4-0 out of 5 stars The Hardy Boys Capture Clever Car Crooks
A string of car robberies have piqued the Hardy Boy's interest. It appears as though the car thieves regularly elude the police even when the police are hot on their trail. When the Hardy Boys put their minds to the mystery what they discover is that the car crooks are even cleverer than they could ever have suspected.

We follow the Hardy Boys as they try to prove that the Dodds, who car thieves framed and then disappeared, had nothing to do with the thefts.Eventually the Hardy Boys discover that the car thieves have plans far more nefarious than simply stealing cars.

While searching for the car thieves the boys also learn that there is a Dodd family mystery involving missing treasure. The boys also wonder what the mysterious spider-man has to do with the mystery. And why does a certain farmer always seem to be plowing his fields without lights in the middle of the night? As the story nears its conclusion the boys will use a car as a Trojan horse to attempt to trap the thieves. What will happen when the thieves discover the boys? There are many mysteries for the boys to solve. The boys learn that their father has an important mystery of his own, but in the end it turns out that their father's mystery and theirs may be related.

This mystery is one of the most intriguing Hardy Boys mysteries. The author managed to change a simple car theft story into a puzzle for the Hardy Boys. The author also mixed in additional story elements to be sure that it would be relatively difficult for the Hardy Boys to solve the mystery.

As a side note, this mystery has a cave as a key element. It appears that the author was in a cave mood, because caves appeared in each of the previous four stories, and continue to appear in the next stories.Just goes to show how versatile caves can be.

Though the Hardy Boys series is written in a relatively archaic fashion, as reading material for an increasingly younger audience they are excellent. The stories were once recommended for children ages 10 to 14.As children are exposed to more violence and seem to require greater levels of stimulation, the recommended age range has move to 9 to 12.I think any child capable of reading some of the challenging words in these books will enjoy them, regardless of how tame most of the action may be.Once a child has reached age 12 or so the stories may be of less interest, but given the combination of mystery and action, these books remain good safe choices for parents who want to know what their children are reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love the Hardy Boys!
This book was Super! I liked pretending I was one of the Hardy Boys. I also tried working out the mysteries with the book. I liked it when they found the Hidden Hideout. I also liked when they spied. I like spying on people myself. I also liked their motorcycles. I loved it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good; Not As Good As The Original
This review concerns the revised 1964 edition.Jack Dodd, a schoolmate of the Hardy's, asks Frank and Joe to solve a family mystery involving a treasure hidden during Pilgrim times. However, after Jack and his father are accused of stealing cars along the Shore Road, they disappear.Did the Dodds go onto hiding so that they could search for the treasure?Did they run away because they are guilty?Or were they kidnapped to make it look as if they ran away?Frank, Joe and Chet work to find the answer and solve the mysteries. This book was quite good; it has a realistic plot, plenty of action and was generally enjoyable.Nonetheless, I prefer the original edition to the revised. The original edition was better written as to the flow of the book and the language used. The Pilgrim mystery, which was not a part of the original, felt tacked on and was not woven into the story very well in my opinion. Both editions are worth reading and since they are only similar in their basic plot and only slightly similar in their endings, I think that most fans could read one and then not feel bored reading the second one later. However, if you're only going to read one, I'd say to go with the original.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not As Good As The Original
The Shore Road Mystery re-write wasn't nearly as good as the original, wherein Frank and Joe bought a used fancy car, fixed it up, and hid in the trunk.Their Trojan Horse technique carried them right into the lair of the auto thieves; after numerous exciting brushes with danger, they were able to escape and bring back the police.

The re-write wasn't nearly as tense. It's possible that was purposeful. At the end of the original, Fenton Hardy muted his pride for his sons' accomplishment with the admonition that their tactic had simply been too dangerous, and they could have been seriously injured or worse.

But that's what made the book good.Kids enjoy stories of that nature because nothing like that ever happens to teens in real life.Really, how many teams of teen-brother detectives do you think are operating in the USA just now, solving crimes and mysteries every other week (while owning cars, motorcycles, ice boats, airplanes, you name it)? This is fiction, it's escapism, it's fun and it's supposed to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Mystery
This review concerns the 1928 edition.A string of auto thefts along the Shore Road has baffled the Bayport police force. When a school friend of the Hardy's and his father are accused, Frank and Joe decide to track down the thieves.A well-written book, like all of the low-numbered original editions; this book has an interesting plot, plenty of excitement and a little bit of humor. As well, unlike in the three previous volumes of the series, the criminals did not simply give up upon being cornered which kept the ending from being anticlimatic. All in all, a great book. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Slightly Better Than The Original
This review concerns the revised 1966 edition. Frank and Joe help their father investigate for a shipping line which suspects that the owner of a valuable Egyptian treasure is trying to defraud their insurance company by claiming that the treasure was aboard their freighter, the Katawa, when it sank off Whalebone Island near Bayport. Also, Frank and Joe are haunted by the ghost of a pirate said to have haunted Whalebone Island years ago. This book sounds like it shouldn't be bad, but for whatever reason I never found that I was very interested in it. Very few of the chapter endings left me with the feeling that I had to read more. That said, for anyone who is going to read this title, read the revised edition because it is better than the original, which completely lacked a mystery and was really nothing more than an adventure story.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT ONE
THIS STORY IS A PRETTY GOOD ONE IN THE SERIES. IT BASICALLY BEGINS WHEN THE HARDYS GET A NO NAMER THREAT FROM EGYPT, THEN THEY SEE A GHOST OF A PIRATE FROM THE 18TH CENTURY THAT APPARENTLY HAS HAUNTED WHALEBONE ISLAND YEARS AGO HAS NOW RE-APPEARED. THE OWNER OF THE GOLD HEAD OF PHAROAH RHAMATON 4 LOST THIS HEAD ON THE SHIP AND THEN THE SHIP SANK. THEY HARDYS INVESTIGATE THIS MATTER AND IN DOING SO ALMOST GET BLOWN UP. THEIR FATHER, DET. FENTON HARDY. GETS HIS BUTT KICKED AT LEAST 2 TIMES IN THIS STORY. THAT'S WHAT ESPECIALLY LIKE ABOUT THIS BOOK. JUST READ THE BOOK I AM NOT GOING TO EXPLAIN IT ALL TO YOU!! IT HAS A GREAT STORY LINE THAT MAKES YOU WANT TO KEEP READING. I READ THE WHOLE BOOK IN 1 DAY! EVEN SHORTER!! BUY THE BOOK!! YOU WON'T BE SORRY

4-0 out of 5 stars review for the secret warning
I think that The Secret Warning is an average read. What I mean by average is that it is no more exciting in comparison with the other books Franklin wrote. That is why I gave it a four out of five points. The reason why I didn?t give it a perfect score is because of its lack of interest. I think that the whole story itself could have been more interesting if it had a more original plot. It is not a mystery like I expected it to be; it was more like an adventure story. Judging by what it said on the back of the book, I thought it would be a mystery story. Instead it turned out to be a plain adventure. This story is about an island that the boys visit to find a hidden treasure. Someone tells the boys to leave the island fast before they perish. The Hardy?s do as they are told, but they come back to see who is threatening to kill them. This time they get shot at. Luckily, all of the bullets miss them. So, instead of going back to the island, they research the island?s history to learn about its residents. Once they do that, they are able to figure out who shot at them. However, the reason for the shooting is more difficult to figure out. They later find out that there is a treasure there after all, and the residents naturally do not want anyone to know about it. In the end, the person who shoots at them gets arrested, and the treasure's secret place remains his secret.
I think this is a predictable story, and that is why I give it a 4 out of five.

2-0 out of 5 stars This One's Not Good
This review concerns the original 1938 edition. Frank, Joe and Chet join a deep-sea diving operaton that is trying to recover a fortune in gold and jewels from a sunken oceanliner. While this book is not as awful as the really bad volumes of the series, it isn't good and is probably more deserving of 1.5 stars than the 2 star rating that I gave it. There is no mystery in this book; it is more of an adventure story. Frank and Joe meet a deep-sea diver who mistakenly leaves their home with some of Mr. Hardy's papers, so Frank and Joe must track him down to retrieve the papers. Upon completion of this they are asked to remain with the diving operation which is raising a ship. Once this is over, they remain with the crew which then moves on to the recovery of the treasure from the oceanliner. Because the book moves from one phase to another I found it very choppy and the first 150, or so, pages were rather boring and unimportant. The criminals in the book seem more like two-bit hoodlums than anything else and their motive for hating the Hardys is rather weak. As far as the writing is concerned, the book is lacking in the rich language and well-described scenes that characterize the low volumes of the original editions. For fans who are also interested in deep-sea diving, you may want to read this book because there is plenty of that, but otherwise don't bother with this one because you'll only find yourself hoping that the end comes soon so that you can get finished this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I think it is a very good book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Winner for Cam Jansen!
Cam Jansen fans you will not be disppointed. This is another good Cam Jansen mystery. Cam and her family are picking up her Aunt Mary from the airport after her trip to France. At the same time they are having a suprise party. Of course everything does not go as planned. Aunt Mary can't find her bag, the suprise party is about to be ruined, and a little girl from the flight is missing. Aunt Mary knows that she was on the plane, but the little girl can not be found anywhere. Cam uses her detective skills to figure out where the missing girl has gone. A hint - your first guess may not be right. Mine wasn't! Cam Jansen books are excellent for beginning readers and also for parents who read alot of stories (like I do) to children. The fact that the main character is a girl is lost on children because her name is "Cam" so even my boys like her books. I can't wait until the next one comes out! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Alright, But Not One Of The Best
This review concerns the original 1950 edition as well as the revised 1967 edition which is similar to the original, only it is shorter. A friend of Mr. Drew's from Boston, Capt. Easterly, is hoping to buy the ship on which he is currently living. However, the owner doesn't have a clear title to the ship and is unable to sell it. Capt. Easterly asks Mr. Drew to look into the matter since no record of the previous owners can be found. Also, mysterious prowlers have been on board the ship, apparently looking for something. Nancy, Mr. Drew and, later, Bess and George go to Boston to help solve the mysteries. This book is alright, it is written fairly well, the mystery is somewhat interesting and there is some action. However, it is not among my favorite books of the series. I found that many times it was by random circumstance that Nancy picked up important clues. For example, they take the boat out of Boston Harbor and sail to an arbitrarily picked cove. While in a village on the cove, Nancy gets important clues to the real name of the ship and to the location of its lost figurehead. The book is worth reading, but I don't think that too many fans will count this one among their top 5 favorites.

3-0 out of 5 stars Im not saying it's a bad book but....
Ok, i have to admit that this book wasn't as good as people told me it was. i'm not saying anybody shouldn't read it but well once you start the book it's REALLY boring.this wasn't the most suspenceful books either. it only got good at the end. i would have to say don't buy this book, rent it first from a library and see if you like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! I liked this one!
This time Nancy is asked to solve a case to help Captain Easterly uncover the mysterious ghostly prowlers that has been having.

Nancy, Bess and George set out on the ship and take residence on it as they try to solve the mystery. They try to help Captain Easterly find the old, wooden lady that used to go in the front of his boat. The girls try to find information about the wooden lady, but nothing is under the Bonny Scot's name. Going deeper they find out that there is a treausre on-board and the prowlers want it! Hopefully they will find it before the visitors do!

This by far is my favorite book! I really liked this one. It was exciting in a lot of parts and I like stories about pirate treasure! Carolyn Keene did a good job on this one. Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL book with a cliff-hanger at every chapter.
As Nancy's father is asked to meet an old friend in Boston, she is told the reason why. Captin Easterly says there has been ghost on his ship. When Captin Easterly was going to buy the ship, the owner finds out that the ship never belonged to his uncle, where he got the boat from. Without proof to who the ship belongs to he is not willing to sell the ship. As Nancy, Bess, and George sleuth they find the original name of th eboat, where the figurehead dissapeared to, and the secret in the boat. Carolyn Keene discribes everything so detailed you feel like your Nancy yourself!

4-0 out of 5 stars good written mystery !
nancy is asked by captain easterly to find out who his mysterious vistitor is. he also wants nancy to find the lost figure head that was lost many years before . then nancy finds the BONNY SCOT was not the clipper's true name! so now i'll let you read the book to find out what happens next. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars (...)Amazing Story of the Bicycle Mystery
I thought this was a very good book. When the reader was reading the story I realized that the children in the book were very helpful. I think that this would be a goood book for people to read. This is a good book for children because when they read it it will help them be more respectful when they grow up. So its a good book as you can see.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite One!
I like this book because I love bycicles. It's neat how they go back and see things they saw in other books. And I wish my dog acted like the little dog Shadow, whom the boxcar children found. It was fun finding out whose dog it was! I would deffinantly recommend this book to anyone, and especially to boxcar children fans. READ THIS BOOK!

4-0 out of 5 stars There is a New Detective in Town
That Sammy Keyes is such a detective. Nancy Drew better watch out there is a 7th grade crime solving detective on the case. I like this book a lot because there is a 7th grader solving mysteries. I mean she is an ordinary kid in middle school going through what real 7th graders go through and she still solves mysteries and she won't give up on them no matter how long it takes her. She goes through controversy and things like that. This book "Sammy Keyes and the Sisters of Mercy" is a very good book. I recommend all of you guys to read it. I am not a mystery type person, but still this is a book for mystery or non-mystery type people should read. This book is better than another Sammy Keyes book I read and I would have given that book almost 4 stars. I only read three books of Sammy Keyes, but I can't wait until I get my hands on another Sammy Keyes book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too predictable for me.....
Okay, I love the Sammy Keyes series, but I recently finished this book and let me tell you, I knew exactly who the guilty party/parties were from the beginning. Usually, there are a lot of twists and turns in this series. Unfortunately, that was not the case in this book. While I love Sammy, in this one the facts were slapping her in the face and she didn't realize it until the end, which is pretty hard to believe if you've read any of the other books; usually Sammy is pretty much "on the ball". An enjoyable read for me, mainly because I am a mystery fan, but not a great guessing game as to who-did-it. I'd dare to say that ANY of the other Sammy Keyes books would probably be a better choice for a reader who is new to the series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sammy
I loved this book! Sammy a mischevious young sleuth finds herself inside another mystery. A homeless girl with hightops, a stolen mitt, and a crazy bunch of singing nuns help Sammy and her friends solve the mystery for a priest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Not my favorite in the series, but I highly recommend it. Singing nuns? Gotta be interesting... Check this book out.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Better
I have to admit that this book was good when you looked at it in some ways. But, like some people said, this book was VERY slow which could bore a lot of people easily. Another thing was that this book was very unrealistic. It's like, how can one 12 year old girl manage to outsmart a group of professional theives. It just seems impossible. Overall, this book was just plain average, so I say if you want to read it, read it. If you don't want to read it, then don't. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Small Hints of Chet Gecko and Farewell My Lunchbag
This is a really good book to read for ages 8-12. There are a lot of interesting things you get to learn in the book, cool characters, and also funny sentences. Also, I think this book is great because once it gets very interesting it doesnt let you put the book down. You just want to read it until the end and then more Bruce Hale books of Chet Gecko!

4-0 out of 5 stars Farewell my Lunchbag
Wow that book is really amazing! if you havent read it you really should. the reason I like thie book is you think it is one thing but then the theif turns out to be someone u dont really suspect. For example (I am not going to use what the book said because I dont want to give any thing away, to new readers) as I was saying say that before Chet gets knocked out he thinks he saw a (example) slug. but then he hears about something else sneaking around the school a Snail. then the theif turs out to be the snail (example). I really enjoy the book, like I do with other books, that have other books connectied to it.If the author reads this I hope that you see my point for this book. Thank you I hade a pleasure reading it.

Scooby and the gang are in Hollywood to watch the filming of a movie, THE SANDS OF CAIRO, live on set courtesy of Daphne's uncle. Shaggy and Scooby soon discover the abundance of food, while the rest of the gang becomes suspicious of strange going-ons (pillars collapsing, tents blowing down, fake coconuts falling) that are apparently the result of a mummy's curse that has fallen on the movie set. The book is filled with great illustrations and the story is fun to read. I especially enjoyed this book in the series because it takes place in Hollywood.

4-0 out of 5 stars The chocolate sundae mystery
I read The Chocolate Sundae Mystery.
I thought it was a very good book because it was easy to read. It is a "boxcar children mystery" and the ice cream disappears and all the whipping cream has gone sour in Greenfield. I think 8 to 13 ages should read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Mystery.
THE CHOCOLATE SUNDAE MYSTERY is the second best Boxcar Children book besides THE HOME RUN MYSTERY & THE MYSTERY IN THE EMPTY SAFE. I can't decide between those two. I love the excitement and suspense. I was mad when my dad said it was time to go to bed right at the climax. A+

This book is awsome. There is alot of suspence. I think it is the best boxcar children book of them all. The kids get a summer job at an icecream shop. When strange things start happening they dig deeper. This is a good book I recomend it.

Book Description

In these two wickedly funny, criminally punny mysteries from Chet Gecko's tattered casebook, the detective and his trusty mockingbird associate, Natalie Attired, keep law and order in the halls of Emerson Elementary.

Right in the middle of a run-of-the-mill case, the powers that be finger Chet's fine-feathered partner, Natalie Attired, as a no-goodnik blackmailer and boot her out of Emerson Hicky quicker than you can say, "Boot her out of Emerson Hicky."

Chet, of course, tackles the case for free. Mess with his partner, mess with--well, somebody. (Natalie's the brains of the outfit.) But just when Chet thinks he might clear her name, Natalie disappears, leaving behind a reddish smear that looks kind of like cherry ladybug jam . . . Is it murder, or something serious?

5-0 out of 5 stars My 5 year old loved this book.
My 5 year old son brought this book home from the library. He got very interested in the story. Since it was our first Nate the Great Mystery, it gave a craving for more. Next we read Nate the Great and the Missing Key. Now we're hooked on these series of books and we own the set.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nate the Great Stalks Stupidweed
Of all of the Nate the Great books, this one is the worst. I could not get interested in this story because Nate was reduced to looking for a weed. Isn't there more interesting puzzles for him to solve and things to find than a weed? ... Read more

Book Description

Chet Gecko loves a good mystery. Almost more than he loves his fee--stinkbug pie.
So when fellow fourth grader Shirley Chameleon asks him to find her missing brother, Billy, Chet expects the case to be as easy a pie. But Billy's disappearance is part of a larger plot, one that involves the Rat Sisters, a riddling junkyard dog, and a vicious Gila monster named Herman. If Chet doesn't solve the case fast, the entire school could be humiliated. Worst of all, Chet might not get his fee. And Chet's hungry. . . .

3-0 out of 5 stars The Chameleon Wore Chartreuse
Chet Gecko is a lizard with an attitude. He's also the guy to go to if you have a mystery to solve at Emerson Hicky Elementary School. In the first book of the Chet Gecko mystery series, The Chameleon Wore Chartreuse, Shirley the Chameleon asks for Chet's help in locating her missing brother, a troublesome first grader named Billy. With the promise of a piece of stinkbug pie and a "cootie" filled kiss from Shirley, Chet sets off to solve the mystery.

His detective work leads him to an assortment of unsavory characters: the Rat sisters, who steal his lunch and give him misleading clues; two frightening teachers, Mrs. Toaden (a toad) and Mrs. Glick (an alligator), who almost prevent Chet from solving his case; and Herman the Gila Monster, a huge, poisonous, sixth grade football player, who is up to something bad. With the help of a mockingbird friend named Natalie Attired, Chet finds his way in and out of the classroom in his rush to solve the mystery before the football game that afternoon.

Author Bruce Hale narrates the story from Chet's point of view, and Chet's smart, cool attitude is portrayed through his thoughts and dialogue. Unique, humorous descriptions serve to highlight each character. However, the sheer number of characters makes the story a bit confusing to follow and doesn't allow the reader to connect as well with the main characters. The plot also drags on and on, and the final conflict doesn't seem to be important enough to take up a whole book. Also, the overly witty dialogue gets a bit redundant at times. Perhaps, for a child, the story is more intriguing than for me as an adult. (I'll have to test it out with my class.)

For kids looking for a good laugh and an unusual situation (such as a school consisting of mainly amphibians, reptiles, and rodents), this may be a decent book. While the mystery and plot wasn't particularly interesting, the characters themselves are fun to read about. The Chameleon Wore Chartreuse can be recommended as a light read for children ages 8 and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tons Of Fun
The jokes are great! It got me right from the start. An excellent introduction to an excellent series.

5-0 out of 5 stars My older brother liked it a lot too
The part when he solved the mystery the best except when he got kissed. That was very sick. I am reading the second book. My brother wants to read it too. I liked Chet and his partner the Mockingbird the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Chet" same character as pi (P.I.)
In Hebrew the character "Chet" is written the same way as the Greek character "pi" (any circle's circumference divided by its diameter = pi). So Chet's first name *sort of* means pi (P.I.: Private Investigator). Just another of Hale's endless, clever puns.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 4th grade class loved it!
This book was written in the style of an old Mickey Spillane novel... I found it extremely enjoyable to read to my class! Some parts were a little difficult to understand because of numerous similes... but it was a fun opportunity to work on the subtleties of language. My class wants to read all of the Chet Gecko mysteries now. I highly recommend it for your 9 or 10 year old! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Scooby solved it and made a little girl very happy.
My daughter is 2 and a half years old and loves scooby. I am amazed that the reading level states 4-8 years as she read alongside me quite easily - the picture clues helped her to feel that she was finally reading by herself. The story was far from being scary just really easy to enjoy, and since we both after about 5 days almost know the story to heart, I have since ordered all Scooby picture books - its just a little sad that we cant buy them over the counter in England. Thanks to the authors and Amazon for making this possible.. ... Read more
