3-0 out of 5 stars Impressive, but lacking...
I personally feel that this book is for the established artist who knows his basic concepts in art. For the newbie, this might not be the one for you. The drawings within are definitely for those of a slightly higher level.

However, if you are looking to pratice your equine drawings, this is the way to go. The step-by-step drawings are easily to follow, and the guidelines at the beginning of the book serve as a reminder to improve on your drawing skills.

This is truly a good book for practice. If you need the basics, look somewhere else.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book makes it so easy to draw good horses!
I love this book! I gives really easy instructions so you can draw really good horses, even if you couldn't before. It even tells you what kind of pencils and supplies you should have if you want to draw.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "1st Place" horse coloring book
This was the first of the Dover coloring books I purchased for my four year old daughter. It features not only realistic drawings but some instructional/informational text about horse breeds, horse care, horsemanship and riding styles. The rider, both adult and child, are included in the images. My daughter liked it so much we ended up buying all the horse/pony titles by John Green we could find on Amazon including "Horses of the World" and "Ponies of the World". Mr. Green, please do more horse/pony books!

5-0 out of 5 stars My son love it!!
It is a great book...with many drawings that help a 3 years old kid to paint it and the kids love it....my son doesn't know to read but the detailed explanations help us (parents) to explain him what is going on in each page and to create bed stories for him...
Excellent book for a kid who loves animals and horses.

Book Description

You can count on horse-crazy kids to be doing something horse-related, thinking about something horse-related, or planning something horse-related 24 hours a day, seven days a week. That's why Cindy A. Littlefield created the Kids' Book of Horse Games & Puzzles. If kids are going to spend their time horsing around, they might as well jump-start their creativity and boost their problem-solving skills at the same time.

The book is divided into five sections: Word Play, Picture Puzzles, Drawing, Fun and Games, and Brain Teasers. (All the answers are included.)

Take the "Horse and Pony Stall of Fame" challenge by matching up famous equines with their human or television character companions. Snuffle through the "Hungry as a Horse" quiz and see if you can find the names of 14 things horses like to eat hidden in a block of letters. Then break out your best drawing pencils and learn how to draw a horse's portrait in six easy steps.

Fun, horsey cartoons and illustrations adorn every page. And scattered throughout the book are horse riddles, bits of horse trivia, and quotes about horses.

Here, at last, is the perfect book for kids who love puzzles almost as much as they love horses.

There's something magical, almost mystical, about horses. Our earliest ancestors felt it--on the walls and ceilings of the caves of Lascaux and Altamira are magnifcent images of horses that were painted 40,000 years ago.

In Dream Horses: A Poster Book, Bob Langrish, one of the world's leading equine photographers, continues the tradition of celebrating the beauty, the power, and the mystery of the horse. Horse-crazy kids will be enchanted by the book's 30 spectacular poster-size photographs. Horse-loving adults who appreciate fantasy photography will be awestruck by Langrish's superb compositions. With the sure hand of a master, he has manipulated these images so that each shot has a fantastical, even mythological quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best horse coloring books
I bought this for my 4-year old daughter and who was already a great horse-lover. She's now 5-1/2 and it has been one of the few coloring books she has held on to and keeps coming back to. The beautifully detailed drawings are a challenge to color but not too much so. This one, along with John Green's other "horse coloring book masterpiece", Ponies of the World, also from Dover Publications, is a must-have for any child with an interest in horses and coloring. All I can hope is that Mr. Green will publish more horse books!

A GREAT BOOK TO COLOR
It's a very detailed book. The pictures show every bit of detail in the horse from the hocks to the muzzle. Very well designed. I bought it for my daughter, Ella, and she loves it! You need it for your kids!

3-0 out of 5 stars Horses of the World coloring book
My 6 year old daughter loves horses and was thrilled with thisbook. She said "because the horses are so real looking and they have great detail." This book also teaches a little about each breed that is focused on in the drawing. My daughter said " Realistic animals in coloring books are very important to us." meaning children in general. I am very pleased with this book the detail in the drawings are incredibly accurate to the breed, and I have been working with horses for over 20 years. Thankyou so much for such a great coloring book one without cartoon characters. Sincerely, Eileen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Horses - Strength, Grace and Poetry in Motion
I have owned this book for years. I still read it when it is not possible to feel the wind in my hair for real. The breathtaking pictures, the lovely stories and the obvious connection GaWaNi has with Kola, his horse, all make this an outstanding book and mini escape for me. Thank you Mr. Pony Boy and Ms. Boiselle!

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Illustrated book for kids
Nice pics but not a HUGE amount of substance. But, girls who love horses aren't looking for a lot of that anyway! They want pictures and romantic thoughts about being with horses. That's what they get!

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning about horses and life
Leadership through trust and respect is one of the many lessons the young reader will learn from this book. The simple tools and techniques for starting a line of communication with horses are presented in a wise and gentle manner. Indeed, the Native American philosophy of teaching horses coincides with their attitude toward all animals living on, in, or above Mother Earth, and that is responsibility for them and mutual respect among and between them. GaWaNi Pony Boy speaks of creating the right environment for understanding, and his thoughts, words, and deeds are relevant to everyday life. The book is artfully laid out and contains beautiful and decoratively captioned photographs. There are several Native American tales and sayings, such as, "...the reason Creator gave two-leggeds two ears and one mouth was so that we would listen twice as much as we talk." I found this book to be a most enjoyable learning experience and recommend it to adults and youngsters alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a book for all horsenuts!!!!
This a really cool book! I read it from cover to cover. I learned stuff about horses thatI never knew and learned about breeds of horses that I never knew existed! This a good book for beginner horsenuts.

5-0 out of 5 stars DK Handbooks: Horses
I have been taking riding for two years.Just a couple of days ago my instructor said I was the smart intellect of my age group at the barn.I think getting this book really helped. It covers a lot of breeds and information on them. This book is great so if your horse crazy I would reccomend getting this book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Breed Identification and History
I am so glad that I purchased this book.I needed a reference guide to help me identify different breeds of horses and ponies for the Photo Model Horse Shows that I have been participating in.Since I will eventually judge a show, I needed to be prepared to classify horse breeds from the photograph entries that will be sent to me. It is easy to read, the photographs are lovely, and there were only a few breeds not listed.Good job!

3-0 out of 5 stars Well...
The pictures are nice. But otherwise this is just your average guidebook to horses. The information is easy to understand and some of it, like the heights of horses, is represented visually. But if you are looking to knowa little bit about a lot of breeds, this would be a good book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful
I have been riding for ten years and still look back on this book to brush up on my horsemanship!I would recommend it to anyone who is beginning riding or is just getting a horse to have at home. The only thing missingfrom this book is riding information. It covers many breeds and why theyare signifigant, and beginners horsemanship. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate horse training book
These techniques are AMAZING! They go against most conventional methods, but what a way to empower not only the rider/handler/owner but also the horse. You don't need to read the book cover to cover in order to start the work. Some of it seems a bit odd at first, but they truly work. I tried some Ttouches a few years ago, on a whim, and THEY WORKED! Since then I have tried more and more. I even attended a seminar with Linda Tellington-Jones. "Let's Ride" is the best of all her horse books. It covers just about everything. It is written for kids, but it is just as valuable to handlers of all ages. This method of training and this book in particular is a must have for anyone dealing directly with horses...from the saddle or from the ground. Just have someone do the seemingly odd touches on one of your legs, and feel the difference.

4-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT for children!!!

Book Description

Naturalist Hope Ryden's stunning photographs accompany clear, conversational essays telling of her observations and experiences as she tracked the mustangs of the West. Wild horses evolved and roamed in North America until becoming extinct ten thousand years ago. Not until the early sixteenth century, when the conquistadors brought tough mounts to carry them as they explore what is now Mexico and the Southwest, did the horse reappear on American soil. Hope Ryden describes how the Plains Indians adopted the horse, which transformed their culture. But many of their horses escaped into the wild and reverted to primitive behaviors-such as forming tight-knit social groups with complicated social hierarchies-that enabled them to thrive and survive. Horse lovers and history buffs, as well as all who relish a good true-life adventure, will be fascinated and moved by this compelling portrait of a national treasure. Bibliography. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cloud
I read and enjoyed the book it seems to portray the behavior of the wild stallion and his herd very well. Good readablity factor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cloud is a beautiful real life story of amazing wild horses
This is a delightful, moving and insightful book for kids and adults of ALL ages. The print is big enough and the reading level easy enough for young children of reading age but the never before seen photography and insightful understanding shared by the author will thrill adults as well.

No one has ever observed and recorded the real life of any of America's precious, bold, highly intelligent and majestic Wild Horses as Kathren's does in this book. Their evolved social order and sometimes difficult but natural lives are fascinating to get a close look at. I would expect most people to keep this where guests to their home or offices would see it for years to come. This book makes a great gift for many occaisions. The only way this view can be enhanced is to go see the wild horses for oneself. If interested to ride to see the wild ones, contact the American Horse Defense Fund ... and see about taking the ride of your life to see other wild horses.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read book for all ages!
Ginger Kathrens book Cloud: Wild Stallion of the Rockies captures the spirit of our love affair with wild horses and the trials of this long relationship. They have epitomized the American spirit and image yet suffered terribly from our ignorance and disregard all the while maintaining their magnificence. Kathrens book, through vivid images and heartfelt writings, allows the reader both young and old, from east or west to those who have never seen a horse in person or someone that has had the bliss to feel their aura, to all experience the wild horse. This is certainly a book for all ages.

Rarely do we get to enjoy the uniqueness of an animal such as we do with Cloud. People tend to write and think about animals as though they don't have lives of their own, but that is a serious and devastating human shortcoming. As the bumper sticker says, "Humans are not the only species on the planet, we just act like it." Yet from when we first see Cloud as a wobbly-kneed young foal, struggling to keep up, but persevering, we know he is a special and unique soul. This does not waiver all the way to when he is a strong young stallion facing the challenges of nature and man. We can only hope that Kathrens book (and accompanying documentary) will help us again recapture our respect for these magnificent animals before it is too late. Because if wild horses like Cloud disappear, so does the American spirit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful true story about the life of a wild stallion
I couldn't put the book down. The many pictures are beautiful and the story reads like fiction, but is the true story of a wild horse. The writer, who is a film maker, follows Cloud for 5 years beginning on the day he was born. She records the intimate and poignant moments about him and his family and the other wild horses in his Montana wilderness home. As a kid who grew up reading "The Black Stallion" books, I was completely captivated by the true life adventures of this remarkable horse. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to share with your baby
This series of board books are fantastic.

I started collecting these for my daughter after she was given one at 6 months as she loved them so much. The book is simple and easy to read with wonderful real photography (not illustrations)and textures on each page that relate to the text on the page.

It's a great book to get your baby involved in the reading process, to learn what you are saying also means a texture they can actually touch. It's also a book that baby can read alone with easy to turn pages and endless fascination with the different textures.

A wonderful book to get your children learning, thinking and enjoying books. You can never have too many books to read with your children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read for many ages
We have several of the books in this series and I am buying yet another set for a baby shower. From my 16 month old daughter to my 9 year old son, this book has captured their imagination. Ponies of all ages and colors fill the pages with plenty of tactile stimulation for the youngest and the opportunity for the oldest to make up stories as he goes along with each re-reading of the book. Plus it was great before we went on a pony ride as the kids knew what to expect the ponies to feel like. ... Read more

My 5 year old daughter has used both crayon and colored pencils, with pencils being the better choice due to the detail of the beautiful drawings. In addition, it will last a while given the generous 44 pages of drawings. All I can say is "Mr. Green, please give us more". We will be branching out to some of his other books featuring dogs ("Favorite Dogs Coloring Book"), cats ("Wild Cats of the World Coloring Book"), and monkeys ("Monkeys and Apes Coloring Book"). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Horses!
Starting with the ancient Eohippus, Horses! shows the history of and long relationship between people and horses. This book is packed with anatomy, life cycle, and general information. There are numerous labeled illustrations and many breeds are featured. While a well-read horse-loving child may not learn anything new, I learned quite a few things about horse. Did you know that horses only have one toe? Karen Woodworth-Roman, Children's Science Book Review

5-0 out of 5 stars ENTERTAINING AND INFORMATIVE
One would be hard pressed to think of an animal that enjoys more popularity than horses. Consider the parts they have played not only in our country's history but also throughout literature. Children admire them and can imagine all sorts of adventures on horseback.

Gail Gibbons has brought her usual perception and skills to this entertaining book about one of our favorite animals. Noting that the horse's earliest ancestors lived almost 60 million years ago the author traces the migration of horses and their domestication. We're reminded of how useful they were: plowing, pulling wagons and carts, transporting people.

Included is an examination of this animal's anatomy as well as notes on purebred horses from the Arabian to the Palomino to the Clydesdale.

"Horses" is both entertaining and informative for all ages.

Book Description

Fan mail isn't unusual - even when the celebrity in question has four hooves. The great Kelso had a fan club, John Henry still has a loyal following, and surely Secretariat received a letter or two in his time. But when Smarty Jones took the world by storm in 2004, his mailbox overflowed. The underdog horse that nearly won the Triple Crown received more than a million letters in three months. That's five thousand letters every day, many addressed simply to "Smarty Jones, Philadelphia Park."Dozens of these letters from horse lovers, grade-schoolers, animals, and racing fans were selected for Dear Smarty. They're filled with the encouragement we'd all like to hear: "You tried your hardest and you'll always be a champion to me!" This book is a touching, must-have collectible from the Smarty Jones' racing era. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Team Smarty Jones Fan's
I acquired this wonderful outstanding collection written by Bill Valentine at Oaklawn park in Hot Springs, Arkansas during a book sighning.Mr. Valentine and myself shared different stories with each other regarding the overwhelming love and affection America shares with this little chest nut horse.Smarty Jones will also be forever America's favorite son.

This book compiled of several fan mail's from kids, adults, and even other animals were sent to Smarty throughout his career. Many were sent to Smarty Jones, PA and amazingly enough they reached him without any other details of a correct address. That goes to show you how popular this little chest nut was and still is.Even after his retirement to stud he is still getting fan mail by the bags daily.

Each letter in this book is so compelling. Some are written in crayon by the most sincere children who spilled their heart to this beloved horse.I laughed till I cried with some of the letters. Many were written by children who are handicap and see Smarty as their hero and inspiration to overcome any obtacles that stand in their own way to success. This is truly an amazing book to read and feel coming from the hearts of those who love this horse.Team Smarty will be forever in the hearts of America forever.I promise if you say, "Smarty Jones", most everyone will say, "That was one heck of a spunky horse."
