Nine, ten, big fat hen!” “Baker uses an imaginative array of acrylic colors for his hens--greens, purples, and pinks to contrast with the warm, yellow straw background. There are lots of things to count, such as sticks, eggs, chicks, and hens. A fine choice for toddler story hours.”--School Library Journal

5-0 out of 5 stars What a find!
I bought this book sight unseen and absolutely love it. I'm a kinder teacher always on the prowl for books with folk stories and nursery rhymes. Big Fat hen is... 1,2 Buckle My Shoe. The illustrations are fabulous and the kids, love the rhyming. It's a popular pick in my classroom!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is a great first book for a child, lots of counting and things to see in the pictures if you are really paying attention. Your toddler/preschooler will love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars My 2 year old daughter loves this book.
There are ample pictures to count on each page that match the numbers on the page. The illustrations are gorgeous and she always claps when the chicks hatch. We read it every night.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our four month old grandson is fascinated with this book!
Our grandson loves this book and learned to turn the pages at four months. The coloring and graphics appeal to him. Another grandmother gave it to us and she was right on target. It is the only book we've found that holds his interest and that he doesn't chew instead of read. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mother Goose Math
Mother Goose Math is a collection of Mother Goose nursery rhymes that deal with simple math concepts such as counting. Some of the rhymes are familiar ones like one, two, buckle my shoe and sing a song of sixpence. There were several rhymes that I was not familiar with. The book has bright, colorful illustrations with each rhyme that grab children's attention. Some of the illustrations have borders around them which make these illustrations busy. The rhymes run together page after page with no clear ending or beginning. My children who are 3 and 6 enjoyed the book. I think this book might be too young for children over 6. I would recommend reading this book to children ages 2-5. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars RIDICULOUS, REMARKABLE RHYMES
Youngsters usually love the sounds of rhymes. They're intrigued by words that sound alike. And, Jane Yolen seems to have a built in radar for detecting what children will enjoy. She's right on target with "Animal Fare."

Vividly illustrated by Janet Street, this slim volume of poetry features a lilting collection of imaginary animals such as "The Bumple Bee," who is also very messy, and "The Sprinkler Spaniel" who shakes his soggy head and makes soggy tracks.

It's all in good fun as youngsters will be the first to recognize. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Their choice
Let's face it--sometimes we don't know why a particular book is a kid's favorite. That's the case with this book. I would never have guessed it was to become the all-time-favorite book of both my children (1 and 3). They just love it!

4-0 out of 5 stars You Know the Tunes - - Now Here's the Words!
This is quite a mom & dad's helper... you know the tunes but can't remember the verses to "Wheels On The Bus". This is a word book, it doesn't contain the music notes, but they really aren't needed. They are presented with one beautiful color illustration per song with easy-to-read text. Some words are a bit different than I recall (Is it eensy weensy spider or itsy bitsy spider?) but that may just be a regional thing. It is a good parent/child interactive book.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Daughter's FAVORITE book!!!
"My First Songs" by Jane Manning is Haley's favorite book at the moment. It has to be read (sung) to her by Daddy every night. And she refuses to go to bed until she's heard it. This book is excellent for those parents (like me) who have forgotten all the songs they grew up with. The illustrations are bright and colorful and hold a 16 month old's attention night after night. We've recommended "My First Songs" to all of our friends with small children, and we recommend it to YOU too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stands on its own, even when not compared to Mother Goose
My son loves this book and seemed unimpressed with the original Mother Goose when they were read to him weeks after getting this book. This book is much more entertaining for any age at any time. Warm, positive, and funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful update of familiar nursery rhymes
After our son was born we started really reading the old nursery rhymes we'd grown up with and were disappointed by the often harsh and callous messages. The New Adventures of Mother Goose is such a welcome relief! It full of the characters we recognize but they're so much happier than we remember them. For instance, the three KIND mice take out their cheese and cut her (the farmer's wife) a slice. How much better than getting their tails chopped off! Most importantly, it's our son's favorite book and he's starting to complete the rhymes himself. We feel good about having him repeat happy rhymes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Educator Favorite!
In this sweetly appealing book, Kay Charao has collected and illustrated classic nursery rhymes, songs, quotes and poems all centered around the theme of baby animals.

We begin with William Shakespeare, "A star danced/ and under that/ was I born" and end with "I see the moon/ And the moon sees me;/ God bless the moon,/ And God bless me."

In between Charao has included a delightful mix of well-known favorites such as the "Three Little Kittens" and some not-so-well-known but equally appealing texts such as Alfred, Lord Tennyson's "Cradle Song."

The illustrations are done in colored pencil and watercolors. Kittens, piglets, bears, bunnies, mice, birds, and more bound across double-page spreads. Each captures perfectly the text and are chock-full of small details that readers and listeners will want to linger over.

This delightful book is a true visual and verbal celebration. Classroom uses are many: storytelling, one-on-one reading, phonemic awareness, theme material, visual literacy, and more. Don't miss this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars my daughter loves this book
I ordered this book for my 7 and a half month old daughter for Christmas and she loves it. I read to my daughter several times a day, before each nap and bedtime. She always gets excited when I bring out this book. She loves touching the cutouts of the stars. This book is one of the books I always go to when she doesn't seem interested in reading that day. She can be squirming in my lap and will stop when I bring out this book. It only takes opening to the first page for her to become immediately entranced in this book. It seems to be perfect for her age group....it's quick so she doesn't get bored and there's not so much writing that it goes over her head like some other books do. I have ordered some more books by this author and I'm excited to see if they are as good as this one. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

Young children have long loved "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," the irresistible story of a little girl who audaciously trespasses on the property of a family of bears. In The Three Bears Rhyme Book, Jane Yolen takes a closer look at the bears, from their breakfast porridge (with Goldilocks peeking in the window) to a garden visit, a walk in the rain, naptime, and other adventures that lead to bath, books, and bedtime. Preschoolers just might notice the similarities between Baby Bear's life and their own! Jane Dyer's engaging full-page illustrations in colored pencil and watercolor make The Three Bears Rhyme Book a delightful read-aloud experience. Don't be surprised if you share this book with your child and hear "Read it again!" as you turn the last page. (Ages 2 to 6) ... Read more

The more my daughter and I read this book, the more we liked it! Jane Dyer's illustrations are beautifully detailed--who would have imagined the bears living in such an ornate little house! Apparently Goldi and the bears have become friends because they share photographs, go to each other's parties, and compare gardens.Children can relate to baby bear's feelings that he is "Too Old for Naps," his fears "In the Night," and his opinion that Daddy's lap makes the best chair at all. This is a wonderful book to read aloud to your child at bedtime--or anytime. ...
