5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great teaching tool
This is a terriffic book for use in the music classroom, and at home. As a book that can be either sung or read, it is versatile. It's large size and colorful illustrations draw kids attention. I have personally found it to be very effective with my kindergarten through third grade students. I highly reccommend it to anyone looking for a good book for younger kids that can be sung or read! I highly suggest Pam Adams books.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 2-year-year old learned how to count to 10 reading this!
My 2-year-old loves to sing the song along with me, and loves to hold this sturdy book. The illustrations are eye-catching and hold his interest until we finish the song. The rhythm of the tune helped him learn more complex word patters like "came rolling home." It is printed in bright colors, on thick paper, and can withstand some toddler handling. This book is similar to the other books illustrating children's folk tunes, but this is by far my son's favorite! ... Read more

A reader from Sacramento, CA USA
My daughter loves it and found it the next best thing to Barney. We just put her down for the night and she went to sleep willingly and easily after our 5th reading. I like reading it to her because of the colorful artwork and because it reminds me of our last trip to Hawaii

5-0 out of 5 stars Its da bes'!
This is a very amusing book sent to us by friends in Hawaii. The new words to old favorites are easy to remember. It is a great way to introduce children to common Hawaiian words and elements of Hawaiian culture. The illustrations are well done and colorful. "Go Go Gecko" and "Three Big Pigs" are our favorites. Don't be surprised if your children want Tutus and slippers! I would definitely consider giving Hawaiian Style Mother Goose to friends, especially those with a Hawaiian connection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet and endearing
Since my infant twins are Cuban-American, I have been looking for children's books that will teach them Spanish while also teaching them a bit of their heritage. This collection of Latin American nursery rhymes brings together a collection of sweet rhymes that also appear in English. I'm always interested to see how the translator of this work chose to translate the rhymes. Often, the translations are not word for word, so sometimes I feel like I am reading a new rhyme. The adaptations are as interesting as the original ones. The illustrations are as pretty as the rhymes. I will save this book for my twins to give to their children one day. ... Read more

Ashley Bryan's ABC of African American Poetry is not an alphabet book. Award-winning children's book author and former teacher Ashley Bryan has simply hit upon a straightforward way to present the work of his favorite African American poets: he uses a letter of each poem to organize the 25 excerpts and one African American spiritual. His vibrant artwork, with bold strokes of paint reminiscent of Vincent van Gogh, successfully captures the essence of each piece."As I read," Bryan writes, "images sprang from the lines of the poets... Finally, I chose the sketches that offered a balanced play of images and did finished paintings from them in tempera paints and gouache colors."

Poems ranging from the intense to the whimsical reflect the diverse voices of poets such as Rita Dove, Lucille Clifton, and Gwendolyn Brooks. A colorful elephant stands solidly next to Countee Cullen's poem: "Dear Noah: Please save me a spot / Exposed to the sun, where the Mice are not; / But if I must share my chamber, the Ant / Is the one I should welcome. Yours: L. E. Phant." From Langston Hughes we hear, "There are words like Freedom / Sweet and wonderful to say. / On my heart-strings freedom sings / All day everyday." And Eloise Greenfield chimes in with "Harriet Tubman didn't take no stuff / Wasn't scared of nothing neither / Didn't come in this world to be no slave / And wasn't going to stay one neither." This innovative, easy-to-absorb, boldly illustrated introduction to a rich variety of African American poets would be a valuable addition to any child's bookshelf. (All ages) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, breath-taking
The illustrations in this book are so beautiful, words can not explain. It is a simple read that introduces the little ones to poetry. Most poems are excerpts of a stanza or a few lines and the picture corresponds to the poem. Each poem either starts with the letter of the letter is bold in the poem and ties in the picture. For example, F=freedom, but the poem's first letter is not F, so F is bold in the word freedom. Highly recommended for the entire family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Images!
We love this book and are purchasing a second copy so we can cut out the images and frame them. Ashley Bryan is a master of art! Book Description

The owl and pussycat have gone to sea often in the past 100 years, but never in a boat so green, on a sea so blue, into horizons and lands so glowing with color. Artist Erica Rutherford has created beautiful silk-screened images of Edward Lear’s much loved fantasy poem of two unlikely companions and a spare little boat. First published 150 years ago, “The Owl and the Pussycat” is impossible, nonsensical, whimsical, and it is in those very elements that its appeal lies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the best
I have always loved this rhyme, and when I found a version illustrated by Jan Brett, I knew that for me this would be the definitive version. Jan Brett's illustrations bring the Caribbean Islands to life right in front of your eyes. The cat with her headscarf, the beautiful tropical fish in the borders, the lush vegetation, this is so richly illustrated that you can look at the pages over and over again. And if you tire of the Owl and the Pussycat, there's always the story told in the borders to provide a change.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hand in hand, on the edge of the sand....
Spectacularly beautiful illustrations make this book a joy. The familiar poem has a gently rocking rhythm, and the pictures have a flow of their own. My 18-month-old daughter likes to find the flower, the yellow fish, the cat and the owl on each page. The quiet familiarity of the poem calms her down during the nighttime crazies (that spurt of energy toddlers get just before they collapse into a puddle). I recommend this book for a soothing, visually delightful experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Illustrations
My daughter loves this book and I don't mind reading it over and over again thanks to the beautiful illustrations. I always notice something new and wonderful and what a fantastic idea for a setting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful But Ridiculous
As I'm sure you know, owls and cats don't make fast friends (something that makes the Hopperoo a lover of the owl). And that's what makes this book so ridiculous. Of course, it is a fairy tale and the illustrations are beautiful.

On the other hand, I once took my ailurophilic spouse Bessie on a camping trip to one of those cat-ridden ghost towns in New Mexico (Winston) and the interaction between owl and kitty cat was not quite as Lear describes in his charming book--imagine an entire evening interupted by the continual caterwauls of nature's inferior puddy tat. I only wish Bobo (her annoying tabby) had been along for the ride!!! Recommended, but not as enjoyable as the Winston Owlprey Symphony Orchestra.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book with depth!
This is one of my favorite all-time books. I have always loved the story. My mother recited it so often that it was one of the first things I memorized. It's whimsical, sweet and has interesting characters and locations. When I found this edition with Jan Brett's illustrations, I was captivated. I have read it to my four children over and over again, and I always find a new detail that I missed before. Wonderful book!!! ... Read more

Book Description

Since this nursery rhyme first appeared in 1830, children have loved it. When Tomie dePaola discovered that Hale had been born near his New Hampshire home, he knew he wanted to illustrate this perennial favorite.

DePaola uses his signature folk art style and sets the poem in a tradi- tional 19th century New England setting. The result is an endearing interpretation of the little lamb that followed Mary to school and how the teacher handled it.

Back in print after fifteen years and in a board book format for the first time, Mary Had a Little Lamb will be cherished for generations of children to come. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A different view of a classic rhyme...
This version of 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' is carefully and thoughtfully photo-illustrated by Bruce McMillan. The book's self-proclaimed purpose is to interpret 'a traditional verse in a contemporary manner'. McMillan therefore uses as his model for Mary an African-American first-grader whose loving lamb follows her to school. Special techniques were used to allow her glasses to be included in the illustrations, a rare depiction in children's books. The setting is much more traditional, including a schoolhouse with a bell and a Border Chaviot lamb who is captured well by McMillan's lens. A note at the end of the book gives a history of the poem, its original form, and it's use in early reading textbooks. McMillan uses colour and contrasts to draw the reader's eye. All in all, children should readily identify with this modern update, and it would be very useful when putting together a multicultural collection. Furthermore, the version I have is 9 by 10 inches, a good size for those sharing stories with several children at once. This could be a very special book for a child, for a storytime, or for a library collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Artistic Masterpiece
Our daughter keeps asking to read this classic poem/song again and again. Mayor's illustrations are a masterpiece of three-dimensional textile work, combining many different techniques. She has also captured many historical details of the era in which the poem was originally written. The result adds depth and detail to a simple story, which makes it a pleasure to read again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Visual new take on classic poem

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Babies, Kids and Adults to Share!
We love this book! I hope it never ever goes out of print. We started reading it with our son when he was about 11 months old. He loved the rhythms and we all loved the illustrations. It is beautiful to look at while you read. Now our son is almost two and I find that this book just gets better and better for us to read. We all have it memorized (my son chimes in at the end of each line). We are trying to teach him to count and he loves animals, both of which are so wonderfully illustated by Keats. A true classic! A "must have" for kids! I am buying it now for a friend who is pregnant and, like me, loves nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful illustrations reinvigorate the rhyme
"Hey Diddle Diddle" reprints the familiar nursery rhyme with illustrations by Jeanette Winter. The artist brings new life to this rhyme with her whimsical, quirky creations. She makes very effective use of pastel colors set against a star-spangled, dark night sky. Her artwork is full of fun and imaginative touches, such as the lavender pinstripes on the cat's trousers. Winter has visualized a surreal fantasy landscape that is cheery and inviting, and populated with friendly-looking characters.

2-0 out of 5 stars Why is Disney Here?
There are pluses and minuses to this edition of traditional rhymes, but mostly minuses. The pluses are that the drawings are indeed very engaging for the baby/toddler age group that the book is meant for. Also, the rhymes selected are of good quality and, as another reviewer wrote, free of some of the darker ones you find in older collections.

That being said, why is Disney here? Disney did not invent or originally draw the Hundred Acre Woods characters, nor did it have a hand in the nursery rhymes. The original drawings by A.A. Milne had greater depth (mostly appreciated by the adult reader, but who knows?) and Disney's tendency to introduce itself and it's products everywhere has become annoying. This would be find if these products didn't carry it's strange social agenda with it (page nine finds Pooh guarding his house with *a gun*, albeit a pop-gun, but a gun nontheless. What could be more anti-Pooh?).

Lastly, the title is somewhat misleading--the rhymes are not "of" Winne the Pooh (although there are lyrics aplenty in Milne's original) but tradition ones.

In sum, this collection's presentation detracts from Milne, yet does a satisfactory job of selecting poems. Two stars for that (selecting poems is the easier half of the job).

5-0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Disney Press
I could not be more pleased with the content and illustrations in this book. Classic nursery rhymes with pictures of Pooh and the whole gang. Many fun and educational pictures to go along with rhymes like " Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes ". This book leaves out some of the de-moralizing stories you might find in other books that just seem out of date and leaves in great coordination games and encouraging rhymes. I would definitley reccomend this book to any parent or grandparent. Five stars just are not enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable illustrations of Pooh and friends add to rhymes
The illustrations of Winnie the Pooh and his friends work beautifully with the nursery rhymes that we have grown up with and cherish.

I agree that if you're not going to do the classic nursery rhymes, then skip this one as well. But if you are going to do classic nursery rhymes, this one is it. When reading these to my daughter I do sometimes alter the wording so they aren't as harsh, but I would do that with any collection of nursery rhymes. This nursery rhyme book has all the classic nursery rhymes (Jack and Jill, Humpty Dumpty) but also includes many wonderful additional rhymes that I had never heard. If you have a problem with the material discussed in nursery rhymes, don't get this or any other nursery rhyme book. But, if your children enjoy rhyming verses and colorful illustrations this is a wonderful book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Gross!
Perhaps many decades ago these horrible and dark nursery rhymes were somehow considered "good". I found this book to be dark, and completely unsuitable for the small innocent minds of children. I will never introduce this book to my child. It talks of death, starvation, abandonment and gruesome acts on animals.

I just don't relate to the concept of putting these types of images into a young mind.

If you want dark and cold, this is your book. If you want fun and light hearted nursery rhymes, look elsewhere...

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Mother Goose for children from birth through age tw
Of all the Mother Goose collections available, this is the absolute best for children between birth and age two. The brilliant colors and strong black holding line immediately and completely captivates tiny ones. The easy layout insures accessibility to each rhyme and its simplicity does a beautiful job jogging addled adult memories, easing recall and assisting memorization. Don't miss it! ... Read more

Book Description

For generations, the songs and rhymes of American folk culture have delighted little ones and connected adult and child. These treasures were once passed on from parent or grandparent to child, but are now in danger of being lost and forgotten with changes in technology and family structure. This series helps to develop a young child's imagination and musical sensibilities, as well as create an intimate quiet time between parent and child.

Here is the text and musical notation of 88 toe-wiggling and tummy-tickling songs and rhymes for adults to share with children, such as "This Little Piggy" and "These Are Baby's Fingers." Once there were many rhymes that evoked make-believe situations while wiggling baby's fingers and toes. Unfortunately, few are recalled today. Other rhymes that involved drawing a circle in a baby's palm or on a baby's tummy and then ending with a gentle tickle are also becoming extinct. Here, in one book, is the largest known collection of those songs and rhymes. ... Read more

"I saw Esau kissing Kate, / The fact is we all three saw; / For I saw him, / And he saw me, / And she saw I saw Esau." So goes the schoolyard chant that graces this brilliant collection with its title. This "Schoolchild's Pocket Book," edited by lore and literature legends Iona and Peter Opie and gleefully illustrated by Maurice Sendak, definitely belongs on every child's shelf, right next to Mother Goose nursery rhymes and Grimms' fairy tales. I Saw Esau was first published in Great Britain in 1947, but it is vibrantly alive today as a glorious, whimsical collection of more than 170 schoolyard rhymes, ranging from insults and riddles to tongue twisters, jeers, and jump-rope rhymes--"clearly not rhymes that a grandmother might sing to a grandchild on her knee," writes Iona Opie in her introduction. We adore this sturdy, beautifully designed, pocket-sized book of funny, sometimes twisted, but always perfectly illustrated morsels of schoolyard tradition and history. (Ages 4 to 8, and all other ages, too) ... Read more
