Book Description

Unabridged Audiobook - 9 CDs, 10 hours, 12 minutes - Read by Shelly Frasier

When Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert of Green Gables send for a boy orphan to help them out at their farm, they mistakenly get Anne Shirley, a feisty, independent but warm-hearted 11 year-old girl. Fortunately her sunny nature and quirky imagination win the hearts of her reluctant foster parents and everyone in the community. But not a day goes by without some memorable adventure or prank in the tragicomedy of her life. Early on she accidentally dyes her "cursed" red hair green. Later, in an effort to impress a neighbor she bakes a cake, but with liniment instead of vanilla.

Lucy wrote that Anne is an extension of herself and represents the independent, "new" woman of the emerging 20th century. Individualistic, resourceful, and of a great humanitarian heart, she remains a great role model for girls and women today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Anne of Green Gables
"I'll try and do anything and be anything you want if only you'll keep me." This is how "Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery begins.
Anne Shirley is a twelve-year-old girl who is brought to Green Gables only to find they were expecting a boy. The Cuthberts however, are one over by this queer, imaginative girl with bright, red hair and decide to allow her to stay.
Green Gables is a lovely, little farm just outside of a small town on Prince Edward Island called Avonlea. It is surrounded by fields and forests, which hold many surprises for adventurous Anne.
Throughout this book Anne's fierce temper and wild imagination often get the better of her, but she usually manages to squeeze out of these scrapes.
Anne's melodramatic nature and fiery temper keeps you interested as you read this marvelous book.
Montgomery's humorous writing style gives life to the characters so that you feel like you are meeting them in person.
I think that this was a wonderful book filled with humor, drama and tears. I would recommend this book to anyone that has ever had a dream and loves a good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Anne of Green Gables
'People who haven't red hair don't know what trouble is. Mrs. Thomas told me that God made my hair red on purpose, and I've never cared about Him since.'

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

Upon arriving at the Cuthbert's home on Prince Edward Island, Anne Shirley, a vivacious and imaginative young orphan girl, was devastated to hear that she was a mistake. The Cuthbert's had wanted a boy. Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, an elderly brother and sister, decide to keep her, and from that moment nothing is the same.
Cracking a slate across a boy's head, getting her best friend drunk (accidentally of course), saving a baby's life, and nearly drowning herself are all part of Anne's daily life. Marilla and the neighbors couldn't help but express their disappointment with the little newcomer'at first. To most she knows, Anne becomes an irreplaceable addition to sleepy Avonlea. Anne is changing too. Gradually she becomes more mature and learns to control her sometimes fiery temper.
Anne of Green Gables is unpredictable and hilarious; you can never tell what Anne will do next! I loved her endless questions about the world, and her passionate love of life. Anne Shirley is one of the most enjoyable characters I have ever read about, therefore, I would recommend this book to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars the most original child-heroine in literature
Mark Twain called Anne "the most delightful child heroine since the Immortal Alice [in Wonderland]." This story of the impulsive but lovable orphan girl Anne Shirley who wins the hearts of all and finds a loving family and community is one of the most heart-warming and enchanting stories ever written, with many millions of readers world-wide testifying to this fact.

Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert are an elderly brother and sister living together at Green Gables. They're getting on in years and they want to adopt a boy to help them run the farm, but instead by mistake a girl is sent them. Matthew is charmed by Anne from the start and wants to keep her, but Marilla is a stern and stubborn woman on the outside and at first she wants to send Anne back. Little by little, however, she too starts to fall under the spell of that spunky, charming, amusing, irrepressible redhead Anne, and they end up keeping her. The rest of the novel is rife with funny incidents of Anne getting herself into and out of trouble, and you will be amused and tickled to no end. Watch the movie too. Highly Recommended!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A really great read when you're 9 years old!
I got this book for Christmas and read it straight away. I think that lots of people would like it because not many books are about an orphan and her adventures.

5-0 out of 5 stars A favorite of mine
Anne Shirley will always have a special place in my heart as one of my favorite literary characters. The reread delighted as much this time as the first time I read the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Montgomery's classic novel with photos from the series
I first read L. M. Montgomery's classic novel "Anne of Green Gables" after having stumbled across the Kevin Sullivan production on PBS. I then proceeded to work my way through all of the Anne books and everything else written by Montgomery that I could get my hands on (this was before everything got reprinted in paperback). The chief charm of this particular edition of "Anne of Green Gables" is for those who will always think of Megan Follows, Colleen Dewhurst and Richard Farnsworth as Anne, Marilla and Matthew. This storybook version, with a more than adequate condensation by Fiona McHugh, is illustrated with photographs from the exquisite television production, which captured the captivating charm of the novel. So what if Dewhurst is not as skinny as Montgomery describes Marilla or that Patricia Hamilton is not as large as the Rachel Lynde in the Anne books? I am one of those countless admirers who consider these performers to be the "real" characters from this beloved novel. I read one of the original reviews of "Anne of Green Gables" from way back when that complained Anne did not change over the course of the novel. Of course the point is not how much the imaginative red-haired orphan changes once she comes to live at Green Gables; the point is how she changes those around her. Who would not fall in love with the endearing antics of this glorious child, who comes from one crisis to the next with such dramatic and comic flair? That is why this is an enduring classic that we pass down to our children at the earliest opportunity. Whether you start with the television film or this storybook, be sure you enjoy both and eventually get to the complete original classic novel.

4-0 out of 5 stars Full of Life and Imagination
This book is a must for all Lucy Maud Montgomery fans...or anyone who enjoys a good read. Anne Shirley is full of life and imagination, making every page more exciting and enjoyable than the last. Anne's adventures through school and finding a family keep the reader interested with every page turn. It is a wonderful story and should be read by all. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Read immediately after finishing The Story Girl!
I enjoyed The Golden Road, but not as much as I enjoyed The Story Girl. I recommend you read the two novels together, one right after the other. If you enjoy reading books set in a long-ago era, the books have a charm to them. If you like action, these books will not appeal to you as much.

In my opinion, it is not possible to enjoy The Golden Road unless you have just recently read The Story Girl. Not all of the characters and actions in TGR will be understoon unless you have read TSG. The characters are a lot of fun and are well-written. The adventures this group of friends have together will stay in your memory forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Two books I have read over and over....
The Golden Road and its prequel, The Story Girl, are two of the best books I have ever read. I never seem to get tired of them, either...I have read them countless times! If you enjoy L. M. Montgomery's novels, such as the Anne of Green Gables series, these books are a must. The Golden Road tells the story of cousins, Beverley (who narrates the story), Felix, Cecily, Felicity, Dan, and Sara Stanley, also known as the Story Girl, plus their friends Peter, the hired boy, and Sara Ray. The adventures these eight have are sometimes exiting, sometimes sad...but mostly really funny! For instance, one time, they have the governors wife to tea...but they think she's their deaf Aunt Eliza and comment on the governors big nose and such things! And Felicity accidentally bakes tooth-powder rusks...oh, I can't tell you the whole book! Read it for yourself!

4-0 out of 5 stars So beautiful
I loved this book. I read the Story Girl years ago, but the 'Road to Avonlea' books ruined the concept for me, and I forgot that there was an original sequel. And then, my sister borrowed it from the library; I was bored, and so picked it up. I read the entire book that afternoon - forget about the fact that exams were six weeks off, that I should be vaccuuming - I couldn't put it down. I admit, I had cherished hopes of the Story Girl and Bev, but they were dashed. Felicity and Peter, I am sure, were happy for the rest of their lives....and I was crying so hard when I read about Cecily. I loved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Captures children and childhood in a sweet, true light
Despite the long-ago nature of the story, children like Beverley, Felix, The Story Girl, Felicity, Dan, Cecily, Peter and Sara Ray live today. Montgomery treats children - and their points of view - with respect. She shows their virtues, faults, triumphs and follies in an honest light - sometimes poignant, sometimes funny. She also captures that magical betwixt-and-between time that the Story Girl and Beverley are approaching, as they begin to move away from childhood. The ending is sweet and sad at the same time. ...
