Book Description

Sampson, George, and Rameck could easily have followed their childhood friends into drugdealing, gangs, and prison. Like their peers, they came from poor, single-parent homes in urbanneighborhoods where survival, not scholastic success, was the priority. When the three boys metin a magnet high school in Newark, they recognized each other as kindred spirits who wanted toovercome the incredible odds against them and reach for opportunity. They made a friendship pact, deciding together to take on the biggest challenge of their lives:attending college and then medical school. Along the way they made mistakes and faceddisappointments, but by working hard, finding the right mentors, separating themselves fromnegative influences, and supporting each other, they achieved their goals—and more.

In We Beat the Street, award-winning YA author and teacher Sharon Draper brings the doctors’childhood, teenage, and young-adult anecdotes vividly to life. Brief "conversations" with thedoctors at the end of each chapter provide context and advice in a friendly, nonintrusive way.Youngsters will be captivated by the men’s honest accounts of the street life that threatened to swallow them up, and how they helped each other succeed beyond their wildest expectations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring True Story
An inspiring account of three inner city boys who succeed in overcoming the odds, entering college, and fulfilling their dreams, "We Beat the Street" is a marvelous work. Written for kids, this book selects incidents from the lives of each of the three doctors in order to illustrate the great obstacles they had to surmount and the truth that street life won't pay off in the end. The reader follows Sampson, George, and Rameck as they journey from first grade through medical school, and watches them as they achieve their goals in triumph. "We Beat the Street" shows the tragedy of street life and the necessity of aid for these communities.

The content of "We Beat the Street" was skillfully edited and condensed for younger readers, making it graspable for that age level. The style was simple, but attractive, and the message was excellent. It forcefully imparted a warning, and encouraged higher education, especially for those who doubt their ability to achieve such educational goals. "Street" was quite simply one of the best books I have ever read on the subject, and deserves a wide audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolutely Fantastic Book!
This is the ultimate book for friendships. Are you a little shy when it comes to making friends? Is your best friend moving? Are you and a friend having a fight? This book as the answer to those questions and much, much more. There's a section on making friends, which includes choosing a good friend and places to meet friends. There's also a section on being a friend: when your friend moves or has a bad day, and just ways to make your friend feel better. The next section is about fighting. There are steps on what to do when you and your friend are in a fight, and even ways to decide whether or not your friendship is ending, plus ways to keep the friendship alive. Finally, there's a section on celebrating friendships-crafts, food, holding friendship parties, activities, and games. At the end of the book are pop-out friend info pages where you can glue your friend's picture. I loved reading this book, and it helped me make and keep friends. Hope you love this book as much as I do!

3-0 out of 5 stars A cute book but not very helpful...
I sort of regret buying this book because it was not very informational for me and I think it's a book intended for younger girls around the ages of 5 and up. I'm 13 and I find this book not helpful enough for teenage girls. There are problems that older kids have to tackle and there are some things in here that just won't help. It's not that easy doing the things that the book suggests. If it would offer more in-depth stuff, I would really enjoy it more.

If you want a cute book, go ahead and buy it but I would suggest you find another book if you want real good help and advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is full of great tips for friends!
The Care and Keeping of Friends is a book about how to make friends and about friends. There are many tips and activities in the book that keep you interested. I enjoyed the book very much. At the end of the book, there's few papers with blank lines for you to write about how you and your friend are alike and different. You can also paste your friend's pictures.
You should get this book if you need help with friends. There are a lot of activities that you'll enjoy and have fun. I'm sure you'll love it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I'M SMARTER NOW!
This story is about kids that have difficulties with their friends and try to get them back. The story that I'm reading doesn't have 1 character, it has
millions of them. But most of all, my favorite character is JENNA. The setting is in a house, in a car, and in a school. My story also has lots and lots of photos and
d it also has tests in it. I chose this book because it is helping me to realize about my
friendship and the problems that I have with my friends. This is a book that teaches kids
about friendship troubles and how to get your friends back. I enjoyed the part I read with
JENNA and this new girl coming to the school that JENNA went to. But I know that this
story doesn't have tragedy or anything. The author of this book I'm reading is PATTI
KELLE and the illustrator is ANGELA MARTINI. This book makes me feel better now!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Beginer Friends
My two boys love this book. Its a childs simplistic version of "How to be a Friend" and it is great. Right on their level and easy for them to relate to. The Arthur type characters are appealing to children and they make the book their choice for the evening and want me to read it again and again :) I have the hardback, it was a great find.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide for all kids.
This book is an excellent tool for parents and teachers to use with kids in the often times daunting world of social relatedness. Even kids who are very social would enjoy the way these gentle reminders are presented. Highly recommended for the special needs arena of Aspberger's and High Functioning Autism. Our autistic son loved and responded well to the almost "social story" approach. This truly spelled out a lot of social do's and don't's for him. His typical sister loved it as well. As a parent I highly recommend this book be in every kindergarden and first grade and second grade classroom. I bought several copies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Children and Adults
This is a wonderful book for explaining what a child with Autism is like and how it might effect their behavior.

The children's coloring book section is really good and perfect even for the pre-school level.

The parent section is awesome. It is a wondeful section explaining to the parent how to discuss each page with their child and gives a wonderful understanding for the parent at their level as well.

We orginally bought to give to a couple of parents in our son's play group whose children were starting to ask questions about their friend and why his behavior was different.

We are now buying for all our friends and family (even the grandparents) to have for their own.

A must have book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great first resource for children and adults
My five-year-old daughter was recently diagnosed with high functioning autism. It was no surprise to my wife and I as we had been dealing with the effects of autism for several years and had done much research on our own. The formal diagnosis made us realize it was time to try and explain to friends and relatives what autism is and why our daughter acts the way she does. This book has been extremely helpful. It was the first book we read with our eight year old who has been struggling with the fact her little sister is different. The adult section is also very well written and was also the first resource we used for grand parents and other adults in our daughters life. We plan to purchase many more copies. Thank You Beverly Bishop!

5-0 out of 5 stars HATS OFF TO THIS BOOK!
This book does a wonderful service in describing autism and its related spectrum condition, Asperger's. The gently written text; the clear explanations and the child friendly form of coloring in the pictures provides a safe ground in exploring spectrum behaviors from a child's point of view. How I wish I had owned this book when I was a child!

This is a must-have for educators, parents and persons in related fields who work with people who are on the spectrum. This book is really for everybody because it opens new doors and provides a fresh approach in discussing spectrum behaviors.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" For Every Educational Library
"My Friend with Autism" is a wonderful educational tool for teachers, peers of autistic children, and other family members. This book is highly informative, yet simple to understand, and short enough to keep the younger readers' attention. I have bought 4 of these books for my autistic son's teachers, and plan to buy more for my extended family. I will also be using this book next fall to educate my son's first grade class at the beginning of the school year.

Thank you, Ms. Bishop, for creating a brilliant tool!

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy one for every student in your child's class!
This is the best book ever for the peers of students with autism. The author recommends buying one for every student in the class, and I agree!! The teacher can easily use this book as a lesson plan for helping kids understand an autistic peer. Then, the students take it home for their parents to read, and many new doors are opened for the autistic student! This is a must read for adults and children!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Encouraging book for kids trying to do the right thing
Cliques are tough on kids. The ones in cliques feel a false sense of empowerment and the ones outside can feel isolated and powerless.

This books breaks down playground dynamics for kids so they can see the why. If they understand the why maybe recesses won't seem so discouraging.

Wonderful book for kids to read to feel strong and hopeful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
My mom bought me this book yesterday, and I thought it was so good that I finished it within 30 minutes. It really told me a lot about cliques, and friends. I've never been in one, and I wouldn't want to be in one, but I've always been excluded by them, and made fun of, so this was a great book. It told me that even though people in cliques act like they're cool, really they're just looking for a group of people to hang around with so they look tougher.

I think this is a great book for any kid/teenager who is either involved in cliques, or excluded by cliques. This is a great book for both, and a must read for anyone who has met up with cliques and phonies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Tweens/Teens and Their Parents
"Please don't let anyone get in your way!" So starts Erika V. Shearin Karres' book MEAN CHICKS, CLIQUES, AND DIRTY TRICKS. This is some of the best advice you will find, but doesn't even compare to the rest of the advice that Ms. Karres gives throughout this book.

Part of being a girl is getting used to the "in" crowd, snobs, bullies, teasing, cliques, gossip, backstabbing, and more, whether during school hours, or on your own time. It is the one thing that makes being a female extremely tough, and easily compares girls to wild animals fighting over the tiniest thing.

Split up into 10 Chapters, MEAN CHICKS breaks female predators down into various groups, and writes about each separately. Chapters on The Bully, The Snob, The Gossip, The Traitor, The Teaser, and so on, feature quotes from young girls who have been bullied in the past (this feature alone will have tweens and teens interested in this book, as they feel as if they are being spoken to by their peers, as opposed to a parent/teacher/guardian), stories about girls who have overcome bullies, quizzes, resources, and an all around survival guide to help tweens, teens, and their parents deal with the problem civilly.

As someone who has been bullied non-stop in the past, I found this book to be extremely empowering, yet uplifting at the same time. I even starting crying a few times when reading the true stories from girls who have been bullied, as I could relate to them so well. Ms. Karres' breakdown of each type of girl is entirely accurate, and will have readers nodding their head in agreement with her comments about The Bully, Traitor, and so on. Parents with a tween/teen girl who is being bullied should definitely purchase this book, as it will be a helpful guide for both YOU and your child. Don't miss MEAN CHICKS, as it is a necessity.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best
This book is really good I'm a middle-schooler and this book helps me understand why theese girls do the things they do. now i know that i can beat their tricks knowing that their doing it to be popular and i understand that theese girls are not at all perfect, in fact they have more problems then we think. now i know that i am stronger then the bully and that i can outsmart them and shrug off what they say. i love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that teaches, empowers, and heals
Once a childhood bully and a teenager who was bullied, I found an immediate and deep connection with Karres's book. What I thought most poignant was the psychology detailed behind each description of the girl(s) dreaded in school - the Bully, the Gossip, and so on. She makes you understand the reasons underlying the otherwise callous actions that girls exhibit...almost to the point of making one feel a certain sympathy for them. That being said, this book is also a useful - and not an overbearing, finger-pointing - tool for the girls who exhibit these types of mean behavior. Karres possesses a compassion for young women that is clearly evident throughout her verbiage. Through that, you get the feeling, once the final page is read, that somehow, someday, 'everything is going to be okay.' This book is not only valuable for girls, but a highly educational reminder to parents of what their child is going through. I know that if I ever have a daughter one day, the book is going to be left in her hands.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Helping Me Alot
My Mom gave me this book to read because I have had alot of problems as a teenager just dealing with all the social drama and fighting that goes on. Every week there are fights and disagreements and I find so many girls can be cruel and get jealous and hurt each other. I really like this book and it is helping me. I feel like I'm reading about my own friends and the kids in my school with different names. Dr. Karres also explains why girls act the way they do and gives good ideas for how to act and what to say when kids act out and get really mean or think they are better than anyone else. I tried a few ideas in this book and they really work! I am also learning more about why I act they way I do sometimes and get in sad or down moods because of all the things that go on with kids around me. I think this is a very good book and everyone should read it. I wish they would teach kids this stuff in school so there wouldn't be so many problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book- I Use It With My Students!!!
I teach in a middle school and was lucky to read Mean Chicks, Cliques, and Dirty Tricks -- I am using the many terrific tips to help guide students who are often very upset about the difficult and upsetting social episodes they encounter -- and Dr. Karres' explanations, approaches, and advice in this book are exceptional!! The book includes writings from girls in need of real-life down-to-earth objective and educated help for tough situations in dealings with peers ( who can be nasty and hurtful)
and they are answered so beautifully, with both logic and sensitivity. I've covered some of the excellent empowerment tips with my students and they love them!! This book is an esteem-builder and empowerment bible for girls from elementary through high school (probably even adults!!) and parents, too, can learn alot here for assisting their children through the social rocky roads of the girls' world. Tips on dealing with all personality types, behaviors, and issues --from bullies and teasers to groupies and newcomers on the block -- being in good moods and bad moods -- are included PLUS the book has a section called "Cool Tools" listing additional resources. This is great for teaching girls they can own their power and do have choices to attain further support; they are not alone and can learn how to cope with and overcome tough people and relationships! I invite my students to look at my copy of the book ( I keep it on my desk) and they rush up to grab it! This book is a double winner. ... Read more

My Friend Isabelle is a wonderful little book that teaches about difference and acceptance with simplicity and grace. Isabelle and Charlie are friends. They are the same age, but like most friends, they are different: Charlie is tall and knows "a lot of words," and Isabelle is short and sometimes her words are, "hard to understand." The sweet simplicity of their relationship is a reminder to everyone that "differences are what make the world so great." 4-0 out of 5 stars Love and Friendship
Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul on Love and Friendship a great book for teenagers, because it is real life stories written by teens all over the U.S. The stories in this book are about relationships and dating, and friendships. Most of the stories in this book are very happy and give the reader tips about relationships with people, but there are also a few stories written by heart broken teens.
Every story in this book can help someone in some way because they either have a lesson to be learned or they are just great stories to read so maybe someday you can be like one of the teenagers in this book.
This is a book that can be read again and again by adults as well as teens of course, because many adults face some of the same problems as teens face when it comes to relationships. When ever you get a chance to read this book take it. Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul on Love and Friendshipis a book that you will not regret reading because this is such an awesome book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best yet
After reading Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul on Love and Friendship I realized how terrible things can be. It also shows you how to make the best of things that you think are the worst. I never thought that Chicken Soup books were for me until I read this one.
You can make life into whatever you want it to be. You shouldnt let guys or friends step in your way. This Cihcken Soup teaches you about all the problems and situations you come across with guys and friends. If either your firend or your boyfriend tried to step in your way of accomplishing something they dont really care because friends and boyfriends dont do that. So if your interested in love, relationships, and friendships then this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars What the Teen Love Series should be
If you like Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul then you'll absolutely love this book! This is what the Teen Love Series on Relationships shoudl've been.

The book has stories written by teens as usual but it's a lot better than listening to the author ask questions all the time. Sorry to say but me being a teen, I don't learn from being lectured to all day, I learn from experience and this book details on others experiences that teaches me more than if my mom or dad were to sit down and lecture me on all of it.

It's very good and it takes after the Chicken Soup for the Soul books rather than the Teen Love series which I feel is much better. That means we get more mature stories written by older teens as well as younger so it's a great read for teenagers of all ages. Not just teens, but adults as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure excellence
This is an excellent book. It is so informative of real teenage problems on love and friendship. It has helped me to understand that I am not the only girl who has to deal with bad relationships between friends and boyfriends. And you can tell this is a good book because I love to shop and when I went to the mall I baught a book (this book) which I NEVER do, but I just wanted it that bad. This truly is a great book and every parent who has a teenage daughter just has to buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Chicken Soup is the best!
This book was awesome. I love reading stories written by teens, especially true stories. I would definately recommend this book to anyone who loves to read and is just looking for a good book, or even someone who dislikes reading and just wants to read the romance stories. 3-0 out of 5 stars It needed more "meat" but...
it was highly entertaining and quite nostalgic. Most of us can smile as we look back through the timeline of the industry "self-improvement." This book is rather tongue-in-cheek, but what remains true is that we indeed ARE a nation of people who have believed in and practiced self-improvement of all kinds.

That spirit of "can-do" is uniquely American and timeless in its application. Those who wrote the sort of books Ms. Trontz includes in this book knew that if the average person had a road map and some inspiration to go along with it, they could accomplish incredible things.

We may well laugh a little today when we see the old advertisements which said happiness is just a smile away, or a good shoe shine will give you confidence, or you can think your way to riches, but that doesn't diminish the fundamental, underlying truth that we humans are choice makers and as such we can determine our destinies to a great degree. How we think ultimately determines the type of life we will experience.

I would have liked more text from the books Ms. Trontz included in, "Yes, You Can!", but all in all it is a pretty entertaining walk down memory lane. The illustrations are great.

Book Description

For Fernie and his best friend, the fun begins when they are babies who crawl across the lawn towards each other, away from their parents' watchful eyes. And once they find each other, they are inseparable.

Together, they grow to be the self-proclaimed artistic geniuses and master athletes of their school. But they do admit to being losers at spelling bees and camping out. And when it comes to romance, well, if waltzing with a broom in the kitchen or sporting glowing orange socks to a school dance counts, these guys are cool.

Gary Soto's original poems and Regan Dunnick's clever illustrations will spark recognition in all middle-schoolers who've gone through the humiliation of sports try-outs and first dances; who've had to deal with body images and swinging moods. Each of the poems in this book shows a scene from their sometimes difficult, sometimes comical lives growing up together as best friends. Even though they don't have everything in common, they both know that at least they're in it together.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Major Breakthrough for Developing Relationships
This book allows for sameness as well as differences, making it possible for people of all ages to remember that uniquenesses are common from person to person. An approach like the ones suggested in the book, will in itself explain the racial and physical differences which are destroying the nation. Acceptance of the fact that we are all the same and yet different is a concept that could be taught to all adults who harbor prejudices around the world. This book is said to be developed for ages 3-8, but the concepts as presented are to be lauded for their simplicity and authentic reality. The activities are well thought out, and this book is a blessing to the educator, as well as, the child who is fortunate enough to have a benefactor who truly cares. ... Read more
