Book Description

Nina thinks her father is the best fiddler in the state, even in the whole country. She's sure he'll win the first-place prize at the fiddle contest. After all, he's planning to play his new tune, the one he wrote for her as a birthday present, "Nina's Waltz." But Nina's father can't perform that day. So another musician, one who has never played in front of strangers before, picks up his fiddle instead.... As heartfelt as a tune sung by father and child, this tenderly illustrated picture book resounds with love. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Power of Music
Nina learned how to play fiddle from her dad, an accomplished player.Nina's dad even wrote a waltz for her.He plans to perform it at a fiddlers' contest, hoping to bring both joy to his daughter and some money to his family. But when Nina and her dad arrive at the contest site, something unexpected happens and Nina is forced to face her fears.

NINA'S WALTZ teaches children (and adults) some beautiful lessons.First, music comes from the soul and is capable of elevating the human spirit to incredible heights. The book also teaches the value of contentment, love for family, and a passion for music.I hope that many children will read this book or have it read to them.We need more children who are in love with reading and music.Wouldn't that make the world a better place? ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but not complete
Although this book is definitely a lot of fun (and a great companion to the movie "Really Rosie") please note that it does not include all of the original illustrations from the Nutshell books. Each Nutshell book is condensed down to a few pages in this compilation.

For toddlers, alligators all around is much more fun on 52 pages than on one page.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's a script, not a book.
Decided to purchase this based on my love of the Nutshell Kids segments in the Scholastic Video Series and rave reviews by others of Really Rosie. It was not what I expected. It is perfect if you want to put on a production of Really Rosie. It's also perfect if want the sheet music for the musical numbers. But if you want to read Pierre, Alligators All Around, One Was Johnny, and Chicken Soup With Rice in book form, I highly recommend the box set on offer; my 3-year-old loves them.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm Really Rosie...And I'm Rosie Real...
Really Rosie was, without a doubt, my favorite character growing up. I knew all the songs, and wore out the record. I finally bought another copy two years ago when I was hunting for the perfect gift for a friend's 5-year-old daughter, and I still knew all the words! This spunky heroine is a great example for any shy young girl - she's imaginative, creative, confident and a leader. And don't we need more of that nowadays from young women!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply The Best...
This is a truly wonderful book. I worked in a day care for 15 years. We had movie day every Wed. This was one of the kids all time favorites favorite movies. And the book is just as great. Definitly one of my favorites. Right there next to "Where The Wild Things Are".

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book. I recommend getting the audio tape as well.
I grew up listening to Really Rosie (by Carol King) and following along in this book. I'm 32 now and still like to sing the songs with my family, when we get together. It's a great way to get children interested in creating highly imaginative situations and promotes group entertainment among a diverse age range. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My 7 year old loves it!
My daughter and I were more than pleased with this math CD. I'm pleased with the music style -catchy tune AND understandable, no rap. I also like the fact that each addition is repeated. Although my daughter knows how to add she still uses her fingers sometimes, I have found that this has helped her to memorize facts more easily. The singing book that comes along is a big plus! I would also recommend the Multiplication unplugged because it teaches how to count by 2s,3s,etc. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the original
I bought this collection for my little one because I really loved it when I was her age. Although the songs are all the same, I was disappointed to discover that the singers and arrangements have changed. Some of the new voices are so annoying and caricature-like that it's difficult to sing along. I wish they would have just re-released the original! My daughter seems to like "Veggie Tales" and "Not for Kids Only" much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Selection of Silly Songs
My Sister and I when we were little used to love to sing along with Books and Tapes in the Wee Sing Series, especially this one, because we have always loved to laugh. The Wee Sing books and tapes will take children into a world of fun, they can learn wonderful things from these tapes. However, it never has to seem like learning. That's part of the magic. For on these recorded tours, your childrens tourguides are singers and actors. If you have children be sure to buy this tape you'll laugh your head off with them. My sister and I eventually outgrew these tapes, but I kept them, even copied them onto blank audiotapes so I could give them as gifts to people who have children. Now if only Pam Beall and Susan Nipp could make a sequel to this one and call it Wee Sing More Silly Songs. ... Read more

Book Description

To ev'rything
there is a season
and a time
for ev'ry purpose
under heaven.

For thousands of years Ecclesiastes' beautiful words have inspired and given solace to people all over the world.

Pete Seeger was so moved by these words that he set the psalm to music and added a refrain and a line of his own. "Turn! Turn! Turn!" was recorded in 1962 by the Byrds. You can still hear the song on the radio today -- more than forty years later.

Now Wendy Anderson Halperin lends her talent and artistic vision to the famous song, creating a book like no other. Wendy's art invites you to turn, turn, turn the pages and investigate all the different ways people live and laugh, love and mourn, and the ways in which war and peace affect humanity.

It's your turn now, to read the words of Ecclesiastes, listen to Pete Seeger's music, gaze at Wendy Anderson Halperin's illustrations, and contemplate what being human is all about. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sing Sophie is a treasure
As Sophie Adams says, "I looooooooove to sing!" and so she does. This is a really special book. Charming story line with a real cowgirl twang to the language. Great illustrations that add to the story. And, songs...wonderful songs that Sophie makes up and sings to her family. And you'll sing too. It's impossible not to. A family favorite and a must for all home libraries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Serious FUN!
I don't know how I found this book for my daughter, but it is our favorite. I read the entire story in a southern drawl and sing all of Sophie's songs off key, loud and twangie until we laugh ourselves silly! All this fun sends my daughter off to happy dreams, and sends me off with a smile on my face for the rest of the night. This is not just a story- this is ENTERTAINMENT!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The story of America's Pied Piper of Classical Music
The cover cartoon of Mike Venezia's look at Leonard Bernstein for the Getting to Know the World's Greatest Composers has the subject playing the piano, composing, conducting, writing a book, and putting on a TV series for kids. That last one is how most of my generation probably first encountered Bernstein, whose "Young People's Concerts" did more to promote classical music in this country than anything else in our lifetime. Eventually, once Bernstein explained to us what was happening in a Beethoven symphony we learned that this man could not only teach us about great music he could also write some as well. Eventually, if our lessons in music appreciation continued, we would understand why he was also a dynamic conductor.

Of course Venezia provides an entertaining biography of Bernstein, which combines basic biographical information with career highlights and a half-dozen entertaining cartoons. Venezia also names some of Bernstein's greatest compositions, such as the scores for "West Side Story" and "Candide," and urges his young readers to seek out this music as well as the videos of Bernstein's lecture-concerts for young people that are still available on videotape. Reading about Bernstein or any other composer without being exposed to the music is just flat out wrong. There are several excellent "hits" collections of Bernstein's work as well as Broadway cast albums and film soundtracks that can bring his music alive for young students. I have also believed for a long time that nobody did a better job of conducting Beethoven's symphonies than Bernstein. Other volumes in the Getting to Know the World's Greatest Composers series look at the likes of not only Mozart and Tchaikovsky, but also Gershwin and the Beatles. However, this is the best volume I have read in this series to date. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A CHARMING MUSICAL MOUSE
A Mouse Called Wolf comes from the inventive mind of Dick King-Smith who gave us Babe: The Gallant Pig.

After watching his friends race across piano keys, wee Wolfgang Amadeus Mouse throws back his head and sings. Eventually he uses his voice to rescue the lady of the house. Wolf's antics are ably illustrated by Jon Goodell.

5-0 out of 5 stars Warm hearts
Dick King-Smith writes another fabulous book. This wonderful story of friendship and heroes is an inspiration to people of all ages. It speaks about friendship, family and aspiring to do your best. As always the characters come to life and become the readers new best friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars A charming children's story about music and aging
I read "A Mouse Called Wolf" after several students in the elementary school where I am the librarian urged me to read it. They told me I'd love it and they were right!

This is a charming story about a mouse who discovers he can sing, in the process saving his sibling mice from the cat in the house and becoming the companion of elderly Mrs. Honeybee who teaches Wolf new songs on her piano.

It's a simple and appealing story line, but I applaud Dick King-Smith for tackling two subjects not usually found in children's literature. On the one hand he skillfully interweaves musical terms and concepts, and on the other hand he paints a sympathetic portrait of the life of an elderly widow living alone.

This delightful tale should be welcome in the home of musical families or where children need a glimpse into the life of a lonely senior citizen. The adult readers of this story will have many private chuckles over the tunes Mrs. Honeybee chooses to teach her singing mouse: everything from the Beatles' "Help!" to showtunes such as "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'."

5-0 out of 5 stars Lookng for A Mouse Called Wolf
A Mouse Called Wolf By: Dick King - Smith

A Mouse Called Wolf is a great story! Wolf's real name is Wolfgang Amadeus. Wolf lives with his mother and twelve other children in a mouse hole in the house of Mrs. Honeybee. In the book he learns how to sing, the songs are really cute. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes animal stories and funny stories. In the book Wolf composes a song. The book is easy to read. I really liked reading this book! By: Laura

"Clop" a rhythm like a pony! Take the musical tree elevator! MeetQuentin Quarter Note! With this lively, toe-tapping, time-keeping interactive book, aspiring young musicians pull tabs, flip flaps, and tickle the ivories of a real battery-run electronic keyboard (three SR1130 batteries included). Soon everyone will be reading music! Friendly critters introduce each of the basic musical elements: rhythm, notes, time signatures, the staff, scales, sharps and flats, and key signatures. Fabulous images ensure that the learning will be lifelong--a plump elephant sits on a note to make it flatter. Rock-'n'-rolling "Beetles" teach an easy way to remember the order of notes on a staff: "Even Groovy Bats Drink Fly-juice." The amount of color, creatures, and information on each page may be a trifle overwhelming, but it leaves no doubt that there will be something new to discover with every reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Amazing Pop-Up Music Book
This is a wonderful book for all ages. Each page is a delight with its dancing characters and fun tabs to pull. The information is easy for children to assimilate. I especially enjoyed the real keyboard. And the last page is eye popping. My sister, a piano teacher, covets my copy. I may have to get her one for her birthday.

2-0 out of 5 stars Can't make the keyboard work
The keyboard feature in the copy I bought from Amazon.com does not work. I can't tell whether this is because the batteries are dead or not included, because I CANNOT FIGURE OUT HOW TO OPEN UP THE BATTERY COMPARTMENT! The instructions on the back say to use a screwdriver to remove the battery cover, but there are no screws visible and I cannot figure out what else I might possibly be able to move with a screwdriver. This might be a very neat book to have IF you can get the keyboard to work, but I really can't tell.

4-0 out of 5 stars Music simplified and entertainingly illustrated.
This book is a feast for the eyes as well as a playground for the fingers. When we picked up this book my 8 year old daughter could'nt put it down. She was engaged by all of the colorful pictures and enamored by the pull tab activities that literally fill each page. Basic music principles are covered on each page. You'll be surprised at just how far this book takes your child on the road to understanding music. There is a musical keyboard built in to the book so new concepts can be imediately used. I wish I had this book as a kid. It sure beats any piano book I ever sat in front of and crossed my eyes at! Bravo! ... Read more

Book Description

If nobody wants him, that's fine. He'll just take care of himself.

When his father dies, Dave knows nothing will ever be thesame. And then it happens. Dave lands in an orphanage -- the cold and strict Hebrew Home for Boys in Harlem -- far from the life he knew on the Lower East Side. But he's not so worried. He knows he'll be okay. He always is. If it doesn't work out, he'll just leave, find a better place to stay. But it's not that simple.

Outside the gates of the orphanage, the nighttime streets of Harlem buzz with jazz musicians and swindlers; exclusive parties and mystifying strangers. Inside, another world unfolds, thick with rare friendships and bitter enemies. Perhaps somewhere, among it all, Dave can find a place that feels like home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing story and wonderful plot.
A Gail Carson Levine success! This book is a compelling read and will have you finish it quickly. Dave Caros is a Jewish rascal living in New York city with his father, Abraham Caros, his brother, Gideon, and his father's wife ,Ida, who doesn't care beans about Gideon or Dave. Out of the blue one day Abraham Caros breaks his neck when he is out. After the funeral processing Ida begins to complain and make relatives have sympathy for her by saying out loud, "How can I raise these 2 kids. I can't take them. Somebody take them." Gideon is lucky and his uncle takes him, but no one claims Dave. Dave is instead sent to HHB Hebrew Home For Boys also known as Hell Hole for Brats. Dave takes a special carving that his father gave him with him and it is taken away by Mr.Meltzer, the mean, money lover, who takes care of the elevens. Dave doesn't hesitate on plans to get his carving and run away. During this book Dave finds friends who are loyal to death, a lovely girl who he becomes friends with, a mad superintendent who will even kill students for all he cares if they insult him, and how to forgive relatives who should have been forgiven a while back. This is a good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dave at Night
This book is one of the best books I have read in a long time. This book is about Dave, an orphan, who is sent to the HHB (Hebrew Home for Boys, or Hell Hole for Brats as the orphans there call it,) after his father is killed in an accident and his other relatives are not able to take him in. The moment Dave arrives at the HHB, he wants to leave. He plans to run away, but then discovers his precious carving (the only thing he has that belonged to his father,) has been taken away by the dreaded Mr. Doom. So he makes a plan: he will get the carving and then run away. But as soon as Dave spends some time in the HHB, he has second thoughts about his plan. Sure, he is always freezing, the food partions are meager and disgusting, most of his teachers are boring and he gets hurt by Mr. Doom, but some good things also happen. For example, Dave develops a close bond with the other boys at the HHB, and they become "buddies." He sneaks out and meets Solly, through whom he meets the beatiful Irma Lee. He is invited to parties, where is he escorted by Solly who tells the workers at the HHB that he is Dave's grandfather. Suddenly, Dave finds himself torn between two choices. Should he stay at the HHB with all his "buddies," with his art teacher who gives him special lessons because Dave has "a gift," and where he can eat delicous food on visitors day? Or should he leave and go live in Irma Lee's basement, living a life of luxury and endless partying, but leave all his friends at the HHB behind? Read Dave at Night and you will find the answer to all these questions. Dave at Night is fast-paced and fun, and is a great read. Buy it for yourself to see!

4-0 out of 5 stars READ THIS!!!
Do you know anyone who lives in an orphanage? I do. His name is Dave Caros in the book. After his father died, life was tough for Dave. Ida his step-mother, didn't have enough money to take care of him. She took the troublesome boy to an evil orphanage in New York City. Mr. Bloom, the orphanages superintendent, took Dave's only memento from his father. Dave is determined to get it back. He also wants to run away from the horrible place to live with his good friend, Solly. The conflict in this book is Mr. Bloom vs. Dave. This is because Dave wants his carving back while Mr. Bloom won't return it to him. I think the theme was think before you act. You never know what kind of trouble you'll get into. I definitely give this book 4 stars. Everything was well done, except the book could've used more description. I recommend this book to anyone who likes suspense and adventure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dave at Night Review
If you like adventures this is the book for you. A boy who's father dies and no one else wants him goes to live in an orpahanage. This could be one of Gail Levines best book yet. Dave At Night is great and I highly recommend it to kids age 12 to 14. Gail Levine makes this book come alive. He's an orphin by day magician by night.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dave At Night
Dave At Night was rated from 1 to 5 and it was a 4.5 stars. I would give it a 5 because this story is sort of adventure and a little history in it. This kid named Dave went a school full of rich kids. One day he came home something happened to his father. His step-mother sent him to an orphanage it is called the HHB. One night Dave sneaks out of the orphanage and went out to see places near the orphanage. Then he met his grandfather and they did some fun things. One night he goes out but doesn't come back and at the end his grandfather tells them he is going with them. The warden that was there was very mad, but he showed only a smile but he was furious.
He said that he can go but he was very wired that the kid would protest to how they treated the children there. I gave this book a 5 because it was a good book to read, and I hope you will like it too. ... Read more

I love this book! It is so much fun to read aloud and kids love it. I've been fortunate enough to hear the author and illustrator read this book to kids and they were mezmarized. The language is as musical as its subject and the illustrations are true to the times and bring Bartolomeo to life. Kudos to Suzanne Guy and Donna Lacey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational and entertaining!
"The Music Box - The Story of Cristofori" is a unique educational story about the invention of the piano. In a wonderful and clear fashion, children (and adults) learn about music before the piano existed and discover the mechanical-musical genius of Cristofori's invention. Additional pages at the end of the book give more specific information about the piano and the inventor. Recommended for all children to encourage exploration. Also suggested for elementary classes and all music teachers...Dr. Kathleen Kain, scientist and educator.

5-0 out of 5 stars STORY OF CHRISTOFORI/PIANO
I love this book. Any young person studing music should read this book. It not only familiarizes kids(not to mention adults) with the story of the most important person in the history of the piano, but it has a section that teaches about the piano and how it works. Ive read it a bunch of times and look back on it regularly. Parents dont always think their kid taking piano lessons needs music books like they need school books, but they do. This book goes well in a young persons bedtime reading library. ... Read more
