In a series of delightfully imaginary achievements, "nobody's mouse" transforms himself into the beloved hero of his mother, father, sister, and brand-new baby brother. In their very first collaboration, now celebrating its 30th anniversary, Robert Kraus and Jose Aruego give charm and validity to one of childhood's more difficult experiences. 5-0 out of 5 stars My first and favorite book.
My parents read this book to me when I was young and when I was around three, I could reicte the whole thing from memory and then claimed that I could read it. It gave me the confidnce to really learn to read. It is an amazing book that every child should read. I'm seventeen now and it's still my favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars Made me thankful to be who and where I was
I can remember my mom reading this book to me when I was very young. I am 22 now, and I know that my Mom read many books to me when I was young, but this is one that I always remember. I can't even recall the exact subject matter, but I do remember that it made me seriously think about how I would feel if my parents and my sisters weren't with me every day. "Whose Mouse Are You?" made me consciously thankful to be a part of a loving family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Precious memories
This was my daughters very very favorite book. She had all the words memorized by the time she was barely 3. I would ask the questions from the book and she would respond with the answers. I still ask her Whose Mouse Are You ? sometimes and her own baby will be born in October. By the way, until we find out the sex of the baby we are calling him/her mouse. Your kids will love this book too!

5-0 out of 5 stars simple childhood favorite
A small grey mouse with enormous ears is asked by the narrator who he belongs to. Why, he's nobody's mouse!! Where's his mother? Inside the cat!! Where's his father?? Inside a trap!! What about his sister?? She's lost, far, far away... My goodness!! Well, what is he going to DO about it, then?? I'll let you read to find out his fun, creative answers to his life's problems!

Originally published in 1970, "Whose Mouse are You?" is as much fun for young children and beginning readers now as it was back then. The text is short and simple, it rhymes and repeats, so even very young children can get interested in the story and repeat it after a few tellings. The illustrations are wonderfully simple and uncluttered, drawn with only with black yellow and red (from which we can get pink, orange and grey, too!)

When I was a infant/toddler teacher in daycare, "Whose Mouse are You?" was one of the all time favorites. Children just learning how to speak would call out "mouse book!! Mouse book!" and then sit glued to the pages. I've even seen an elementary school art teacher use this book to show how one does NOT need a box of 2 bazillion crayons to make interesting and fun illustrations-"get creative with limited tools" she said, passing out only red, yellow and black markers to the class.

For lapsitting readers as well as beginning readers, "Whose Mouse..." is an excellent choice and a lot of fun!! Enjoy!!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Blessing to find this book!
When I was 7 years old living in LA(1976?) a sales man knocked on our door.He carried with him a huge box painted with three bold stripes in red, blue, and orange. The box was a free gift if you purchased a subscibtion to a "book of the month club"featuring childrens books. We wanted all the books he had with him that day and as luck would have it ,our parents found this to be a great deal. The first book that came in the mail was addressed to my brother and myself. We got mail! When we opened the brown package, the most wonderful book fell on to the floor. The book was so bright and the artwork was so beautiful;it transported my brother and I right into the very HEART of the book.I am a 31 year old women now,yet I can still remember EVERY line from that book. What a joy to know there are other people out there with the same feeling...This story is so wonderful and the ARTWORK is UNFORGETABLE! I hope anyone thinking of buying this book will.I also hope all of the special people who were 'lucky' enough to have this gift in there lives as children will pass it on! ... Read more

The Official Hamtaro Handbook is sure to please enthusiasts ofthe Cartoon Network series. For those more visually oriented, a family tree depicts thehamsters, their owners, the hamster's crushes on other hamsters, and the owner'scrushes on other owners. A Ham-Ham body language dictionary, map of theneighborhood, and synopsis of the first 26 episodes follow, including a full sixpages devoted to the premiere episode. Other sections provide an explanation ofHam-Ham dance steps and the lyrics to the opening and closing theme songs. Thebook ends with "Bijou's Lost Bracelet," a comic created with characters thatresemble 3-D china figurines, and "The Helpful Hamsters to the Rescue," a redand white monochrome comic by Ritsuko Kawaii, the creator of the anime series. But what will undoubtedly gratify fans most are the two large stickers at thefront of the book, one of the unsinkable Hamtaro himself, and one of Bijou, arecent émigré from France. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Fans
I am a huge Hamtaro fan. I surf over the web and have lot's of information about the show. So I decided that I should try to start collecting the books a little while ago. One of my first ones was this book, but I didn't expect to learn more about the show with it. It surprised me a little bit. I found out a few more things with the book and learned alittle bit more about the Ham-Hams. I also really enjoyed the little comics in the back. It doesn't have much new things in it like Season 2 of the show or the guest Ham-Hams (Like Hannah in Season 2 in that one episode), but I enjoyed very much. It is a must have for Hamtaro fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must For Parents Of A Hamtaro Fan
I bought this book for my son who happens to be a Hamtaro freak! Little did I know how much I would get out of it, myself. This book tells you anything and everything you need to know about the show and it's characters. Now my son talks about Hamtaro and I actually know what he's talking about!! He loves it as well....In fact, it's been read so much that it's started to show wear and tear.

This is am excellent book/guide. It has all you need to know about the ham hams, and even tells you how to do the hamtaro dance! It also has a comic, photo's from the show, stickers and the a synopsis to the show's episodes! I highly recommend this book to all hamtaro fans. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Factual; complete; good introduction to an endangered specie
I serve as the Chief of Resource Education at Badlands National Park, one of the few sites in North America that has had black-footed ferrets reintroduced. This book has good information and provides children between the ages of 8 and 12 with a good introduction to this extremely rare mammal species. It is a bit dated as the black-footed ferret recovery program continues; however, it is still a good reference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Hamster Care Guide
This is one of the most informative animal care guides I have ever read. It seems simplistic with its big, bright photos and cartoons; but you soon realize that the information is comprehensive and surprisingly in-depth. Yet fun to read! You learn more about the different hamster breeds than most care guides tell you. I was able to pick out the perfect hamster for my 8 yr. old daughter. And now she knows more about hamsters than most other hamster owners thanks to this book! I enjoyed reading it just as much as she did. And found out things I never knew about hamsters - even after owning several of the furry little critters in my life!

You definitely don't have to be a fan of "Hamtaro" to like this book. I highly recommend it to anyone (kids AND adults!) who want to get a pet hamster.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review from someone who doesn't watch Hamtaro
I bought this book among other hamster owning books out of curiosity, thinking it would just be "for fun." However, this book is far more useful than the ones directed at an older audience. I can definitely see its uses for children as well.

The advice is direct and to the point. There is no agenda here or biased personal views. This is the first book I've found that lists how much room is actually needed for each breed as well as many pictures. This helped greatly when picking out a cage.

It's a book that is very concerned with a hamster's safety, It constantly warns against bullying and animal cruelty. In addition, it stresses responsibility. All in a very practical way.

It goes over hamster body language and emotions. As well as what human behaviors make a hamster unhappy.

Each chapter is followed by a less cutesy checklist for adults that expands on each topic.

This is an all-around solid book for first time owners of any age as well as a great idea. If only Disney and Taco Bell had come out with Dalmation and Chihuahua guidebooks in anticipation of their sudden pet popularity explosion.

5-0 out of 5 stars very cute and very informative
I bought this book for my 5 year old son who loves Hamtaro. I didn't know what to expect with the book, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it combines useful guidance about purchasing and caring for a pet hamster with very entertaining drawings and quotes from Hamtaro and his Ham-Ham friends. The text was factual but not dry or boring at all, and the reading level was pretty much at my son's level (2nd-3rd grade). There are also nice parent guide pages that are written at a slightly higher level.

This would be a good book for someone who's interested in hamsters, even if they aren't into the Hamtaro television show. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book with excellent information!
After reading so many guinea pig care books with often inaccurate to down-right dangerous information, this book was a delightful surprise!! Wonderful and truthful information about environment and care!

I would have given it 5-stars but had to take one off for emphasizing the need for guinea pig companionship with their own kind and then *not* adequately dealing with prevention of the breeding. (The author, a behavioral biologist, believes in the animal's innate right to breed. Unfortunately, there are so many unwanted pets needing homes, it seems irresponsible not to address other possible solutions such as same-sex pairing.)

Overall, though, this book ranks as one of the best that I've seen and any guinea pig lucky enough to have an owner that follows the guidelines in this book will be very happy and very spoilt indeed!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, reliable information
This book is pretty good at providing quality information. However, this book offers few tips about grooming, specific breeds, and safety information (ex: what they can't eat) This book has many good tips and great pictures. It also covers how to get acquainted with your guinea pig, which I have not seen in many other books. Overall, I would reccomend it highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Organized Guinea Pig Care Book
This is a well organized book on guinea pigs for both the novice young owner and a more experienced owner. The graphic designs and page layouts are especially well done. "Tips From the Vet" are highlighted effectively for the reader and there is a sprinkling of humor throughout. Almost all phases of guinea pig care are covered in a practical manner for both adults and younger cavy owners. I recommend it highly. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't tell you how to keep the stink down.
Very colorful and informative book with great photography. Manages to pack a good deal of information into such a small space. Needs some more practical advice. Instead of "wood shavings," for bedding, it'd be nice if the author pointed out that pine shavings help keep the odor down. Also, neglects systems of raising mice in large quantities. This would be good for reptile keepers who raise feeders. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A retelling of some of South Asia's most popular folklore
The Adventures of Mouse Deer: Tales of Indonesia and Malaysia is a retelling of some of South Asia's most popular folklore, about Mouse Deer, a creature who is small but brave and cunning - in many ways similar to the trickster fox of other mythologies, or Brer Rabbit of more contemporary children's literature. Simply narrated so that young people who are just graduating from picturebooks can easily follow the text, The Adventures of Mouse Deer is witty and steeped with the power of myth, as well as high-spirited determination. Black-and-white illustrations intersperse the text in this delightful introduction to an enduring legend.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best out there by far
Of the many hamster books I've seen, this is the one I can't recommend. Visually, it has lots of nice photos and is written mainly to kids. BUT it also has opinion presented as fact. For example, the hamster 'ball', the plastic ball hamster owners have been buying since the 1970s, is described as a "prison" for your hamster!

I take issue with nonfiction books that present opinions as facts, and I'm glad I eventually ignored such a statement and bought one anyway.

Rather than call the toy "a prison," the book should have presented how the toy should be used. The *fact* is that the toy should only be used for 15 to 45 minutes - under supervision - and then your pet should be returned to his cage for at least a pit stop of for food and water. That's what the book should have said. In my case, I found that my hamster is far less timid about exploring a room when he's protected by his ball than when he's out on his own (then he barely moves). Other books, by many experienced hamster owners, suggest the ball as one of many toys for a happy pet hamster.

For a more factual, less opinionated book on owning a hamster, I would suggest anything by Betsy Sikora Siino. There's "The Essential Hamster," a slimmed-down but still useful version of her book "The Hamster: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet."

4-0 out of 5 stars For the little hamster lover
This is a nice book for the child hamster owner, perhaps for reading even before the pet is purchased. It does not contain all the details that a hamster owner might need, but it covers basic behavior and how to treat the pet. Cute photos, too! ... Read more

The next time you see a rat you should give it a round of applause. Consider the facts: rats can gnaw through lead, wriggle through a hole the size of a quarter, and survive high doses of nuclear radiation. Rats have also managed to exploit us humans for all we’re worth–we’ve unintentionally provided them with food, shelter, and transportation. And contrary to popular belief, rats are quite clean. Some people keep them as pets. Some even worship them.

Armed with wit and scientific fact, award-winning natural history writer Richard Conniff gleefully delves into the fascinating and impressive world of the rat–one of the most successful animals on earth.

Book Description

Award-winning illustrator Christopher Wormell brings his vivid artwork to the classic Aesop's Fables, a cornerstone of children's literature, in a visual feast to delight both children and adults. Gorgeous linoleum block prints illustrate a key moment in the story, highlighting the moral printed in Wormell's hand-cut typeface on the opposite page. Book Description

In 1946, Elizabeth Taylor -- then fourteen and a major star at MGM -- published a book about her pet chipmunk, Nibbles. With wit, charm, and remarkable skill, she related the adventures and mishaps of her high-spirited friend. She and Nibbles were virtually inseparable during the shooting of National Velvet and other films; in fact the chipmunk almost got to appear in Courage of Lassie -- but he was so well behaved that he didn't look real, and his scene was cut! Recounted here are such stories as the happiest birthday of her life, when she was given King Charles, the horse who was called The Pi in National Velvet, because only Elizabeth could ride him.

Long out of print, this enchanting memoir is available once again with Miss Taylor's original illustrations (including previously unpublished drawings from her private collection), photos of Elizabeth Taylor and Nibbles on and off the set, and a new introduction by the legendary actress. Children will love the story of a girl and her pet; older readers will appreciate the insight into young Elizabeth Taylor's life that this book provides. ... Read more
