4-0 out of 5 stars If you aren't bilingual but would like your child to be....
This series of books is nice because they offer both the English and the French words side by side. My husband reads the English version, and I read the French.

As another reviewer noted, neither the story nor the illustrations are exceptional, but they are nice enough, my 3-year-old likes it, and it allows my non-French-speaking husband to participate,

5-0 out of 5 stars A New Favorite
I have been introducing French to my son since before he was born. He is now 18 months old and this story is one of his favorites (the other is 'I Want My Banana'). The artwork is simple and colorful and the rhythm of the English and French rolls easily off the tongue. I would also like to add that my son's English has not been hampered by a little foreign language here and there.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I had expected
After reading the other readers' reviews of this book I was expecting great things. However, I was dissappointed with the story line, which was merely a listing of a little girl's favorite stuffed toys, but even more dissapointed with the illustrations, which were simple at best. We will read it- but only because of the lack of truly great French materials for young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars C'est magnifique!
My 6 year old was accepted into a French immersion kindergarten class, and these books have been extremely helpful. They reinforce the words he is learning in class and are easy for him to read in French or English, which allows him to boost his reading skills at the same time. The fact that it is in both languages helps me understand what he is reading, too. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellancy in Learning Spanish
Being a bi-lingual teacher, I find that this book diaplays an excellant logical approach to the understanding and teaching of the Spanish language. The foundation in learning Spanish is layed out by the authors. For example: In the lession guide or the teacher's edition, the author shows simply how the course should be taught. First, each student is required to listen to the language and in this case the words in conversation. The teacher is required to speak the lesson. Secondly, each student then learns writing the questions and complete answers that were spoken by the teacher. Then, thirdly, the student is required to recite the lesson. Personally, as a child in a Spanish speaking home, I learned spanish by learning to listen first, then identifying words and lastly reciting what I learned precisely and correctly. For an individual who has no knowledge of Spanish this "Foundation Course in Spanish" will help the student to retain the Spanish Language. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Beginning Book
I got this book some years ago. I used it to name things in some of my pictures, but other than that, It's not very helpful to me. But I used this book for a while. But as I got more advanced in Japanese, the book was opened less. I'd recommend this book with another book or computer program, one that teaches simple sentences and also Hiragana, Katakana, and is you feel up to learning it, Kanji.

5-0 out of 5 stars My First Japanese Dictionary. It Is Fantastic!
My mother is a Japanese and I am a Japanese American. She and I will be using this book to teach my son Japanese. The drawings in this book are very friendly. Kids have fun time reading this book.

We also use this book to teach adult students Japanese. Like the saying "pictures worth thousand words", the grown-ups also find the classes interesting when using material like this one.

One great thing about this book is that Kanji and English are also listed next to each picture. That is a big help for those who are serious about learning how to read and write Japanese...

We highly recommand this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.
This is actually a very well written and illustrated book. The problem is that I am a beginner. This book has hiragana, katakana, and kanji all mixed on the same pages. I am not quite ready for kanji. If you are, the book is perfect. For the true beginner, you may wish to hold off on this book until you learn hiragana and katakana in complete detail!

5-0 out of 5 stars Japanese Picture Dictionary
This book is a necessity for any student of the Japanese language. Hundreds of words each have their own illustrations and most pages have large, beautiful composite drawings great for point 'n' mane practice. The subjects are very diverse and include "The Make-Believe Castle", "The Attic", and "The Mouse Hunt", which list some unusual and fun words. I might just need to say 'fairy princess' while in Japan, or reading manga. The book uses English, romanjij (Japanese words in the Roman alphabet), as well as kana and kanji (Japanese characters) so readers of any skill level can read and use the book. As a beginning student of the language, I found the multiple alphabet format used for each word very helpful. I enjoyed reading and learning from this book very much and I recommend it as an addition to any language student's or child's library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to your library in Spanish
This is a great book for those of us who want to raise our children bilingually and equally wonderful for Spanish-speakers. The Spanish is fun--I also love the repetition of "el día terrible, horrible..." The fact that the names are not translated is fine--not all English names have a Spanish translation and vice-versa. I believe it keeps the integrity of the original version and the Alexander character.

5-0 out of 5 stars ME VOY A AUSTRALIA !
Qué dice un niño al que TODO le sale mal ? "Me voy a Australia !". Los dibujos - en blanco y negro - están espléndidamente ilustrados, la cara de Alexander es indescriptible por su picardía. Un libro para leer y ver con los hijos a la hora de dormir. Un libro alentador, especial para aquellos niños "difíciles"

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Alexander....
Overall, this was an excellent book. It does not differ much from the english version, and it is, as is the english, wonderfully illustrated. It is not perfect, however. I thought that it was well translated into spanish, however, the words are not as easily read and understood as the english version. Also, it was very disappointing to me that the character's names are the traditional, english names, and were not translated into their spanish cognates. That detracts from any feelings of non-ethnicity and partiality that good literature nees.

5-0 out of 5 stars Repetition is the key to learning
Our whole family enjoys reading this book. With its repetition of the "horrible, terrible..." day, we now can all read those parts together. And when the kids have a bad day, we can refer to the book (and talk about going to Australia). It helps to make light of a bad day. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Precioso y divertido / Cute and fun
This book (in English) was one of the favorites of my best friend's little girl for years, and the simple premise of "be careful what you get yourself into" amuses even my grown friends. The story of the mouse who wants a cookie (which requires a glass of milk, which calls for ...) and can't stop there, is a familiar plot presented in a fresh way with fun illustrations. The Spanish translation has a very natural feel.

Este libro (en su versión en inglés) era uno de los favoritos de la hijita de una amiga durante unos años, y su base sencillo de "cuidado de en que te metes" divierte aún a mis amigos ya grandes. El cuento del ratón que quiere galletita (que entonces requirirá un vaso de leche, y por eso un ...) y no se puede quedar con esa, es un argumento conocido, presentado de manera refrescante con dibujos divertidos. 5-0 out of 5 stars To Say Informative Would Be An Injustice
Where should I begin? This book is one of the most in-depth, comprehensive, and helpful Test Prep books I have seen so far. For students of AP Spanish, this book is almost a must as it covers all aspects of the course and gives an endless amount of tips that are sure to be helpful on test day. For those who are hesitant about buying this book and fearing that it will be another dull, inexplicable waste of money, I highly advise that you look at the contents that Amazon.com provides. Grammatical structures are fully covered and there is a huge array of vocabulary that fills almost every chapter to the brim. The authors of this book also include many students' weaknesses and help teach strategies to strengthen skills with many examples. Most importantly, however, is the fact that everything is explained thoroughly and in a manner that everyone can easily understand. Asterisks, underlined phrases, circled words, and bolded information along with tips to the side of the margins easily help focus the reader's attention on what information is crucial to retain. As far as familiarizing the student with the actual test is concerned, the book is filled with 3 practice tests and comes with 2 CDs which cover the speaking and listening portions of the exam. Aside from that, every chapter contains exercises that closely mirror actual test questions in order to further aid students. Overall, this book is almost vital for the average student looking to maximize his or her scores on the AP Spanish test. If reviewed nightly and taken seriously, this book can very well help the anxiety-plagued student who would normally make a 1, make a perfect 5. Very highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun to learn Spanish
As a Spanish teacher I have used this book to teach Spanish to adults. For those with no prior Spanish it can be challenging, but with guidance it can be quite fun and interesting. I especially like its format, with each unit beginning with a short story that contains the lesson's vocabulary and grammatical forms. The story is followed by several pages of a variety of exercises that can be written in the book, and grammar explanations. Each unit is packed with new vocabulary, which takes the learner quite beyond travel phrase books. This is a nice, fat book that really gives the truly motivated a lot to learn. The monotony of typical practice books is broken up with fun illustrations and two colors of ink for the text. For anyone studying without a teacher, I'd recommend contacting the publisher for a teacher's manual in order to obtain the answers to the exercises and check your work.

4-0 out of 5 stars A generally excellent textbook for beginners.
I am a professional tutor of college-level Spanish and use this book with almost all my private beginning students (i.e., those not enrolled in a first-semester college course). They appreciate the book's low price, humor, useful vocabulary, clear grammar explanations, logical organization, extensive cultural information, and the textbook/workbook format: being able to write the answers to the exercises on the lines in the book. Working with this book and a good tutor, the diligent student can get a terrific combination of basic grammar plus considerable practice reading, writing, speaking, and listening, all while having a lot of fun. The book is marred by some typos, but I don't know any foreign-language textbook that isn't -- and I speak four languages. I simply correct the typos for my students as we go along. In sum, it's a very good book for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive and fun
I am not a disciplined person and find it difficult to buckle down and study. With this book, I found myself studying and completing the lessons on my own on a regular basis. The lessons are entertaining and fun too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it, easy and fun
I've tried to learn Spanish about three times and so have three books. I think this is the one to get me over the edge. It's very clear and fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars spanish now!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gathering in the Sun: An Alphabet in Spanish and English
This is a must have for any chicano especially with kids. It is a magnificant piece of art that allows us to talk to our kids and others about our latino heritage in the agricultural fields of America. I bought this book because I am a fan of Simon Silva's art work and this book is like having a selection of his prints to display on the coffee table instead of the wall. It is a great conversational piece as art or history, as a tool to teach our personal heritage or as an educational piece for those of different ethnic backgrounds, and last but not least it is great for young and old. I love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Work of Art
This book is not only a wonderful cultural asset it is very pleaseing to the eyes and the spirit. Children will learn valuable knowledge about the cultures the surround us and not even know they are leaning, beacause of all the beautiful drawings. You will read this again and again. I often use just one page in storytime and it sparks a whole hour of interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars CAPTIVATING!
In this alphabet book, the author combines an alphabetic list of bilingual poems depicting themes of harvest, work, values, and home that both honor and celebrate the lives of migrant farmworkers. The book describes Spanish traditions and the Mexican heritage of the farmworkers with their families while introducing the letters of the alphabet in both English and Spanish. Each poem is presented first in Spanish and then in English. Zubizarreta's English poem on each page is not an exact word for word translation of its Spanish counterpart, but it translates the mood and essence of the original Spanish poem's message. Each Spanish target word describes how the plant, fruit, vegetable, person, or feeling relates to the lives of the workers. The illustrator, Simon Silva uses vibrant paintings portraying their farmlands and lives at work and at home. This alphabet book has great significance, because the poetry gives voice and pride to the experiences of Hispanic agricultural workers. The poems give strong mind pictures by using descriptive words that are attractive and meaningful to the experiences of the farmworkers. This book should be read aloud to a bilingual group of students by a reader who can skillfully use both languages to communicate the moods, otherwise maybe just one language should be read at a time. Adults as well as children will appreciate the poetry and artwork as well as the music that supplements this collection by Suni Paz. She captures the "Hispanic heart" with Spanish guitar music repeating phrases from the Spanish poetry.

5-0 out of 5 stars The colors and mood of the book is earth-embracing.
I found this book to be breath taking in color and content. My childhood came rushing back and many memories. The symbolism in portraying Cesar Chavez and the earth as one was well done. The colors portrayed the warmth of the content. Excellent! ... Read more

Susan Middleton Elya has done it again! "Say Hola! to Spanish" was delight to read - aloud; "Say Hola to Spanish, Otra Vez" does not disappoint! On the contrary, students from kindergarten all the way through grade 8 delighted in Ms. Elya's catchy rhymes and plays on words. If you loved "Say Hola! to Spanish" the first time around, "Otra Vez" delivers... again and again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Beginning Spanish Book for Kids
My four year old daughter would not have anything to do with a Spanish book until I got this one. It's mostly in English, but mixes in over 70 Spanish words in rhyming sentences. The pictures are cute and amusing, which always helps to keep a child's interest. If you are learning Spanish yourself like I am, you'll probably pick up some new vocabulary (juala is cage and tijeras are scissors). But best of all, your child will definitely learn some Spanish. The other day I asked my daughter if she wants to go to the biblioteca and she said, "Oh, the library - sure!".

4-0 out of 5 stars Ingaging and fun to read
I would recommand this book to anyone. It has big issues that can be understood by kids, yet it is still fun to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cultivating Amigos
Friends from the Other Side tells the heart- warming story of two children living on opposite sides of the southern US border who become unlikely friends out of curiosity and circumstance. As the two children become familar with each other, the reader also becomes familiar with cultural differences within the Latino culture itself and with the daily hardships faced by families that live near the border. The book informs and educates the reader about these children's cultural issues by keeping the reader interested in the true to life plot and using realistic culturally significant illustrations. While the story reveals that life is hard for the characters, in the end it remains a story about triumph and friendship. This leaves readers of the same culture with a sense of pride for their heritage and others feeling good after reading the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars good lesson
this book is one of the great book. It teach many lessons to children. One is to teach children to help those who are less fortunate. Futhermore, this book teach children to be brave and made their own decision upon what is right rather than follow the crowd. I think if the book change the character's race like make Prietita a white kid and helping a mexican boy, this book will teach the children another lesson that helping is regardless of race and sex.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Children from Second Grade and Up
I believe that children, when they reach second grade, begin to understand that there are people of differet nationalities in our country. Friends from the Other Side dicussed about the Mexican immigrants and how they strive to find a better life in this country. This story teaches children to appreciate what they have because there are many children who are not as fortunate. It also teaches children to criticize and make fun of others like Joaquin is wrong because they might be going through a difficult time in their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Post Review: Friends from the Other Side
This is a great book for children. It teaches children about tolerance, trust, and about friendship. It teaches a child that just because someone may look, talk, and act different, there is no reason to be afraid or to be mean to them. With the book having detailed illustrations, you feel that you're right there in the story, sharing the adventure and suspense with Prietita and Joaquin. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Historically accurate - wonderful book!
Every culture has their myths, legends and stories which are handed down through the ages with reverence and respect. In this era of commercializing and rewriting every classic that comes along, it is refreshing to find books such as this--that honor the original telling. Not only is the story historically accurate, but the beautiful pictures are as well, and this book is a must for any lover of Chinese history and/or for parents wishing to explain their "roots" to their children. I loved it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great illustrations
My favorite of all the Mulan books available because of the illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book! A genuine treasure for all ages
Each piece of artwork should be framed..thestory (authentic, for a change), is compelling, honest and a "must" for all ages. The Chinese writing accompanying the English is intriguing.I bought several books and sent them all over the globe. I suggest others do the same.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent interpretation with Chinese as well as English.
This is a simple and clear presentation of the story. I'm not familiar with the original poem, so can't say if it is completely accurate to the original. The illustrations seem very Chinese in style, and I really like them. I plan to get more books in this series.

The English is at a level that my 3rd grader can read it by herself, and it has the story, side by side, in simplified Chinese characters (some easy to read typewriter font, not the original calligraphy). The Chinese story is simple enough that kids who are learning Chinese should be able to make headway with it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for teaching Spanish Vocabulary, not a story book
This is a good book for teaching children words in Spanish. It also did help my daughter in general with the concepts of opposites. It is not a story book though. It basically will tell you BIG/GRANDE on one page and SMALL/PEQUENO on the other. If you want a story book, this is not it.If your goal is to help encourage understanding of opposites and some Spanish vocabulary for the 2-4 set, this is a good book. ...
