Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle has been wildly popular with children and adults for over 50 years. Children adore her because she understands them--and because her upside-down house is always filled with the smell of freshly baked cookies, and her backyard with buried treasure. Grownups love her because her magical common sense solutions to children's problems succeed when their own cajoling and yelling don't. For the child who refuses to bathe, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle recommends letting her be. Wait until the dirt on her body has accumulated to half an inch, then scatter radish seeds on her arms and head. When the plants start sprouting, the nonbather is guaranteed to change her mind about that bath.

Hilary Knight's (Eloise, Sunday Morning) delightful pictures provide lively, droll accompaniment to Betty MacDonald's refreshing stories. Whether Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle is curing Answer-Backers or Slow-Eater-Tiny-Bite-Takers, her remedies always work like a charm. More than one parent over the years has surreptitiously turned to Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle when Dr. Spock failed to come through. (Ages 8 to 12) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This series inspired the love of reading in me.
My mother read these books to me as a child. Every night my brother and I would listen to fantastic tales of a woman who lived in an upsidedown house and taught naughty children lessons in genlte, understanding and creative ways. I can say without a doubt that my love for Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle fostered my love for books. Definately a book to share with the children you love.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Wonderful for all Ages!
Since I was in 3rd grade I read all of of the Mrs.Piggle Wiggle books and I think they are all wonderful for everybody to read. I have little cousins and siblings and I love to read them Mrs.Piggle Wiggle books, and they love them. I think her cures are very funny, cute, and some can be used in real-life if you would like! But all I can say is that I think and most people will agree with me that all Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books are the best!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite book as a child
I wanted to live in Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's house as a child. This is one of the best children's books ever.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book for All Children
I first read these books when I was young. While some of the themes may at first seem outdated for todays generation, the lessons that these books teach span all ages and cultures. Every parent has had a situation with one of their children that resembles one of these stories. Children can get a laugh out of the lighthearted humor, and still learn valuable lessons about their behavior and about right etiquette.

5-0 out of 5 stars If Only Problems Went Away This Easily
Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle is the neighbor everyone wishes they had. She's the widow of a pirate, lives in an upside down house, and is always ready for a tea party with freshly baked cookies. She's such an expert on kids that parents have started calling on her wisdom to cure their kids when they start misbehaving. And whether it's making chores into a game or getting kids to take a bath, she's sure to have the answer to make everyone happy again.

I loved these books as a kid, and this book is just as fun now. The stories fall into a predictable pattern, but that hardly diminishes their enjoyment. Each chapter is a self-contained story, so it's easy to read just a little bit at a time. Unlike other books in the series that feature magic cures, these stories feature what I recognize now as psychology to cure the kids. The humor comes from the exaggeration of the problem and what the child goes through to get "cured." For example, the parent's fighting in the "Fighter Quarrelers Cure" or the tiny dishes in the "Slow Eater Tiny Bite Taker Cure." Heck, by the time the "Never Want to go to Bedders" are cured, they are actually begging to go to bed at their normal bedtime.

Reading the book as an adult, I got a few good laughs out of the names of the parent's friends. I also found it interesting that very few of the adults have an identity apart from their kids. Then again, as a kid's novel, it presents a kid's eye view of the world. I hope these books continue to entertain for years to come. ... Read more

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle has a trick up her sleeve

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle loves everyone, and everyone loves her right back. The children love her because she is lots of fun. Their parents love her because she can cure children of absolutely any bad habit. The treatment are unusual, but they work! Who better than a pig, for instance, to teach a piggy little boy table manners? And what better way to cure the rainy-day "waddle-I-do's" than hunt for a pirate treasure in Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's upside-down house?

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's Magic

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's Magic is about an old widow named Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle who has cures for everything! For example: The Interrupters Cure, The Tattletales Cure, and The Never-Want-to-Go-to-Schooler Cure. One time Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle had to use her magic on a boy named Christopher. Christopher had the worst table manners in the world! Christopher's mom called Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle to see if she could help. Well, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle had a pig named Lester who had the best manners is the world! So Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle let Mrs. Brown keep Lester for a week. Lester taught Christopher the best table manners in the world! I'm 10 years old and I don't like to read books, but I loved this book! (Parents would too)!

5-0 out of 5 stars All time family favorite!
Have I read these books to *MY* son? YOU BET!

My two elder sisters, younger brother and I grew up on Mrs. Piggle Wiggle's Magic - the edition that HAD belonged to our uncle!

The "ills" the children have are the same the world over. The lessons are clear, and taught gently - Be careful what you wish for, it might come true! Slow down, watch what you're doing. Do not interrupt. There are certain behaviors expected in public. And so on.

My mother would "threaten" us during the school year - "Oh dear. I'd better get out Mrs. Piggle Wiggle's Tattle Tale Cure." she would say, distressed. Or "Now where did I put that 'Never Want To Go To Schooler's Cure'?" We would laugh, the message clear.

My family has turned out just fine, in spite of the "negative message" some claim it contains - we four siblings now are now a doctor, an architect, a softward engineer, and a systems analyst. The uncle from whom we inherited the book has just retired as a surgeon. The book has long disintegrated from being overly loved. I was ecstatic to find it had been re-published!

To those who "don't get it", I'm sorry your life is do devoid of a sense of humor. I'd recommend you also avoid such sinister authors as Maurice Sendak, Robert McCloskey, Lewis Carroll....

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this!
This is the last of the four Mrs Piggle-Wiggle books, but it was probably my favourite when I was little - I loved horses as a little girl, and these stories include a pony. My parents read the Mrs Piggle-Wiggle books when they were kids, and these books have been a family tradition.

The stories aren't coy about the fact that they set out to show how kids ought to behave, but they're so much fun that I don't think anyone minds that they teach a lesson. After all, who minds when Mrs. Piggle Wiggle is the teacher? These stories, unlike those in the other 3 books, are set on a farm, and teach kids about responsibilty, self-reliance, and trust. Read them if you have kids, read them if you don't have kids. Just read them!

5-0 out of 5 stars A children's classic
I grew up reading the Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle series. I loved every single story and I still remember them vividly. They may be a little dated but the lessons are still current and they are still very amusing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book. I'm ordering them for my daughter!
I remember sitting in the library when I was little reading Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books over and over again. I loved everyone one of her "cures" and now that I have a daughter of my own I want her to have her own copies of these classics from my childhood. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars memories of my childhood
I love the Piggle-Wiggle books! I was first introduced to the seres when my third grade teacher read them to the class. I have enjoyed reading them to my own students since then...Children love hearing about the different tales and adventures of the children who are friends of Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle! The stories come alive for all people who hear these stories because it's so easy to relate to. I think we all can remember a time when we had trouble interrupting or not cleaning up after ourselves!!!! These stories are a true treasure!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mrs. Piggle Wiggle Magic
I am 35 years old and can still remember my mother reading us these story every night. No matter how many times we heard them over and over it was the best time we spent together. I now have a daugter of my own and can't wait to read the same storys to her. I loved all the funny things she would do the kids to get them to listen to their parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Funny
I have read this tory to students in my class ranging from kindergartners to third graders. All of my students have enjoyed the story and went on to read the other titles as well. The humor used in the book is very good. Children can relate to some of the problems Miss Piggly Wiggly cures. We even used her humor in class as we decided how some of our personalities fit with the children's in the story. I would highly recommend this story as a read aloud for younger children or independent reading for third grade and higher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful And Funny
This is a delightful and funny book for children. I read it a few years ago and thought to myself, this is a funny book, but adults shouldn't really read it because they might not like it like me. It's childish humor about an old lady who likes children. Buy this for your children.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute, humorous, but dated
I read the Ms. Piggle-Wiggle books in second & third grade & enjoyed them, but now as an adult & writer, I leafed through the books again recently & find them to be unrealistic & dated. You can tell the books are set WAY back in the olden days(1950's) where people were more ignorant in general & wanted to fantasize about "perfect" traditional WASP families where all the Mommies were happy housewives who never held a job & all the Daddies rushed off to work five mornings a week & divorce, sex, peer pressure, & poverty are unheard of. The magic parts are appealing to kids of any era. But then that magic was played out in the conservative fantasy of having the children cured of faults, creating "perfect" children who gave parents no trouble. Especially troubling is the story about the "crybaby". In the end when the girl was cured of crying so much, she promised her parents, "I'm never going to cry again. No matter what happens." That might give a wrong message to highly sensitive kids who cry easily. Mary Anne Spier of the BSC series & the biggest crier in Stoneybrook, Connecticut was lucky not to be around back then! So...parents: before you read these with your kids make sure they understand that these stories are influenced by the suburbia feminine mystique fantasies that plagued most of the US in the fifties. Another word of warning: spanking is presented as acceptable in these books. The books could be used as a catalyst of discussion in classrooms & families about how people idealized how life "should" be...then & today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great shortened version of an old classic
This is one of the funniest stories about Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle. What is a parent to do when your child does not want to take a bath? Why let them stay dirty-so dirty in fact that one can plant seeds on them. Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle tells the frusterated parents to plant radish seeds on their dirt-encrusted daughter. Magically the seeds grow over-night to the astonishment of the little girl. After submitting to a bath she enjoys the radishes that she grew. A hilarious take on the old You-Can't-Make-Me rountine. ... Read more
