3-0 out of 5 stars Cute, but not too comprehensive
I ordered this for my sons fifth birthday and while I found it cute, it is just okay for identifying caterpillars as it is not very comprehensive. Our childrens librarian recommended: Peterson First Guides: Caterpillars by Amt Bartlett Wright and that has been much more helpful for identifying many more species of caterpillars, butterflies and moths. We live in Northern Indiana and many of the caterpillars we have found have not been in this book but in the Peterson's book. My son loves it, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent learning tool.
I purchased 5 books of this series for my five year old daughter for Christmas, as she wanted a "field guide" like her older sisters when exploring our 45 acres of woods. After reviewing these books before giving them, we decided to use them as part of our science program for our home school. These books have bright and colorful pictures, short accurate explanations of the animal, their habitat, eating habits, and even some of the popular anecdotes that go along with the animal. (For example, the myth about the stripes on the wooly bear caterpillar in relation to the length of winter) It has the appropriate warning for studying certain animals. What we enjoy most is that many of these animals can be found in our back yard to furthur study. Each book deals with three types of animal, such as Caterpillars,Bugs, and Butterflies. They are separated into sections dealing with each type. At the end of the section is a wonderful hands-on project the child can basically do on their own within the recommended age group (9-12) or with some assistance for a younger age group like my daughter. My 5 year old begs us to read these books to her and loves the projects. I highly recommend this book and others in the series for those who want their children to learn about nature and how to respect it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
This book from the 1930s or 40s starts with a group of kids sailing in the Hebrides with Uncle Jim -- the uncle of two of them -- at the end of their cruise. They stop to spend a day taking care of the borrowed boat -- cleaning the bottom and putting on a new coat of bottom paint -- and while the older ones are doing this, the younger ones explore. One of them goes birdwatching, and sees something unusual.

Sounds pretty dull, right? Wrong. Like all the Ransome (non-fantasy) books, the bad-guy in this book -- an egg-collector -- is completely plausible AND horrible. The multiple story lines are all intriguing. The respect for decent behavior (cleaning the bottom of someone else's boat? Making sure to bury a bit of waxed paper from your sandwich...in 1935??? Respecting property ... not disturbing wildlife ... Passing behind a sailboat when you're in a faster motorboat...) isn't drilled in with a ham-handed holier-than-thou-ness; it's just part of what you get when you read the book. You also get a terrific adventure, a fingernail-biting crisis and denoument (remember when denoument was part of a good story?), humor, character, and a feeling of the Hebrides that you just don't forget.

If your kids don't like this book, keep the book and throw the kids in the trash. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars of cousins & Monarch Butterflies
Cousins Kinsey & Sarah share summer days creating fairy houses, boats & learning about the great migration of the Monarch Butterflies.

Illustrated in Monet-like drawings in various shades from cheery pastels to deep night dark, which carry over through each page, the adventures of the two cousins will enchant young readers everywhere.

Rebeccasreads highly recommends FAIRY FLIGHT as a fun book while being educational, with hidden messages & crafty ideas. It should be on every grandmother's gift list!

5-0 out of 5 stars Celebrate life through a child's eyes
A beautifully illustrated hardcover book for children "Fairy Flight" is a delight to read. Written for the under age 10 market it celebrates the imagination of children. In the book Kinsey and Sarah are cousins and friends who moved away from each other. During a visit to Sarah's house in California the children use their imagination to build fairy habitats. During this imaginative play they notice some monarch butterfly caterpillars. Sarah shares her knowledge of these butterflies with Kinsey who takes a few caterpillars back home along with some milkweed to keep them fed. Eventually they become butterflies and join all the other monarchs in their flight to California for the winter. Throughout the book there is a thread of childhood magic and their belief in fairies. "Fairy Flight" is a recommended read for young children who are sure to relate to the fantasy and enjoy the detail of the vivid illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A simply joyous fantasy picture book
Deftly written and superbly illustrated by Tracy Kane, Fairy Flight is a simply joyous fantasy picture book for young readers ages 4 to 9 about Sarah and Kinsey, two cousins who delight in summer days pondering the miraculous ability of monarch butterflies to migrate, while raising these majestic insects from caterpillars to Monarch butterflies. A thoroughly cheery tale, Fairy Flight is imbued with a genuine awe at the wondrous, fairy-like complexities within these tiny, intrinsically beautiful insects. ... Read more

Book Description

Focus on the Family Great Stories are riveting novels from the past for today's readers. Each book features the complete text and, in convenient footnotes, present-day definitions for older words. They also include in-depth introductions that shed light on the authors and the times in which they lived and discussion questions. Into a majestic forest wanders an orphaned young man known only as "Freckles." Arriving at the logging camp of Mr. McLean, he persuades the man to give him a job guarding the prized lumber, though Freckles has only one hand. Despite harsh conditions, Freckles soon falls in love with the forest, as well as a beautiful young girl. But he wonders if she could ever love someone like him--crippled, with no family or identity. A surprising turn of events leads Freckles to discover his courage, as well as answers to his mysterious past. Freckles, part of the Focus on the Family Great Stories collection, remains an unforgettable story of love, courage, and adventure.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST book in the world!
This is the best book I have ever read! I am 13 years old, and have read the book twice. Gene Stratton Porter is a great writer, and has wonderful concepts. Freckles is a great roll model for boys and girls alike, and is so humble! He will not let the "Swamp Angel" marry him, because he has only one hand, is an orphan, and has no knowledge of "honerable birth" which he thinks is very important. I think anyone who has read this book will agree with me, that this is a wonderful book. If you liked this book, you will also like "A Girl of the Limberlost" the sequel to "Freckles". From 1 to 10, I give this book an 11!

5-0 out of 5 stars Riveting book; determinism
I would like to say that I really love Gene Stratton Porter's books. I have read Freckles (the first one I read at age 11), followed by A Girl of the Limberlost, Her Father's Daughter, and The Harvester. Each one was beautifully written, with great detail, beautiful nature, and incredible feeling. I couldn't put any of them down until I finished them. I am excited to try and read some of her other books, the titles of which I discovered here on Amazon.

I need to respond to a few comments made by one customer, who seemed very frustrated by some elements in the book Freckles. She did have some major concerns, but understanding the background of the author and the times she wrote in helps. This customer emphasized the fact that Freckles never believed himself to be a good, noble human being, and that the rich characters looked down on others, and that humble folk always respected the rich people. Those things were the attitudes and behavior of people in the times in which the book was written. That was the way it was quite often, unfortunately. In regards to Freckles always believing bad about himself, he did so because he had no way of knowing who he really was, so he assumed the worst--many people do that. This attitude is called "determinism," which is basically the belief that people cannot rise above their background, heritage, circumstances, or physical conditions--that they are helpless to change their circumstances and lot in life. Determinism was a major concern in the works of many authors of Gene Stratton Porter's time period, especially in Latin-American and generally North American literature of the last few years of 1800's and the early 1900's. These authors were seeking to challenge the set social classes and attitudes, and seeking to forge new identities. I think that this book portrays these attitudes very well.

The test of good literature is whether or not it makes you think about the issues, and what you feel while enjoying all the elements of the text. You don't have to agree with everything you read. I do appreciate reading what others think about the products, and it makes me think as well. I think Gene Stratton Porter does an excellent job in helping us read and think for ourselves. I recommend her books to everyone! Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars First 'real' book I ever read...
I'm 46....but, I read Freckles in the 5th grade, I think! I was 10 then, and found his world fascinating... so much so, that I 'saved' the book for my children to read. I haven't re-read it in all of 36 years, but will never forget it. A bonafide treasure...

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!
This book is so sweet! The story is classic and very charming. The main character, "Freckles" has an indomitable spirit. I found this story inspiring in that a person could go through so many trials in such a short life and still have such a trust for the rest of the human race. The book has a rather simple story with a few good twists that keep the reader intrigued. My only caution about this book is that it is written in the way a young immigrant would speak. This sometimes makes the reading a little slower, but if you are willing to try it is well worth the effort. I would definitly recommend this book to any young person. "Freckles" is a fresh change to the violence and bloodshed that is so popular today. I first read this book in grade school and I think I enjoyed it as much now as I did then.

5-0 out of 5 stars 40 years later, I STILL love this book!
I first read "Freckles" when I was 12 (it was my Mom's favorite when she was a child, and my Dad bought me a copy for my 12th birthday). To this day, I re-read it whenever I feel stressed and need a lift. It's a wonderful evocation of a simpler, more wholesome time. Freckles is a character that is both strong and vulnerable, and you just can't help but love him. Although some of the language is archaic now, the book is full of "nuggets" of pure enchantment (the "Mother Duncan, do kisses wash off?" speech comes to mind). This book is a treasure-- don't miss it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As deep as the ocean itself
In a time of mushrooming materialism and tearing technomania, this delightful book for all ages pays homage to life's precious treasures that can be so easily taken for granted if we are not careful to notice them. Debra Frasier's enchanting collages combine cutouts, photographs, and words to eloquently remind us of the simple pleasures that are right under our noses if we remain open and take a moment to appreciate them.

"On Saturday morning, the rain came down. It made the chickens squawk."But that's only the beginning. Before the sun comes out again, an entireneighborhood is in a crabby uproar. The owner of the beauty parlor squabbleswith the barber, who argues with the painter, who has just accidentally bonkedthe barber in the head with his paint can. Then the baker unintentionally pokesthe pizza man in the nose with his umbrella, and they start quarreling.Soon, "the whole block was honking, yelling, bickering, and barking." There's noend in sight... until the rain stops, the sun comes out, the air smells freshand sweet, and a rainbow appears. Before they know it, the bickerers are helpingeach other clean up the mess caused by the ruckus, and everyone's smilingagain.

David Shannon, Caldecott Honor artist of No, David!, brings his ownbrand of sunshine to readers. 5-0 out of 5 stars When it rains, it pours!
To start a book review by raving about the beautiful art is unusual, but the illustrations in this book are fantastic. My kids were captivated by the pictures and wanted to know who would be affected by the rain next. The kids are 3 and 2 and I was amazed that even the 2 year old waited for the page to be turned and never left my lap. I was very impressed by the book and thankfully, so were the kids!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
The Rain Came Down...which made the chickens squawk, then the cat yowled and the dog barked. A man yelled at the dog and woke his sleeping baby. His wife heard the baby crying and shouted to her husband to "stop all that yelling". A policeman hearing the yelling, stops his car in the middle of the street to investigate which causes a cab driver to start honking, which makes the ice-cream man turn up the music in his truck. A painter accidently hits a barber with a falling paint can, a baker pokes the pizza man with his umbrella, a boy chasing his toy boat down a streaming gutter, splashes a little girl and there's arguing, crying, honking and yelling up and down the street.....Until the rain suddenly stops and so does the noise. The sun comes out, the air smells fresh and clean and a rainbow appears. Slowly, everyone calms down and helps each other straighten out the mess and get back to what they were doing before the shower. David Shannon's book about the chaos that occurs because of an unexpected rain storm is a wonderful chain of events story that will delight and amuse youngsters of all ages. His vibrant and very expressive illustrations become busier and more detailed with each addition to the unfortunate happenings this storm causes, until they almost spill off the page. This is a terrific picture book that will have your youngsters entranced and giggling every time it's read!

4-0 out of 5 stars Shannon' art a delight
The energy and excitement in Shannon's art brings a simple thunderstorm day to life. A very different book than his No, David! Series with one exception-the wit of the illustrations and the rendering of true emotions of anger, surprise, elation and affection. The words are straightforward, the colors bright, primary and active. As usual, Shannon's rendering of eyes and mouths, our two most expressive features, delight and amaze. Highly recommended for reading to small groups who can gather around and participate in the color, art and emotions of the characters. (Preschool, certainly, but for older readers to capture emotion in art).

2-0 out of 5 stars The Rain Comes Down But That's Just About All
The pictures are glorious; however, the story is extremely disappointing. There is no real conflict and thus no conflict resolution - which is so important to the little ones. The rain does, indeed, come down, but that's just about all that happens. Unfortunately, this latest book by Mr. Shannon does not measure up to his wonderfully delightful David series or his great cautionary tale, A Bad Case of Stripes - all of which bring a great big smile to my heart just thinking about them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a beautiful and thoughtful book.
The illustrations in this book are magnificent.
Each page appears as an illuminated manuscript. The characters (the King and Princess) have 'off-white' complexions--which make them very appealing for some under-represented students.
The story is well written, though a bit predictable and is very meaningful in its strong environmental message.
We used it in school as a model for writing and illustrating stories with a message.

2-0 out of 5 stars My 7 year old was bored
Although the illustrations are lovely and we both love unicorns, the story was just not good. It was also too descriptive in places for the age range listed. The story is about mankind destroying the forests and a lot of dialogue between the unicorn and the little girl. It was really just plain boring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting story, beautiful illustrations
At our library, I gather books for teachers to pick up and check out for use with their lesson plan subjects. I always pull Lynne Cherry's Kapok Tree for teachers who are teaching about rainforests. When I saw "The Dragon and the Unicorn," I knew I had to order it for the teachers and kids. I wasn't disappointed and don't think our library's patrons will be disappointed, either! The illustrations are not only rich and colorful, they're creative in their design and range. The plot moved at a good pace - not sluggish, nor too much detail, nor too much preachy "do this," "don't do that." Kids will like the gentle, but fiercely protective dragon and the wise, magical unicorn who he protects. Kids will also enjoy taking the journey with Arianna into the world in which the dragon, unicorn, and many other animals live, and where they are being threatened by Arianna's father's destruction of the forests. The resolution of the problem of the king's allowing the forest's destruction is satisfying without being too pat or easy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Kids and People who like our World
This book was so beautiful. I love unicorns and dragons, so it was great seeing the two together. i liked this book because of the story it depicted, and that is that we can all be at peace with the world, and those around us. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Dragon And The Unicorn
I was so delighted to find this wonderful enviromental fairy tale with beautiful illustrations of brown people. It is such a relief and joy to encounter an author and illustrator whom recognizes that there are other marvelous colours that can be used when filling in the hues of the characters. The beautiful Arianna lead our family on a mystical journey through a medievel forest in danger, and we learned that the darkness of the forest was full of peace, silence and beauty. Thank you Lynne for letting young readers know that what is dark and brown and black is also beautiful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun book
Geography is a fun subject because it is so visual. This book has fun, brightly colored pictures that illustrate basic geography words. I found this little gem at a library sale years ago and have used it to help prepare my chldren for our homeschool association geography bees. They love this book too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids! Adults love it too!
This book is really well done. Though it is targeted for children, this 40-plus year old found it very informative. After searching through the adult catalog at the local library for a book that would explain landforms and earth features and finding nothing, I found this book in the young people's collection. It was a Godsend. I found it so useful, that I am now purchasing it for my personal library.

If you, like me, have never been clear in your own mind about the difference between a hill and a mountain; a mesa and a butte; a brook, creek, or stream; a river, lake or pond; a sea and an ocean; a canyon and a gorge, and on and on, then this book will painlessly de-mystify these terms for you and many more.

Thanks to the authors and publishers of this fine book, I am less dumbfounded by my physical surroundings, and at least know now what I probably should have learned in grade school

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have book!
I'd like to thank Jack Knowlton and Harriett Barton for writing and illustrating "Geography from A to Z."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Fun!
I bought this book for my 4-year old son and he loves it! My husband and I love reading it to him and his baby sister who often also listens along. The book is educational yet great fun to read with its rhyming and fun verses. It teaches without being heavy-handed and even taught us, the parents, a thing or two we didn't know about the insect world! We all enjoy this book tremendously and love the other Cat in the Hat Learning series books as well.

I got this book for a 4 yr old daughter of a friend and she's now intrigued by the insect world. Personally I love how the bumble bee illustration has taught her about how bees communicate through the bumble bee "dance." On the whole, it's nicely educational on an introductory level -- general facts/concepts are taught through illustrations and rhyme. Great for the young ones. Another favorite of mine is the Dr. Seuss Great Big Flap Book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate, fun pictures.
This is a book which is accurate in its drawings, with the official names for many, if not all, the different species. I am an adult, a frustrated artist with no talent whatsoever for drawing. I have really enjoyed coloring these pictures with colored pencils. There is a lot of small detail work in some of the pictures, which I think would be difficult with crayons, but of course, all the detail doesn't need to be observed. I have loved this book and have colored 2/3 of the pictures. It is my favorite of the half dozen coloring books I bought. There are completed colored pictures of about a quarter of the drawings, which I appreciate very much, as it gives inspiration to those of us who would like to experiment with shading, etc. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Bear Grows Up
As the third of this illustrator's riffs on themes from Thoreau (this time, a take on HDT's famous night in jail), "Henry Climbs a Mountain" is not immediately as satisfying as the first two ("Henry Hikes to Fitchburg" and "Henry Builds a Cabin"). The illustrations have lost some of the joy that distinguishes the first two books. The colors seem more subdued and the scenes less captivating. (One picture in particular, where Henry begins to imagine his way into the jail-cell wall, is positively awkward.)

That said, "Henry Climbs" is the most resonant of the three. For a book of some thirty-two pages, there's a lot going on here: a "Harold and the Purple Crayon"-like meditation on art and creativity; a parable on freedom and slavery; even a comment (I think) on compassion and interconnectedness. It's no wonder this book isn't as fun as the first two! But it's still far from somber. Johnson's insertion of small creatures throughout, especially Henry's fellow cellmate (a mouse), brightens the mood considerably, and the whole book ends on a two-page spread that's appropriately vernal in its color and hope.

The Henry who stopped for blueberries on the way to Fitchburg and still arrived in time for a moonlight sit with his friend has changed. (I'd say he's not just for kids anymore, but then, he never really was.) It's good, though, to see this bear growing up just a little. One misses the ecstatic illustrations of "Fitchburg" and "Cabin," but I think "Climbs" will stick with the reader longer. This is one of the most intelligent picture books of the year--a worthy successor to Johnson's first two books and, like the others, a wonderful way to re-energize even a jaded adult's fondness for Thoreau.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful look at social justice
Have you ever wondered how to bring up the issue of social injustice to your children so that they will understand how important it is to strive for justice in this world? Heh, that's a bit far fetched, but this book is a beautiful introduction to standing up for what you think is right. Henry is going to climb a mountain, but he is put in jail when he refuses to pay taxes because his taxes would support slavery. In jail, Henry goes into a dream world in which he is climbing a mountain. When he gets to the top, he meets another bear that has no shoes. He asks the bear where he is going, and he gives the bear his shoes when he hears that he is walking to the north star. Henry goes back down the mountain and suffers pain from the sharp rocks and pebbles on the way down. When he is at the bottom, he says, "I feel like I'm at the top of the mountain!"

It introduces children to being kind to others and giving up our own comfort in order to ease the pain of another. It is a beautiful story with beautiful illustrations.

While reading this book, you can bring up Martin Luther King, Jr. because he was jailed in Birmingham when he was fined for his "illegal" protest, which was perfectly legal and peaceful. Talk about how people can help those in need. Talk of how kindness is more beneficial than selfishness.

I recommend this book for children five years of age or older. Adults can learn something from it, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful art and story may even open up conversations
Nearly every page of this story contains a passage to a thoughtful conversation with your child. The story is based on an incident from the life of Henry David Thoreau. Henry the bear is missing a shoe, and is on his way to the cobbler when he is stopped by the taxman and must spend a night in jail because he didn't pay. In the jail cell, Henry starts to draw on the walls and gets lost on his creative landscape, hiking up a mountain he created and meeting a friend. It is a beautiful, simple story that will provoke thoughtful questions. There is, for instance, an act of civil disobedience and its consequence. The breadth and power of imagination is also an important theme. A turning point in the story follows an act of generosity. Again, it is an entertaining story that may give you and a young reader lots to talk about together and for that it is highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Slavery or the Mexican War
Henry Climbs A Mountain is a lovely book with the ideas Thoreau may have had in jail coming to life in Henry's fitful night in jail. However, the author gives a brief background on Thoreau at the end of the book which states that Henry David Thoreau went to jail for not paying taxes to a government that supported slavery when, according to his biographical information, he didn't pay taxes because he chose not to support the Mexican War. The lack of accuracy is a problem as I am not sure anyone unfamiliar with Thoreau would check this information. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Poetic and Photographic Feast
Yolen and Stemple have created a visual feast in their, "Color Me A Rhyme." As usual, Jane Yolen's poetry is excellent, but what sold me on the book were the amazing photographic layouts of natural images in green, grey, orange, purple....Each two page spread in the book has a Jane Yolen poem about the featured color, other names for the color (for white: chalk, snow, alabaster and bone), a literary quote about the color, and at least two lovely juxtaposed photos. You have to see the book to really appreciate its gorgeous layouts. This book would be excellent in the early grades, where teaching concepts is emphasized, or when teaching creative writing. Kids could all write their own color poems. I also think young artists would enjoy the varieties of color represented in the volume. How many kids know the varieties of blue? Some of its names are lovely and mysterious--cerulean, sapphire, azure and turquoise. Let them experience these colors in this fine book. ... Read more
