In The Kid's Guide to Money: Earning It, Saving It, Spending It,Growing It, Sharing It, author Steve Otfinoski achieves a complicated feat: explaining to kids (ages 9 through 12) the fundamentals of how to thrive in the American economy. Otfinoski uses an easy, informative tone, and focuses on the young entrepreneur who wants to earn money. The authorpromotes the joys of work, finding a job or building a business, developing advertising, and so on. Later chapters provide explanations of banks, budgets, careful consumerism, taxes, investments, and, finally, charitable donations. Throughout, Otfinoski sprinkles interesting sidebars (called Money Moment and Kid Cents) featuring odd facts about money and quotes from kids. Humorous drawings liven up the chapters, and the appendices include a detailed glossary. Cheers to Otfinoski for making what is often a dry, boring subject a fascinating opportunity for learning and fun.--Ericka Lutz ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Number two in a nine book series that every student needs!
I was hooked on Richard Maybury's series after reading "Are you Liberal or Conservative? Or Confused?" I immediately ordered the entire series and have not regretted it for an instant.

I began with number one and moved through them all in the correct order, or at least the recommended order by the author.

"Let's talk about Personal, Career and Financial Security" was the first and just wet the curiosity. It left you wanting to know more.

This book began the meat and potatoes of a series that is easy to read, written on an understandable level for everyone and enlightening to all concerning the many mysteries of historical, economic and governmental issues and interminglings that have to do with social, moral, political and so many other issues.

I would recommend this series as a Middle School Required reading text with in depth discussions and working groups for the youth of America to be better informed than they now are about the world and how it all works and fits together.

Mr. Maybury's elaboration of the various "Models" that people create for the world they try to live in was a very thought provoking exercise and explained a great deal about the great divide that currently separates the American consciousness.

Two down and still batting a thousand. Great job Mr. Maybury.

5-0 out of 5 stars GET THIS BOOK!
This is an awesome book on economics. It is a fun and easy way to learn about WHY and HOW our economy works..I learned so much......my father gave me this book and I have not stopped raving about it...FIVE STARS!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book.
I'm embarrassed to say that I learned more about our economy in this half-inch book than I ever did attending college (which included several econ and management science courses, some of which were pretty high level).

Maybury is to economics, what Luther was to the papacy, and Paine was to the political elite.

Bravo.

Maybury for President!

If you want to understand money and the economy, this is a great place to start. Enjoyable reading as well.

I plan to read the entire Uncle Eric series.

Buy it, you won't regret it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Short, concise course in economics
Must reading for anyone who thinks understanding economics is beyond their reach. Richard Maybury explains economic "jargon" in anyone can grasp it terms. ex: debasing, Tanstaafl, Gresham's Law. Great crash course in economics and our free enterprise system. This is required reading in our homeschool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be taught in school
After having suffered through four college econ courses (Principles and Intermediate) I have come to the conclusion that most professional economists are nearly worthless ivory-tower eggheads whose theories are almost completely disconnected from the real world, and that "Ph.d" truly does mean "Piles high and deep." It is truly a shame that a reader can learn more from this marvelous little book than from getting a degree in economics. This book should be taught starting in junior high. It's clearly and simply written and very few of the concepts require a great deal of thought. After understanding it, you'll trust your own judgement over the babblers on tv and in the universities. ... Read more

Steve Mariotti, a former New York City high-school teacher, founded the nonprofit National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship after he discovered that students who launched commercial ventures tended to eventually blossom in numerous areas. In this updated edition of The Young Entrepreneur's Guide to Starting and Running a Business, he lays out the critically relevant basics on everything from recognizing opportunities and researching markets to handling finances and protecting ideas--all organized and written specifically for the younger reader. Brief case studies and inspiring tales of notables who started young, including Russell Simmons of Def Jam, Tom Monaghan of Domino's Pizza, and Steve Perlman of WebTV, offer encouragement. New chapters on technology (explaining, for instance, ways that computers and the Net provide competitive advantages) and philanthropy ("ethical business behavior is not only morally right, it's good for business") bring Mariotti's advice into the 21st century. No single volume can provide all the details necessary to get an idea up and running, but this one contains enough information and stimulation to move practically anyone off the couch and into the beginning stages of entrepreneurship. --Howard Rothman ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book.
I beleive this is a great book. It gives excellent motivation in getting started in a business. It helps you to understand how to run your business and get it started. It even gives you examples of current businesses started by young entreprenuers.

1-0 out of 5 stars waste of money
I regret buying this book. It's not a guide for young people to starting your own business unless you call part time babysitting a business or selling your goods at a flea market as having your own business. The "businesses" the author has in mind are are, for example, selling homemade goods to your friends or anyone else you can get to buy them. If you call having a lemonade stand a business, then this book may pertain to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for aspiring entrepreneurs
This book is a great book for young (highschool) people to learn the challenges and opportunities afforded in entrepreneurship. Excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars best of its breed
This is one of the better basic books on starting a business aimed at kids. Clearly written and organized, the book helps any fledgling entrepreneur understand basic business concepts, learn how to read and understand financial statements, create a sound business plan, and manage finances intelligently. There are good resources suggested in each chapter. And there's a sample business plan and workbook included as well. Good starting point.

4-0 out of 5 stars More Inexperienced than Young
I still haven't taken the plunge in starting my own business, but I've been doing a lot of reading about doing so. When I picked this up from the library, I expected to take one evening to zip through it. However, it seems to cover the basics of running a business very well. If you have already started your own business, you've probably already dealt with most of the issues presented here. If you're new to the business world (young or old), this book deserves serious consideration. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars If You Made A Million
I strongly think you should read this book because it is funny. It has a wizard that does magic and he helps kids learn how to save their money. You should extremely like this book because the kids make things and they get money. They also babysit a giant baby for one thousand dollars. A boy makes a bridge and they do their chores. They also do incredible things.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great way to learn about the consequences of advertising!
While doing a report on advertising, I came across this book and realized that it had enough information for my whole 4-page essay. "Advertising: Information or Manipulation?" talks about exactly what is promised in the title: the effects of advertising. This book address the title question from many angles: the effect on children, liquor and tobacco advertisments, and places that companies advertise to get you to notice their ad. This book is a must-read for anyone who needs any information on advertising for any reason, either for a school report or for launching a small business. This book was a lifesaver for me when I needed the information to complete my report, since all the information came from one, easy-to-understand, straighforward source. ... Read more

Updated with new illustrations showing new-issue currency, new information, and several new features, this popular title for older boys and girls tells the story of money.

  • How and where is it printed?
  • What do all those long numbers and special letters on currencymean?
  • How are the newly designed bills improvements over the old ones?
  • How can banks afford to pay interest?
Here too are questions and answers that have special meaning for kids. For example, how can boys and girls find savings programs designed especially for them? How can they establish their own bank account, write checks, and use an ATM card? How can kids learn about stocks—and even start to invest their own money? The author offers ideas on how kids can earn, save, budget, and invest money of their own. She also presents puzzles and games that focus on the theme of money. 1-0 out of 5 stars Another terrible book!
This is not a good book to teach children the value of money and its worth in their lives. This author must have gathered all the Wall Street Journals for the past year and written in her own words what the Journal printed. It is choppy and teaches nothing about real money sense. Look further. A parent of five!

I have to tell you I was so impressed with this book; I was practically quivering; I read the first 30 pages and I don't think I've ever seen anything better. 5-0 out of 5 stars Multicultural rich with wonderful pictures.
This picture book has a vivid collage pictures which accents the wonderful story. It has a great story line that almost any child can relate to. Pre-school - 2nd grade could greatly benefit from this book, discussing everything from animals to Thai. The multiculture ideas run wild in this book and leave doors open for children to explore and discover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for any age!!
I recently purchased this book for my 2 1/2 year old son. The repetition is wonderful for their absorbent memories. He reads along with me and even uses her ideas for animal sounds (ie..elephant says, 'hmmm-praaa'). I've heard him copying her animal sounds while playing. We begin this book in a very quite tone and by the time the mother has reached the elephant... she and we are shouting in exasperation for the elephant to be quiet. My son laughing the entire time that the baby ISN'T sleeping. We love this book... I wish I had found it sooner. I recommend this with no reservations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great simple story with Thai background
"Hush! Elephant, elephant, don't come shrieking, can't you see that baby's sleeping? Elephant, elephant, don't you cry, my baby's sleeping right near by." And so the Thai mom refrains through an elephant, monkey, cat, mouse, lizard, water buffalo, duck, etc. Wonderful illustrations in earth tones. We enjoy having other cultures as primary characters in our books, so the combination of characters, simple story and beautiful illustrations makes this one of our favorites and a common gift to our friends' toddlers.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 16-month-old daughter's favorite!
Whenever we sit down in the nursery rocker, my daughter points emphatically at the bookshelf and says, "Huss! Huss!" This is her favorite book, at bedtime and during the day, and it has been for many months.

The highly original artwork is colorful (in a warm restricted palette sort of way) and captivating, showing scenes from varying angles and, despite it's simplicity, captures the expressions on the mother's face perfectly. The rhythm of the text is almost hypnotic. The animal sounds and pictures are very educational for a toddler, and my little one laughs at the baby in the story as he climbs out of bed and does his antics in the background, the mother unawares. My girl loves to find all the animals in the picture near the end of the book after the mother has convinced them all to, "Hush!" And she kisses the pages with her favorite animals, like the cat and the mouse, and even the pig!

The pictures convey the feel of the hot Thai evening and transport us to a world quite foreign to most, and are a whole lot of fun. The text is lulling or exciting, depending on how we read it. I absolutely recommend this book and so does my 16-month-old daughter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very sweet
My kindergartener, who can read, loved this book. She loved the rhyme for each animal: "Hush! who's that peeping? can't you see that baby's sleeping? ... don't you cry, baby's sleeping right nearby" because she could join in. It was also easy enough for her to read. I heard her repeating it in the car for several days afterward. I enjoyed it too. Great for diverse classrooms and parents of children adopted from Asia. ... Book Description

In December of 1994, twelve-year-old Iqbal Masih was honored as a hero. Just two years earlier, he had been a slave, condemned to a lifetime of bonded labor in a Pakistani carpet factory. And five months later, he was dead, murdered in his homeland. Though he is gone, his actions inspired an international campaign of middle-school students and adults that is helping to free and to educate thousands of child laborers. Here is the powerful story of Iqbal's life and death, and of the movement that continues the struggle against child labor today.

This book does more than recount Iqbal's own amazing odyssey. Both sobering and inspiring, it shows how we are all implicated in the global practice of child labor, and how we can all work together to end it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Hero to Remember
In the month of December of the year 1994, there was a 12yr old boy honored as a hero. Iqbal Masih had been a child slave in a Pakastani carpet factory. Five months later Masih had been murdered in his own homeland. Though his life was taken, his actions live on as he inspired middle school students world-wide and adults to help free and educate the child laborers. This is a powerful story of a courageous boys life and death. Masih was a remarkable boy who lived a very full, inspirational life in a tragically short life spand of only twelve years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Iqbal Masih and the Crusaders Against Child Slavery
The story of Iqbal changed my perception of a child's place in the world. Who would have thought a four-year-old could be sold for approximately twelve dollars and forced to work in a rug factory? Who could imagine that a twelve-year-old Iqbal could speak for the rights of children in Pakistan?

This book made me angry and it made me cry. Susan Kuklin describes the lives of poor Pakistani families who are forced to sell their children into a life of bondage. This compelling piece of creative non-fiction is aimed at the middle school market, but the story is universal, and the black and white photos allow the reader into a world that is not an urban tale--but all too real. A must read for anyone that is interested in the future of the world's children.

I'm a media specialist at BelleVue Middle School in Florida. A small group of students and I read this book together. My students were shocked that many villages in Pakistan are too poor to have schools. They compared younger brothers and sisters to Iqbal in the factory. They learned a great deal about mobility and what it would be like to not have it. This book has a helpful index and glossary of terms as well as descriptive side-bars that make research easy. ... Book Description

By the early 1900s, nearly two million children were working in the United States. From the coal mines of Pennsylvania to the cotton mills of New England, children worked long hours every day under stunningly inhumane conditions. After years and years of oppression, children began to organize and make demands for better wages, fairer housing costs, and safer working environments. Some strikes led by young people were successful; some were not. Some strike stories are shocking, some are heartbreaking, and many are inspiring — but all are a testimony to the strength of mind and spirit of the children who helped build American industry. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One child's response
My seven-year-old daughter is reading this book now. This morning, she said to me, "Daddy, I'm so glad you got me this book from the library. But there's one thing I don't like: those companies were so mean! And why? Because of money, that's why! But those people aren't any better than other people are. It's just the way the black people used to be treated, it wasn't fair. People should be treated nicely, not just the rich people, that's what I think." So if you want to nurture a sense of social justice (and maybe a little social rebellion) in your child, this seems to be a good book. I can't wait to read it when she's done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Labor History Lives!
Kids on Strike is an excellent introduction to U.S. labor history. The book is well-researched and enhanced by the addition of a chapter-by-chapter bibliography. Bartoletti uses her journalism background to weave an eloquent and powerful narrative. Even adults will learn something new. I, for instance, was completely unaware of how a teen-age girl led a widespread (and successful) rent strike in New York City in 1907. A great addition to school libraries. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great place to start
I have an older version of this book. The latest has added a section on shared currency. The cover on the older version has more exotic coins such as heart cutouts. However any version of this book shows a lot of colorful pictures of script and coin. There are simple descriptions of the making of and measuring of money. If you are a coin collector the descriptions help enhance the collection by telling what the symbols represent on the coin as well as some tog the history. My only disappointment was the lack of information on porcelain notgeld. This makes you wonder what else may be missing. Well you can not stuff everything in to 64 pages with pictures.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Educational Book About Money!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Educationl Text
I'm a teacher and I find the Eyewitness books highly educational. I like the way the concepts are presented in a form without backgrounds. This gives clear facts to the reader without over taxing the attention span. The books are highly informative, presenting difficult concepts in comprehendable chunks that stimulate interest. I have almost the whole collection for my own children and they LOVE them!

Colorists simply apply felt-tip pens, crayons, pencils, or paints to each illustration and create their own stained glass work of art by placing the finished picture in a window or near another source of bright light. 5-0 out of 5 stars Culture jamming for the younger generation!!
I thought that this book was very interesting when I picked it up, because I had never seen anything like it! Even the author states:
"Do you remember the day one of your parents sat you down to have a serious talk about advertising? Me neither."

Basically, no one really teaches you about this stuff. I remember that in seventh grade, one of my favorite subjects was called, "Propaganda." It taught you about how advertisers use good looking people to sell products, or how they compare against other products. It was interesting, but didn't last very long! You usually learn about it yourself and by that time, you are up to your eyeballs in debt!

The book looks at both sides of the story. It points out how advertisers try to get your attention and may do things that aren't always ethical, but it also points out the facts.

There are some sections called "Try this at home!" Basically, these are exercises to make people more aware of the advertising around them. One suggests to look around your environment and see if the melting pot of society exists on your TV or in commercials. Chances are, it doesn't. On another section similar to this, the book asks you to look at the ingredients on a "brand name" product and a "no name" product and see if the ingredients are the same. Usually, they have similiar contents but people are more familiar and feel more comfortable with the brand name. So, we are more likely to buy it.

Towards the end of the book, there is a section that gives you information on how to speak out about what you think may not be right. If you are offended by something that is advertised to you, it suggests that you write to the company, because writing is taken more seriously than a phone call. There are also resources in the back on how to get a hold of companies and organizations that can continue to help you in your quest!

Must read for pre teens and teenagers alike! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
This book was really helpful. It tells you games you can play with kids and even things to say to kids when they arebeing bad. It tells you how to be organized and gives you some tips on keeping the child calm. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!
This is a really great handbook with a lot of info. There are sections in the book on deciding whether or not you're ready, mealtime, bedtime, when kids get scared, games and activities to play with the kids, changing diapers, when kids say, "But my mom lets me!", and first-aid and safety tips. There are even business and info cards that you can punch out. I recommend this book with a good first-aid book and, of course, a babysitting course!

2-0 out of 5 stars Sugar and Spice and NOT everything NICE
I bought this book with a gift certificate. Half of the information was helpful. Common questions that I had hoped to be anwsered, like how to feed an infant, how to bathe small children, and how to get a baby to fall asleep, (where just a few examples)where not anwsered.

4-0 out of 5 stars Keep the Age in Mind
This is a well written beginning babysitters guide. My problem with it is that it is written for 9-12 year olds and many states require that babysitters be 13 years old and have a babysitting class. If you aren't sure about your state's requirements (or didn't realize they existed), call your local department of Family and Children's Services and ask them the home-alone and babysitting age requirements.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Babysiters Guide EVER!
I just got certified as a babysitter and I thought I'd read some more about it! I got this book and it covered more than the class did! I covers everything you need to know! I like how it has game recomendations for different ages! This book rocks! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Man Behind the Jeans
I myself enjoyed the book. The book makes for easy reading and it gives you a deeper look at Levi, but not too deep that it will start to bore a child. I believe it would be perfect for a student in the 4th grade because it ties into the Gold Rush era, which they are studying.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son & I greatly enjoyed this book.
It was a fun, exciting short storybook. We laugh and talked about interesting parts of his life and what he went through to get here. We were studying immigration at the time of our reading. Very good book. I encourage you to read it!! ... Read more

Book Description

Dr. Robert Mason, the current recipient of the National Science Foundation"s Young Investigator Award, has been studying a mysterious phenomenon for over fifteen years: the reemergence of tens of thousands of red-sided garter snakes — the world"s largest concentration of snakes — after a winter spent in a state of suspended animation in subterranean caverns.

This gathering each spring in the forests of Manitoba, Canada, is one of the most extraordinary events of the natural world and is the subject of study for Dr. Mason, a.k.a. the Snake Scientist.

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique look into one of the wonders of the world.
Sy Montgomery and Nic Bishop have managed to bring this awesome display of nature and the man who studies it to life! This book would be a wonderful addition to any household, library or school, as it describes the work of a dedicated scientist who has committed his life to understanding what we as humans can gain from the lives of garter snakes. Dr. Mason obviously loves his work and loves passing along his knowledge to others, young and old. "The Snake Scientist" is an accurate picture of an almost undescribable phenomenom.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspirational book for kids
This book about the adventures of Bob Mason, an Oregon State University scientist who studies snakes all over the world, is a must-read for any child (grades four to seven would be great) who loves science or nature - and a good gift idea for any parent who would like to steer their kids in that direction. Easy to read, great photography, compelling stories about snakes, science, the growth of a young boy who just started out watching nature shows on TV and turned that interest into a career as a world-class zoologist. Excellent choice!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning photography
A fabulous book, replete with color photographs of the snakes. Kids will gravitate to the pictures first, and then the text will engage them in Dr. Mason's research. His comments are child-oriented, yet will not insult the older readers in the audience. Bob's stories of his childhood and career path are an added bonus to this book....and may even encourage more budding "Snake Scientists"! Well done! ... Read more
