2-0 out of 5 stars A litttle Spanish as well
The layout of this book is great-the pictures come from the English language "My First ____ Board" Book series.
However, pages 36-37, 40-41, 44-45, and 48 of my book are completely in Spanish. Had I not taken both French and Spanish the difference might have escaped me. I assume that people buying this book for their children are going to notice the problem--just thought it was worth a mention. ...

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellente!!!
My daughter and I loved sharing this book together. She already knows most of her animals in French, and now we are working on the parts of the body. Fun time for both of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Très magnifique!
This is a terrific toddler French word book. We have the "My First Word Book" which is a nice compliment to the French version. My daughter (2 1/2) really enjoys the colorful pictures and likes to practice in both French and English. It's also a great learning tool for us! My only wish.. that the book was more portable for carrying in a purse or daybag for travel like many of the other "First" books. We all love the "My First..." series by DK Publishing.

5-0 out of 5 stars oo-la-la...Engaging word book for toddlers and preschoolers
My 18 month old son loves paging through this book and pointing to the eye-catching photos as we pronounce the words in French and English. My husband is advancing his study of French and has found this to be a wonderful book to share his love of the language with our son.

The photos are crisp and engaging, and span a wide variety of topics. I have also given the Spanish version of this book to a friend's two year old, who loves to read it with his babysitter daily. I find that it not only allows my child to hear another language, it simply provides for object identification that I might not have been as clear about without the visual aids. It's just a joy to read this with my child. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Error-filled
As other reviewers have noted, there are problems with this book, despite its laudable intent. In short, it is doubtful that the author speaks fluent Spanish herself, and it seems as if she simply opened a Spanish-English dictionary to create the book.

For example, for 'azul/blue' she displays a fish, which she calls a "pescado." As any second-year Spanish student can tell you, the animal is a 'pez' whereas prepared food is called 'pescado' (literally, "that which has been fished"). Also, on the back cover she writes "¡Recolecte todos los libres en la serie!" (Collect all the books in the series). The verb "recolectar" means "to gather", not "to collect" as in a collection (she needed to use "coleccionar")

As a Spanish professor, I commend her good intentions with this book, but I cannot recommend this book until the errors are corrected.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great way to teach colors in English & Spanish
At first, I resisted purchasing books from this series because I wanted an actual picture of whatever was being described, like in the "My First Board Book" series by DK Publishing. However, I believe that "Mis Colores" is an excellent way to teach colors, and succeeds in one place where the Board Book Series (and some others) fail. I do not like when colors and shapes are combined, for example, "red square."

In regards to another reviewer's comments, my understanding of Spanish is that the article is placed before the noun, so "el pescado" is correct and just "pescado" is not. This is also another detail that I have noticed many bilingual board books lack.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great series for early language acquisition
I have been using this entire series with my son since he was born, and he is now 14 months. He loves the pictures and turning the pages. The books use the format of one word per page and it gives both the English and Spanish form of the word. This is a great series for early language acquisition.

I am a bilingual Spanish/English speaker. My ethnic background is Cuban and Mexican. It is quite correct to use the article in front of the Spanish version of the word and not the English for one simple reason. English words are all gender neutral, while Spanish words all have gender, which the article helps you identify. The color spelling also changes based on gender, so you must know the gender in order to know how to say the color. For example, la manzana es roja, even though the color is rojo.

Also, cafe and marron are both correct for brown.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable little book
I LOVE this book. So does my 1-year old. He has self full of books and always wants this one. I think it's the colors, pictures and overall size of the book. It is important to me for him to learn some key Spanish words--that is why I got this book. Not to TEACH him the entire language.

P.S.
I've always heard of brown being called "cafe" in Spanish...

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, But Needs a Better Translator
We purchased 3 in this series of books because we are trying to raise a bilingual child. Overall, I must commend the books. The colors are brilliant, the images full and fun for our child (she's been enjoying the books since she was 6 months old and is now a year old). I also am happy that the book has board pages. I have, however, two complaints regarding the translation. 1)The book introduces animals in English as fish, but in Spanish as "el pescado." I see no reason to put the word "the" in front of the Spanish but not in front of the English (either "the fish" and "el pescado" or just "fish" and "pescado." This is done throughout the book. Another problem, for me at least, is that the book gets the Spanish word for the color brown wrong. It says "cafe" is Spanish for brown - well the only thing I have heard Spanish speakers call "cafe" is coffee! Just to see if that has to do with the fact that I do not know persons from all Spanish speaking nations (but I do know Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Ecuadorians, Argentinians, Panamanians, Columbians, Peruvians, and Spanish) I looked it up in a Larousse Grand Dictionary. For the color brown the following Spanish words are offered: "carmelita," "marron," "castano" (which means brunette). The sole definition under "cafe" is coffee. A book that presents itself as a learning tool should not make an error like this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent juvenile reference book!
After my 1st grade daughter received her first "research" assignment, we searched through Books-A-Million, WaldenBooks, and Borders, and finally came across this series. Wonderfully written, colorful and full of great information! I am buying the other 3 titles in this series for her library (Spain, Germany and France). Barron's would be foolish if they didn't attempt to expand on this series with other titles; it could be easily sold to many schools that are truly interested in valuable education

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific resource for primary grade students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnifico!
Excellent resourses for easily learning Spanish through colorful illistrations. Toddlers and older kids can benefit greatly from this book. As far as bilingual books go, this one and Drum, Chavi, Drum!/Toca, Chavi, Toca! are the ones that my children love most. When kids love a book and can't put it down, that's a great sign that they will learn Spanish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for ALL Ages!
I used this book to help my daughter learn a multitude of words in English and ASL signs when she was *very* young. Now that she's a preschooler, we're looking at it again from the Spanish perspective. And even though I am fluent in Spanish, I learned a *lot* of very specific vocaublary from this book (the names of all different kinds of vehicles and tools, for instance). I would recommend this book not only for parents of very young children, but also for students of the Spanish language of *any* age, as a vocabulary builder. If I were teaching a high school language class, I would want to copy pages out of this book, blank out the names, and challenge students to label each picture. What a great resource!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures!
Nice photos, not cheaply put together. Very clear.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!
This is a wonderfully colorful and fun book. My newborn is going to love learning Spanish with this book, so will I! The photographs are of real things -- not drawings, so children can relate directly to the words and pictures. It is a large and sturdy hardcover so it will withstand tiny fingers turning from page to page. If you buy only one book to introduce the language to your youngster, make it this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for toddlers
This book has been my 2 year old daughter's favorite book for the last six months. The pictures are engaging, and grouped in categories that make sense.

She's spent hours reviewing this large, well-made book. She's progressed from being able to point to photos of things when asked, to saying the names of them herself, or asking what the photo is. I've learned a lot of Spanish as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Platero
This translation of Platero and I is the only "complete" translation into English of the Spanish Classic. It is also the most Spanish! This refers to the paperback edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Return to Simplicity
This is a beautiful little book by a Nobel Prize Winner of Literature that is too often neglected, Juan Ramon Jimenez.

Only Jimenez could make the blood of a leach in a stream of water into beautiful imagery. Children read this book as part of their curriculum in Argentina, however, this book can be equally enjoyed and appreciated by adults.

The story is a simple one: it is a first person (semi-autobiographical) account of a poet and his donkey in the mountains of Spain, appreciating, almost Zen-like, the simple beauties of life. The elements, children playing, leaches bleeding in a pool, everything seems beautiful in this book, and the descriptions are exquisite.

This is probably the best introduction to Jimenez, a book not to be missed!

5-0 out of 5 stars sencillez y belleza
Platero y yo es un libro tierno y sencillo que cuenta la relacion de un borrico y su amo. Yo lo recomiendo a todo aquel que quiera aprender espanol con esta pequena historia llena de poesia.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic for any age!!!!!
Having first read this book while I was in elementary school, it has been the book that I have rated as one of my favorites all my life (in my 40's). Simple words convey volumes of meaning - very little is written to say so much about peace, love and death. Focus is on what is meaningful in life. Whenever I pick up my volume and read a couple of passages, I realize where my priorities are. Would love to find the complete volume with all the passages. The age limit should be removed - it may keep older readers from experiencing life with Platero.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet, captivating! A beautiful story about friendship!
A sweet story about Platero (the donkey) and his owner. The descriptive language is so rich and beautiful that this book is used in Argentina's Grammar schools to teach about 'descriptive writing style'. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good
I used this book in my french class and I thought it was great practice and very helpful, but yeah, be warned -- this is just the student copy WITHOUT the tapes or the answers so pretty useless it's used in a classroom setting.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
This book is simply a question book. In order to use it properly you need the audio cassettes and the the teacher's guide( to check your answers!) which is impossible to purchase unless you are a teacher. It makes no sense why it is sold on it's own. A complete waste of money........

1-0 out of 5 stars No answers + no tapes or CDs = Useless
I ordered this book after reading the 5 star review, and upon receiving it realized that it is a STUDENT edition, with NO ANSWERS and NO tapes or CDs (or even a written script) for the listening sections! Without answers and tapes, it is useless as an AP study guide! The Amazon description of the book should state this, so other people don't waste their time ordering it. I couldn't find the missing items on Amazon, so I searched the web until I found the teacher guide ($16.97) and tapes ($49.97) on the Prentice Hall webpage.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book succeeds where some others fail
I appreciate this book as well as the "My Colors" book by the same author because they take the time to seperate shapes and colors. In some series, the two are combined and I feel that they should be taught seperately.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfection / La perfección
What a delight to find a rhyming book that emerges from translation as captivating as the original! This lovely book with cut-paper illustrations has entranced children as young as two years old, who delight in imitating the bird sounds and following along to call out "tilín, tilín" as the cat's bell warns off the birds he wants so much to catch. I fell in love with the book in English, but I consider the Spanish version a hallmark of translation at its finest. No one with whom I have shared either version has escaped its spell.

... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for adoptive parents of Russian children!
This picture book was great because we could look at it together with our Russian son. He helped us pronounce the words in Russian as we taught him the words in English. I highly recommend it for parents going to Russia to adopt. Very comprehensive. Great illustrations. (I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 only because it was lacking accents in the pronunciation guide; hence I didn't know which syllable to accent for best pronunciation. I would recommend that the next edition show which syllable is accented; then it would certainly merit 5 stars!)

3-0 out of 5 stars two major shortcomings
As a beginning student of Russian I thought this book might be a good vocabulary builder, and for the most part that is true. The illustrations aren't always sufficient to identify the word depicted, but there is an English translation in the back so that's only a minor annoyance. Another minor annoyance is that words are given in either singular or plural form, whereas it would have been nice if both were included.

However, I found two major shortcomings relating to pronunciation. One that has been mentioned in the other reviews is the lack of anything indicating stress, which could easily have been done with either accent marks on the word itself or by capitalizing the accented syllable in the phonetic rendering (PEESma).

The other major shortcoming is that certain vagaries of pronunciation aren't taken into account, such as the devoicing of a consonant at the end of a word (e.g. the word for iron would be more correctly rendered as "ootyook" rather than "ootyoog") and the assimilation of consonants when they occur together ("foodbol" rather than "footbol").

I still would recommend this book but I also recommend getting a good dictionary that shows word stress and making sure you learn the rules of pronunciation and take them into account.

2-0 out of 5 stars I Didn't Buy the Book Because...
...the words are not stressed. For beginners who don't have a native Russian speaker around to pronounce the words for them, it is absolutely essential that each word show the vowel that is stressed. Normally, in textbooks for beginning Russian students, this is done by placing a stress mark over the stressed vowel. Unfortunately, this book does not do that. Like English, Russian words are pronounced quite differently depending on the placement of the primary stress. The reader of this book will not know, for example, how the word "aftobus" ("bus" in English) should be pronounced: AHf-to-boos, ahf-TO-boos, or ahf-to-BOOS. The correct pronunciation is ahf-TO-boos. No doubt most American speakers, analogizing from "automobile" (AW-tuh-muh-beel), would pronounce it AHf-to-boos. And is the word for "watch" pronounced "CHAH-see" or "chih-SEE"? The latter is closer to the correct pronunciation. But without a sress mark to show this, how is one to know? In addition, in conversation most speakers of Russian nowadays pronounce the consonant "shch" not as sh + ch (as in "freSH CHeese"), but as a fronted "shsh" (as in "I wiSH SHe wouldn't do that"). Although the concept of the dictionary is good, because of the lack of stress marks I don't think it's worth buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful
Finally a language book that teaches practical vocabulary that isn't always found in the textbooks.

With large comic book style pages, vocabulary items are depicted in a color drawing that covers most of the page. On the page borders are small individual depictions of the vocabulary items with the name beneath it in Russian, there are no English translations (except in the glossary) because none are ever needed.

For example; the first page shows a color drawing of various rooms in a house. One room is the bath. The border of the page will have a picture of a toilet and its name beneath in Russian, then it is shown in the context of the bathroom without a label so the reader can self quiz.

An excellent resource!, good for beginner to intermediate level readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Illustrations, Keeps Attention!
My husband is a native Russian speaker and speaks only this language to our 2 yr. old. This book has ended up being our son's FAVORITE book. He loves the illustrations (so do I) and will look at one page for a good 10 minutes. I helps me brush up on my Russian also.
I must add, however, that if you are a BEGINNER to the Russian language this book won't teach you how to correctly pronounce the words. Words are spelled out phoenetically but do not include any clues as to pronunciation. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars a missing ingredient
This is a delightful story but I'm concerned that kids miss the point that an overdose of sugar is the problem. Kids do think in concrete terms. If all sugar is bad, why do my parents let me have any sugar? Do my parents want me to do things that are bad for me? Again, the answer is the balance not that all sugar is bad. Fruits and many other healthy food have natural sugar in them. I am a diabetic and I'm very aware of the problems of too much sugar. If an appropriate discussion follows the book, I think it is a good book and I agree with other reviewers. Using this book is like using sugar: do it carefully.

4-0 out of 5 stars Divertido!
I read this story to a second grade bilingual class who just loved the story and were able to understand the message of the story. When I read it to a sixth grade bilingual class using puppets, It was just as enjoyable tothe older children.Since it is in Spanish and English, the whole classwas able to enjoy the story and learn what temptation can do to them.Irecommend this book to anyone teaching a bilingual class or learning eitherlanguage.

4-0 out of 5 stars Supa-creepy
I first read this book years back at the library with two children I was babysitting for the summer. We read it and laughed in bemused horror.

The book chronicles the tale of two children lured to a magical wagonowned by a Mr. Sugar. His friendly countenance and gentle words urge themto try one of his confections, and thus begins the downward spiral intoserious sugar addiction.

They become severely obese, jump up on theschool roof, run backwards, and fall asleep in class. What have we toblame? That cursed sugar.

A surprise twist in the end pulls no punches, and teaches children with heavy-handed propaganda that sugar is bad.Verybad.

At once amusing and freaky-deaky, I've recommended this to peoplelearning Spanish (for its bilingual aspect) and people interested in theweird and unusual.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantasitic and philisophical literary work.
Mr. Sugar came to town is the fantastic, yet somewhat terrifying story of two children; manipulated by the powers of temptation. Seemingly idiotic, this book explores psychological concepts that are usually incomprehecableto young readers. Furthermore, this is a bilingual book, therefore, children who's native tounge is English, have the opperatunity to learn alimited, yet useful Spanish vocabulary. This works in the opposite way aswell.I recommend this book to all people, who speak either English,Spanish, or both. It is a wonderful tale for people of all ages. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book
Thank you for publishing the, usborne language guides for beginners books and audio series. I am excited about learning other languages and have chosen the French for beginners as my stepping stone to success. We have found the contents though simple and basic to be useful which once understood and practised would provide the fundamental foundation needed. However there is one thing I would like to bring to your attention, and that is the ladies voice on the audio cassette is hardly audible, hampering our ability to gain the maximum satisfaction from this otherwise good product. My prayer is that the information provided will be of assistance to you. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An important achievement in Cuban literature
"Simple Verses" is a collection of poems by Jose Marti (1853-1895), the 19th century Cuban poet and revolutionary who spent many years in exile in the United States. This is a bilingual edition, with the Spanish originals and English versions on facing pages. The translation into English is by Manuel A. Tellechea. Tellechea also contributes an excellent introduction which includes fascinating biographical information about Marti. The poems are untitled; each is assigned a Roman numeral.

Marti writes about romance, nature, family, and other subjects. Many of his poems are political and revolutionary in nature: he condemns Spanish colonial violence in Cuba, expresses his anti-slavery position, and identifies with the oppressed: "With the earth's poor everywhere, / I shall cast my lot" (poem III). In his marriage of poetry with politics and social justice, Marti foreshadows many of Latin America's 20th century poets: Gioconda Belli of Nicaragua, Roberto Sosa of Honduras, Juan Gelman of Argentina, and others, especially especially Pablo Neruda of Chile.

Many of Marti's poems appear to be autobiographical in nature. Some of his poems are dark and macabre in tone, others prophetic and even ecstatic. He sometimes reflects on his own poetic work: "My verse is like a dagger / At whose hilt a flower grows" (poem V). His best work, as interpreted by Tellechea, has a compelling freshness and beauty.

I only found one aspect of the book troublesome. Most of Marti's poems are written in four line stanzas, and in each poem he generally sticks to a constant rhyme scheme from stanza to stanza: ABBA or ABAB. But in his English versions, Tellechea sometimes mixes up the ABBA and ABAB schemes within poems, without any logical pattern and contradictory to Marti's originals; I found these switches very distracting.

Still, this is an excellent volume by a significant figure in Latin American literary history. And the rhyme scheme issue aside, I commend and thank Tellechea for making these "Simple Verses" available in English.

5-0 out of 5 stars A founder of Modernism
Although Marti is known as the apostle of the Cuban revolution against Spain, what is not usually known was that he was a man of great heart and fully committed to what is best in the human spirit. It is not usually known that some Cubans criticized him because while those in the field were spilling their blood on the ground the others, including Marti, were only raising funds and politicking in the safety of the tobacco factories in the US. Marti galloped in his white horse toward the Spanish formations during his first encounter after the landing. He was shot in the heart and died in an act of self inmolation.

Jose Marti was always concerned with the poor, the downtrodden and all cases of inhumanity. He has been accused of communist leanings which is probably correct and was used effectively by Fidel Castro. Many of us who have known him long rather think of him as a Christian Socialist.

Marti left a large body of literature behind him. While in the US he met many of our literary figures and was very active in Journalism. Along with Ruben Dario and a few others he was a precursor of Modernism which discarded previous affected and unnatural poetic forms in favor of simpler direct and concised expressions of something deeply felt. When Marti wrote Versos Sencillos he meant exactly that. Some of his verses found their way into the lyrics of Guantanamera. They have a simple and direct beauty.

5-0 out of 5 stars A New Side of Jose Marti
The thing that struck me about this book is that i always thought of Jose Marti as a sort of revolutionary firebrand. Reading this book, however, I realized what a strong spiritual connection he had with the universe. The poetry is what you would expect from a spiritual teacher like the Dalai Lama. This poetry demonstrates an aspect of Jose Marti's character I never before appreciated. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for independent learning
My middle school students bought this at our school book fair and we sold out twice. My students bring this book to the first day of Spanish class and every day after that even if we don't use it. It gets passed around from student to student as they pour over vocabulary that interests them. They practice it on their own! If you want something that authentically engages young learners, this is it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Spanish that kids really do speak
I stumbled across this book this summer and plan to use it in my 7th & 8th grade beginning Spanish classes during the year. The title page states that it's the Spanish that kids really speak and I agree. The book is set up simply with illustrations that appeal to middle level learners and includes pronunciation examples that are easy to use. (The biggest fear in my students is pronouncing something wrong.) The categories and phrases are of great interest to the age group the book is targeted to. It's a fun book for any age group and I will be using it as a supplement to my regular classroom materials. Teachers - check this out! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great practice!
We use this book in my AP Spanish class. There are tons of pictures, reading passages, and other exercises that match the AP Spanish test. I feel like I'm learning a lot from this book. By itself it would not be very helpful. If you're enrolled in an AP Spanish class and/or using other review materials like Barron's or Princeton Review it should be quite helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Practice
AP Spanish: Preparing for the Language Examination is the book which my class has been using for the past few months in preparing for the AP Spanish test. The book has comprehensive practice for several aspects of the exam, covering many topics. The book appears to be excellent review and great repetitive practice in prearing for the AP exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars El Máximo!
Este libro es extensisimo. En preparando para el examen de AP, no se necesita nada mas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best grammar exercise book - ever.
This book is simply the best Spanish grammar question book that I have ever seen. We used it in AP Span Language class my junior year.. at first assignments in it were dreaded, and most people would get a 50% or less, but as we went through the year, learning more, with these exercises as reinforcement, the constructions, tenses, etc became second nature. The AP test was no problem after this book.. but forgetting that test, and just thinking about this for grammar in general, its great. Touches all categories and formats of questions... good reading selections... high quality in general. I'm actually about to buy a copy for myself, as I've gotten a little rusty in grammar after a long time of pure literature studies. It's just that good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful, although best as a companion
This book is simply wonderful. The only two minor drawbacks I can think of are 1) the audio tapes are quite expensive to get for yourself and 2) to get maximum benefit use as a companion to an AP course, a Barron's book, or something. The excercises are numerous, challenging, and much like the AP exam. It'll take diligence to work through all the excercises, but once you do and take the AP exam in May, the test will seem so familiar, you'll ace it for sure with a 4 or 5. Of course having the answers helps, but those can be obtained by contacting an AP teacher or something. ¡Que tengas éxito con estudiar y repasar para el examen! ... Read more
