A charming collection of counting rhymes and number poems mixes traditional rhymes with contemporary verses by well-known poets.

This charming collection of counting rhymes and number poems mixes traditional rhymes with contemporary verse by well-known poets. One, Two, Buckle My Shoe, for example, is one of the rhymes that has been passed on from one generation to the next as a memory aid for children learning to count. There are rhymes that help children grasp the concepts of addition and subtraction, but there are also wonderful poems and riddles that play with numbers in a natural and amusing way. This book can be used to reinforce early number learning or simply as a delightful introduction to poetry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The world's best children's book
It's difficult to describe how much this book has meant to my family. Our daughter is 6 years old and, until we started reading Harry Potter at bedtime, Whiskers & Rhymes was nightly fare.My husband and I have long since memorized every poem, but we have never tired of either the text or the charming, unique illustrations. My personal favorite: "Sleeping Charlie in his chair.Feathered wings have sprouted there.Away flies Charlie through the air.Across the skies to everywhere."Our first copy has gotten so much use that I bought a hardcover just for "keeps."

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids.
Some are silly, some are sad, and some are very sweet for any age. I've bought a few copies just so I can cut out and frame the great drawings with their poems. My favorite as a book lover is: "Books to the ceiling, books to the sky. My piles of books are a mile high. How I love them! ............" And my now-grown children still remember the "Man dressed all in cheese." Very nice. Very much fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Four kids favorite
Arnold Lobel's charming cats and plain poetry make the small things in life poignant with out being cloying."...the day was fine but now it's better, my freind has written me a letter." The poems are funny, sillyand sometimes romantic."If I were a pot and you were a pan we wouldsit on the shelf together. If I were a mountain and you were the snow wewouldn't much mind the weather."When I begin to read this book to my5 year old, teenage siblings often drift into the room just to hear it allagain. This book has been read in our house for 16 years and it is one ofthe very few that continues to charm me. ... Something has happened to good old Mother Goose--she's not the samekindly storyteller she once was. In fact, that isn't Mother Goose tapping awayat her laptop computer at all. It's Monster Goose! With a diabolical grinbeneath her granny glasses and fangs peeking out from her beak, this twistedmatriarch wreaks marvelously evil havoc on 25 favorite nursery rhymes. Nowfeaturing ghouls, vampire bats, and cannibals, these verses appeal to theperverse corner in every reader's mind. Just a taste:

There was an old zombie who lived in a shoe.
She had so many maggots, she didn't know what to do.
So she soaked them in soapsuds and painted them green.
She'll be giving them out next Halloween.
Not for the faint of heart, Judy Sierra's grisly rhymes are accompanied by suchfabulously hideous illustrations by Jack E. Davis (the Zack Files series, Bedhead, etc.), any potentialnightmares will be diverted by helpless giggles. Readers will delight inidentifying the original classic nursery rhymes behind such titles as "Mary Hada Vampire Bat," "Weird Mother Hubbard," "Hush, Little Monster," and "WerewolfBo-Creep." Sierra and Davis are an ingenious pair indeed. For more ghoulishnonsense, don't miss Sierra's TheHouse that Drac Built. And for still more playful poems, try her Antarctic Antics: A Book of PenguinPoems. (Ages 5 and older) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Twist to Halloween
My six year old daughter loves Halloween and has a strong imagination, I knew she would enjoy this book the first time I read it in the bookstore, it's funny and witty. The illustrations are great and the poems are kooky and fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Poets Pleasure
As the mother of a very imaginative young poet who also likes Emily Dickinson, we found this book to be delightful. Having read so very many rhyming book that were beginning to become blaze this was a refreshing change. She still sings the rhymes and so does her older sister. We would recommend this book to anyone with an imagination.

1-0 out of 5 stars AVOID
My 7 year-old daughter brought this book home from the school library. I stopped reading it about half way through because of some inappropriate material.

Why would you write a book for grade school children that contains poems about 'drinking gasoline' and 'brushing your teeth with turpentine'?

This book is not intended for 12 year olds, who MIGHT be able to determine that the author is only joking. Instead, it is written for the 1st grade crowd.

There are much better things for our kids to be reading. Avoid this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Book Scared My Children
We ordered the book through school. My 1st grade son can home and anounced that he received his book order and he had one book that would give him bad dreams. I looked through the book and found it was not quite what we had in mind. We were looking for something that would use the same old nursery stories, but with a difference. We wanted somthing to spark creativity and imagination, a look at adapting stories. It wasn't that kind of book. I felt it was scary and inappropriate for a young child.
My son didn't want to keep it so we tried to donate it to the school library. The librarian looked at it and said he didn't like to censure books, but this book was just not something they really would like.
We threw the book in the garbage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wickedly Witty
It is always a relief for me to read a childrens book that credits children with the experience and imagination to delight in references to things slimey, disgusting or horror-ful without wanting to get the Bounty and the Raid and make it nice. There are no more eager participants in the imaginative exploration of the gross and horrifying than those of the younger members of our species. Unimpaired by experience, not yet socially sanitized, but trusting the covers of a book, children eagerly go with Sierra to that edge between fantasy and reality for the thrill of the near but safely missed slip into true horrors. So if Barny and Mister Rogers kind of make you want to throw up, get down with the kids like Ms. Sierra does and wollow in the splendidly delightful illustrations of Mr. Davis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wynken, Blynken, & Nod is an enchanting, magical tale
that is as captivating as it is beautiful. It's a wonderful bedtime tradition, for both children and parents. This amazing poem is a timeless classic; there's always something new to discover from the entrancing journey of our trio of fishermen! It's perfect for people of all ages. Come along, and bring somebody you love on the voyage on Wynken, Blynken, and Nod; you won't regret it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Must Have for Every Child
I was not introduced to this poem until I was 18. We were performing it in concert as a part of Midge of Gold which is a collection of children's tales set to music. I fell in love with it and when I found out it was an actual book, it became one of the first gifts I give to parents and children. The melody is one that stays with me and it's a great lulaby. This book is worth more than what you will pay for it. I have not met one person who read it as a child and didn't love it. The poem and illustrations are wonderful. Buying this book for your child, or any child, is a great investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible and beautiful book, always to be remembered
This is a book that my father grew up on, and after having kids of his own, read it to us. As we grew up, this book had somehow disappered, and, having missed it so much, set upon looking for it on the internet. This is a beutiful children story, but not only for children... Don't miss it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great detail
I find Jeanette Winter's illustrations to be delightful. There are just a few words on each page, so my son can really take time to look at the pictures and see how they relate to the words of the song. The little details she puts in are wonderful. We also have The Itsy Bitsy Spider. It's nice to enjoy the book so much when I have to read it over and over!

Jack and Jill went up the hill;
it took them quite a while.
Jack looked into the well and screamed,
"A giant crocodile!"

It's not easy to fetch a pail of water when you're faced with a hungry croc who isn't in the mood to share. What are Jack and Jill to do? Their father's disappeared and their mother doesn't believe in talking crocodiles, but could a plumber help them? Or Bessie, their pet cow? Perhaps if they can come up with the right wish, Jack and Jill might get their water . . . and what they really need, too!

With vivid illustrations, Daniel Kirk expands the classic nursery rhyme and introduces us to two plucky siblings who won't let anything keep them down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Johnny Crow's New Garden
"Johnny Crow's New Garden" continues L. Leslie Brooke's fantasy, started in "Johnny Crow's Garden," anticipating "Johnny Crow's Party." The illustrations, drawn by the author, bridge the gapbetween the day-to-day world of reality and the often-forgotten world ofdream time. Each page illustrates one or two lines of poetry, each stanzaends with "In Johnny Crow's Garden." After reading the book thesewords echo in the reader's and listener's heads as sleep overtakes them.I'd copy the books, but the colors (some of the illustrations are in color, most are line drawings) are so subtle that no copy machine can reproducethem. While "Johnny Crow's New Garden" was only in print from1935 to 1970, I hope that all of Brooke's work will be available to ourgrandchildren's grandchildren. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars The Rooster Crows
This book is a collection of American Rhymes and Jingles from all the ages. It was written 1966, but many of the ryhmes in it are still around today. Some examples are How Much Wood Could a Woodchuck Chuck, Mary had a Little Lamb, This Little Pig, and Star Light Star Bright. This book is very well illustrated, compared to other books of this time period.

5-0 out of 5 stars Peas with Honey
This book was the staple of my rocking chair reading as a child, and it spurred my imagination in a dozen ways. First my mother read them to me, then the book became my own. Thirty years since I last pressed my face to its pages, I raised it with my Creative Writing students this morning in modeling a poetry exercise about how words first impact our lives. There is something other-worldly about the illustrations here, too -- surreal perhaps, even unsettling in the way the best art is. I don't pretend that the verse or the images are cutting edge, or high art, but there is in them something wonderfully off-kilter, and soothing at the same time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection
I love this book and enjoy reading it to my daughter. She loves it, because she has a sense of reading, having memorized many of the verses. It is a wonderful collection of children's rhymes and verses. I feel a real continuity between my own childhood and my daughter's by sharing these with her, as my own mother and grandmother shared these same rhymes with me. A treasure to keep.

4-0 out of 5 stars Famous and not-so-famous rhymes, many uniquely American.
A very nice collection of rhymes for children, most of which are uniquely American. This is not only a nice little book for children and for the serious student of children literature (it won the 1946 Caldecott Medal for best illustration in a book for children), it is also a source of Americana. ... Books for bedtime are always popular with children (and tired parents!) who want one more story before turning off the lights. Michael Hague has selected and illustrated an exquisite collection of 51 poems and lullabies for bedtime or naptime. The familiar favorites are all here, as are lesser-known works from Robert Louis Stevenson, Margaret Wise Brown, Nikki Giovanni, Jack Prelutsky, and many others. Hague's intricate, luminous art is a perfect complement to the selected poems and lullabies, 26 of which have musical notation at the end of the book.
