4-0 out of 5 stars Suspense, Mystery
This was a fairly good Hardy Boys book. Can't say it is the best though because other books have more suspense, mystery. However, this book was the first and therefore did not need to be the best. Frank and Joe Hardy are the sons of celebrated detective Fenton Hardy. Apparently even though it does not go into details, they just helped them on a case. They hear that the Tower Mansion, one of the bigges houses in town has been robbed. They find out that the suspected is one of their best friend's dad Henry Robinson. Using a lot of brainwork because of a deficit of details they figure out the solution of the mystery. To find out what it is, read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who stole Chet's hot rod?
This review is of the 1959 Revised Version of "The Tower Treasure". The first 38 titles in the series were revised over the course of 15 years (some with minor changes, others were completely re-written). "The Tower Treasure" is the first Hardy Boys mystery.

Starting out with Frank and Joe trying to track down the thief who stole the beloved yellow "hot rod" of their friend Chet Morton, the Hardy brothers find themselves in the midst of their first real mystery to investigate. The brothers discover the disguise the thief must have used. This leads them to seek help from their father, the famous investigator Fenton Hardy. Fenton and the boys suspect that there may be a connection to the recent robbery at the Tower mansion where the only suspect is the father of their friend, Slim. Neither Frank nor Joe believes that Slim's father could have possibly committed the crime and they are committed to clear his name before Slim's family is ruined.

I remember when I was much younger and was the age of the target audience of this novel. I could not get enough of the Hardy Boys and read each of the books several times over. Reading them a decade and a half later, I can still easily understand my obsession with the stories. "The Tower Treasure" is fast paced, interesting, and has a mystery that is begging to be solved (though this is one that can't necessarily be solved by the reader before the brothers solve it). It is fun to read through the Hardy Boys, and this is a good, clean, young adult adventure story (the series is more adventure than young adult). I can only hope that when I have children that they will enjoy the Hardy Boys as much as I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adventure books for kids
I read these books as a kid, they were written starting from the nineteen twenties. Our twelve year son old enjoys them now, and I expect that our eight year old will enjoy them in the future. They're a good alternative to Harry Potter, where magic and power over grownups plays the dominant role (the Hardy Boys more or less compete in skill with their father as detectives, although parents rarely appear in the stories). The Carolyn Keene mystery stories (Nancy Drew) are also equally good for both boys and girls, and could have been written by the same author! Even better, if you can find them: Ellery Queen Jr.'s mysteries (The Brown Fox Mystery, The Red Chipmunk Mystery, and three others).

How I got onto these books: my mother ordered and sold them from our office equipment business in a small Kentucky town in the fifties.

5-0 out of 5 stars Start of a Legacy
The Series: In 1927, Franklin W. Dixon launched the "Hardy Boys" books, a series of books telling of the exploits of Frank and Joe Hardy, the sons of a big-city detective. The Hardy boys lived out in the country and, with their friends, loved following in their father's sleuthing footsteps. The result was a set of wonderful amateur detective stories that I read as fast I could find when I was a kid. The Hardy Boys helped launch me on my lifelong reading binge.

This book: This was the first of the Hardy Boys mysteries. We get introduced to all the characters and are quickly thrown into a mystery involving a dying man's confession and buried treasure. Well-written, fast-paced, and just plain likable, this is a great book-gift for the young reader.

4-0 out of 5 stars What a Treasure!
I choose Tower Treasure because my teacher recommended it because I told her I was interested in mystery books, and it was a good choice.
This book is about two young teenage boys who want to be detectives like their father. They are out to solve a mystery of stolen jewels. This is a mystery they want to solve quick to clear a friend's father who is innocent.During their journey they find many clues, but to find out the amazing ending you'll have to read it.
I would recommend this book for readers who enjoy mystery books. It is exciting as you near the end,but you have to give it a chance in the beginning.I'm sure you'll enjoy this mystery book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As a girl I collected the whole series...Wonderful!
This series of books about Trixie Belden (the young girl detective) was very exciting for me growing up. I grew up on a farm like Trixie and identified with her character much more than Nancy Drew (the other option at the time). Trixie is a tomboy and manages to get herself into all types of scrapes that are both exciting and inventive. A must read for anyone with a girl age 8-15!

5-0 out of 5 stars I gew up to be Trixie Belden
As a young girl growing up in central Pa. I read and reread all the available Trixie Belden books, starting with this one. In my opinion, this was the original AND the best of the series available to me at that time. I daydreamed about being 13 years old and becoming a "detective." I was blonde and "smart" and wanted to be a detective just like her... Well, I grew up and moved to New Jersey and "became Trixie Belden." I mean that I eventually developed a very successful career ine Law Enforcement. One in which I spent the next 27 years, before retiring in 2000. I could never have predicted that I would become my childhood heroines, Trixie Belden and Nancy Drew. Woemn didn't become Detectives in those days...but I owe it mostly to Trixie and Honey and the mysterious mansion....

5-0 out of 5 stars Trixie, Honey and the Other Bob-Whites are Back!
Rereading the Trixie volumes is an annual summer celebration for me, and I am in my 50's.

I grew up reading about the adventures of Trixie and Honey. Since we did not live near a library, my mom would buy me two novels a week for pleasure reading during the summer. She picked up the SECRET OF THE MANSION after she noticed that in the first paragraph that the main character was "horse crazy," just like me! Actually, Volume #6 MYSTERY IN ARIZONA was my most favorite since it takes place closer to home and on a ranch.

That was it! I was hooked! I still have my original volumes and have collected many used ones in the entire collection. Since some of my volumes have increased in value, I would hesitate rereading them every year. So now I am buying the entire new collection (well, the first 15 that they are reprinting) in the library binding.

Also, I am hooked on audio books and am purchasing the audio books that they are making available.

What a treat! If you are revisiting the adventures as an adult, or introducing your sons and daughters to these wonderful and wholesome stories, happy reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars So Glad to See My Favorite Childhood Books back in Print!
About eight years ago, I wrote to the publisher of these books and asked them to PLEASE bring them back. I never heard from them, so I bought some old (and often smelly) ones on Ebay. While walking through Barnes and Noble one day, I saw them and was elated. I have bought the first four for my two girls, aged 9 and 11, and they LOVE them. They cannot wait for the rest to be published. March 23rd, for #5, just seems like so long to them, as they just cannot wait to read more Trixie Beldens. Good, clean fun for your girls (even though there are boy characters too). Although, the main character is 13, I think it is still okay for younger girls. In fact, many 13 year olds are quite mature these days, so maybe starting younger is better. When I was a girl, I actually preferred these books to Nancy Drew. I hope to find the time to read them all again myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Like I Remembered!
Very Highly Recommended!!! Move over Nancy Drew...the Bob-Whites are back in town!

I loved these books when I was a pre-teen...I had an entire set of the cameo paperbacks that I read over and over again. When I was in high school, my family moved and they were lost. I think I never got over that! Then, as a wonderful surprise, my family collected them from all over one year and gave them to me as a Christmas present.

The Trixie Belden mysteries always appealed to me more than Nancy Drew, and I think it was because the main characters (The Bob-Whites of the Glenn) were such lovable, individuals - each with a quirk of their own. Reading them as a 30-something, I can still enjoy them as I did years ago. There is no bad language (Gleeps!), and no sex...I can't even seem to remember if there was a single boy/girl kiss in the entire series. There are very minor boy/girl subplots, but it is more like friendly interest that isn't even dwelt on. The BWG's are great friends, always find an interesting mystery to solve and will be around for a very long time (this is about the 4th reprinting of the series) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review: The Clue in the Jewel book
The Clue in the Jewel Box by Carolyn Keene was an exciting novel. It is part of the Nancy Drew series. It was a little slow getting into the mystery, but after the mystery part of the book got started, it got really good. It was definitely a cliffhanger. Nancy helps a former queen from Europe find her long lost grandson. Before long, Nancy finds the prince, or so she thinks. Nancy catches the prince taking small amounts of money from the queen, Mrs. Alexandria. Her grandson is also has very bad manners for a prince. What's going on with the prince? Read the book to find out! If you enjoy this suspenseful book, be sure to read the rest of the series!

3-0 out of 5 stars Better Than I Thought It Would Be
This review concerns the original 1943 edition as well as the revised 1972 edition which is merely a shortened version of the original. Nancy meets an elderly lady, Mrs. Alexandra, who was formerly a queen in a European country. When a revolution erupted in the country, the woman's entire family perished except for her grandson who was brought to America by his nurse. When Mrs. Alexandra escaped to America, she was never able to find her grandson and hopes that Nancy could locate him for her. Also, pickpockets are at work in River Heights. To anyone that just read my summary of the book and thinks that it will be boring, don't let that stop you from reading this book; it is actually a fairly decent book. I liked the fact that through the course of the book, Nancy was fooled and used many times by the criminals to get away with their crimes, it made her seem more human and not like the SuperNancy we see in many of the books. However, in the end her intelligence and intuition won out over the criminals. I particularly thought that it was clever the way in which the pickpockets managed to fool Nancy. The book has a moderate amount of action, is written well and I found that for the most part it held my interest all the way through. I think that most Nancy Drew fans would enjoy reading it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A jewel of a book
This book was pretty good and it was interesting to read it. There was some really exiting parts and some really boring parts, but overall it was a good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book was a great suspense/thriller book. Nancy helps an elderly woman named Mrs. Alexandra. Nancy befriends her and learns she is a queen from a distant country. Mrs. Alexandra tells her of a long lost grandson, which she is determined to find. Nancy is trying to solve that mystery, when she notices many pick-pocket thefts in her town of River Heights. Nancy then finds out the two mystery's are connected, and Nancy is determined to solve it. Nancy figures out the confusing burglury of wallets, and finds the long lost grandson of Mrs. Alexandra. This is a wonderful book, like all Nancy Drew's.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Was Great

5-0 out of 5 stars Mysteries and Puzzles
Encyclopedia Brown is a 5th grade boy who solves puzzles, crimes and mysteries as easily and as unconsciously as breathing.

Each book is a series of short mysteries (5-10 pages each) ending with a question - usually "how did Encyclopedia know that X was responsible for the crime". The answer to each mystery is at the back of the book. Solving the mystery takes no special knowledge, but it does require paying attention to detail. Don't turn to the answer too fast.

This book is the third in the series, but the books do not have to be read in order. I loved the Encyclopedia Brown books when I was growing up. I am reading them again before I give them to my nephew who I hope will enjoy them as I did. (The target reading level is ages 9-12).

Adults who like this series may also enjoy the Lateral Thinking Puzzles books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Watch the Boy Work! Match Wits with Encyclopedia Brown
Teaching kids to observe, think, and have fun at the same time? Difficult? Not with the Encyclopedia Brown books!

This is actually the third book in the Encyclopedia Brown series by author Donald J. Sobol. In this volume, Encyclopedia Brown, the smartest kid in Idaville, tackles ten cases. Kids (and adults) will have a great time matching wits with Encyclopedia as they gather clues with him and seek to put together the pieces of the puzzle. If you can't crack the puzzles, don't worry: the solutions to each case appear at the end of the book.

These stories were first published in the 1960's, so they're a little dated, but they still provide loads of fun, and some of them are pretty tricky. If you'd like to develop critical thinking and observation skills in your kids, you can't go wrong with Encyclopedia Brown.

5-0 out of 5 stars 6-1/2 Year Old Twin Boys Enjoyed this A-Z Mystery Story
We really liked this book (Mom included). Josh, Dink and Ruth Rose worked well together to solve this mystery and catch the thief. We were all surprised about the ending. We wish we could cross-country ski all over our town! Ron Roy's stories always entertain us and we can't wait to get the next in the series - The Missing Mummy.

I wish I could win a seven million dollar lottery ticket for my very own. If you would like to win a lottery ticket, you will sure like this book, because the three best detectives in the whole wide world are in this book and they catch a real lottery ticket thief! The book is also set in winter, many kids favorite time of the year. Although my favorite A to Z Mystery book is The Absent Author, I think this one is pretty good, and I think you'll like it too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Missing: Detective Partner!
Nate the Great is a detective and a guy known for being able to find lost things or solve mysteries. However, in NATE THE GREAT AND THE BIG SNIFF, Nate experiences his most personal mystery of all when Sludge, his dog, detective partner, and best friend, ends up lost in Weinman Brothers, Nate's favorite store. Since no dogs are allowed in the store, Nate has to leave Sludge outside. Nate goes inside to buy a gift for Sludge and has to stand in a really long line. Worried about his doggy partner, Nate goes back to the entrance to check on Sludge and finds that Sludge is gone!

Marjorie Weinman Sharmat is the author of over twenty Nate the Great adventures, including NATE THE GREAT STALKS STUPIDWEED, NATE THE GREAT AND THE BORING BEACH BAG, NATE THE GREAT AND THE HALLOWEEN HUNT, and NATE THE GREAT AND THE MUSHY VALENTINE. She has written dozens of books for young readers. She named Nate the Great after her father. Her books have been named as Children's Choice books and Junior Literary Guild selections, and been picked as Books of the Year by the Library of Congress.

NATE THE GREAT AND THE BIG SNIFF is written as a chapter book, something the last few books in the series have changed to. The change is welcome because the chapters provide brief bits that can be read while on the go, and they all end up with cliffhanger endings that make the young reader want to pick the book up again or the young listener want to sit down and hear more. As always, the author presents a very real mystery with very real possible solutions before ultimately solving Nate's latest case. The usual cast of Annie and Fang and Rosamond show up in the story, and Claude puts in an appearance to round out the neighborhood. The way that all of the group bands together to help Nate find Sludge is really great and heart-warming. Over the years, Nate has been bothered by these people, or presented hard mysteries by them, and it's good to see that they help him out when he needs it, and that they actually care about Sludge. When the case is finally solved, Marjorie Weinman Sharmat and Mitchell Sharmat reveal that Sludge is every bit the detective that Nate is. The full color illustrations by Martha Weston are detailed and expressive. This is a truly great book for young readers and parents who love to read aloud to pre-readers.

Young readers will enjoy the whole Nate the Great series because the tales are told in a familiar fashion and involve a solid cast of characters that return book after book. These books are also some of the best to choose for read-alouds to pre-readers or for the last story before bedtime because they can be read in just a few moments. The Nate the Great mysteries are fun and addictive for both parent and child.

4-0 out of 5 stars New Author, Lots of Fun
The Bob-Whites are crushed when Mr. Stratton gives them the news. The school has been hit by a string of petty vandalism and robbery, so the board has decided that secret societies will have to disband. Fortunately, Trixie comes up with a plan to save their club. To prove they are worthy, they decide to put on an antique show to benefit UNICEF. Not only does this mean lots of hard work, but it means constant run-ins with thieves out to steal the valuable stuff for sale and display. Now Trixie must track down the culprits in time to save the sale.

This book is the first book that series creator Julie Campbell didn't write and it shows. There seems to be more of a conflict between Trixie and her family and friends about her detective work. Still, this book has some of the best "fun" scenes of the series. And it introduces the idea of the Bob-Whites doing charity events and their hangout Wimpy's, both staples in later books in the series.

When I was a kid, I totally bought the premise, but as an adult I realize just how out there it is. Still, it does set up a decent if not nail biting story. This qualifies more as an adventure rather then mystery, but it's still fun to read and I enjoy it.

While Julie Campbell's touch is missed, the series takes a decided leap into new territory with this fun adventure. Another one sure to make fans out of any kid. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best boks have ever read
The Boxcar Children and the Mystery of the Tree House was a very good book to read. When the Boxcar Children get new neighbors they help them build a tree house. The neighbors have insisted on getting a spy glass for the tree house. When they find the missing spy glass they look through it and find a mysterious room from the people that were there before them. Read this book when you get the chance to you'll love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars My Daughter Thinks this is Pretty Good
My daughter told me about this book and how she thinks it deserves "4 stars". She said that this book was about the Aldens (also known as the Boxcar Children) and how they get new neighbors. They make friends with the neighbors and start to build a treehouse. They discover something mysterious while looking out of the treehouse. She wants me to read the book to find out what happens. The book didn't deserve a five-star rating because she found it not to be as exciting as she hoped it would be. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Educational: Ron Roy Hits the Mark Again
My 9 year old daughter is willing to shut off the TV and ignore her gameboy when I give her one of the books in the A to Z mystery series. Each of these mysteries presents a story that captures the imagination of the 8-10 year old, and provides them with characters that are "cool" while modelling constructive behavior such as problem solving, cooperation, and respect for others. The three heroes of each story, Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose are kids your kid would like as friends. The author is skilled at presenting the mystery in a way that draws kids in. The clues are laid out in a logical way, as the story unfolds. My daughter has rarely guessed the solution before the end of the story, but she "got it" right along with Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Fun
A nice not-too-scary adventure with students heroes solving the puzzle, very impowering for young people. My daughter loves them and as a teacher I recommend this series for my students.
