For those who have always wanted to say things like "Mi madre es una gallina" ("My mother is a hen") or "Los zorrillos huelen mal" ("Skunks smell bad"), this book is the answer to your dreams! After all, who wouldn't want to learn Spanish from the Cat in the Hat? From "The cat runs AHEAD--El gato corre ADELANTE" to "Galloping ZEBRAS--CEBRAS galopando," simple (and occasionally silly) English words and phrases are translated into Spanish, accompanied by the familiar Dr. Seussesque full-color cartoon drawings. For each letter there are several pages of illustrated terms, each separated into a box with a word in English, a picture, a sentence in English with the featured word in uppercase letters, and a translation of the sentence in Spanish, similarly highlighted. An easy pronunciation guide follows the A-through-Z dictionary for anyone who wants to go further and learn to speak as well as read Spanish. This is a tremendously fun and surprisingly useful glimpse into another language that can be used by parents and teachers introducing Spanish to English-speaking children or introducing English to Spanish-speaking children. 5-0 out of 5 stars Educational fun!
We are having so much fun with this book. We bought it for our 5 year old daughter but the whole family is enjoying it. It keeps the fun in learning another language.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
The Seuss Spanish dictionary is a charmer; classic Seuss illustrations are great for the imagination. The fact that this book is educational is a bonus. A child of any age will learn something from it, toddler to college-bound.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids learning Spanish
I recently began teaching Spanish to 4th graders, and they love this book. There's practically a fight for that book when they have the chance to look up words! The illustrations are very appealing, and I like the fact that it gives full sentences; this can really help students who are learning Spanish grammar. Since the book does use full sentences, though, it's important that they begin reading it with someone who has experience in Spanish--this will help them to understand how the sentences are constructed, identify individual words, and recognize conjugated and infinitive verbs. Highly recommended for any elementary students learning Spanish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Treasured Favorite!
An absolute must for your child's library! I just purchased my second copy because my first was over 20 years old and falling apart! It's a fun way to learn basic Spanish vocabulary (not really for grammar) for a child or even an adult. The illustrations are fantastic-very,very cute. Worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing
Believe it or not, our 18 month old son loves this book. As a fluke, I thought that I would check it out of the library so that I could pick up a few Spanish words to teach myself and then him. However, it has become one of his favorite books; he loves the familiar pictures (from other Dr. Seuss/Eastman collaborations) and hearing the words of another language tickles his funny bone..a lot. This book will now be an essential part of our library. ... Read more

A skillful mix of English and Spanish adds a special flair to this lively, rhythmic picture book. It's non-stop fun when eight animal friends-ocho animales-head out to the market to find their supper. There's queso for the mouse, leche for the cat, and much more. And when all of the animals are fed, it's off to the baile to dance the night away! Brought to life with Lee Chapman's bold illustrations, this is a great way to introduce young readers to a new language, as well as a great tool to help Spanish-speakers learn English.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Mommy, read it AGAIN !"
Woo Woo! And away we go to town, with a Spanish lesson on the side. Puerta Vallarta artist Lee Chapman does a wonderful job painting for the "small canvas" of each page. His whimsical style is one that both children and parents will enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular
What a wonderful book for introducing young children to another language. After reading just a few times, my son was started using the Spanish vocabulary in the book. It is particularly brilliant since English is married to the Spanish words such that the meaning of the Spanish words is clear from the context. We love it

5-0 out of 5 stars Your child will be bilingual!!
This is a charming book that your child will love! Our three year old daughter begs us to read it to her each night and enjoys practicing the spanish words in the story. The illustrations in the book are vibrant and fun to look at and the english/spanish translations are not intimidating. After checking it out at the library a few times we decided to make it our own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eight Animals On The Town Is A Festive Frolic
Eight Animals On The Town Is A Festive Frolic for children and adults. "Frog hops along, hungry for flies. 'Moscas,' says Rana, 'economy size.'" You can't help but laugh as the mouse, cat, dog, bird, frog, horse, cow, and pig purchase the ingredients for their feast and later dance the night away. This is one of my son's favorite books. We both love the amusing illustrations - a horse dancing and playing maracas - a bird wearing sneakers riding on the back of a cow - a pig driving a car. The glossary at the back of the book provides english translation and pronunciation for all of the spanish words. Eight Animals On The Town makes learning fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning Spanish is fun!
Susan Middleton Elya has done it again, only better! We enjoyed her first book, Say Hola to Spanish, but this one takes the cake. We learn about eight (ocho) animals (animales) and their trip to the market. The book does an excellent job of using rhyme to tell the story. Each animal is assigned a number and a food item. As they travel to market, we learn the Spanish names for the animals, their number, and the food they choose. The back of the book contains a glossary and a pronunciation guide which was a great help. My 3 year old loves it! We read it over and over and are learning a lot in the process. A must read for anyone wanting to learn simple Spanish words! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of English version
As a Spanish teacher, I have used the English version of this book, _Froggy Gets Dressed_, with my own translations, as a story for the classroom and with a little neighbor. The tale always delights children and in the classroom, it serves as a meaningful and fun way to introduce or review clothing words. (Once students have heard the story, watch them wiggle in anticipation of the moment when Froggy's mother calls out a particularly embarrassing oversight in Froggy's preparations to go play in the snow!) A translation as good as this one is said to be can only enhance the story's value and fun for children. ... Read more

This collection of Latin American nursery rhymes brings together a collection of sweet rhymes that also appear in English. I'm always interested to see how the translator of this work chose to translate the rhymes. Often, the translations are not word for word, so sometimes I feel like I am reading a new rhyme. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Goldilocks
My toddler loves reading "Ricitos de Oro," and now "reads" it to herself using the different voices of the bears. The translation isn't perfect, but it is a nice simple story. As she is getting older, she is curious to hear the story in English and Spanish, so it is nice to have both versions on the same page.

3-0 out of 5 stars Reply to incorrect translation
I just read a review of this book saying that "high" was incorrectly translated to "dura" and "low" to "blanda". I have this book and noticed that the author does not use high and low to describe the chairs in English but uses "hard" and "soft", which are translated correctly to Spanish using the adjectives "dura" and "blanda".

This book retells the classic story with few differences from the classic story many of us grew up with. The illustrations are a little boring and don't stand out.

My 3 year old asks me to read this over and over again. He loves to here the voices of the respective bears Mama, Papa or Baby bear. "High" is translated as "dura". and "low" is translated as "blanda". These translations are both incorrect. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful lesson
Having recently adopted a beautiful toddler from China, we have purchased all the books by this author to start teaching her (and ourselves) a little Chinese. The author has a lovely style of teaching the pictures behind the pictograms. A great book (as are all by this author)!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Book!
This book will allow my Chinese-Vietnamese students to share their writing and culture with other students in my class. It allows me to understand the written Chinese language better myself. Excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for children curious about Chinese writing
By drawing pictures in the sand a mother teachers her young son how to write Chinese characters. This is a marvelous idea, reminding us how thousands of years ago Chinese people took sticks and scratched pictures in the mud, thus inventing the very first Chinese characters. In this book we learn how to draw the characters for the words "person," "big," "small,""sky,""water," "mountain," "sand," "woman," "child" and "good." Through beautiful cut paper illustrations we can easily see the similarities between characters and real life objects. Huy Voun Lee is the talented writer and illustrator of two other books in this series - "In the Park" and "In the Snow." I highly recommend all three.

4-0 out of 5 stars a fun book for kids
Lee, a native of Cambodia, creates a children's book that explains some Chinese language characters, characters that look like what they mean. Xiao Ming and his mother go to the beach, where Xiao Ming likes to draw Chinese characters in the sand with a stick. Xiao Ming and the reader learn 10 characters. One character is introduced per double page. They are drawn and explained, and for each character, the illustration matches the character. "Person", for example (ren/wren), looks like a person walking down a beach, right foot leading one's left. "Big", (da/dah), looks like person but with an additional horizontal line, or a person on his back with outstretched arms and legs (and thus the illustration of a person lying in the sand). Seven other words are learned ending with "Good" (hao/how), which looks remarkably like a mother holding her child at the beach. Mandarin pronunciations are used.
