4-0 out of 5 stars A New Baby at Koko Bear's House
This is a terrific book to help prepare children for their baby brothers or sisters. I have a 4 year old son and another child on the way and my son has enjoyed reading A New Baby at Koko Bear's House with me. It has elicited questions on my son's part and allowed us to discuss issues further. It covers several different topics including mom and dad going to the hospital and the fact that the baby isn't an instant playmate. In addition, the illustrations are very appealing to young children. As an extra bonus for the parents, the author includes many helpful hints (on the bottom of each page) to help make your older child's transition easier. ... Read more

Book Description

Vera heard the baby crying as they passed her bedroom window.
How could anyone like that loud, smelly thing?

Where can Vera find some peace and quiet with a new baby in the house?

Now that Vera's baby sister, Ruthie, has arrived, Vera feels there's no place left in the house for her. The baby is loud and smelly, and she fills up every room. Vera wants nothing to do with Ruthie. When Grandpa comes up with a plan to make a special bean tent for Vera out in the yard, Vera is all for it. Of course, as beans and vines grow, so, too, do babies-and who knows where that might lead?
In her signature style, Vera Rosenberry explores another pivotal childhood experience in this honest and funny story.

The irresistible and irrepressible Mole Sisters!

After starting out in a new direction, the Mole Sisters find themselves in the middle of a field of wavy wheat. Back and forth, up and down, the Mole Sisters play the time away, going everywhere they can -- including straight to bed at the end of their tiring day.

With unfaltering optimism, the Mole Sisters make the most out of each day. They are always ready to laugh and find every opportunity for fun! The sisters continue to make molehills out of all the mountains that stand in their way.

Roslyn Schwartz's colored-pencil artwork is bright and lush, and she conveys the Mole Sisters' love for life with minimum text that is easy to follow for any toddler or preschooler. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Preschool
It is always delightful to see good new books for children, and I believe that the "Mole Sisters" will become nursery classics. The illustration of the entire series is exquisite--simple, yet vivid and witty. The prose is spare, with each word perfectly chosen, and room for parent-child extended discussion of the action. The characters are charming, likeable, confident, and optimistic without being in any way saccharine. My daughter was given several of the Mole Sisters books as a 2nd birthday present, since which I have bought the others for ourselves, and have bought all of them, many times over, as gifts for other children. My daughter, now 3, began reading to herself at a very early age, and these were among the first books that she read alone. My two younger children are also choosing these over and over again to have read to them. Because of the gently philosophical subject matter of the books they are also entirely suitable for slightly older children, who will easily master the text, but who will then have questions about the topics raised. My advice is: get them all. If you don't want to take the risk, then get one--frankly, at this price you can afford to take a chance--and I'm sure that you'll want the others. They are all wonderful, although my own favourite (by a small margin)is "Wavy Wheat". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Thinking About it Has Me in Tears
Thank you, Amazon- I haven't thought about this book in nearly twenty years.
Sobs. GUT WRENCHING sobs. This is what to expect from this beautiful story.
I ordered my own copy today and can't wait to read it again.
Looks like I'm in good company.
Buy this book. If not for yourself, for your children.
Beats the hell out of some of the schlock put out nowadays.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching short story
I read this story in my literature textbook my sophomore year in high school. I am very impressed by this story and how well it is written. It was so short and even made me cry at the end. I often try to find other short stories to read that are as good as this one but have yet to find one that is quite as much to my taste as is The Scarlet Ibis.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE CURE for sibling rivalry
In my Freshman English class in high school, we were told to read the first half of this story.Always the troublemaker - and the avid reader - I finished very quickly and decided to read on until our time was up.I was soon found out, as I burst into tears in the middle of class and had to leave to regain my composure.Everyone else hurried to see what I had gotten so broken up about.Needless to say, this was a powerful reminder to me of human fragility, ultimate remorse, and the necessity of compassion.I only wish I hadn't had to return the textbook it was in - I hadn't been able to find a copy of this story until now.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best story yet
i am 15 years old i am in high school and my teacher had recommened me to read The Scarlet Ibis. When i had read this story it had moved me very emotionally and it was a book i will always remember. This book i will recommend it to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life's lessons
I read this book when i was in the 2nd grade at Kirwan Elementary School on St. Thomas Virgin Islands. It was the first story that i read that mademe cry. Why?Cause i could relate to it.Iw as like Doodle brother.Very proud and never wanted anything to make me feel inferior. My brother were not handicappeed but they were younger than i am and I felt that i was better than they were and that they couldn't be around me cause they werent able to "keep up". After i read that book i changed my whole perspective.Imagine.i couldn't be no more than 7 or 8 years old but I understood I needed to be different towards those that I love before it was too late to do that.Doodle's older brother realizes this too late.He realized too late that it is more important to love his brother no matter what others thought about him.I think that this is a good book for all youngsters to read.It will develope that sense of what is wrong and right in them. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for children with new siblings!
This book puts words and pictures to many of the feelings young children have about having a new sibling in the family. The "Gran" in the story helps children to manage their feelings, answers questions, and ultimately reintroduces Darcy (hence your own child) to the family. My favorite book to give to families with new siblings, thought not easy to find. ... Read more

Book Description

LYNNE REID BANKS, bestselling author of the award-winning Indian in the Cupboard books, has created a darkly comic, modern classic tale of good and evil. As powerful as it is funny, ANGELA AND DIABOLA is a story that will speak to young readers on many levels. Twins Angela and Diabola come into the world as different as night and day. From the very beginning, Angela is a happy, beautiful, perfect, blue-eyed little girl. A joy to her parents, she never, never cries. Diabola arrives kicking and screaming, her green eyes flashing and her not-pretty face purple with rage. She is the bane of her parents' lives. With each passing day, Angela becomes more loving, caring, and beautiful. Meanwhile, Diabola tries her best (worst) to be as hateful and revolting as she can be. And she is successful at it-really successful. While Angela makes everyone happy, Diabola makes people infuriated, frightened, and sick to their stomachs. When the twins are old enough for school, it's a nightmare. Angela loves school, and the teacher loves Angela. Diabola has found another place to be her outrageous and appalling self. She spits in the teacher's eye and worse. No one has ever seen such a dreadful child and no one knows what to do about her-not the twins' parents, not the teachers, not even the authorities. Only Angela has the power to affect her twin. But changing Diabola comes at a terrible price... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding the Balance between Good and Evil
I read this book from an adult's perspective.

Like many of the reviews have already said, this book was vividly descriptive in nature and very alluring in plot.

The take home lesson for any reader would be that we should not just see things as absolute good or absolute evil, but instead see the grey areas - the fine line that separates good and evil.

We may not be angelic like Angela or demonic like Diabola. But we find the balance of good and evil in all of us human beings. Depending on which side triumphs over the side on occasions, we behave accordingly - angelically or irrately.

4-0 out of 5 stars Angel and Devil
Its girl! It's actually two girls. Twins: Angela and Diabla. Angela is as sweet as an angel and , her twin sister, Diabla is the opposite. Diablaalways throws things at Angela, but Angela still loves her anyway. Angela always want to be with be with her sister Diabla. When Angela and Diabla are together it calms diabla down.Diabla can make things cacth on fire and make buildings fall down. But when Angela is around Diabla can't do any harm to anyone. I realy enjoed this book. If you like contmporary fiction, you might enjoy Angela and Diabla.

4-0 out of 5 stars Angela and Diabola
I've borrowed this book from the school library.Well, what I can say about this book is,it's very interesting. It is about a pair of twins. One is good(called Jill),another is bad(called Jane). But later their parents made them to be christian and the good one called Angela while the bad one called Diabola. Everyone loves Angela much and hate Diabola. When the twins grow up, they have power to do good things and bad things. Of course, the good one do good and the bad one do bad. Their power were so strong that the bad one can make people sick by using her eyes and the good one can cure them if she want. I think this book is really interesting because no book I've read have got such extreme case.

5-0 out of 5 stars A super read-a-loud
I read this book to my 6th grade language arts class to start the year.It allows us to discuss good-vs-evil, and to hear a hilariously funny book.We frequently stop to make predictions about what will happen next.Everytime I stop reading, they want more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Book For Entertainment
I loved this book so much. I first read it at school. It's one of those books that keep you turning the page and craving for more. I think it was awesome and everyone should read it. The characters were amazing and full of life. The storyline was incredible. It was just awesome. It completely blew me away. It's the next best thing after the Harry Potter books. ... Read more

Book Description

Jenny's baby brother Henry is having his one-month birthday -- his first-moon, as it's called in Chinese. And even though Jenny's sure he doesn't deserve it -- all Henry does is sleep, eat, and cry -- there's a big celebration planned for him. Together, Jenny and her grandma get everything ready, from dyeing eggs a lucky red to preparing pigs' feet and ginger soup. And someday, when Henry's old enough to appreciate all her hard work, Jenny will tell him how lucky he was to have her in charge.

The childlike charm of Lenore Look's story is perfectly captured in Yumi Heo's naïve illustrations, which give readers the impression that Jenny drew them herself. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars more info please, and clearly
This is a book about a first moon birthday, which is a chinese/ korean celebration of a one month birthday. I am interested in seeing stories about cultures other than my own. However, I found that this book was all over the place. In one sentence they would be talking about a tradition or meal, next sentence a complete 180, talking about a completely different topic. There are a lot of analogies in this book, and unusual sentences. This is probably a really sweet book for those you can relate to it, first hand. I do not know much about Chinese/Korean traditions. Sentence Example from book, about grandma making dinner,"Her fingernails scrape off the warts on the wood fungus." I needed a little more explanation of what that means, and so did my 6 year old. She wondered why they were cooking warts, wood, and fungus for a special occasion dinner. I liked the book's theme. I love to see books that bridge the gap and help understand other cultures and traditions.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real winner!
"Henry's First-Moon Birthday" truly captures a an older sister's enthusiasm in helping her family prepare for her brother's 1-month birthday. Though the customs and the family are very Chinese, the emotions in this book are universal. ... Read more
