Daisy the endearing duckling shows preschoolers the way to bounce up anddown, hop like rabbits, and pounce like kittens "so early in the morning" inJane Simmons's adorable little board book. Pictorial tabs help youngsters gostraight to their favorite parts of the classic song, "Here We Go 'Round theMulberry Bush." A frog squats placidly on one tab, while inside he and Daisyleap wildly, and on the "flap our wings" page, a bumblebee flitter-flutters itswings alongside the energetic yellow duck. Vibrant, warm colors suffuse thepages, and each fluffy or fluttery or splashy critter invites readers to linger(or hop) a while. The many devotees of Simmons's other Daisy titles--Come Along, Daisy!, Daisy's Hide-and-Seek,Daisy Says "If You're Happy and YouKnow It", etc.--will be charmed anew by the earnest ducky. 5-0 out of 5 stars My 4 year old's favorite book
This is my 4-year-old's favorite book. He's heard it so many times, he can repeat the entire story verbatim (in prose and in song form). The words are very large - useful for this beginning reading - and the rhyming form is easy for him to master. The illustrations are wonderful and the story is a lot of fun. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Child's Bedtime Story
My three year old grandaughter loved this book. She refers to it all the time. "I'm the boss and I say floss!" The Llamas in their pajamas were so cute, and it is a real imagination pleaser. Great illustrations! Fun book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The illustrious Mister Kellogg has done it again!
The moose character is a totally new addition for Mr. Kellogg's repertoire, and he is quite the funny looking fellow.

A sure tonic for any parent or grandparent that reads to their children or grandchildren. As entertaining for adults to read as for the young ones it is created for. His illustrations are charming & funny. A real treat! I highly recommend this author/illustrator. If you like this book, look for any of the Pinkerton series, a "sell out" at all the public libraries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Bedtime reading!
My five year old daughter loves this book! It really has nothing to do with hunting and everything to do with getting ready for bed. The rhymes are fun and catchy. One of the better children's books we've read recently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful bedtime story with beautiful illustrations!
Steven Kellogg does it again. This is a warm story of a boy and girl who are reluctant to go to bed. All the illustrations are beautiful and full of rich details. A warm, family ending that would make any child feel safe and comfortable to head off to bed. ... Read more

New Yorker cartoonist (and creator of the altogether ookyAddams Family characters) Charles Addams tampers with tradition to greateffect in The Charles Addams Mother Goose, first published in 1967, andnow reissued as a deluxe edition. While Ms. Goose's original nursery rhymesremain unchanged, Addams casts his spell on a selected few poems with new visualtwists. A less wholesome, more anemic Mistress Mary has never been seen, and herbare-lightbulb-lit basement garden of mushrooms and heads of "pretty maids allin a row" is quite unsettling. Jack Sprat and his wife are, of course, cannibals. Nine-day-old porridge is disgusting... so naturally a witch is theporridge preparer, and goblins are the only ones who would like it "nine daysold." Humpty Dumpty's story, on the other hand, feels a little cheerier than theoriginal: rather than leaving the egg irreparably broken, the illustrator showsa dinosaur hatching! Tee Addams, Charles Addams's wife, writes an insightfulintroduction for this lovely, oversized edition, and the book closes with ascrapbook of family photos and pictures of Addams's earlier work. Kids familiarwith Mother Goose's rhymes will be delighted (and perhaps only slightlyterrified) by Addams's playful interpretations. (All ages) --KarinSnelson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Childhood Found!
I was so pleased to find a re-print of this, the Mother Goose of my childhood. Yep, my parents gave me this Charles Addams -- and I've never been quite right since.
The hours I spent poring over pictures of the cadaverous Wee Willie Winkie, the Frankenstein-esque Dr. Fell, and little Wednesday Addams skipping rope alone, under a single streetlight . . . all these wonderful frissons were restored to me with this re-issue. Mother Goose wears Chuck Taylors!
If you love Gorey, Burton, and Lynch, you'll love the "Charles Addams Mother Goose."

5-0 out of 5 stars Creepy Fun for Kids of All Ages
Addams' wit, even more than his illustrations, makes this book a five-star classic. It isn't hard to imagine a macabre picture accompanying "Three Blind Mice," but Addams goes further than the typical fare by including Grant Wood's "American Gothic" couple (as the farmer and his wife) and giving Mrs. Farmer an electric carving knife to de-tail the mice. Casting a mobster and beatnik as the "rat" and "cat" in the "House that Jack Built" poem is another master stroke. ...and just what have Mr. Sprat and his wife eaten?

My favorite illustration accompanies "Fishy, fishy in the brook/Daddy catch him on a hook...." Could anyone but Addams create a "Daddy" with a Capt. Hook-style prosthetic at the end of his arm? Classic. ("Little Miss Muffet" runs a close second to this poem and illustration.)

The "scrapbook" is a nice addition at the end of the book, but it doesn't quite live up to the blurb on the front of the dust jacket.

The only drawback to the book is that when the picture spans two pages so much of the illustration gets sucked into the binding. This most noticably detracts from poems like "The Old Woman Who Lived Under a Hill" and "St. Dunstan," where the heart of the illustration takes place in the center of the image.

All in all, a great book; even the minor detractions serve to make you want more of Addams delightfully twisted artwork.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ghoulishly delightful vision for grownups
This book contains only a couple dozen of the best rhymes. No illustration is smaller than a single page, and many cover two. The paper cover's artwork is also printed directly on the hard board binding, so the paper cover can be torn or discarded with no real loss. It is about 9"x11" in size. I read this last night and repeatedly laughed out loud at the bizarre and darkly humorous renditions of my childhood favorites. Characters from his signature "Addams Family" cartoons can be identified in some. One of my favorite drawings accompanies wee-willie-winkie. Compare Addams vision of a demented and ghoulish peeping-tom to the sweet night-watchman of Richardson in the Volland edition. I seriously question whether or not this material is even appropriate for children age 4-8 (as suggested above). However, it seems to me eminently suitable for adults with a love of Mother Goose or Charles Addams, or both.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful spoof on the original Mother Goose
This gorgeous rediscovered treasure is a wonderful spoof on the original Mother Goose, lending a macabre feel to the classic warm rhymes. Black and white illustrations as well as color drawings provide quite a different interpretation of the rhymes ' youngsters with some maturity familiar with the old favorites will find this a treasure ' as will their parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the young-at-heart !
I highly recommend this book for those of us who enjoy children's stories. Although it may be a bit too dark for children, it is perfect for "old" kids who have a twisted sense of humor! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL book!
My daughter craved stimulation as an infant. She loved simple finger play games such as pat-a-cake, but I couldn't remember the words or hand motions to many others (how DO you get from a steeple to a church full of people?). When I went to our local bookstore in search of a book on finger play rhymes and directions, the clerk couldn't praise this book enough. Joanna Cole's books are EXTREMELY easy to understand, with step by step caricatures picturing hand placement and motion. My now three year old daughter enjoys looking through the book as well as singing the songs. This book comes highly recommended. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Illustrations could be MUCH better!
This book doesn't do justice to this old classic rhyme! Neither my 5 month old son nor I liked it! The illustrations are pretty bad! There's no contrast in the colors presented and the pictures are pretty dull & unrealistic overall!

5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly The most Beautiful Lyrics Ever Written
Joni Mitchell, feminine/insightful social voice and poet extrodinaire.

This book is yet another example of her gift for words, through simple yet deeply profound lyric she says more, expresses more, shows more than others who toil for months even years to write a Children's book and still don't measure up to her talent. (When you got it you got it)

The illustrations depicting a caterpillar's metamorphosis is appropriate with it's metaphysical imagery. Illustrator Allan Baker captures the magic of these classic lyrics beautifully.

Why not for children? Life & Love & all of the above, as a critic I argue that children are multi-dimentional and capable of appreciating the spontaneity & playful rhymes that make this book a welcome addition to any child's (or adult for that matter) home library.

"Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air and feathered canyons everywhere, I've looked at clouds that way."

This book is a visual treat and a treasure for any fan of Ms. Mitchell. If you haven't come to appreciate her songs/writing, get this book and see why her style has been refered to as "A Lyrical Miracle!" Finally a kid's title with substance.

5-0 out of 5 stars If All the Books Were This Good....
What a pleasure to see a children's book WITHOUT mass produced Disney characters, computer generated images, or a television show to promote.`If All the Seas Were One Sea,' a Newbury Honor book first published in 1971, still looks great over 30 years later. With simple, yet imaginative images, Janina Domanska creates a world of speculation and wonder in which to encase this nursery rhyme. For a children's book, `If All the Seas' asks many philosophical questions.Even if only for a few minutes, the book will force children to stop and think about its implications. It might cause a few adults to do the same. And that can't be a bad thing.

Duckling Daisy knows the secret to true happiness: "If you're happy andyou know it, oink like a pig" (or buzz like a bee, squeak like a mouse, or evenquack like a duck!). Most preschoolers know the secret, too. And so they willadore Jane Simmons's board book version of one of their favorite songs: "IfYou're Happy and You Know It." Little yellow Daisy, with her lightheartedexpression and big orange feet, brings an automatic smile to every face, evenbefore she starts in on the barnyard noises. Pictorial tabs allow readers tofind their favorite verse of the song, be it the baaa-ing sheep, the cheepingchick, or the sleeping Daisy. Then they will join in the singing, and perhapseven learn a thing or two about reading along the way. Lush, lovableillustrations make this a book no card-carrying preschooler will be able toresist. 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
These books are a pleasure to read and to look at !

This series of books are the favourite with my 9 month old daughter and me ! We have been enjoying these books for about four months now. I even recite them to my little girl when we are out walking to squeals of delight.

I have borrowed a lot of books from the library, so you could say I have done a lot of "road testing". I find the Daisy series to be in a different league to everything else. The illustrations in the Daisy series are delightful and the words are like poetry.

4-0 out of 5 stars Encourages participation from kids
This board book is of course fun to read to babies, but it would also be great for anyone reading to one toddler or preschooler, or a class of youngsters: Daisy the duck encourages the listener (if he or she is happy, that is) to make various sounds (like "quack like a duck") as we visit all kinds of different animals throughout the book. An added feature which kids and parents/teachers will like is the variety of "tabs" at the side of the book - on the tabs are pictures of an animal so the child can easily flip to the page that has that particular animal on it. The ending encourages happy kids to do something that will calm kids down and prepare them for either listening to another story, or a nap. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
I picked this book up for my nephew's birthday because I remember loving the story of the little old lady who swallowed a fly when i was a kid. I was in a hurry at the store, so I just grabbed it off the shelf and went on my way.

When I got it home and finally had time to look through the book, I was amazed at how fantastic the illustrations are! I read the book and realized all over again what a great story this is. I know my nephew will love it too.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Old Favorite
My aunt used to sing this to me when I was little. I always got such a kick out of the song. Now I enjoy sharing it with my son.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny...
An enjoyable book to read and enjoy with your child. I don't think you can get through this book without singing the words and lots of giggles.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Know an Old Lady
This was my favorite book when I was younger. 'I know and old Lady' is a very good book. It tells about how and old lady swallows a fly. After that she swallows a spider to catch the fly. Then she swallows a bird to catch the spider, she swallows a cat to catch the bird, she swallows a dog to catch the cat, and she swallows a goat to catch the dog. She swallows a cow to catch the goat and then she swallows a horse to catch the cow. This is a very good and funny book. In the back of this book it even has a song that can go along with the book. The song has a very cute tune to go with the story and children will enjoy singing it. When I read this book the first time I remember that I really enjoyed it and I wanted to read it over and over again. I would recommend this book for children of any age. They can also sing along with the song. I would suggest that you read this book because I really enjoyed it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a very fun read
This book is great. I have another version of this story and this one is by far the better of the two. The pictures are full of detail that add so much to the silly little song that so many of us know and love. This story includes the whole song for the story instead of just a part of it as some books do. The pictures add so much by showing the old lady chasing and catching the animals. It's all done in such a silly way as to not scare a child but just to make them laugh. I think most children would really like this book. ... Read more
