5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for special needs children with a tactile need!
My 6 year old son is developmentally disabled. He loves to look at bright pictures and feel different textures. This book is great for both. Although he is six we usually resort to tactile toys intended for infants. How refreshing to find a book that suits his needs and doesn't look babyish! The other books in this series are great as well. Zoo animals, Dogs, and Cats.

5-0 out of 5 stars So much fun
My six month old daughter starts to giggle and shake when I pull this book out. She loves this book. I read it to her and let her feel all the animals. Everytime I turn the page she squeals with excitement. I love that it is a board book, too. She can hold it and gum it like babies do with EVERYTHING and it is not ruined. This is a real fun book to read to babies. There are never too young. This one is perfect because she can see the pictures and feel all the fur.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reading for the Car
My son loves this book so much he has a copy of it in the car which he often looks at it when we're going to day care or coming home.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for your pretoddler
My son is just 10 months & he loves this book. He goes over to his books & always finds that one so he can touch the fluffy chick. He actually sits & lets me turn the pages in this book so he can touch all the animals. His favorites are the chick & the whooly lamb. I bought this book for my son a few months ago & he is fascinated by being able to touch the different animal textures. When we are reading other books that talk about chicks or lambs he will go over & look for this book! He apparently makes the connection!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great first book for your baby!
This is one of the first books that I read to my son Zachary. From day one, he was always interested in this book. Now 3 years old, he still loves to look at the photos and touch the pages. It is a great book from baby to toddler. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Goats: A Kid's Guide To Raising and Showing
I purchased this book for my daughter, This book is easy to read and understand. I myself read it and found it very informative. Every question we need answered is in this book. Great reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars ANYBODY's guide to goats
I first bought this book several years ago for an 8-year-old friend who was getting her first goat. I think I have borrowed it back half a dozen times, and regularly recommended it to adults as well as "kids". Although geared toward children, it does NOT talk down to children. It tells the reader (of any age) everything the novice goat owner needs to know without all the extra detail that just gets in the way when you are looking for the basics.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best!
Although this book is meant for children, it is the best of the many books I have bought about goats.

As a "newbie" to goats, I have bought several books to try and expand my knowledge and ensure that I am caring for them correctly, and this was the very best.

I would recommend to all new or prospective goat owners, that this be the first book you purchase, you won't be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Goats
I enjoyed this book a lot because I have always loved goats and have never had one. My aunt is thinking about starting a goat farm in a couple of years, but if I can not have goats right now, I would like to read about them.

Book Description

More than anything, Beatrice longs to be a schoolgirl. But in her small African village, only children who can afford uniforms and books can go to school. Beatrice knows that with six children to care for, her family is much too poor.

But then Beatrice receives a wonderful gift from some people far away -- a goat! Fat and sleek as a ripe mango, Mugisa (which means "luck") gives milk that Beatrice can sell. With Mugisa's help, it looks as if Beatrice's dream may come true after all.

Page McBrier and Lori Lohstoeter beautifully recount this true story about how one child, given the right tools, is able to lift her family out of poverty. Thanks to Heifer Project International -- a charitable organization that donates livestock to poor communities around the world -- other families like Beatrice's will also have a chance to change their lives. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars a great gift idea
Buy this book and then donate a goat through the heifer foundation in a child's name. Together they make a great gift. Be creative: throw in some goat cheese and other goat items and make it a gift for a whole family.

The book is a true story of how a little girl's family got a goat that, more or less, changed their lives. Very cute story and a good cause.

4-0 out of 5 stars a gentle book with a powerful message
Our 5 & 7 year olds love this glimpse into a life so different from their own, and loved seeing the work of Heifer International in action. This is a great way to show youngish children how a small action can have a big result, and how people can take a small opportunity, and with hard work, turn it into something that can change their life. Written with a warm gentleness, this is definitely a book for sharing.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Eloquent, Uplifting Story
Beatrice lives in the village of Kisinga, Uganda with her mother and five younger brothers and sisters. Life is hard and the family is very poor. Beatrice dreams of going to school, but knows that the family probably will never have the money for books and a uniform, so that she can attend. And then one day everything changes; the family receives a goat. Beatrice names the goat Mugisa, which means lucky because her mother said the goat was their lucky gift. Soon the goat gives birth to two kids and the family's life begins to change. They have milk to drink and some to sell and in time, they are able to sell one of the kids to improve their lives even more. They build a new sturdy hut with a steel roof that won't leak and are even able to make Beatrice's dream of going to school come true..... Based on the true story of how one family was helped by Heifer Project International, an organization that donates livestock to poor communities, Page McBrier's beautiful and engaging picture book shows how different life can be in other parts of the world and how little it takes to bring hope and changes to developing countries. Her eloquent text is complimented by Lori Lohstoeter's rich and expressive illustrations and together, in a very simple, gentle way, they show youngsters how something, even as small as a goat, can lift a family out of desperate poverty and give them a better life. Perfect for children 4-8, Beatrice's Goat is an uplifting story told with great insight and a wonderful addition to all home bookshelves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great message, great charm, and fun
You can't do better than a book with a great message, that also has a charming story that kids love to read again and again. My daughter is 6 and has read this book many times. It's made her appreciate what she gets for dinner when she realizes that a whole family's food supply could be profoundly affected by owning one goat!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Wonderful Charity and Heartfelt Story
If you are trying to teach your children the value of volunteerism and sharing this book is for you! Not only is the story genuine and touching but it supports one of the best charities in existence today. Children all over the world have so much less then children born in the US and with just a simple gift of a goat you can help to change a family's life. What the story doesn't tell you are how goats/cows/chickens/pigs, etc. have also helped keep families from "selling" their young daughters into prostitution to support their families. If you want to do something worthwhile for a family much less fortunate then your own - - BUY A GOAT - - you'll be so happy you did. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars MILK MAKERS
I understand why this was a reading rainbow book. It is a great experiment activity non-fiction book. This book exaplins how milk is processed. Most children most likely think that the milk in the fridge comes from the store. What they may not realize is that it comes from a farm miles away. This book goes into great detail how milk is made, and the makeup of cattle. it also gives brief descriptions of variuos types of cattle and dairy products. The illustrations use labels and bright colors. I think this is a good non-fiction book for children. It is in a language that they understand and it is easily read. The book is also very accurate as are all, her books. Gibbons was raised on a dairy farm and has made numerous trips to the dairy farm.
In close this is a good book for children, especially for a science unit. I would have this in my classroom library for childen to perhaps complete a report about milk or other products. Gibbons has a great series on the way variuos things are made.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource book on farming and dairy production
This book is highly enjoyable and informative for children, and I think that every child with an interest in farming would be happy to own a copy. I strongly recommend this book to parents everywhere!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
this was such a great story for our kids to read - we live near a dairy farm and this book gave them a lot of insight into the real working of a dairy farm - it answered a lot of their questions and ours too! We love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book to introduce children to milk productio
We took this book out from our local library and found it to be so good we are buying it! My husbands family were dairy farmers and we try to educate our daughters about dairy farming as much as possible. I recommend this book to anyone with a young child interested in cows, milk or farming. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding in every way
This has been a favorite book of ours for years and years and years. "The Year at Maple Hill Farm" is written and illustrated by Alice and Martin Provenson. It documents, from January through December, the hard tasks and simple pleasures inherent in life on a farm--everything from bird migrations to the foaling of the horses to lazy summer days spent doing nothing more important swatting flies.

Humans and animals co-exist peacefully here. The illustrations are simple and gently colored, with subtle detail sprinkled throughout. The animals are given a great deal of personality (see especially the cats, who are wonderfully quirky) and the story itself, while utterly basic and free of frills, has an undertow of narrative propulsion that makes each page seem a natural outgrowth of the previous page.

I can't recommend the book highly enough. If you live in the country, you will recognize so much of what is here. If you live in the city, you will welcome the peaceful rhythms of this charming book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars my childhood as a book!
This was my all-time-favorite book growing up as a child--I literally read it until it was falling apart at the seams. I loved the wry humor of it and they way that it didn't "talk down" to kids, like a lot of other children's books in the seventies (as I remember them, anyway). When my mother and I learned it was going out of print (this was probably the late eighties), my mom bought all the copies she could find, and kept them in her closet to give to the young children her nieces and nephews kept having. And I think there is still the last copy hidded away in that closet for my as-yet-unborn child. I searched for it here on a lark, and I am so happy to see it back in print for a whole other generation to enjoy!! I definitely be buying copies for all the children of my friends!

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK!!
I checked this book out so many times from the school library when I was little, that the librarian asked my parents to buy me a copy so that other kids could have a chance to check it out. The cats , by far, were my favorite part, especially MAX! If you know a child that likes animals, this is the book to get them!! It's fun, has great pictures, great humor, and is just my all around favorite book of my childhood!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite book for 20 something years.....now my son's too
I was 3 years or so when my mom starting reading me this book. It's one of the most memorable events of my childhood. Now my book is falling apart but my son, who is almost 4, can say every line with me. It is so charming and funny. Tonight I sat down to try and find a replacement for my old book and was delighted to find it on Amazon. All my friends want it for their children too. I hope Alice and Martin know who much it means to all of us. Thanks and keep it for generations

5-0 out of 5 stars Fondest Childhood Memories-Mine and Passed Down
This is the most memorable book of my childhood and adult life. I read it countless times as a child, and kept it safe until I was able to share this wonderful creation with my niece, Phylicia, and nephew, Mark. As a child, living in the country, books were all I had, and this one kept me content for hours. In turn, Fee and Mark grew to love it as it covered every animal they had been exposed to in their short lives. It gave them insight into the animal's personalities, how to treat them, how to care for them. They got to imagine having these types of pets of their own, and it made for many creative days for the three of us, reading and learning together.

3-0 out of 5 stars Reacuring Nightmares
This was my absolute favorite book as a young girl. I must have spent thousands of hours just looking over each characteristic of each animal. I used to have the same nightmare over and over as a child. It involved a mean, bad..., billy goat with red eyes. I haven't looked at this book for 5 minuets and 11 years. I just realized where my nightmares came from. It has been a phsycological breakthrough. Sam the Billy Goat. As I went on reading the book, now a full grown adult, there is some questions that raised about the evil characteristics of some of the animals. All I can say is beware...childrens books are powerful...ex: Where the Wild things are...enough rambling... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for readers intruged to learn about horses
Very good book, I own it. Excellent information at hand at any time. Origins, colors, uses and more of each breed. Just not enough color and I think it is a bit too long written for younger riders and horse lovers alike. Otherwise it would have gotten five stars for older enthusiasts but four is quite well overall.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it as a kid and still do!
I remember coming across this book in my school library when I was about 10 or 11 and being enchanted with Wesley Dennis' beautiful paintings, as well as the little stories Mrs. Henry told of each breed. Some are condensations of her other books, like Misty of Chincoteague and King of the Wind. Very informative, as they don't simply tell you dry facts but bring each breed to life in the context of a particular time and place. Definitely recommend it & any of Mrs. Henry's books to horse-crazy kids or adults!

5-0 out of 5 stars Album of Horses

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference tool
My very first chickens are 2 months old now, and I've referred back to this book countless times, for help with making brooder boxes, when to remove the heat lamp, buying feeders/waterers, making our coop, treating diarrhea, when to switch feeds, how to tell a cockerel from a pullet (!), to find out if panting in 90-degree weather is normal (it is), etc., etc. It may be written for kids, but it is not condescending. I appreciate the practical and have-fun approach. I just read about the different chicken sounds, and learned that the cool sound my hens make when they're happy is called "singing." Get the book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for children
This book is easy to read. I thought it was helpful even for the adult beginner. A great book for a child/parent project, 4-H or school raising chicks. 4 stars because I had to explain many of the words used to my child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great advice for the novice wanting to raise chickens
Raising healthy chickens is a new experience for most kids today. Buying a few eggs to hatch or getting a couple of cute chicks at Easter is easy, but what happens when they start to get bigger! We know they eat and poop a lot but how do we help them survive to the point where they can actually lay an egg? What do you feed them? Where do you keep them? Can a chicken really make a good pet? You'll find answers to all these and many more questions in this wonderfully written and easy to understand book about raising chickens. Gail Damerow must have raised more than just a few birds because she demonstrates a solid understanding of the common and not-so-common issues facing the rural or urban chicken farmer ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars His constant favorite
My son just turned one yr old last week and this book has been his favorite for the last three months. "Goodnight Moon," is alright, and "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" is a close second, but this one he loves. At first he would cuddle with me while I read it to him, but now that he is a little older he is determined to turn the pages himself. I have the paperback version and need to buy another copy as I've had to repair numerous pages while he learns how to turn paper pages. Poor book. I'd put it up until he's older, but he will look all over the living room for this one and then sit down in the middle of the floor and slowly "read" the book 2-3 times before he is ready for the next activity.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect lullaby
My 2 1/2 year old loves this book and song. The music is printed at the end - and it puts her right to sleep nearly every time. She sings the song whenever she is putting her animals to bed, and it is a lovely story! The illustrations are great for this age - I wholly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great songs, story, and illustrations.
This is one of a few books that get the "again, again" rating from my 3 year old. He loves the song and story and of course the animals. If is running too long its easy to skip a couple of animals and get to the end w/o compromising the story.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Bedtime story book.
My two year old loves Barnyard Lullaby but can not resist closing her eyes to sleep as I read the last two lines on every-other page: "Go to sleep, my sweetheart, Tomorrow is a brand-new day". When we are not reading this story at bedtime, she loves to name the animals and make each one's sound. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bilingual choice for active boy
Trying to bring up our children with english and german, this book offers a great opportunity to read, as the pictures are obvious and beautifully photographed, and I can translate quickly, without the need of a dictionary. My boy doesn't sit still for long, so single images are great, he can concentrate for as long as possible, without a story being interupted, if he's patient I can make a story around an item, if not we just move from image to image. I love the series, and we have the other titles as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
I probably have about 6 books in the "My First" series and found this is yet another good book in this series. I like the way that the "My First" books categorize things (noisy animals, farm colors, etc.) and this one is well done. They are all essentially picture dictionaries and a bit boring for parents but our kids love looking at them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
This series of board books are fantastic.

I started collecting these for my daughter after she was given one at 6 months and this is what we started to read to her every night. She woud sit and demand it to be read over and over and over again. The board pages and are easy for baby and toddler to turn and the pictures (real photography not illustrations) are wonderful.

The farm one has lots of animals, fruit and vegetables and reading them over and over my toddler can now read and say the names of each thing herself while pointing to them. She recognises things she sees on her dinner plate and goes and gets the book to compare.

If your looking for a great picture book to share with your baby this is the one (and the series of books) to buy. You can never have too many books to read with your children.

5-0 out of 5 stars reading in louisiana
I bought this book for my 14 month old little boy. He loves it - he carries it around the house. Of course, he can't read it yet, but he loves to point at the different, beautifully pictured animals in the book and listen to me say their names. He can even point to some of them after I say their names now! I love this book - great for toddlers. Easy to read, durable!

4-0 out of 5 stars My first farm board book
We like the board book for several reasons. The bright colors and the shape of the animal characters. The board pages are great because they stand upright and are durable. The babies love the stimulation. It's a good way to encourage the development of colors and shapes while they are here in our Intensivecare Nursery. One of our baby who is on a ventilator for a long time loves to look at Zebra until he goes back to sleep. Thank you for letting me write this review. Books are great for

everyone. And we are very fortunate that the colorful books are available for sick infants as well. NICU RN ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pop Up Heaven!
This is a favorite of my 15 month old. He has had this book since he was about 6 months old and has enjoyed it since the start. All the Snappy books are fantastic and we have most of them. Snappy Farm Animals is colorful and simple to read. Babies love the colors and the animals. The farm starts out nosiy and slowly calms down as the animals go to sleep and the farmer waves goodbye.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Pop-Up Book
I bought this for my little niece, and it is much beloved. It is an amazingly well-designed pop-up book, with vivid, humorous images and pop-up features that work well and stand up to repeated (and repeated and repeated) readings. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for young childres
I am buying the 2nd copy of this book for my 2 year old grandson. It is one of his favorite books but due to his age and the fact he looks at this book a lot, it has some torn pop-ups. The pictures and pop-ups are large and colorful and are a good learning tool for a young child because there is not so much on a page that it overwhelms them. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite in "Snappy" series
We have most of the SNAPPY books but this is one of our favorites. My 2 year old son absolutely loves all of these books. I would highly recommend the whole set.

5-0 out of 5 stars You must have this book!
We received this book as a gift and it has become THE BOOK to be read often and daily to my daughter. She has learned what all the animals say and at 18 months pages through the book, making the sounds all on her own. The book is very sturdy so despite the test my daughter is giving it most of the pop-ups are still intact. I plan on purchasing all the other books in this series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Librarians love it, too!
Deborah Bruss' Book! Book! Book! is a must-have for any home or school library. As an elementary school librarian, I find it a perfect way to introduce children to the joys of visiting the library. The simple storyline delights its readers as barnyard animals make their first trek to the library. Each animal, in its own language, asks the librarian for a book. First and second graders laugh when the hen gets what she wants. Then, still, another surprise comes on the last page. Tiphanie Beeke's illustrations draw the reader and the audience in. Bright, bold colors capture the interest of my students and make it an enjoyable book to share with a class. Book! Book! Book! is a favorite that my students ask me to read again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Barnyard Fun.....
The poor farm animals are bored. The kids have all gone back to school and left them alone. The horse hung his head, the cow complained, the goat grumbled, the pig pouted, the duck dozed and the hen heaved a sigh and squawked "I'm bored! And I'm heading to town to find something to do!" So off they all went. Soon they got to town and found themselves in front of the library. It looked like a good place to visit since the people coming out all had smiles on their faces, so the horse went inside, approached the librarian and said neigh neigh. The librarian just stood there and looked puzzled. The horse hung his head and left. Next the cow (moo moo) tried, then the goat (baaah baaah) and pig (oink oink), with the same results. Finally the feisty hen went inside and spoke "Book, Book, Book!" with different results..... Deborah Bruss has written a funny, gentle story that will capture your little one's imaginations. Her simple text is beautifully complemented by Tiphanie Beeke's cheerful, humorous, childlike illustrations and youngsters will enjoy all the entertaining detail on each page. Perfect for preschoolers, Ms Bruss' debut picture book is a winner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book! Book! Book! is a child's delight!
Author Deborah Bruss and illustrator Tiffani Beeke have created a world where rules are broken and expectations are turned upside down. The punchline on the last page is only one part of the joke. Who wouldn't laugh at barnyard animals in the library, a blue horse, and storytime led by a cow? The book offers different levels of participation-barnyard noises for the youngest readers, and, later, repetitive phrases. Other readers will enjoy tracking the location of a well-read amphibian in each bright scene. All will enjoy the plucky animals who give up complaining, grumbling, and pouting when they discover the treasures in the public library. Book! Book! Book! is a perfect preschool storytime read!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book, book, book!
I love this book, book, book! Sure it's a good joke (one that Debbie Bruss has creatively adapted for children), but it's also a delightful story about finding entertainment and pleasure in the pages of a book. Tiphanie Beekman's illustrations are warm and engaging, simple but not simplistic, sweet, with fun details (watch for the ladybug and the mouse). The language is pleasing and direct and offers opportunities for kid participation. Parents and children alike will reach for this smile-provoking book again and again - as will teachers and librarians - it's a beautiful tool for demonstrating what Book! Book! Book! readers already know: sharing a good story is FUN!

5-0 out of 5 stars Book! Book! Book!
This book is an AWESOME book for children. I first heard someone read it in a preschool group and read with such expression that the children were giggling the whole time. Make sure you get loud and do the animal sounds when you read this book to your child! They'll love it. I plan to keep a copy of it on hand to read often. ... Read more
