Book Description

On his thrilling carriage ride, Max goes down a hill, over a bump, up in the air, and back into his carriage that stops in a huge pile of leaves!Rosemary Wells's original four Max Board Books, published in 1979 by Dial and followed by an additional four in 1985, were the first high-quality board books in the U.S. and became immediate classics. Total sales of the eight books were over 1.2 million! But more important, they have been loved by millions of children. For the next generation Rosemary Wells has now completely re-illustrated all eight delightful Max books in her bold, new full-color style. These wonderful stories with real characters are funnier than ever. They are terrific first books, especially with the increased focus on the importance of reading to babies and toddlers, a cause that Mrs. Wells has been wholeheartedly promoting for several years with her The Most Important 20 Minutes of Your Day reading program and now the Prescription for Reading Initiative. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Delightful tale, but awkward to read aloud.
Join Max and Ruby on a ride through UP, DOWN, and in BETWEEN. Max, the playful little bunny and his big sister Ruby are at it again in this charming little board book titled "MAX's Ride." Older sister Ruby stands on top of a hill holding the handle of a baby carriage (or shall I say "bunny" carriage) while little brother Max is seated inside primed for the ride of his life. "GO! said Max. DOWN went Max. STOP said Ruby." Max flies OVER a bump, OUT of the carriage, and UP into the air. Ruby runs UNDER a clothesline in an attempt to catch him. Max sails BETWEEN two trees, slides back INTO the carriage, and crashes into a pile of newly fallen leaves, "STOP said Max." This is a delightful little tale about two mischievous bunnies, that teaches verbs and prepositions.

The text is very short, it is only ten pages long, and Ruby's expression when she prepares to let go of the carriage is priceless. "MAX's Ride," is a board book that measures 7" x 7" x ΒΌ". The illustrations are bright, colorful and expressive, however, the wording is a little awkward to read aloud, but not as difficult as some of the author's other books. Birth and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Max shares his ride with my family
My fourteen month old daughter loves this book. She carries it around with her wanting it to be read to her all of the time. When you open the first page she shouts GO! (the first word on the first page). The pages have only a few words on them keeping my daughter's attention. The words are very descriptive and make this book very easy to animate. You can take your child along with Max on his ride as you go up, down, over and between-- all the while she is bouncing on your knee.

5-0 out of 5 stars GO! said Max.
I love this book. My five-month-old daughter seems to love it too, and wants me to read it to her over and over. Maybe it's because I get such enjoyment out of it and it's contagious. The final spread, with Max's dopey, happy expression is gorgeous, and I can imagine him saying STOP with a satisfied, exhilirated sigh.

5-0 out of 5 stars Max's Ride
Rosemary Wells' "Max" books are wonderful and we especially love them for our first grandson, born February 16, 2000 because his name is MAX! Our Max's mom has four of the Max series and we have just ordered four more. The board books are easy for a young baby to see and for the mother to handle while also handling the baby! The colors are bright and Max is an endearing character. Great books to start a baby on the road to reading! ... Read more

Book Description

A warm, reassuring picture book that captures the joy of the arrival of a new baby. "Will Mommy and Daddy remember me," Jamie asked Aunt Isabel, "waiting here, all night long?" Young Jamie has the difficult, but important job, of waiting at home while his sister is being born at the hospital. While he waits he snuggles close to his Aunt Isabel as she joyfully recounts to Jamie what she did while she was waiting for Jamie to be born. Aunt Isabel had to drive a long distance to see Jamie, through the fog, along a narrow peninsula, through fishing villages, stopping often to call the hospital for news. Finally, Jamie's mom got on the phone and said, "He's here and we're just getting to know each other." In her excitement, Aunt Isabel sings, "Welcome to this day, your very first one." The long-awaited phone call from the hospital interrupts her story. Now it is time for Jamie and Aunt Isabel to celebrate and sing, "Welcome to this day, your very first one." The story sensitively addresses the older sibling's feelings on the night that a baby is being born, and the gentle, lyrical tone of the story is colorfully rendered in Sophy Williams subtle, soft pastels. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Appealing illustrations and simple game instructions
"Charming, eye-catching illustrations combine with
practical information in this children's book about playing checkers. It's aimed at very young children and the bright colorful drawings are sure to catch their attention. The simple
story is an interesting way to introduce children to the game of checkers, and the sibling interaction adds to the fun. A good way to introduce a young child to the always popular game of checkers."

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Checkers book for kids
This is a great book on checkers. The illustrator did an amazing job making it look like a child's style of artwork. Of course, it's a cute story about the characters, but I appreciate the clear directions on how to play checkers. The rules are there and some subtle dialogue addressing what questions might arise should someone be learning checkers for the first time.
When is the sequel on Chess?

5-0 out of 5 stars Checkers and a lot of fun!
A very funny story, which teaches kids (and their parents and grand-parents) to play checkers! Great illustrations and a lot of humor! It is a pleasure to read it with the kids and continue practicing checkers together using rules listed in the book. ... Read more

Twelve-year-old May Amelia is too busy chasing sheep, fishing forsalmon, and keeping pace with the antics of her seven Finnish brothers to bother wearing a dress or scrubbing behind her ears. Unfortunately, she's being pressured to clean up her act. "It seems like everyone is conspiring to make me a Proper Young Lady," she observes in frustration. "I do not think being a proper Young Lady sounds like any fun at all."

The old-fashioned language in this historical novel seems strained at times, and the quirky use of capital letters is an unnecessary distraction, but this book is still a lot of fun. Why? For one thing, the story is set in the far, untamed reaches of the West at the turn of the 20th century, and offers encounters with Chinook Indians, dark forests, and the twists and turns of the Nasel River. And then there is May Amelia--as headstrong as rushing water, and the only female born on this stretch of the river since her family can remember. She is known (when she's not deep into trouble) as the Miracle. Will this feisty female ever settle down and become the little lady everyone expects her to be? Will her pregnant mother give birth to another girl so May Amelia can finally have a sister? You'll have to read the whole story to find out. (Ages 10 and older) --Maria Dolan ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book
I really liked this book because there was a lot to it. It wasn't just a book that seems like it repeats everything page after page. A lot of it was sad, but it sort of worked out in the end.

May Amelia works on the farm and hates it there, but later in the story she finds out that she doesn't want to be anywhere but at the farm. I really liked the character, Wilbert, her brother, because he was always looking out for her and he was almost always at her side. I thought it was neat that it was based on Jennifer L Holm's grandmother's diary. Overall, I think it was a really great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars SERGIO.R.S. ...... I LOVED this book!!I am a third grader.
I think Our Only May Amelia is one of the best books in the whole world!!!
I loved this book from the beginning to the end. This book was full of adventure. It's not a page turner but I often find myself thinking about the story line. This book took me back to that period of time.I even found myself talking like they did throughout the whole book. I often read this book out loud to my mom and I found her to be very interested in this book, she even cried towards the end of the book.I would recommend my friends to read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great 6th Grade Lit Group choice
I read this book as a preview for my 6th grade literature groups. What a sweet story. My students (girls) are enjoying it. It isn't really a page turner but it has it's own draw and provides geographical and multicultural insight to the Finnish immigrant experience to rural western Washington State in the 1890's. Nice language and vocab exposure with Finnish thrown into the mix as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars I HATE THIS BOOK!!!!
i hated this book! i mean hoo cares about some stupid girl who hunts and fishes! i dont!!! well while i was reading this book i was like falling asleep!

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't recommend it
This is a very interesting story based in part on a diary found by the author's grandaunt, Alice Amelia Holm. It's about a 12 year old Finnish girl who lives in Washington on the Nasel River. She has seven brothers (even though one is actually a cousin). There is a good map in the beginning of the book.

This book is immediately interesting. The odd style of capitalization and punctuation (or lack of it) makes you feel
like someone is really talking to you.And the way things are
often described in the present tense makes you feel like you are there. The family is deeply connected, even aunts and uncles who don't live there. And the grandmother - even though
she was so terrible, it's the family connection that makes them
let her live there.

I can't recommend it because there is an incredible amount of death, even murders, and it's too much to bear. Also, so much talk of spirits and ghosts and curses, etc. Finally, one thing
happened that was just so unbearable it nearly ruins the whole
book, charming as it is.

There is one girl in our family and I thought this book would really help her and her brothers because this family really loved each other and they understood how special each one was.
She said to her one brother whom she didn't want to leave "you're the only Matti I've got" and he said "just remember, you're the only May we've got".I read the book to
the kids by crossing out most of the deaths and all of the
ghosts and swearing. After that, it was a really good book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Whole Truth About Babies.....
"Before my little sister was born, my mom tried to teach me about babies. I listened carefully, but it's not as easy as you might think. Even my mom gets mixed up sometimes..." Mom thinks babies are as sweet as cookies, cuddly as puppies, hungry as bears and smell like whipped cream. But as our big sister narrator tells us, don't count on it. You can't dip them in milk like cookies. They drool a lot more than puppies. They're not always so hungry, especially when you try to feed them mooshed peas, and as for the wonderful aroma, just wait until you smell a dirty diaper. But they're awfully fun to play with, and as the little girl and her baby get to know each other, she finds Mom is right...babies are warm and soft, like sunshine on a rainy day and definitely a gift from the angels..... Mary Hanson's simple, endearing text is complemented by Debbie Tilley's sweet and expressive illustrations. Together word and art paint a captivating and engaging portrait of how wonderful a new addition to the family can be. Perfect for preschoolers, The Difference Between Babies & Cookies is a gentle and humorous story of growing love that is sure to touch your heart. As our big sister tells us at the end... "I'm just glad I'm here to help take care of our baby. She shouldn't grow up thinking she's a cookie."

It's also as warm as a new baby cuddled in your arms, hilarious as a stand-up comedian, and as true as the changes a new addition brings to every family. This book would be a delicious choice for any child (and her/his parents!) about to become a sibling. (It will make only children laugh, too!) Highly recommended. This book has humor AND heart.

If you're looking for an insipid, mushy story about siblings, THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BABIES & COOKIES is not for you. On the other hand, if you'd like a good giggle and a fun book to share with your child, this witty book is perfect. In this delightful book, Hanson breaks through the 'sweet and cute' mold, and yet the end result is both, after all. The illustrations by Debbie Tilley are fresh and endearing ' pretty darn cute! And the book's ending will touch your heart...pretty darn sweet. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BABIES AND COOKIES is a perfect gift for an older sibling and is guaranteed to be read again and again. It's as sweet as cookies! ... Read more
