Book Description

Everyone knows babies can't talk, but if they could, they'd have a lot to thank their older siblings for -- whether it's giving them extra licks of an ice cream cone, teaching them songs to sing, or not letting them put sand in their mouths. This big thank-you of a book is sure to add an extra layer of appreciation to any sibling relationship. Julie Markes's sweet text and Laura Rader's humorous illustrations will delight the entire family.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son loves it...
My 33 month old son is not very interested in books but for some reason this title caught my eye and I tried it with him. He loves this book. He loves the illustrations and I think it captures his heart because of the relationship between the brother and sister. We have a daughter a year old and I think he relates to the pictures of the two mice playing together. He asks me to read it at least twice at a time when we pull it out. I definitely recommend this for new big brothers or sisters. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, Touching, and Real!
This beautifully illustrated book will bring a tear to a (grand)mother's eye although with smiles and warmth. The author speaks through the eyes of a baby admiring a brother 5/6 years older. Perfect for young readers. This book should be nominated for an award... simply wonderful!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Meet a Modern Day Hero.....
"This is my big brother. Everyone makes a fuss over how big I am, but my brother is REALLY big..." So begins the unseen narrator, as she discusses the merits of her wonderful big brother. As far as she's concerned he's amazing, talented, and can do just about any and every thing. She knows all this because she watches him all day long. He's her superhero... "I love my big brother, and he loves me." Valorie Fisher's debut children's book is filled with sibling love, wonder, and whimsy as it looks at life through the eyes of a baby. Her simple, spare text sets the stage, but it's the stunning and evocative, bold and playful photographs that really steal the show, and bring this special relationship to life. Perfect for preschoolers, My Big Brother is a joyous, fun-filled celebration of siblings that shows that life just gets better for everyone in the family with each new addition.

5-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable easy-reader picture book
Valorie Fisher's My Big Brother is an enjoyable easy-reader picture book, illustrated with vivid photographs and celebrating the relationship between toddler and bigger brother. A charming book for beginning readers that is colorful, fun, and touched with love, My Big Brother is an enthusiastically recommended addition to family, school, and community library picturebook collections for beginning readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT A FIND
A sublime new classic that speaks to a childhood anxiety with the same wise artistry as Goodnight Moon or Where the Wild Things Are. Fisher's through-the-eyes-of-a-child photos and text elegantly walk the line between truth-telling and whimsy, wonder and honesty. Best of all she strangles those other idiot-books--the ones that insist the big kids will all loathe their little bro or sis and want to send him or her back. Hello. When the little he or she worships the very ground you walk on... Are you kidding? Would you or I willingly surrender super-hero status?! Fuggetaboudit. No WAY! A must to give to families that are jittery over a sibling on the way. Hey, I'm stocking up. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars O.K.
This book had some very good illustrations, but I still think that I've read better Tomie dePaola books. This book is about a little boy named Tommy who is expecting a new brother or sister. Tommy wishes and prays for a new baby sister with a {red ribbon in her hair}. But when Tommy's Nana Fall-River comes to visit, she's not too fond of children knowing how babies are born, and doesn't seem too interested in what's going on at all. All Tommy wants to do is go to the hospital to see his baby sister, but things keep coming up, and he just can't. He begins missing his mom and starts not to listen to what his Nana asks him to do. To find out what happens in the end, you'll have to read the book!

I would recommend this book to people because in it, Tommy learns that even though someone may not be so nice and kind to you, being nice and kind to them in return doesn't hurt anything. Rebelling against the things that people want you to do {especially your parents, won't get you anywhere} That's something that children these days should learn. So even though I didn't think that this was one of his best books, it still has a good message to children

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my son's favorites!
My two-year-old absolutely loves this book. Unlike most of the other good books for expectant siblings, this book doesn't discuss any abivalent feelings concerning a new baby. While this could be a detriment in another book, here it seems beautifully appropriate. The autobiographical main character, Tommy, wants a baby sister more than anything else, and the happy ending comes when he gets his wish and meets his little sister. This is a beautifully simple and charming story with lovely, gentle pictures. I know that this book helped us to announce our pregnancy to my son. Even though he has other books on this topic, 'The Baby Sister' is his favorite, with 'Julius, the Baby of the World' taking a close second. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Board Book that is definitely not Boring!
Rosemary Wells has done it again! Max's New Suit playfully explores a simple concept that is familiar to toddlers and their grown ups. Combining a simple text with her extremely expressive illustrations, Ms Wells tells the story of brother and sister team, Max and Ruby. In this amusing tale, Max must get dressed in his new suit (which he hates!) to attend Ruby's tea party. Despite Ruby's help, the precocious Max wants to do it himself and this is where the story takes a delightful twist. My 6-month old Max loves the Max books and recognizes the Max and Ruby characters. The illustrations and text are clear and colorful while complimenting each other. This book holds his attention during our frequent readings and, I believe, helps to foster his sense of humor and fun. Max's New Suit will keep both child and reader entertained for reading after reading! It is an essential book for every baby's library (or, as Ms Wells might say, every Bunny's library). ... Nine-year-old Beezus Quimby has her hands full with her little sister, Ramona. Sure, other people have little sisters that bother them sometimes, but is there anyone in the world like Ramona? Whether she's taking one bite out of every apple in a box or secretly inviting 15 other 4-year-olds to the house for a party, Ramona is always making trouble--and getting all the attention. Every big sister can relate to the trials and tribulations Beezus must endure. Old enough to be expected to take responsibility for her little sister, yet young enough to be mortified by every embarrassing plight the precocious preschooler gets them into, Beezus is constantly struggling with her mixed-up feelings about the exasperating Ramona.

There's no one in the world like Beverly Cleary, either. This terrifically popular author of over two dozen children's books has withstood the test of time for generations, as her many awards, including the Newbery Medal, attest. Two books in the Ramona series, Ramona and Her Father and Ramona Quimby, Age 8, were also named Newbery Honor Books. Louis Darling's wonderful ink illustrations are the kind that will stay with a reader for a lifetime. (Ages 8 to 12) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A funny sister story with a message
I have two younger sisters and I know the kind of trouble they can cause and how exasperating they can be. When I first read this book, I was in third grade. I'm 22 now, and I have read the book at least 20 times since then. Beverly Cleary's book tend to contain such true-to-life values that they remain timeless.
Beezus is the older sister, the responsible and smart one. Ramona is the precocious little sister, creative but messy, cute but needy. Beezus struggles with being nice and trying to entertain Ramona and trying to be firm with her at the same time. There are some great little stories in this book about Ramona's misadventures including her unwavering love for a certain picture book, her locking Henry Huggins' dog in the bathroom, and her deciding that she wants to throw a party for herself without asking her mother. Things finally come to a head at Beezus' birthday party. When attention-starved Ramona gets a little too obnoxious, she shamefully admits that she just doesn't love her little sister all the time.
Herein lies the lesson: Beezus' mother explains that Beezus is not expected to love Ramona all the time, that Ramona will do things that get on her nerves sometimes. But there will also be good times when the two will get along, work together, or share a laugh. And those are the moments that count in the sisterly bond. I have stuck to this mantra when trying to deal with my own two younger sisters so I don't go completely insane.
This is a great book for little girls who have sisters so that one may understand the other's point of view. It helps you take a great look at your own sibling relationships, or it will at least show you that your own younger sister is not NEARLY as bratty as Ramona. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny and wise.
I read my daughter Beverly Cleary's Ramona the Pest last year, when she was in kindergarten (because in that book Ramona is also a kindergartner) and she instantly pronounced it her favorite chapter book of all time.

We've since been reading all the Ramona books, but we skipped this one for awhile. It's the first in the series, and takes place when Ramona is four years old. I knew from reviews that if focused more on Ramona's older, more serious sister, Beezus, and wasn't a "real" Ramona Quimby book. I somehow thought it would not be as funny as the others.

I was wrong. Ramona is even more exuberant in this book than in any of the others we've read, and her antics are hilarious. Seeing everything through the eyes of her serious sister does not make it one bit less funny.

But this is not just a funny book. It deals gently and honestly with the difficulty Beezus has in loving her sometimes exasperating little sister. Beezus and Ramona is more than forty years old, but I donÕt think anyone has ever come close to Beverly Cleary's ability to capture and sympathize with children's feelings. Cleary brings everything around to a happy, but entirely believable ending in this warm, wise book.

My daughter says this is her second favorite Ramona book (after Ramona the Pest), but so far it's my very favorite.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wow, What a litter sister!
The book, Beezus and Ramona is great. Read it now. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate it an 8 because big kids, like Beezus, should know that little kids can pests. Little kids, like Ramona, can do naughty things. Little kids should learn from their mistakes. It may take a few times, but one day they will learn.
Ramona is one crazy girl. She does pretty silly and extreme things. She is always causing trouble. My favorite character is Beezus because she is more civilized than Ramona. Beezus doesn't do things that could get her into trouble. Although Beezus is my favorite character, my favorite part is when Ramona breaks the eggs. I thought that was pretty funny. My other favorite part is when Beezus reads 202 Things to Do On a Rainy Afternoon.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has a younger brother or sister.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Childhood Treasure About Sisterly Love
This was one of my very first chapter books, given to me in the first grade, and it left such a lasting impression on me. I literally read it to pieces throughout my elementary school years, and even had two little dolls that I re-named Beezus and Ramona, who I used to act out many of the stories.

Each hilarious chapter about another mess Ramona causes for her big sister Beezus (my favorite was Ramona's first trip to the library, and her disastrous attempt to claim a beloved book for her very own) can stand on it's own. But connecting the different segments is a more complex running plotline about Beezus' horrible secret - sometimes she gets so mad at her little sister that she doesn't love her at all! Oh, the horror! :-)

After suffering through one embarrassing misadventure after another at the hands of her infuriating sister, Beezus finally confesses to her mother and her favorite aunt about the "wicked" thoughts she's had about Ramona. Expecting them to be shocked, she is stunned when both burst out laughing and begin reminiscing about their own childhood, when they had some not so loving moments themselves. Yes, even Mother and Aunt Beatrice, who are now the best of friends, experienced sibling rivalry. It's a tremendous relief to Beezus to learn that it's okay not to get along with Ramona all the time, and she realizes that along with the annoying times, she and her sister share plenty of affectionate moments as well.

Originally published in the 1950s, some things are obviously rather dated, but as a child of the 1970's I could completely relate to these two little girls. I am sure kids today can also, especially if they have younger sisters!

4-0 out of 5 stars Ah, Sisterhood
Poor Beezus. This story is mainly focused about her, and how her little sister, Ramona is always messing everything up for her. Beverly Cleary does a wonderful job of describing how horrible little sisters can be. Beezus feels like a terrible person because there are times when she doesn't love Ramona, but is reassured when she finds out that sisters don't have to love each other all the time. This book is a great read for children (especially those with siblings.) ... Read more

David likes his family the way it has always been, just him and Mom and Dad. He never wanted to be a big brother. And he certainly didn"t want Jin Woo, the little baby from Korea, to join the family. Now Jin Woo is getting all the attention, and David feels as if no one cares about him anymore. But then a surprising letter helps him to understand that being a brother can mean being surrounded with more love than ever. Eve Bunting and Chris Soentpiet bring the same deep emotion that distinguished their previous collaboration, So Far from the Sea, to this moving story of an adoptive family that has love to spare. ... The book Jin Woo tells a story with words but you don't have to look at the words. It's just as good with the illustrations. The illustrations show brilliant and life like pictures. Bright and beautiful illustrations can really catch one's eye. Chris's pictures are the best. I love his creative pictures. I give it five stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars A sibling's story of adoption
Eve Bunting, the popular children's author has written this book about a boy named David's feelings when his new brother, Jin Woo, arrives from Korea. David, who is Caucasian like his parents, wonders if there was as much anticipation and fanfare when he was adopted. He deals with mixed feelings as his parents get the phone call and they all drive to the airport to pick up Jin Woo. He thinks he's happy about the new arrival, but he's unsure about what changes the baby will bring, and if his parents will have still have enough time & love for him. (When his mother says "I can't wait for the baby to arrive," David thinks, "I can wait. I could wait longer.")

When Jin Woo arrives (about six months old, I'd say), David gets to hold him, and when he plays "this little piggy" with his little brother, he is the recipient of Jin Woo's first laugh.

When they arrive home, his mother hands him a letter which she says is from Jin Woo. "...I'm glad that I have you to help me. Mom and Dad told me how much they love you. And how much they will love me. They say they have so much love inside of them that what they give to me won't take any away from you." David is reassured and feels happy. The ending illustration is a lovely family picture of the four of them.

The illustrator, Chris Sontpiet (a Korean adoptee himself) has pictured the tale in brightly-lit watercolors and animated expressions that lend a bit of a hyper-real aura to the illustrations. The emotions are nicely accentuated and David's contrasting feelings are well-portrayed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Touching Book
As a family with a child who was adopted from Guatemala, we always look for adoptive family stories. We knew this would be good because Eve Bunting is already one of our favorites. But this lovely book exceeded our expectations. The words were beautiful and the pictures were so wonderful. As we were reading it, all the adults were teary eyed. The next day, we reread it and our little 8 year old was as interested as the day before, and her Godfather, an artist himself ,was amazed at how the pictures show the detail and the emotion in the family so beautifully and so clearly. We recommend it wholeheartedly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A New Baby
Even though Davey is not looking forward to getting a new baby brother, when Jin Woo comes Davey loves him. When Eve Bunting writes a words or a sentence, Chris Soentpiet draws an illustration where it's supposed to be. Chris Soentpiet is an excellent artist. This is the best book ever! This book has great descriptive language. Caitlin H.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Grass Is Greener" as a "Big Boy", Not as a Baby
With soft, charming, and cheerful pen and ink illustrations and expressive characters, Hurwitz provides a imaginative, educational, and unique variation on the familiar themes of sibling rivalry created by the arrival of a new baby and a child who doesn't want to go to school.Jealous of the attention his baby sister Elsia receives and tired of life as a "big boy," four-year old Russell begs to stay home from nursery school like baby Elsia. Russell's clever mother grants his request literally. She treats him exactly "like a baby."She feeds him only baby food for breakfast, refuses to let him watch TV or play with his Legos, makes him take a nap, puts him in the playpen with Elsia, and gives him a bottle of hot milk to drink.Warned that his lunch will be mashed carrots, peas and banana, Russell decides its better to be a "big boy" and go to school.Embarrassed to tell his school friends why he's late, Russell says: "It's a secret." Recommended for all children aged 4 to 8 and highly recommended those with young siblings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful story to read to your child!!!
My son is 2 years old and he LOVES this book. When it is time for bed, he says, "Angel Baby," and reaches for the book. The pictures are vibrant and beautiful, and the smooth flowing words captivate his attention - from beginning to end. I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book!
I have a three and a half and two year old and they love this book. My three year old recites the words and my two year old points to all the pictures. The illustrations are great! Very colorful and action-packed. I love reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Babies - Two View Points
Pat Cummings presents a wonderfully humorous story that shares the view of a mother and a sibling towards a baby. This book would be an excellent one to share with an older sibling regarding the way parents see a baby and they see a baby. Thank you Pat for such a caring story. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A bit harsh
In fairness, this book DOES portray real-life for the older sibling of twins. However, I found it harsh and unpleasant as it mostly deals with the negative aspects until the end. I think the older siblings already know the negative aspects, and need to focus on the more positive aspects of having twin babies in the house! We read it once and that was it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for the big sister of twins
This book really expresses the joys and frustrations of being the Big Sister to twins (and the parents too). We received this as a gift and it is still a family favorite. Our "special big girl" is 6 1/2 and our twinnies are just turning 5. Give this to someone you know who is expecting a double blessing. The illustrations are colorful and are right on the mark!

4-0 out of 5 stars Our twins loved it!
Our son and our daughter both read twinnies. Because they are twins they could really relate and both were happy for the happy ending. A cute fun read on twins and an older siblings feelings for twins.

Bright and fun illustrations!

5-0 out of 5 stars Twinnies has become a favorite at our house.
My children, including 3 yr old twin girls love this book. The twins, because they think it is about them. The older ones enjoy it because their life with younger twin siblings is accurately portrayed. The illustrations are fabulous.

4-0 out of 5 stars Touching perspective of twins from big sister's view.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend its reading to any child who has enjoyed the addition of a new sibling to her family and who truly appreciates both positive and negative implications of that addition.

The illustrations are perfect companions to the story line and even caused me a sentimental tear. I also think parents and grandparents of twins, especially those with an older child as well will truly appreciate this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars not what I thought
I too loved Happy Birth Day, but this book just makes having a younger sibling seem like a negative experience. When I read it with my 3 yo I have to leave out parts that are too negative. The child in the book acts out badly in light of all the attention the new baby is getting...going as far as wearing baby's hat acting like a baby herself and competing for attention in bratty ways. I'm not saying this won't happen in my own family...but who wants to give their preschooler these ideas?
Almost every page is a picture of the older child making a snotty face at the baby..even at the end..she never really accepts the new baby.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great to ease that adjustment!
We received this as a gift for my 2 1/2 yr old daughter when our son was born. The pictures are beautiful and the story is so sweet. It definitely helped her with the adjustment of having him around. She really identified with the little girl in the book and still, a year later, she loves to read it. And I love it so much that I am giving it to friends expecting a second child!

5-0 out of 5 stars A reassuring book
My son loved this book before his little sister was born, and now that she's a year old, we're still reading it. (We change genders for the baby.) It has helped him feel that it's okay to be the big boy and to feel gently superior because of it. I say gently because it's an age-specific superiority which he knows won't last once his sister gets bigger. We started reading it before he was potty trained, and I believe it helped him on that road, too, since using the potty is part of being "superior." :-) I like this book because it acknowledges the confusion, fear and anger that older siblings can have -- and it encourages a nice relationship with the younger sibling.

2-0 out of 5 stars Another overly negative book for new siblings
Our family loves the book Happy Birth Day by the same author and illustrator, so I was delighted to see Hi New Baby! on the bookstore shelf -- it even features the same family as Happy Birth Day. However, when I read this book, I was very disappointed -- like too many other books in this genre, it dwells very heavily on the negative feelings an older child has about a new baby, and only on the last page is any positive feeling expressed. Of course it's important to acknowledge the negative feelings an older child will have -- but a book that presents a more balanced picture of feelings about new siblinghood, such as Joanna Cole's books I'm a Big Brother and I'm a Big Sister, or Martin Waddell's lovely book When the Teddy Bears Came, seems much more appropriate and comforting reading for siblings-to-be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hi New Harris and Emberley book
Harris and Emberley have again joined forces to create a wonderful book. Hi New Baby helps parents and families adjust to a new baby with this up-close look from a not-so-sure- about-the -new-baby sibling. Emberley's soft illustrations capture those funny new born looks. A perfect new baby gift for the brothers and sisters at home.

What a delightful series Harris and Emberley have provided to help educate our youngsters on sexuality and family life. THANKS! ... Read more
