5-0 out of 5 stars Remembering my youth
I was very happy to find this book. It brought back memories of growing up in a bilingual eniviroment. For many years I searched for such a book. I finally have a book with which I can share my heritage with my family and friends. Thank you Ms.Delacre.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic
This unique bilingual nursury rhyme and music book, provides to the Hispanic mother what so many Mother Goose Rhyme books provide to the American mother: an excuse to cuddle with her child and share the dear folklore she grew up with. The fact that this is a collection in picture book format makes a great difference. It lends itself to share in one sitting. After several readings with a parent, the child will start to sing the songs by himself as soon as he sees the pictures. The illustrations depict real places troughout Latin America. In the 11 years I've used this book both outside and inside the classroom, with Latino children and non-Latino children as well, I've witnessed time and again the joy it brings to Hispanic parents and children. I've seen how Latinas spontaneously start singing the songs by flipping through the pages of the book and instantly feel compelled to share their forgotten folklore with their children. I've seen three generations of a family take out a guitar and play the songs in the middle of their kitchen. I've seen the pride of Latino children when they join hands with their classmates to play the game-song of arroz con leche and feel acceptance and respect in doing so. This is a book that brings out the best in people, and stands entirely on its own. It is a book that should be in every Spanish language or bilingual collection of a school. It is a classic.

1-0 out of 5 stars get real bilingual singers!
I grew up speaking both Spanish and English in NYC, and wanted to share some of the songs I grew up with, with my newborn daughter. I am going to throw this cassette out to ensure she does not pronounce Spanish like a she learned it in high school. A truly wonderful bilingual CD/tape is De Colores by Orozco. His book by the same title is also wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A savory taste of Latin American "canticos"
"Arroz Con Leche" is an enchanting book filled with songs and rhymes that are heard throughout Latin America. They bring nostalgia to Latino readers and give non-latino readers the sense of passion and joy the Latin American culture is filled with. These are typical verses that most Latin American children are conforted with in their sleep, sung about in the streets as they play, or whispered gently into their ears as they are rocked in their mother's arms. This book has been extremely special in our family, since as a child my siblings and I have been nurtured with these songs and rhymes. Having the book to share with the next generation is such a wonderful experience because the tradition of these songs can continue on even if we are not in our native land. The pictures are just so vivid; I can see my uncle with his straw hat sitting in the bench next to the little neighborhood market just how the book shows it. The colors used and the situations depicted are true to the Latin American culture. All the components of the book are so spectacular that I'm not sure how to distinguish which is my favorite; the songs which are both in english and spanish (I think that is so helpful, especially for those who do not speak spanish but who would like to expose their children to the Latin American culture), the enchanting pictures that go along with the event in the song/rhyme, or the musical notes that accomany the songs in the back of the book. It's fun to be able to play the guitar or piano along with the songs because it brings them to life and makes them much more fanciful. I have not found a Latin American children's book of songs so complete and entertaining as this one has been. All of Lulu Delacre's Latin American children's folksongs and tales are so magnificant, I have presented them to my Children's Literature class in college and those students with children were so impressed with it that many of them went out and bought them for their own children. If you are seeking typical Latin American children's folksongs, you should with no doubt get this book, it will fill you and your child with so much joy that you will want to go out and get Delacre's other Latin American children's books. I recommend this book to the young and the old, it will charm everyone!

3-0 out of 5 stars The book alone ...
If you take the book on its own (apart from any accompanying audiotape), you will find a cute text and fair translations from Spanish to English. As an introduction to some of the common rhymes and songs, the book serves well and has attractive illustration. There are other books of this type you might enjoy more, particularly if you wish to use the book in a classroom setting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This book is about a young boy and the fear of his music teacher due to the rumors he hears about her. The main character is a little boy who's name was neve mentioned, but he doesn't like getting up in fromt of the class and he hears he has to sing solos and play instruments. The setting is at an elementary schol. This book would be good for just about anyone because the author chose to write about a topic that everyone has experienced first hand, GOSSIP!! This book is a fantasy. I like the way the author used that topic for the familiarity and the adult oriented jokes that you never notice or even understand until you get older. This book reminds me of my own school. Because, rumors can get so out of hand there in a short amount of time. This reminds me of some of Dr. Seuss' writings. What sets this book aside is the inside jokes that I mentioned earlier, not many children's books include those. I really liked this book because its just like talking to a five year old boy about a teacher he hasn't met yet. It's shockingly realistic. But, what really brought it together was at the end when they explained what the teacher was really like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This was my favorite book when I was little. I love the way they use the way kids exaggerate. The rumors about this teacher get completely out of hand and they use humorous "inside jokes" that only older kids would know about. It was silly yet oddly genious at the same time. I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Diz Kool Kat gits around!
A wonderful photo-filled rhyme story of this lucky cat Nicky and his cast of jazz music's greatest performers. I bought the book and CD, "Nicky's jazz for Kids" for my two young sons. They loved reading/singing the story and then they jammed along with the CD on their own instruments. This is a great opportunity for parents to get their kids turned onto jazz before they take them to see Wynton Marsalis at Lincoln Center. It really helps Jazz to be fun for kids to enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Such a Great Idea for a Book
Nicky is a cat-- a fashionably all-black feline. In this book he's rhyming his way through encounters with several jazz musicians. The text is fun, the book is beautiful, and the pictures are very, very cool. The Lena Horne shot is my favorite-- she is gazing elegantly down at Nicky. The author has had a lifetime career of photographing Jazz musicians, and the Nicky pictures are my favorite. If only I can keep the baby from drooling on it until he's big enough to appreciate it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars As Much Fun Now As When I was a Kid
I grew up with this book and never knew of the others in the series. Seeing as my daughter loves dogs I had to buy this when I saw it in this new edition.

An opera singer has moved into the house next to Harry's. The singer practices all day long, singing loud and high. Harry does not like this sound. Harry tries a number of ways to get her to stop. These do not please his family. But finally, a good way is found and everyone is happy.

As a parent, one of the things I like about this book is that it is clear that Harry is not being good when he howls, leads cows or a marching band, or other tricks. Although we want Harry to succeed, we also want it to be in the right and good way. This book knows the difference.

I loved this book as a kid and I still do. My daughter loves it (hopefully my son will too).

4-0 out of 5 stars harry and the lady next door
I like Harry and the lady Next Door because Harry doesnt like her sining. I also like this book because Harry brings all these animals. home and the lady sings louder than them. These are reasons why you should read these books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Harry the Wonder Dog!
Harry goes to desperate lengths to silence the lady next door - her singing is too high and loud. He howls, bits piano legs, steals music, chases cows and bands, but finally succeeds, to everyones' relief. Even the lady next door is happy.

Star of 3rd Rock from the Sun, actor John Lithgow is less well known as a music enthusiast, but in his comical verse story The Remarkable Farkle McBride, he has created the musical prodigy he would perhaps like to have been. Farkle is a little boy with astounding talents (he's playing violin with the orchestra by the age of 3) but little perseverance. Each year he gets bored with his instrument, takes up and masters a new one, and then gets bored with that. Of his recently beloved trombone, he says, "The racket is more than my eardrums can bear! So return it or throw it away! I don't care!" In the end, Farkle realizes that the whole orchestra is his instrument: he finds satisfaction as a conductor, and the book ends with a gatefold of him triumphantly leading all the other musicians. C.F. Payne's illustrations combine a Norman Rockwell realism with a caricaturist's sense of humor. (Ages 5 and older) --Richard Farr ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Remarkable Farkle is Fantastic!
This is one of the best children's books out there. I have read this book to several grade school classes (K - 3rd) and it's always a winner. Mr. Lithgow does a wonderful job of putting words to the sounds of instruments and his rhyme is fantastic.

Mr. Payne's illustrations are brilliant and are the finishing touch to this a new "classic"

It seems that there is a rush of actors writing children's books with varying degrees of success, but Mr. Lithgow does a first class job. If he decides to abandon his day job - he has a brilliant future as a children's author.

Buy the book - you or your children won't be dissappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Music Made Wonderful
Farkle McBride is definitely a remarkable little guy. He could play the violin at three. But was bored with violin playing at four. At five he discovered the flute. But at six decided it was not for him. When Farkle was seven, he took up the trombone, but then gave it up too. Next he tried percussion, but decided that was not quite right for him either. After thinking and thinking he realized that his very favorite sound was all the different instruments playing together...the orchestra. And so when the conductor gets sick, Maestro Farkle McBride steps in, finding what he really likes to do most at last. John Lithgow as written a terrific children's book, full of rhythm, rhyme and wonderful sound effects. His text is complimented by C.F. Payne's very expressive and detailed, larger than life illustrations. This is a delightful story that will charm and amuse all youngsters aged 4-8 and is a wonderful introduction to both musical instruments and the orchestra. The Remarkable Farkle McBride is a winner and a wonderful addition to all home libraries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Musical Fun
I judge a great children's book by how easily the words flow, how captivating and relevant the illustrations are, and most importantly, if my children enjoy it. The illustrations are what first caught my eye and since I have a very musical family, I thought this would be a nice addition to our library. My children loved it immediately! The rhythym is fun and the sheer silliness of this boy who is so musically talented but cannot seem to find his place, sends my kids into fits of laughter. Sometimes, as adults, I think we need to stop taking ourselves so seriously and find simple pleasure in things the way our kids do. This book comes highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Way To Go, Mr. Lithgow!
Farkle McBride is not satisfied. He's a musical genius who masters every instrument he picks up, only to toss it away out of boredom soon after. By the end of this story, told in fun, lilting verse, Farkle has found a way to be involved in music; a way that also holds his interest.

John Lithgow's books are a cut above many other children's books written by celebrities. The rhymed verse that he uses to tell Farkle's story bounces and rambles along, and it's almost impossible not to hear Lithgow's voice in your head, "reading" the book to you.

The illustrations by C.F. Payne are at once sensitive and wonderfully silly; they're a perfect match for Lithgow's text. I have been known to bring this book out for friends and just open it to certain pages (such as the one showing Farkle with the cymbals) to exclaim, "Look at this painting! Look at the kid's face. Isn't that a riot? And the story's really good too!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Story
I purchased this book through day care for my 6 month old daughter. She loved it from the start. She is now 13 months, and this is her favorite bedtime story. She can point out farkle, the birds, and the instruments. Nice rhymes, clever story. The paperback version rips easily with a toddler, so I'm purchasing the hardback now. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Classics for Beginners
My daughter's piano teacher uses the book as one of the core books to teach her students. The classical pieces in the book are fun and shortened versions of famous classics that we've all heard at one time or another. My daughter likes the book a lot that she's picked out Symphony #40 as a recital piece. The book also includes short bios of the most famous composers which is a good reading for the children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great selections, for the beginner
The selected songs were very well picked. The level of playing ranges from beginner to slight intermediate. I loved playing the pieces (for me, an internediate level pianist with 5 years of lessons, it was just right, because it brushed up my rusty skills, but was disappointing because the pieces were really samples of the original arrangements. Most of the songs consisted of only one page, so don't expect to find simplified full versions, rather, expect samplers from this book! But still great if all you are after is to be able to play the introduction to the pieces, for fun and relaxation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You David McPhail
I would like to take this opportunity to thank David McPhail's parents for having a child who grew to write this book. MOLE MUSIC will surely be a classic, loved by future generations of creative dreamers. Seldom does such a simple story resonate so deeply. It takes a great talent to wield so few words to mean so much.

When Mole sees a violinist on television he is so touched by the music he wants to make beautiful music of his very own, so he orders a violin for himself. When it arrives he can only cajole it to make horrid, screeching sounds. But Mole, the industrious, kind-hearted and hard worker that he is continues to practice (and practic and practice). After many years his music is even more lovely than the violinist he saw so long ago. Dear, dear Mole wishes he could change the world with his music--and Mr. McPhail shows the change that occured because of Mole's efforts strictly through the art. I won't give it away, but it is a great change indeed, and all the more touching because Mole played his music not for fame, but for the love of the music itself and a desire to share beauty with the world.

The words and art blend seamlessly together, one never overshadowing the other. This book is as a bright star in the world of Children's literature. I can only imagine that Mr. McPhail himself is like Mole--for who else could write a book like this? It's a visual song from the heart that could possibly change the world by inspiring young children to create some lovliness of their own. Thank you David McPhail--and thanks to your parents too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Child & Adult Inspiration
I first heard this story as a part of a sermon given to a congregation of mixed ages. The children were enthralled with the illustrations (as were many adults) but the "message" was deeply felt by the "older" child in all of us there. It is the message that no one really knows how much influence they have. Mole was just doing something that really intrigued and interested him, and brought him pleasure. He wished that he could influence others, but never knew what his music did for the world. Maybe this is true for each of us as we pursue what we really have a passion for. The message is true for children and adults alike. I will share this with my young 8 year old violinist friend, and from the pulpit. Thank you, David McPhail!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Lesson for Us All
I'm 43 and checked this book out of the library to read to my kids. I was so moved by it that I plan to buy several copies as gifts for both adults and kids. I'd like to have the artwork on the walls of my music studio to remind me . . .it's all about the energy we put out into the world. A timeless and most important lesson! Thank you David McPhail!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mole's Music
Not only is the story itself quite clever but the music notes in the growing tree are also quite well chosen. When Mole begins to play the violin the music that is produced on the tree is what almost every beginner learns to play, "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star". The music of Brahms and Beethoven are illustrated in the tree throughout the book. When the soldiers first stop at the tree, the notes are from Beethoven's 6th Symphony,"The Pastoral". When the soldiers drop their weapons and shake hands, Mole is playing "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's 9th Symphony. And what better way to go to sleep than to Brahms' Lullaby, shown on the very last page as Mole goes to sleep. A wonderful book for adults and children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet book shows shy kids confidence

5-0 out of 5 stars Aida Rocks!
I read this book and marvelled at the incredible illustrations. I'm a teacher, so I shared it with my young students. They didn't understand everything, but they sure did appreciate the artwork and story line. I'm buying it again as a gift for my niece's 12th birthday. She is obsessed with Egypt and Egyptian subjects. The Aida Broadway production recently came through Austin at the Bass Concert Hall, but we were unable to attend. This truly is the next best thing. When read correctly, it pleases the senses so much more (or as much as to some people) than hearing the production.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not too impressed...
WARNING WARNING...do not expect too much from this book if you are a fan of Elton John's Broadway musical and not the actual opera. I found this book in the library shortly after seeing the traveling version of the new "Aida" (it was AWESOME) and, while the book does have gorgeous pictures and the story is told from the point of view of someone who practically lives in Aida's shoes, I was disappointed with the overall story. It was completely unlike the show I saw. I realize that the opera and the Broadway show are totally different. However, I found this book to be confusing and was unimpressed by the sloppy style of the writing...loved the musical, though!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece that brings back memories
I was only about 10 or 11 when my PATS class was studying the arts. I was given this book as a gift, and brought it to the class. The teacher then got the information from my book to buy it for herself. To this very day I have an appreciation for the arts, and especially Aida. Even though I cannot find my book, I still have the cover, and the memories. The tale is beautifully written, and the exceptional artwork in my opinion should be enlarged and framed. I recommend this beautiful book as a teaching tool for young students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aida - A wonderful literture tie-in with Egyptian history!
Leontyne Price's retelling of Aida is concise and beautifully illustrated. My three sixth grade classes loved the story, but my voice gave out in the repeated readings! I found the CD-Rom of Aida, which features Ms. Price's rich voice reading the text, along with musical excerpts from the opera. (Ms. Price sings Aida, Placido Domingo sings Radames.) Total playing time on the CD is 67:22. I expect this combination of beautiful story, music, illustrations, and singing will serve my students well as an introduction/exposure to opera.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Heroine Aida
Forbidden love, enemy captivity, and royal betrayal - Aida endures it all. This book is a talented interpretation of a beautiful tragedy composed by Giuseppe Verdi in the late 1800s. Children of all ages can now delight in the story of the Ethiopian Princess and the noble Egyptian warrior brought to life by the stunning illustrations of Leo and Diane Dillon, who were awarded the Caldecott medal for previous work in children's literature. This book captivated my imagination and heart because of its unique narrative perspective and intense passion with which the tale is told. Leontyne Price is the gifted performer who played the character of Aida for many years with much success. In the afterward of the book, Price describes the passion she had for her character. "In many ways," she says, "I believe Aida is a portrait of my inner self." That relationship with her character manifests itself in her telling of the story for children. Each scene is filled with the emotions and struggles of the young princess, with supporting dialogue and illustrations to enchant children and adults of all ages. The story introduces children to the two ancient cultures of Ethiopia and Egypt, while the illustrations help them to envision a time long, long ago. The relationships between a young girl, her father, her true love, and her country are depicted with emotion, struggle, and beauty by both the author and the illustrators. However, the most appealing aspect of this story is Aida herself. She is a strong woman of royal blood that holds her head high in the face of adversity and yet struggles to do right by all those she loves. She is a true heroine and children's literature must continue to produce such women for generations to come. ... Read more

Book Description

"Mama may have,
Papa may have,
But God bless the child
That's got his own!
That's got his own."

The song "God Bless the Child" was first performed by legendary jazz vocalist Billie Holiday in 1939 and remains one of her enduring masterpieces. In this picture book interpretation, renowned illustrator Jerry Pinkney has created images of a family moving from the rural South to the urban North during the Great Migration that reached its peak in the 1930s. The song's message of self-reliance still speaks to us today but resonates even stronger in its historical context. This extraordinary book stands as a tribute to all those who dared so much to get their own. A free CD of Billie Holiday's timeless recording of "God Bless the Child" is included to enjoy along with the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL PICTURES COMPLIMENT A BEAUTIFUL SONG
Jerry Pinkney collects vintage photographs, and it was those photos, along with the history of sharecroppers and their migration to the north, that inspired Pinkney to breathe new life into Billie Holiday's song "God Bless the Children" - not that the song needed new life, but it is a the perfect choice for the message Pinkney is trying to convey to young African-American readers--which is their history.

The large book displays some memorable illustrations, each stretching across two pages. The illustrations are scenes in the life of a sharecropper family in the thirties: scenes of Bible reading, horse playing, working in the field, loading the car to move up north and scenes of the working and living in an industrial city. With the illustrations are the words to the song "God Bless the Child." The song becomes a beautiful story brought to life with these detailed, expressive images. They are absolutely beautiful; I just couldn't get enough of them. A free CD of Holiday's God Bless the Child can be found at the back of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars pictures to sing to
Rebeccasreads highly recommends GOD BLESS THE CHILD as a perfect gift for every family who has ever known struggle, & the excitement & loss that moving from a well-loved place to a new world brings.

Exquisitely illustrated by the award-winning artist, Jerry Pinkney, GOD BLESS THE CHILD, is a glimpse into another time, hauntingly accompanied by the legendary singer Billie Holiday.

5-0 out of 5 stars Educators Recommend
God Bless the Child is a masterpiece: visually stunning and emotionally appealing.

Taking the words to Billie Holiday's and Arthur Herzog Jr.'s bluesy "God Bless the Child" as his text and inspiration, Pinkney depicts a family's move in the 1930s from the rural South to the industrialized North in what was known as the Great Migration.

His exquisite "slice of life" watercolor paintings are wonderfully atmospheric, capturing perfectly the period and people.

The final page is one of hope and the promise of a better future. The single painting shows a young boy sitting in a classroom holding a book, talking with his teacher. As Pinkney notes in an afterword, "At the time "God Bless the Child" was written, education was largely a privilege of the wealthy . . . Free public education was prized as the great equalizer-the stairway out of poverty for those with the courage and opportunity to climb it."

This book is a labor of love. One can see this clearly in the facial expressions, the gestures, even the postures of the characters. No detail is neglected. Each page feels like an inexorable progression forward-even the endpapers. (The front endpapers show what appears to be a cabin's rough, wooden walls, while the endpapers in the back of the book show painted wallpaper.)

This book receives our highest recommendation: Suitable for district-wide library acquisitions.

Book Description

An imaginative story about Mozart's many inspirations

Wolfgang Mozart must compose a new piano concerto to perform at the famous Burgtheatre in Vienna. But Mozart can't think of a note to write. When he hears his hungry pet starling sing out melodiously, his creativity begins to flow. Before he can put notes to paper, however, his muse escapes through the window, and Mozart is off on a frantic search to bring her back. Will Mozart find both his friend and song in time?

2-0 out of 5 stars Just so-so...
The kids found the book to be interesting, and as far as it goes, useful as well. The exercises and commentary are all written to the children's abilities. My problem with this bookis that it is just too short and too simple.

Just as the kids are starting to feel like they aren't wasting their time; just as they are seeing some progress; and just as they are eager to turn the page and learn the next bit, the book ends, with the final page telling them that they are now on their own, and that the best way to learn guitar is to listen to their favorite music and try to follow along.

Well, if the authors had said that on the first page we could have saved a little money and simply bypassed this book altogether. I think it is a great disservice to kids eager to learn, to tell them [after they have spent their money and time buying and following a guitar book] that they shouldn't really be using books to learn guitar.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty cool
Easy intro to rock power chords and simple boogie-woogie baselines. The beginner should have a lot of fun with this.

Superb rock intro. Go for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Start here.
I spent about $80 on instructional videos and books to learn how to play guitar, this book is the only one that would recommend to others. Every other "beginners" book had me trying three finger cords and progressions from the start.
Frustration! This book has you playing riffs from modern rock songs string by string, one or two finger chords - you will actually playing music that sound cool, not Kindergarten sing-a-long crap. EVERY instructional for beginners should start this way. Highly recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Familiar songs, easy to play piano
This book has a great selection of songs. I remember a lot of these songs from my childhood. The accompaniment for most of the songs is easy. My only concern is how difficult it is to keep the book open on a music stand. It's a big book with thick binding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!

My friend teaches kindergarten in a rural school nearby and she accepted my gift of this remarkable song and book, not sure what to expect! But after playing the song Fire Truck and showing the book at the same time -- she reported the kids were excited, smiling and delighted!(and so were the parent helpers visitng that day!) Now they ask for it several times a day!
I gave the song and cd to another kindergarten teacher and she explained to both the afternoon and morning classes that I'd provided the song and book! They grinned and began to sing it for me!
Can't say enough about how fun this combination of song and CD are! ... Read more
