Clarification
I think the previous reviewer is discussing some other book than this one. I am a co-worker of the editor who compiled this anthology, so I am very familiar with this book and series (Opposing Viewpoints). There is not a chapter in this book on Third World poverty. The 4 chapters are titled: Is Poverty a Serious Problem; What Are the Causes of Poverty? Can People Work Their Way Out of Poverty? How Can Poor People Be Helped? Each chapter presents pro and con views; for example, in chapter 1, Is Poverty a Serious Problem, the 8 articles debate whether government programs have worsened or reduced poverty; whether the condition of the poor is improving or worsening; whehter economic inequality has increased or decreased; and whether the problem of the working poor is exaggerated or ignored. Also, no article in this book was written prior to 1994; it is the publisher's intent to present recent arguments in all its books (generally, no older than 5 years from the date of publication).The Opposing Viewpoints books are excellent resources for students who are writing papers on the topic as more than one side of the issue is presented.
