5-0 out of 5 stars Classic, perfect for the Muppet enthusiast!
If you can get your hands on this book - DO SO! I grew up watching the Muppets and this book gave me the opportunity to dive back into my childhood and relive the fascination and excitement. I felt like I stepped backstage and experienced every moment like I was there, listening and watching what was going on. I believe this is because the book was written while the show was still in production, rather than years later. I learned how Miss Piggy became a karate expert as well as the Muppets anatomy and the antics, conversations and work that went on behind the scenes. Even if you never read the book, it's filled with color and black and white photos that are fun to look at! There's a picture of every guest star for 5 seasons. Remember when Star Wars hosted the show? I highly recommend this book for those of you who wish to see the magic and phenomenon behind the Muppets Show. ... Read more

Book Description

Science fiction and fantasy authors analyze every aspect of the innovative, action-packed, and always surprising science fiction television series Farscape in this innovative and irreverent essay collection. Contributors include Martha Wells on characters Crichton and D'Argo's buddy relationship, P. N. Elrod on the villains she loves to hate, and Justina Robson on sex, pleasure, and feminism. Topics range from a look at how Moya was designed and an examination of vulgarity and bodily functions to a tourist's budget guide to the Farscape universe and an expert's advice to the peacekeepers who, despite their viciousness, never quite seem to pull it off. Fun, accessible, entertaining, and insightful, these musings will appeal to every admirer of this intriguing television series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Say it again.
Buy this book only if you love the silly little sayings that make your children laugh because the wonderful rhymes in this book will definitely be repeated over & over & over & over. My three year old's favorite is "Take off your Socks, Mr. Fox." and we hear it almost every time he changes clothes. It is a very simple book and very funny. We usually save it for the last story of the night because it is so short.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most fun book to read on the shelf!
You'll find yourself saying "See you later Alligator" to all your work collegues and making up new rhymes with your child.

You don't need the hand puppet for this to be a fun book, so a used copy is a good bet!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Anytime Book
I used to read this book to my son every night about 20 times. He loved it - we used the Fred puppet to tickle him. I now use it for my daughter. It teaches about rhyming, different animals, brushing teeth, bathing and just going to bed. My son even likes to read it to my daughter. I recommend this to anyone with children 15 months to 3 years of age!

5-0 out of 5 stars Go To Bed Fred
This is a cute story about getting ready for bed. You can use the puppet to participate with kids. The puppet is of good quality and the book is relaxing fun! The best part of the book is that it is long enough to be entertaining, but short enough that mom doesn't have to be up all night reading it! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars opposite effect
my child is now proud of wearing diapers. the first line in the book is --Do you wear diapers?-- my kid laughs and says yes and pats his diaper. He doesn't relate to her dislike of diaper rash or having to sit in it when mommy doesn't have time to change it. Also this book talks about diaper pins and tape which is outdated even for cloth diaper users. So this book has had the opposite effect by no error of the writers; I didn't expect that reaction when i bought it! Really is probably a decent book for every other child in the world

5-0 out of 5 stars HELLO POTTY!
MY DAUGHTER LOVES THIS BOOK. IT IS AMONG OUR FAVORITES. THE MUPPET BABY MISS PIGGY TELLS ABOUT HOW SHE USED TO WEAR DIAPERS AND DECIDED TO BE LIKE THE BIG KIDS, SO NOW SHE USES THE POTTY. WE OWN AN EXTENSIVE COLLECTION OF POTTY BOOKS, AND THIS, WHILE BEING ONE OF THE LEAST COSTLY IS ONE OF THE BEST.

5-0 out of 5 stars No more diapers!
This is a cute book featuring the Muppets Miss Piggy. I think maybe a girl would relate to it more. My son is very aware that it is a little girl potty training in this story. It has a very cute rhyme about not wearing diapers that I have adapted for my son.

5-0 out of 5 stars Diapers are Out, Thanks to Muppet Babies, Say Parents
I haven't worn diapers for over 37 years, and this entertaining book has reaffirmed that decision. Diapers are out! Of course, my six month old daughter is heavily into diapers, but that doesn't keep her from enjoying this book as well. She hasn't taken the hint yet, but that's because she doesn't understand any of the words. Still, for the money you can't buy a better little book, and best of all, it stands up to chewing pretty well (for a while, anyway)!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic
I just started reading this book to my two year old daughter two weeks ago and now she is beginning to use the potty for all the right reasons! I recommend this book to any parent! ... Read more

For years the talented folks at the Muppet Workshop have been turning out characters that are adored the world over. And it seems the Muppeteers are also quite adept at making friendship quilts to mark special occasions among their extended family. From this tradition has sprung Quilting with the Muppets, a celebration of Muppet characters and the humans who create them. Each of the 15 quilt block projects features a different Muppet, with brief directions for reproducing it in fusible appliqué. The quintessential furriness and dimension of the puppets read instantly in many of the blocks as shown, made as they are with fake fur and sculpted foam, but since the very basic instructions explain only flat appliqué, some readers may be disappointed. Still, the personalities of Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Oscar, Big Bird, and the rest of the gang shine through clearly even when rendered in simple fabric form, and Muppet enthusiasts will enjoy having good templates of the characters. The book's second half documents about two dozen of the delightful friendship quilts made by the Muppet artists. --Amy Handy ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mother of two toddlers
I bought this book a year ago and finished 2 Sesame Street quilts for my children for Christmas. The book gives a lot of great ideas. I did not use all of the templates that were provided but purchased a kite that had better scale characters to recreate. The stories about the quilts the author made are fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet stories, cute quilts
Who wouldn't love Kermit and Miss Piggy? But the real surprise was the charming quilts and the stories that went with them. Not only does this book have simple designs that you can use, it is filled with a series of quilts that the staff of the Henson company has made over the years. They are not quilters, but they are certainly artists who know their way around a needle. They have creatively mixed traditional blocks with Muppet blocks for a series of Friendship quilts that will open your eyes to the possibilities in that traditional form. Even if you have no children, you will enjoy looking through these pages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Quilting Moms
The quilt blocks in this book are so much fun to make! Experienced quilters can use many different types of fabric to give the quilt dimension, but one-dimensional fabrics work well too. The instructions on applique could have been a bit more detailed, but they are probably enough for firt-time applique'ers. 15 blocks to choose from allows you to make a project of any size.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun book!
While this book does give fabric requirements for individual blocks, it doesn't give those for entire quilts. Looking at the bright side, however, the blocks could be put together in so many different ways that a pattern for a single quilt might be limiting. I enjoyed reading about the friendship quilts made by the Sesame Street people, and the patterns for the blocks are adorable. The instructions were easy to follow, as they use simple fusible appliqué with optional satin stitching (recommended if you're going to wash the finished product). I made one block (Elmo) for a placemat for my grandson, and it turned out so cute that I may have to make an entire set for the family! ... Read more

Book Description

Tucked away in a plain five-story building in Manhattan is a magical place--The Muppet Workshop, where inspired craftspeople combine a diverse array of skills to bring the Muppet world to life. Now The Workshop, along with Stephanie St. Pierre--who grew up making crafts with her friends the Hensons--presents the Muppets Big Book of Crafts, a collection of 100 great projects plus trade secrets.

Filled with full-color photographs and how-to line illustrations, The Muppets Big Book of Crafts is divided into chapters by technique and teaches the basics of drawing, sculpting, sewing, painting, dyeing, woodworking, quilting, puppetry, beading, and more. The results are amazing. A creepy-crawly spider pi-ata filled with baby candy spiders. Elaborate tin can lanterns. A mosaic made of eggshells. Not to mention Groovy Glasses, Suncatcher Bugs, and Awesome Umbrae Scarf, a Wiggly Worm, and Marvelous Maracas. Throughout, tips, advice, and the running commentary of Muppet characters keep the book lively and entertaining. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wocka, wocka, wocka!
I LOVE THIS BOOK! As a more 'mature' muppets fan, I can highly recommend this book, both for it's practical craft suggestions and as a darn fine book to look at. The photos are superb and nearly all my favourite characters were featured. So far, we have only had one failure among our craft attempts. The 'wax paper butterflies' ended up being 'runny crayon blobs' but we still had fun making them! This book will definitely be a keeper long after my kids have outgrown the projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for the kiddies!
I never considered myself a "crafty" person before I got my hands on this book! My roommate got it over a year ago and I had to get my own copy because we soon won't be living together anymore. It is true what the other reviewers have said that there isn't a lot for little kids in this book (though there are at least 20 good things for children) but there are a zillion crafts-for-kids books out there. This book is for EVERYBODY! Really, these projects could be handled by children, but many of them take patience that some children don't have. The projects in this book may take longer than projects in other books, but the end result is probably much better, too. After all, these projects come from the Muppet Workshop, and we all know the Muppets they make are not like ordinary craft puppets. My favorite project in this book is the "Eggshell Mosaic" which involves selecting your favorite drawing/picture (I did Sailor Moon, my friend did Tigger... there is a stencil in the book of Fozzie Bear), making a tracing of this picture onto cardboard, dying eggs the colors you will need to color in your tracing, and gluing the broken colored eggshell pieces into place! It looks like a fancy tile design you might see in a subway station. Everyone who has seen our eggshell mosaics is impressed! All of the projects have easy-to-follow instructions and helpful hints on how you may want to do your project. It is loaded with color photos of examples, and step-by-step drawings. I must have at least ten bookmarks in my copy, all marking projects that I can't wait to do! I can't stress enough what a great book this is. These must be the things Muppet Workshop people do with their children on the weekends. I don't have kids yet, but when I do, I am sure we will wear this book out until it is ragged.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Muppets!
This is a great kids' craft book. The projects are colorful and substantial. The instructions are meticulously presented. Adults will also enjoy doing these crafts! This is a good book...no lame, boring projects here! Nope! This is Muppet quality fun stuff!

Why did I not give this book 5 stars if I like it so much? Well, sometimes I felt the level of difficulty indicators were off a bit. Also, I simply wish there had been more of this book...a thicker book with more ideas. Most crafts would be appropriate only for older children. I wish there were more options for wee ones.

I recommend this book wholeheartedly to homeschooling parents, elementary school teachers, scout leaders, Bible school directors, and the like. Others may want to check it out at the library first to see if it would work with your children. Still, I bet if you bring home a stack of kids' craft books from the library, _The Muppet's Big Book of Crafts_ will be the most creative, colorful, ambitious one in the pile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even I enjoyed it!...
This is one of those craft books that you buy for every child on you shopping list. It's great! My daughter loved it. Even I enjoyed making the easy crafts. Buy it! You will be so satisfied!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Find!
I have a four children and a huge library of children's craft books. There are very few really great children's art books. This is one of them. If you work with children at all, add this to your library, you won't be sorry. This book provides the recipes for many old standby crafts but also offers many inventive and new ways to assemble beautiful works of art. I am a strong proponent of art for children and I believe in projects that produce something the child can be proud of that is long lasting. It is very rare that a children's book is written that has more than two really good projects. Here, they are all wonderful. The section on carving sculptures out of sponges and the muppet recipe for stone is inspiring. I also found this book entertaining with all of the information on muppets scattered throughout the book. It is a great value and a book you will love! ... Read more

This delightful collection of Henson's early drawings, virtually none of which had been published before the original Abrams edition, serves as a map to the boundless imagination of the artist whose characters have educated and enraptured children-and adults-for generations. 5-0 out of 5 stars Spot on Mr Henson..... Spot on!!
Jim Henson was a man who managed to sum up the whole intire feeling of what it was to be young, and full of energy in his fantastic creations. His work, from Mupets to films such as 'Labyrinth' and 'The Dark Crystal', showed us that he could tap that part of our minds that wanted to let go, and be free to live in our fantasies. This book, unlocks the back door to the mind that created our most cherished characters from the Henson world. It shows us where these characters came from, and also gives us an insight to the man who made it all happen. I found this book to be a real Gem, and an adventure. Just seeing the doodles Jim did as a child, or a teen, and some of his non character based art work, was fascinating. Buy this book If you are a fan of Mr hensons work. It is not the most complete book, as far as his other projects go, and some people may wish that some of his film work had got into the book. But for those that like to get closer to their idols, and want to feel like a close friend looking through his old scrapbooks, get this book. You won't be dissapointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jim Henson's Designs and Doodles is the #1 Henson book!
This is a must for all you muppet fans!

The wonderful new long awaited book, Jim Henson's Desings and Doodles is almost a museum on paper. It shows Jim's best artwork, from storyboards, to puppet desingns, even a very early Kermit sketch. The book also features a never before seen look at the never produced special, "Johnny Carson and The Muppet Machine" which was to be a physcedelic trip into the 1960's. The artwork is very detailed, and even has a stone carving of Ed Macmahon! The book also shows some of his early work, including silkscreen images of meloncholy (which was inspired by the death of his brother , Paul) and concert posters and crazy characters who were soon to be Frackles!

One of the best parts of the book is Henson 's early commercial storyboards, which feature the two popular commercial Muppets ,Wilkins and Wontkins, Hansel and Gretel Muppets, and Kermit, The Snerfs and Rowlf (the IDEAL doll ad where Kermit sings the unfamilliar jingle"Oh buy us, oh buy us, oh buy us we beg! If you do not buy us, we'll bite you in the leg!!!) . Early drawings of the La Choy Dragon, and Nutty Bird(Royal Crown soda ads, precursor to Big Bird) are also featured.

The book brings us for the first time many illustrations of show ideas that never made it to the small screen. The Zoocus (The Zoo Circus), The Entertainers, and Martian Landing are all examples shown by illustrations from Jim's fertile imagination. The Zoocus was to be a show full of new Muppets such as Mr. Ripple and Carbourator Jones and had a guest star on each show (Sound like TMS to you?). The show would be a variety but would mostly ,as shown in Henson's drawings,be a talk show with the guest, where the Muppets would lounge behind large alters and other sets. The Entertainer was to be a show about a travelling vaudevillian show where Muppet men (and a can can girl) would sing popular songs at the time. This was also to be a Variety type show. Martian Landing would feature Muppet Koosebaine like creatures that would swap jokes and do skits on another planet. It was to be a Live variety show. It ashame these didn't get aired.

This book has so much I haven't mentioned yet, (I don't want to spoil it!) and it is definetly worth every penny. By far, one of my favs. among a long line of Muppet Books. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A rare glimpse into the mind of a genius.
Jim Henson was one of the most imaginative people of this past century and this book beautifully captures some of his brilliance in the form of sketches, doodles and small art pieces. If you've ever marveled at his artistry, or wondered at his talent, then this is the book for you.

What I most enjoyed about this collection are the sketches and stories from Jim Henson's earliest years and most obscure projects. Alison Inches has included Jim's cartoons from college, High School program designs, album covers, advertisment ideas and story boards, as well as characters like, Taminella Grinderfall, Thog, Chicken Liver and Baskerville. Have no fear though, plenty of more widely known projects and characters are featured as well. We're taken through the steps from Sam and Friends, to the Muppet's succesful commercials, to Rowlf the Dog's appearances on The Jimmy Dean Show, through The Muppet Show and Sesame Street. Along the way we're also treated to many unrealized puppets and projects. It's a facinating journey and one that you're sure to revisit many times over.

Any designer, puppeteer, artist or Muppet fan will be fasinated by this book. But don't think you'll be geting a comprehensive career retrospective. I'd recomend "Jim Henson: The Works" for that. The focus here is squarely on the creation and design, which is right where it should be and it makes Designs and Doodles the perfect companion piece to Jim Henson: The Works. One giving you a look at his projects and the other a glimpse into his mind. And oh, what a marvelous glimpse it is! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars simple and appealing book for little ones
Needless to say, we are at a time in our lives when we have a number of potty training books around the house, and we find this one straightforward and appealing. It features a little Muppet boy who has been learning to use a potty seat. The youngster talks about how happy he is to be a big boy and wear pants and go potty by himself. He interrupts play, takes down his pants, sits on the potty and "goes", wipes, flushes, pulls up his pants and washes his hands before going back to play, where his friend and toys are waiting to pick up where they left off.

The book features a potty seat that sits on the big toilet rather than a free-standing potty chair, and no phrases for defecation or urination are used. A good choice for families in this interesting phase of development.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite potty book.
This is my favorite potty book because it is actually the most realistic. Step by step, it matches what a child really does when going to the bathroom. First, Kermit must stop playing -- a very important point! He runs to the potty, unsnaps his pants, goes potty on a toilet with a child's seat on top, snaps up and washes his hands. When he goes back to play with his friend, the toys and his friend are still there. If you have a child that doesn't like to stop playing to take time to go potty, you know how important that is. We found this book easy to relate to. The illustrations are recongizable even to young toddlers. Truthfully, it is the only potty book I found useful. In addition to all that, this book IS cute. I'm sorry it is out of print.

5-0 out of 5 stars Potty with Kermit
The book shows your child step by step what they need to do. The pictures of the toilet look realistic as opposed to some other books. With repitation - your child will understand and follow. Good luck to all you Moms & Dads!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great potty training book for toddlers
Both my daughter and son loved this book while they were getting used to the potty. They loved it so much that they wanted to read it all the time - so I kept it in the bathroom and everytime I read it to them, I had them sit on the potty. Most of the time they "used" the potty at the same time. I highly recommend this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for kids!
This book helps kids transform neat puppets into extraordinary ones. There are great ideas for developing characters, as well. Worth its weight in gold.

5-0 out of 5 stars fabulous ideas
This book has so many great ideas using many easy to find objects. It even includes a little packet with 2 pairs of eyes, some faux fur, a few feathers and other sundries. The day this book arrived, my daughter and I made 3 puppets. In the next several days we made many more out of socks, oven mitts and other things that were just laying around the house. If you hate to throw things away, you'll love this. After reading the book, you'll start looking at your trash with new eyes. Old paper towel rolls, band-aid tins, fabric scraps, plastic spoons, small plastic bottles you might throw out, sponges, pot scrubbers, erasers--all these things can be transformed into puppets.

My only quibble is that the suggested reading level is ages 4-8. My nearly five-year-old can't do these projects alone, (I also use a hot glue gun, so it's too hot for her) so I've ended up letting her direct what goes where on the puppets. I think a six year-old working with less dangerous adhesives could do many of the projects himself, and I think kids even older than the age range would find the projects fun, especially if they have little siblings or an opportunity to teach younger kids. (Like helping out at Sunday school).

The book is full of projects that are easy to do right away, don't cost much money or require special trips to the craft store and let your child develop her imagination/creativity/emotional skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars beautiful book, whimsical puppets....
but children will not be able to reproduce the puppets pictured. Maybe that is the point, that you can make puppets out of anything. So the book is good for inspiration. But don't expect to be able to make the puppets quite like they do!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginning puppeteers
I bought this book expecting little more than sharing some arts-and-crafts time with my kids that also blended with my interests in puppetry and the Muppets. Big surprise -- this book is full of good, basic advice on puppet manipulation, voice, and puppet building. My daughter and I have already made one of the puppets, involving gardening gloves, ping-pong balls, and feathers, and each of us came up with something different and delightful. The addition of some small supplies to get the aspiring puppet builder started is very nice, but this would have been a good buy even without that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inovative Puppet Craft Book!!
Fabulous ideas for making puppets and recycling everyday items. You will never look at objects the same, because you will learn how to give just about anything life. A great inspirtion for begining to professional puppeteers and even kids. ... Read more
