They love the storyline and that the simple lines rhyme and are easy to recite.

I've read other reviewers saying that they were uncomfortable with the aspect of the book that Little Miss Spider does not end up finding her birth mother by the end of the book. In the many times that I've read this book to groups of children, they always feel the story has a happy ending. Little Miss Spider loves Betty the Beetle and Betty loves Miss Spider. They have found each other and have become family.

This story helps children who are adopted feel accepted. It may also be some children's first introduction to the idea of adoption and can give them an understanding of some of their friends' families. It's just an all around heart warming story.

I highly recommend this wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A cute book
I checked this book out from the public library for my 18 mo. old son. We read together all the time, and one of his favorite stories/rhymes is "The Itsy Bitsy Spider", so of course when I saw this book, I just had to get. This is the first book we have read by this author and we loved it! My son made me read it twice the first night. He usually rushes me through stories, but sat patiently through this one. It is short and sweet to keep a little one's attention and the pictures are great! The pages are also sturdy enough to withstand the not-so-gentle page turning of toddlers. I will definitely be purchasing this book and other "Miss Spider" books.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book!
I picked up this book because of the beautiful pictures...I was delighted when my two month old loved it too! She sits on my lap and giggles and grabs for the pages as I read the wonderful and rythmic story. She does not do this for ANY other book (including the "classic" baby books)...it even makes her smile during those fussy periods. Its just the right length too! The other LITTLE MISS SPIDER (not to be confused with Miss Spider) are equally as charming and fun. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect tale for young and old of the power of true love...
Longer than most of the Miss Spider books, this is a lovely tale that reinforces the value of true love - it's not about appearances, but the unique qualities that make one soul respond to another. I thought it might be a little over my two year old daughter's head, but from the first night I read it, she was clamoring to "hear it again!" The rhyming text and gorgeous illustrations make this book a treat for eyes and ears. I am seriously thinking of giving this book as a wedding ag gift to every couple I know!

5-0 out of 5 stars A gorgeously illustrated quirky tale of insect romance

Brilliantly-colored illustrations jump from the pages of this charming book. The story is surprisingly adult, however.

Miss Spider is rescued from the poisonous clutches of a blonde-coiffed arachnid lothario by her true (and a bit nerdy) love. Ages 6-9 are probably the best audience for this tomboyish little romance.

In a special-interest side note: Graphic designers and lovers of computer-generated illustrations will probably want to have this particular story book in their collections

5-0 out of 5 stars Adult Reader Gives Three Thumbs Up
This book MIGHT not be suitable for little kids. I would share it with my own, but each parent should read this book for him/herself first to make that decision, before sharing it with the little ones.

Even if you think the topic is a little too sensitive for your kids at this time, I recommend holding onto it until your little ones are ready -- or just buying a copy for yoursef. Because this book is excellent in all regards. It is well written, the plot is clear and funny, and the illustrations are...well, absolutely stunning. I picked this book up for myself. Once in a while, I will sit down, and literally put my fingers on the pictures. They are works of art. I like to read sections aloud, because the rhyming structure is so pleasing to the tongue.

There are very few children's books that still hold my attention. In fact, I would say that this book is a keeper for all ages. And when you decide your little one is old enough for the contents, I am sure he/she/they will delight in this superb book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not A Children's Book
I fell in love with the art work of the Miss Spider books and bought a few for my son. When we saw this book at the library I figured it was another good book in the series. I was wrong. The content of this book is definately not aimed at children. It hints at intimacy that young children don't need to be exposed to and some of the pictures are rather scary. I stopped halfway through the book, noticing some of the pictures. They could very likely give a child nightmares. Children do not need to be exposed to this content and violence depicted in the story. Let's keep them young a little while longer yet please.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Pictures, Tongue in Cheek Wit, for Adults too!
--.--.-
This gorgeously illustrated book is only a medium favorite with the kids, but its MY favorite to read aloud.
The illustrations are intricate, gorgeous and as gently satirical and rich as the text. The children can certainly enjoy the basic story of Miss Spider's search for a suitable mate, but only adults will appreciate the tongue in cheek humor as the insect world is revealed to have many social similarities with our own. If the insect world had a "Jane Austen" it would be Miss Spider.
There is a happy ending as usual with children's stories, but there was one page of conflict that the girls (at ages 6 & 7) found "scary"- I was initially surprised, but its true that all the kids I've read this to (ages 5-8) found the big dramatic moment (Miss Spider's suitor turns out to be a little too pushy) a little intense.
The dashing (yet meek and mild) hero soon sets things right, however and the kids all enjoy the pictures of the wedding preparations. This one is not for easily frightened kids, although I originally thought it was unlikely to frighten anyone.

This book is really for adults to enjoy on an entirely different level while children are entertained by the beautiful pictures and happy resolution. ... Read more

Sunny Patch School
Was the best place to go
To study the lessons
All bugs ought to know.
When the first day of school arrives, Little Miss Spider is almost besideherself with excitement. She gobbles her breakfast ("a fresh flower plate") andruns all the way to Sunny Patch School. But poor Miss Spider is in for a day offrustration. She can't seem to master the new lessons: dung digging, leafdrilling, stinging, or flying. As the day draws to a close, Miss Spider bemoansher lack of skills. Isn't there anything she can do well? We are all soonto find out...

David Kirk's bestselling Miss Spider series, including Miss Spider's Tea Party andMiss Spider's New Car,blasts the reader with brilliant splashes of color and quirky, bug-eyed (no,really!) insect characters. In this second adventure of the spinoff Little MissSpider series, Kirk's droll verses harmonize with the shiny, eye-catchingpaintings for a heartwarming tale, sure to be a favorite with Miss Spider'sever-increasing entourage of fans--especially those getting ready fortheir first day of school! 5-0 out of 5 stars a Delightful Tale
This story has made me a fan of David Kirk's work. The story is wonderful and teaches children a valuable lesson in self respect and being different, while showing that everyone is talented at something. You must never give up trying to find what your special talents are. Lil Miss Spider is excited about her first day of school, but when she arrives finds that there are many things that the other bugs can do, that she can't do well at all. At the end of the day she realizes how special she is when she courageously comes to the aid of another bug in trouble. She makes a gallant rescue and finally earns her gold star. "Our gifts, they are many: We hop, fly and crawl. But kindness," he (the principal) said, "Is the finest of all!" A perfect end to a brilliant children's story with unbelievably beautiful, bold illustrations. Your children won't be able to help themselves fall for the rhyming text as the story is brought to life with the pictures. This is a book that I delight in reading over and over again. One warning: The pages are gorgeous , but made on a thick, glossy paper. My daughter, who loves to put EVERYTHING in her mouth, got the nastiest paper cut on her lip. So now when I read it to her I give her a soft toy to keep her hands full. Ive purchased the board books as well, and those I put into heavy rotation. This is still my favorite, but will be better for her when she's a bit older.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun for kids--and has a valuable lesson as well
The best word I can think of to describe David Kirk's illustrations is sunshiny. There is a buoyant, inherently happy quality to his work that goes so well with his simple Miss Spider series. Here, Miss Spider is excited to begin her first day at school, but gets more and more disappointed as the day goes on to discover that she isn't good at anything!

As one of her buddies gets stuck in a water spout, however, Miss Spider jumps right in without thinking and helps free the trapped bug. The school principal congratulates her warmly and reminds her that everyone--EVERYONE--has some sort of talent or skill that can be used to make the world a better place.

Lots of fun for little kids, and blessedly fun for parents as well--if only to marvel at the saturated colors and marvelous detail of Kirk's illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must-have for every child!
I received this book as a gift for my 4 month old daughter-we love it! The simple rhymes are easy to read and the bright, vivid pictures hold even the youngest child's interest. Little Miss Spider is a character any child can grow up with! I also love the fact that the book is practically indestructible-the pages don't tear or warp.

4-0 out of 5 stars Caution:
Most excellent, oil painted illustrations and easygoing rhyme! Nice lesson in helping/kindness. Just misses the mark due to off-color (though true) reference to bugs in "dung"; children pay special interest--please at least spare us the detailed list of "students" with dung-related names!

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Miss Spider...You've Got to Love Her
Poor Little Miss Spider, she was so excited about going to school that she woke up extra early, ate quickly and ran to Sunny Patch School so that she could be the first one there. But once her lessons began, she felt like a failure. She wasn't very good at hiding in trees, or chirping like crickets. She couldn't master drilling leaves with her tongue and digging in dung made her sick. And when she tried to fly, she fell flat on her nose. What a miserable first day of school. That is, until she heard a poor little bug cry out that he was stuck in a spout. Little Miss Spider knew just what to do. David Kirk has written a lovely and very gentle rhyming tale, that let's all youngsters know that everyone is special and talented in their own way. His spectacular, vibrant illustrations, compliment the story and will delight your kids with their rich color and big-eyed insects. A terrific picture book that's not to be missed and a heartwarming story kids will want to hear again and again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Positively a work of art to read over and over!!
I purchased this book a year ago for my then 18 month old niece and it is her favorite book. The illustrations are vivid and the characters jump off the pages. At two and a half, she's learned to count as well as identify colors. It is a well worn and loved book. Not only does she love it but I love reading it to her as well. I will continue to gift other toddlers with this gem!!DA Lancaster,Pa

5-0 out of 5 stars We love Miss Spider!
Miss Spider's Tea Party: The Counting Book, is a favorite of my 10 month old. I have been reading it to her since she was 6 months old. It is by far her favorite among all of her board books. She is captivated by the vivid art work and loves the rhythm of the story. I was so pleased with it that I bought it for my 2 year old niece. It has become her favorite. The board book stands up to wear and tear. I highly recommend this book all the way around!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Artwork
This book has some of the most beautiful artwork you will ever see in a children's book. My 17 month old took a few tries to warm up to the story, and it still isn't a favorite of hers. A lot of times we will just sit and look at the pretty pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Miss Spider's Tea Party
My daughter loves this book. She just made 2 and she repeats the ending of each line in this book. I bought it twice because that's how much she loves it. I can read any other book to her, but in the end she makes sure I read Miss Spider's Tea Party. It's a beautifully illustrated and very very well written book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Way to Learn Counting
What's really interesting about this book is the art work. Your child would be mesmerized with the vibrant colors, beautiful and detailed artwork. These elements work to get your child interested in the book. What's more, there's a simple story that goes with it which makes the book fun to read. Eventually, your children will learn to count after reading the book over and over and over again. (You know kids, once they like a book, they'll ask you to read it for umpteen times!). Thus, our intention of wanting them to learn or wanting to introduce them to numbers is finally achieved. It is done subconsciusly, which is good, coz we don't want them to feel stress out. The interest just comes along on its own without us forcing it through. ... Read more

It's Christmas Eve and Miss Spider should be feeling full of cheer. But even in her cozy home, among wrapped gifts and the brightly decorated tree, there's something missing. It isn't until Miss Spider finds a friend with whom to share the joy of the season that her one Christmas wish comes true.

David Kirk's much-loved Little Miss Spider (Little Miss Spider, Little Miss Spider at Sunnypatch School, etc.) continues to warm the hearts of her fans in this touching, jolly holiday tale. Young readers will enjoy the image of Miss Spider and her new friend Asparagus Beetle making "snow butterflies" (like our snow angels, but made with lots more legs) and dashing through snow tunnels "mined by the mice." 5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas Storyteller
My little niece literally devours the Little Miss Spider series -- and sometimes, no review beats a two year old's reaction. On glossy paper rich with colors and gorgeous illustration, the simple story of Little Miss Spider on yet another adventure hypnotizes my little niece. This book is great for any young child who loves to read and enjoys being read to. Simple word play and rhymes are fun and interesting. The book itself is very small so it can be handled easier with children's hands and additionally, it isn't too long to induce tedium or boredom. All in all, it's a great little stocking stuffer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very fun and educational book!!
My 18 month old son loves the Miss Spider books!! He is learning his ABC's by my reading Miss Spider's ABC book to him. He also has learned his numbers from the Miss Spider's Tea Party (A Counting Book). He brings me these books to read to him all of the time. He loves them. The illustrations are so vivid and beautiful! I will be buying the Miss Spider books he does not have for Christmas!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Fun
On the way to work the other morning I realized that I have this entire book memorized. "Ants await, Bumble Bees blow balloons..."

I purchased this book when my daughter was 5 months old because I was attracted to the beautiful illustrations. My daughter loves the book. She is now 13 months old and says "book" and always grabs "Miss Spiders ABCs". It is her favorite out of about 2 dozen books. She even kisses the spider on the "Red Roses shelter smiling spiders" page. I would recommend this book to all babies and tiny tots as well as all art lovers, bug lovers and anyone with a good sense of humor!

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
As with other David Kirk books the artwork is beautiful. As other reviewer's commented the letters are difficult to recognize however. My 17 month old loves to look at the pictures although she isn't too interested in the alphabet yet. We still have fun reading this book though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but...
This is a wonderful ABC. David Kirk's illustrations are vivid and consume the whole page with color. His text is poetic (eg, termites tunnel underneath very vivid violets). I have only two small criticisms:

1. The alphabet letters are highly stylized. Very young children may have difficulty recognizing them because of the extra curlicues and whatnot.

2. My copy of this book had two W and X pages, but no Y and Z page. Obviously I'd like my children to learn the last two letters of the alphabet as well as the first 24.

Because of David Kirk's beautiful style, however, I still read this to my children several times a day. They love Miss Spider and the world of tiny bugs she inhabits.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous colors!
I'm in it for the vibrant colors! Beautiful sweeping illustrations and bold looks. Ok, maybe a little for the unusual theme of BUGS, but I think this little book is so marvelous.
It goes through the ABC's of bugs prepping for a surprise birthday party for Ms. Spider. Very cute; rhyming and everything.

David Kirk, creator of the bestselling favorites Miss Spider's Tea Party and Miss Spider's Wedding, has created another deliciously quirky, rhyming Miss Spider adventure. This time the amiable arachnid is car-shopping with her husband Holley. At Mantis Motors, a praying mantis named Mik is a used car sales-insect: "Mik Mantis crooned, 'This honey runs/On Nectar from a flower./Its two-stem engine is equipped/With turbo-bumble power,/And capable of reaching speeds/Near ninety yards per hour!'"

Miss (or is it now Mrs.?) Spider and Holley explore other car lots (including Meg's Wings n' Things) and encounter a few near misses, but all ends well thanks to the help of benevolent Moth Sue. The book's clever and original verse is laced with subtle ironies that won't be lost on you or your little ones; in the first spread, for example, a note arrives "snail mail," because the postal carrier is a snail. Kirk's exuberant, luminous colors and hilarious, cartoonish depictions of the bug world are truly wonderful. Miss Spider's New Car is the perfect book for any child who loves cars or bugs--not to mention a clever gift for any adult itching to buy his or her dream car. (Ages 4 to 8) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars she loves the "chuggy buggy"
My 2 year old loves this book. She loves the variety of silly sounds and she is delighted by the pictures. We love reading it to her. Now on to the rest of the Miss Spider series......

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Pictures
Quite by accident we stumbled upon MISS SPIDER"S TEA PARTY when my granddaughter was five. That book was to be touched, read, and taken to bed a many nights before she fell in love with the next one (MISS SPIDER'S WEDDING). The rhyming does not take away from the message of virtues that can be found in any culture. Holley is her hero because he wears glasses and shows kindness. We have collected all of Mr. Kirk's books and can't wait for future books to be presented. The vividness and texture of the pages held her attention long after we had finished reading a particular page. She clapped and cheered for Holley and wanted explanations of phrases that at that time was beyond her comprehension. Now she reads these books herself and although she has them memorized by heart; she still turns page by page to view the characters and touch the colors. What a wonderful way to start on the pathway of reading for fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Chuggy Buggy is the Best
My daughter loves the line about the Chuggy Buggy and this is her favorite of the Miss Spider books. Of the three it is the one we read the most. She loves it and I have to admit it is pretty fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the strongest entry in the series
The illstrations, while vivid, are a bit obtuse and difficult to discern. The prose doesn't flow. The book simply can't stand alone the way the "counting Book" and Miss Spider's Mom, do. If your child is hooked on Miss Spider, then this will be a fun addition to your collection, but it shouldn't be your first choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Miss Spider's Wedding
This book is pure poetry; a tender love story with rhyming language that flows to the ear like warm honey. It presents softly the mystery of attraction, devotion and pairing between individuals who from outward appearances are totally unsuited for one another. Dramatically illustrated, the romance between aphid and arachnid teaches tolerance for and acceptance of those who are different from ourselves. Its lyrical vocabulary is satisfying to the adult reader as well as little people. In fact, it brings tears to my daughter-in-law's eyes when she reads it to Jack and Mimi. ... Read more
