Creator and engineer of the elegant Color Surprises and Black Cat, White Cat: A Pop-Up Book of Opposites, Chuck Murphy has also crafted an amazingly simple yet beautiful counting book, One to Ten: Pop-Up Surprises! This counting book doesn't mess around with fancy rhymes or cutesy sheep--open the first spread and you'll see a bold, fat number one--white on black--right next to a bold black number two on a white page. Pull the number one down, and one tropical spotted frog swims off the page! Lift and turn the number two to the right, and two toucans pop out from a leafy nest. Three colorful beetles crawl out of the number three with the slide of a tab. You get the idea--Murphy's almost breathtaking pop-up surprises take readers all the way to the number ten. Pop-up book collectors and budding bean counters alike will revel in this instructive, interactive masterpiece. (Ages 4 and older) --Karin Snelson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Fanastic, Entertaining and Educational Book
Chuck Murphy has that special talent to keep children occupied with entertaining and educational books. Although I find these books wear out fast, they are well worth the price. The colorful pop-outs and designs are excellent. Our son is two and a half years old and just doesn't quite yet posses the ability push and pull all of the props without tearing them.

5-0 out of 5 stars a delightful introduction to numbers for young and old
How lucky for children and adults that Chuck Murphy puts his considerable creative talents to the service of young children. All of his books are quiet little masterpieces, and One to Ten Pop-Up Surprises is one of the best.

Stark black and white numbers are lifted to reveal colorful frogs and birds, bugs and butterflies, cats, dogs, seashells and even little boys and girls. Three of the ten manipulatives are tabs, which are more difficult for young children, but any adult would be eager to help out with this beautiful book.

Our two-year old eagerly yells out each number and then counts the revealed objects. With this gorgeous teaching aid, learning is not only painless, but a pleasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bought it 2 times
My son is visually impaired and just loves this book. He actually learned how to crawl by his father and i sitting at opposite ends of the room and "reading" the book. He would crawl between us. I could get him to stop anything he was doing and crawl to the book. Then he wants you to read and read and read it. We read it so much in his first year, we had to buy it again. Yes it is not durable, but I don't think there is much to be done about that.

5-0 out of 5 stars incredible and appealing to babies and up
My son has loved these since he was about 8 mo, and now he is a pre-schooler. Well, as with all pop-ups, I always supervise, but this series has fairly simple engineering, so an over enthusisastic tug or rip is fairly easy to cellotape. Our four books have lots of tape, but they still work after three years of frequent use. The pop-ups and presentation are so appealing, you will never regret this purchase. An absolute classic for your childs library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mind Ticklers for Children as Well as Adults
Chuck Murphy's creative way to stimulate and educate a child. The book consists of 10 colorful pop-ups which encourage children to ask questions about the things they are seeing in the pop-ups as well as to count.
Our two young boys, ages 2 and 4, take these books everywhere with them. During long automobile voyages or flights each book keeps the child's mind entertained for at least 30 minutes but not more than 1 hour and 20 minutes during any given trip.
We have already purchased the above book three times since it has sustained a lot of wear and tear from the mountains to the beaches. Chuck Murphy's books are tops with our kids. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Books for Toddlers!
I have never written a review of anything before, but these books merit a thumbs up! My mom gave our now-20 month old son some of these books when he was 10 months old. The "Opposites" book helped him learn those concepts quickly and with "Colors", he began to say "purple" and "yellow" immediately. Unfortunately, he did manage to rip the sliding pages out - he's very strong. But I have purchased new ones, and he is old enough now to just slide them out and not dismantle the book. I highly recommend this series for little ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta Have It
I bought this series to keep my 21 mo. daughter busy on an airplane ride. WOW - this is a great series of books. They actually have parts that slide out that a toddler won't destroy (with a little help from Mom). The concepts are kept simple and include; Oppoosites, Counting, Shapes & Colors. I wish this author had other books made the same way - I would buy them all. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Color fun for one, again.
I am buying this book for the second time. My one year old daughter's first copy has been over 'loved' and some of the pages have stuck together after enjoying lunch along with her!

The shiny paper is fascinating for small fingers and large eyes. The colors theme focuses on the most logical use for the 'dazzle' effect and I'm not likely to buy the other books in this series. But I find this a simple and unfailingly attractive book, useful for learning the names of objects as well as colors. It also is the preferred 'distractor' when we go shopping!

5-0 out of 5 stars A big favorite of my 20 month old
This book is a big hit in our home because it gives toddlers the chance to "do it myself." This colorful board book has pages with animal drawings that slide out. Each page has a color with a printed texture (e.g. a red page with darker red dots on it). At the top or side of the page is a solid tab that allows the child to pull out a picture of an animal with that same texture on it (e.g. the red page has a ladybug hidden in it like the one printed on the cover of the book).

This book is a favorite because the sliding mechanism is very well made, so my daughter is generally able to work the pages herself with little or no help from me. She recognizes the colors and textures on each page and names the animal before she pulls the picture out and then really enjoys demonstrating that she was right. All of the pages are very sturdy and well made, so it's hard for little fingers to damage it.

Excellent book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun & Learning
Purchased this book based on good reviews; and heartily agree. My daughter is now 2 and still enjoys the book; pulling out the sliding pages & naming the pictures and colors, not to mention the practicing of motor skills! An excellent addition to your bookshelf or as a gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book but buy glue with it!
I love this book and so does my 14-month-old but if she doesn't pull the slider out straight but instead twists it a bit, the pages have a habit of coming apart and the slider slides all the way out. Oops! Very easy to fix (a little glue does the trick), but I've had to glue 2 pages back in in the month we've owned it. It is indeed a favorite book.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 1 year old granddaughter LOVES this book!
I found this book through one of those "So you want to..." lists. After reading the reviews, I decided to add it to my granddaughter's gifts for her first birthday. She LOVES it! The combination of color and the sliding pages engage her fully and she will look at it over and over again. She takes it with her all of the time. I am very picky about children's books (English degree, don't you know:) and I just think this one is GREAT!! ... Read more

If only words could describe Chuck Murphy's Color Surprises aswell as his gasp-inducing pop-ups manage to capture the essence of each color ofthe rainbow. Each page of this little wonder--one of the best, most artisticpop-up books we've ever seen--features a single, solid-colored square. With aquick pull or gentle push, however, one of nature's creatures slithers, flies,or bounces out of the square and (almost) off the page. Red is a gracefullyunfolding starfish, and blue is a pleasantly popping parrot. We'd love to givethe rest away, but half the pleasure of this fine book is in the discovery. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for pre-readers
My toddler (age 2 years and 1 month) loves this book. It's brightly colored and simple, but the pop-up sections give her little hands something to do and the pictures are delightful. The entire book is deceptively simple, actually: a very young child can laugh at the pictures, an older one can make the animal noises, and an older one yet can name the colors and each figure.

I also like the fact that the pop-ups are fairly strong, so they don't rip easily.

Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful and delightfully educational
My 18-month-old son and I both fell in love with this book at first sight. Between the deceitfully simple black-and-white covers lie the many artistically created surprises. My son loves to flip the solid-colored flaps--under considerate supervision so that he does not tear the delicate figures--to see what's hidden behind and has never ceased to be amazed. As he pages through the book, he would say the names of the featured animals that he has learned, "tigger" "fish" ... he would sit there and look at this book for a dozen times or more, and he always comes back to ask to read it the next day. The beautifully designed and perfectly crafted surprises have really impressed him. It delights as well as teaches. An excellent book for kids as well as "big people" who love good books. I am getting a few more copies for friends with young children. (p.s. Murphy`s "one to ten pop-up surpises" is just as wonderful and enchanting, but a little bit too delicate for our little guy's fingers to handle--to pull, to dial, etc., so I always need to help him with that one.)

5-0 out of 5 stars So good we bought it again
My son is visually impaired and just loves this book. He actually learned how to crawl by his father and i sitting at opposite ends of the room and "reading" the book. He would crawl between us. I could get him to stop anything he was doing and crawl to the book. Then he wants you to read and read and read it. We read it so much in his first year, we had to buy it again. Yes it is not durable, but I don't think there is much to be done about that.

5-0 out of 5 stars a spectacular exploration of color
Chuck Murphy is a treasure. Children and adults alike will thrill to the magical images revealed with the lift of a flap or the pull of a tab. A pink flamingo, purple butterflies, a blue parrot .... these are just three of the beautiful images that pop up, and the multi-colored finale never fails to elicit a squeal of delight from our two-year old.

We have given several of Mr. Murphy's books as gifts and they are always appreciated, even by kids who normally prefer mechanical toys to books. Two of the pages use tab manipulatives and are a bit more difficult for young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entrancing!!! My now 13 mo old loves it
Its joined his list of favorites -- He reads it a dozen times at a sitting and has learned to pull the tabs and open the flaps albeit with a little supervision so that he doesn't get carried away and try and pull those amazing images off the page. The only delicate one is the green pull tab of the snake. I've had to fix that twice in the last month. Its so beautiful, I don't mind experiencing it umpteen times a day with my son. Its incredibly educational too -- He's already learned to make tiger sounds!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This author is brilliant!!
All of his seek n slide books are amazing and I highly recommend them. My daughter knew all her colors, shapes, numbers and opposites before the age of 2 because of these books. Opposites, just like the others, are made specifically for a younger child. I would say 9mo -3 yrs old. My daughter LOVES to pull the slide tabs out and they are very sturdy and have held up to constant pulling. These books teach by reinforcing what is learned in the pull tab. It is a great memory game as well. Chuck Murphy knows how to make books that younger kids will not only appreciate but actually learn fast!

5-0 out of 5 stars delightfully brilliant
My son loves looking at this again and again. He moves the tabs and loves the last page the most. I love the art work and have a new found appreciation for pop-up books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chuck Murphy's Talent For Children
I have purchased several of Chuck Murphy's books for our 2 year old. Although the books are made for 4-8 years old, our son can play with it for hours. Since smaller children such as ours do not realize how easy things are torn, we are on our 3rd copy of the book. It is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful book with a surprise ending!
A wonderful book for kids of almost any age. All of the pop-ups are great, but the final one had us gasping in amazement.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pop-up Shapes Delight
We bought this book for our 10 month old son for two reasons: he loved the other Chuck Murphy books (numbers and colors) and we are huge dog lovers. This book combines the best of both worlds - teaches kids shapes with doggies. For example, the circle shape is represented by a 3-D bicycle and a dog running next to it. The square is a bed with a dog curled up on the end of it and my favorite is the heart - two dogs "kissing". The colors in this book are not as vibrant as the 1 to 10 book or the colors book, but my son is as entranced by it as the others. He absolutely loves opening the shapes and seeing the resulting scenes pop up. Although he isn't grasping what the figures are yet, he is grasping the cause and effect nature of the book. I recommend it highly. ... Read more

Pop-up books have come a long way, baby, and Chuck Murphy, creator of our all-time favorite, Color Surprises: A Pop-Up Book, and the astounding One to Ten: Pop-Up Surprises!, surely deserves some of the credit. In Black Cat, White Cat: A Pop-Up Book of Opposites, youngsters will love interacting with the myriad meowers, all displaying a state of opposites. On the first page sits a dignified, green-eyed black cat, simply labeled "Black cat." Lift the cat, fold it left, and out springs a white cat chasing after a big red ball! On another page, "High cat" perches atop a pop-up ladder, as "Low cat" slinks by below. With the simple downward tug of a tab, "Young cat" magically forms jowls and a bigger head to become "Old cat." No run-of-the-mill, two-dimensional illustrations could communicate the concept of opposites as effectively as this artful book. But even those who have already fully grasped "near and far," "day and night" won't be able to resist these nodding, leaping, prowling cats. (All ages) --Karin Snelson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifuly crafted pop ups
I bought this book for my nephew, and I almost kept it for myself.

The illustrations are very clear, and well thought out. The pop up dynamics are just precious. This should not be a book that would get rough-housed around. Some of the pop ups are quite delicate.

My nephew is 4 and enjoyed it immensely.

5-0 out of 5 stars A captivating book for a 1-yr-old cat lover
This is a great "opposites" book. The young-cat, old-cat transition is facinating to me, but my son loves the cat that leaps out at you (out-cat, in-cat). He laughed really hard as I had that cat pop out about 10 times in a row.

Now, if I want to get him to go into his room, I say "Black cat, white cat", and he heads straight for this book. He can barely say anything yet, but he loves this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars FOUND at last!!
I saw this book in an educational toy store several years ago. I had no children at the time and put it back on the shelf; a few weeks later I returned to buy it just for me, but it was gone. Since then I've actually had a child who is now 18 months old, and I have seached many a book store shelf and even looked here on amazon before with no sucess. One bookstore recently told me it was out of print and could take several months to get. Now that I've found it here I'm ordering it immerdiately! And I urge anyone else reading this review to the same. It is an amazing little book!! You won't be sorry!

5-0 out of 5 stars a charming introduction to opposites
"Black cat, white cat. Day cat, night cat .... "

Chuck Murphy has done it again, giving children and parents a little work of art disguised as a pop-up book.

Three manipulatives are fold-out, four are operated by tabs, and three automatically pop up with the turning of a page in this fun and creative introduction to opposites, each concept illustrated by felines. A delight for children and adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Little Ones, Too
I bought this book to read to my newborn son. Now that he is approaching 3 months, he finds the pop ups fascinating and the colors really catch his eye. I love reading this book to him and enjoy the pop ups and colors as much as my son. This book is already one of his favorites even though he is too young to understand the concepts presented in the book right now. I plan to get more of this author's books since I found this one to be so great!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Chuck and the Giant Thriller! Truly Heart-Stopping!
When was the last time we were amazed by a pop-up version of "Jack and the Beanstalk"? Way back in the1930s, I'd like to think, by a Toledo, Ohio art director named Harold B. Lentz. Well, be prepared to be overwhelmed again -- 65 long years after Blue Ribbon readers were delightfully amused to find the defeated giant, in glorious 3-D!, helplessly lying on his back with his arms and legs in the air. And it had to be another creative giant in our pop-up planet, Chuck Murphy, to retell this thriller. About a year ago in Los Angeles, I had the privilege of watching Mr. Murphy demo this yet-to-be-published book. I can still hear the collective gasp that filled the room as he opened the second spread, revealing a rising castle in the clouds and Jack's stalk spiraling skyward. But he was kind enough to stop there. He didn't want to deny his audience, each one of us an incurable "kinetic" book buff, the experience of discovering the drama and the danger that were still to come. Thank you, Chuck, for keeping us on the edge of our seats (for a few more months!) and for letting us do the "unfolding" ourselves. It was worth the wait! At the risk of giving away too much of the storyline (Really now ... is there somebody out there who still doesn't know the ending of this oft-told tale?), allow me to share with you Mr. Murphy's mastery of his movable art. Utilizing a wonderfully wicked combination of suspense and surprise, he makes Jack's hasty departure from the giant's lair truly heart-stopping. As Jack quietly retrieves his family's treasures, the big bad brute wakes up (slowly opening an eye with the help of a pull-tab activated by the reader), then WHAM! (as the page is turned) the giant looms large over Jack and, just in the nick of time (again with the aid of a pull-tab -- talk about audience participation!), our hero escapes the monster's huge hand. Whew! Before I say more and spoil it for you, grab yourself a copy of Chuck Murphy's "Jack and the Beanstalk" today. And don't tell me I didn't warn you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun read, a sweet book
I have ALL of the Razzle Dazzle books and this one is my favorite. It is in the form of a poem, with each page being a line telling something else that "I love". It's fun to read and easy to learn. When I am somewhere with my son and he is getting fussy, I start reciting, "I love the sun, I love the moon, ..." and I have his full attention and he settles down to hear the rest. A wonderful book!

4-0 out of 5 stars A nicely illustrated pop-up based on the Disneyland ride.
The Haunted Mansion pop-up book is based on famous Disneyland attraction. The art is quite nice and there are lots of "pop-ups." There is even a hologram inside! Some of the ghostly inhabitants are a little scary for really young kids but all in all it's a nice book even if you aren't a Haunted Mansion enthusiast. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Baby's Favorite!
This is the first book my daughter fell in love with and we have to keep reading it to her over and over. She loves the pictures, the sparkle and the faces. When we close the back cover she complains until we start over. She has had this at just a few months old and now that she is about to turn one, I am about to order another as the original is worked over a bit!
Highly recommended! ... Read more

Great way to practice beginning sounds. Make a game of guessing what's under the picture.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good Book to learn Alphabet
Both the illustrations and design of this book is not so attractive. Worse than that, the flaps are very easily torn. It is not easy to push the flaps back, even for the adult. Quite disappointed to purchase this book. The price is also quite expensive compared with the quality. Not recommend to own one if one has another better choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book totally captivated my 5-year old!
When we first saw this book in a local store, my daughter could not put it down! Murphy creates exciting pictures and images by using the ABC's. This is a great book to help your little one learn the Alphabet and create a desire for reading in a fun, non-pressured way. I recommend it for any preschooler, and I know this will be a treasured book in our family for years to come. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is Worth the Hunt
My six-month old loves this book. We have several of Chuck Murphy's Razzle Dazzle books, and so far this one seems to be her favorite. The book features children searching for Easter eggs in various locations. Each page has a simple phrase that describes the picture, such as "UNDER the flowerpot" or "IN the grass", and each Easter egg is a colorful, foil-like insert on the page. It's a great book for introducing reading to a child... Colorful, lots to talk about with the child, and just the right number of pages to maintain attention. And it's a nice, chunky board book too, so I can give it to my daughter to play with independently without having her tear it. ... Read more
