not just for kids
When I married a German man, my mother gave me this book as a wedding gift. This book was an excellent start on my journey to learning the language. I recommend it for any child or adult who is a beginner to beginner/intermediate in German. By using each word in a funny but grammatically useful sentence, reusing the same words throughout the book, and associating each with a picture that makes it fun and serves as a memory cue, I came out the other side of studying this book with the ability to understand most basic spoken German and to speak a bit myself. And I had fun reading it. Not many dictionaries can claim that.

Its only drawback is that, as with any language book not accompanied by a tape, there's not much help with pronunciation. (My husband read the entire thing out for me onto an audiotape.)

This book is great!
Along with the words are cute cartoons which help the child to visualize the words they are learning. Also there are phrases that uses the words, which helps them to learn sentence structure. An ambitious but well presented book on Chinese writing
There is a lot of information presented in this book. Perhaps too much for young children to absorb unless it is presented to them very slowly and systematically. However children of all ages definitely have a fascination for "secret codes" or "symbols" and their meanings, which is essentially what Chinese writing is to most people. The graphics are large and bold and the text easy to follow, making it an appropriate reference for grade school children. The calligraphy alongside the simple line drawings allow children to easily see the resemblance between real life objects and the Chinese pictographs. I am a teacher and often use this book when giving classroom workshops on Chinese calligraphy. Some of the characters are rather small to see from a distance so I paint larger versions of them on 8X10" cards. Children enjoy looking at the ancient pictographs first and then trying to guess what they mean. After that we try matching the modern characters to the ancient pictographs, which is another fun activity. We always conclude the lesson with trying to write some of the characters using real brushes and ink. This experience brings to life everything that this book so ambitiously tries to present.

A perfect book for those of us struggling to learn Chinese.
Although written to be a children's book, Long Is a Dragon is an excellent tool for adult learners of the Chinese written system. I originally encountered the book while visiting a professional calligrapher. This light hearted, well animated and fairly matter-of-factual book, takes the mystery out of stroke order, character origins and all the complexities of Chinese writing. Very entertaining book for even the youngest baby
I started reading this book to my son when he was about 8 weeks old. He's 8- months now and we read it nearly everyday. No matter how fussy or distracted he may be, he always stops, looks and smiles when I begin reading this book. He LOVES the animal sounds!

Animal sounds
My son has loved this book since we bought it at around age one, to now almost 3. He liked making the noises that the animals say when he was young, now he tries to memorize the short rhymes and "read" the book himself. It is one of the best of this small red puppy series. Consider getting the plush puppy - I haven't seen him anywhere else and my son LOVES him (and he has held up well too!)

Great First Book!
My daughter loved this book and she could make all the animal sounds by the time she was 16 months old. Now my son wants me to read it to him at least 5 times a sitting and he says bow-wow at the end. (He is 14 months old) I will get him the other 3 in this series for Christmas.

Simple, engaging pictures, cute examples, facinate 9 mo. old
This was a surprise hit with our (then) 8-month-old. Still a favorite at one year. (He turns the pages, I read.) The pictures are very simple but engaging. The example sentences are loaded with the letter being demonstrated- ("Tomas toma te.") and each page includes additional vocabulary ("Can you find..."). He will gladly page through "Albertina..." when he hasn't the patience for "Dr. Seuss's ABC".

The 29 letters covered include "ll", "n~" and "rr", as well as "w" which a note explains is not actually needed for Spanish, but used for foriegn words, such as William.

Probably works in English too, and the English translation is provided on the right-hand side of each page. I rate it 9 out of 10 because of the simplicity of the art- not stylish, just simple. Paper or felt cut-outs. The text is a 10. Recomended! ... Read more

I like the book. I am learning Spanish with the little boy I look after and this book is helping us. We know the story in English, and now we are learning it in Spanish. I like it better when we have two separate books - one in English and one in Spanish then when we have one book with both languages, because it then we don't "cheat" and look at the English. It also lets us have a small amount of "immersion" time when we only speak the new language - even if it's only for 5 or 10 min.

What is this??
I would not recommend this book to any child. After reading it several times I still don't get it. It's like it's written in another language! The author should learn how to speak proper english before writing a book.

It is a heart warming tale that is wonderful for any age.
I think that it is wonderful to have this book in spanish. I loved the pictures and the tale was one that expressed the love of a mother for a child. Another good book, also by Margaret Wise Brown, is Goodnight Moon (Buenas Noches, Luna). Both books feature the wonderful charaters of rabbits in personified situations. ... Read more

Angel's Kite/La Estrella de Angel
Since Alberto Blanco and Rodolfo Morales are so popular I feel almost sacrilegious saying this was not my favorite book, but it is a good one. It deserves more than a 4, but maybe not a 5. Why? Because the text is wordy and would lose most kids I know. And the art is not my type of art, but art is so personal. The story is about Angel who is sad that his town's church bell has disappeared, and how he gets it back for the people.
