4-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Sweet
As a second grade teacher, I was collecting books for a chocolate theme when I came across this book. It is a great book for those struggling readers who want to read books about the same things the rest of the class is reading without feeling overwhelmed. It has an early intervention level of 9. The text is written in simple sentences. "New words" are typed in boldfaced print and defined in a glossary. A good non-fiction book for lower level readers in the primary classroom. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Easiest Ever
I work in a daycare and this book has many helpful recipes for different age groups. I would recommend this book to other caregivers and parents. I even recommend this book to those who are just starting to cook.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Choice!
I have never enjoyed a cookbook more! It brought back all those warm fun times I had cooking, with my mother and especially my grandmother, as a child. I love Mr. Radish and his "did you know?" and "just for fun" tips. I work in healthcare and I see time and again adult diabetic patients whose diets are inadequate and unhealthy. If we can instill in the children a love of cooking and empower them to make healthy food choices I believe it will positively affect every aspect of their lives. This cookbook can be a BIG step in that direction. I must note that I gift this cookbook to all the children in my life (nephews, friends kids, etc.) as healthy eating and alot of fun are good things for all children! I also recommend Colleen Bartley's cookbook for big kid's called First Choice...but that's a review for another day. Enjoy the good eats! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best summary of basic nutritional science I've seen
I picked this up at my local library, as I have with many health and nutrition books, but this is the first one that I am going to buy. Most nutrition books I see are full of either iffy science, too much biased opinion, or they're just too complicated for me to follow. This book gives a brief but thorough explanation of all the basics. The text and pictures are concise and easy to follow. I have very little scientific background and I was able to understand all the stuff about mono- di- and polysaccharides, amino acids, enzymes, and all the other molecular stuff and their practical functions in the body. If you're confused about our state of nutritional knowledge today then start here. I wish I'd had a book like this years ago. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kray is OK - No, he's GREAT!
It's about time that someone found a simple (and entertaining) way to explain how important it is for all people to take care of their health - and not through the "magic bullet" of a pill or other medication promoted by a pharmacutical giant or the corner whacko. "The Monster" is written so that kids can easily understand the message.Actually it's written so their parents might understand as well.Pass up your next six-pack (beer or soda pop) and buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars He Has It Right
If you or someone in your life that you love dearly has had health issues, the like of which have been seemingly virtually unsolvable, buy this book. This book is a lifesaver: it will get you moving in the right direction for better health.

Peter Kray has written a smart no nonsense allegory for better health in America. The MONSTER is a wonderful road map suitable for all ages. Peter, like Dr. Sherwin Nuland (HOW WE DIE) advocates that Americans need to take ownership over their individual health by engaging in serious research when faced with health issues. A search for answers regardless of one's ailments is the key to success. Kray asserts that knowledge and education leads to empowerment and control over matters that previously may have baffled us.

The author believes that many of our ailments can be addressed, as they always have been, by a consistent exercise program and adherence to a sensible diet of healthy foods. Kray cleverly debunks how quickly we all run to the altar of the quick fix or magic pill in America. He suggests that the way we treat health issues in this country is merely an extension of our hurry-up-fast-food mentality: we want simplistic answers and an easy regimen in order to solve all our woes.
This attitude, asserts Kray, has left us prey to some pretty nasty stuff. For example, the recent phenomenon of the proliferation of advertisements during prime-time television for
prescription drugs is but one of many. Addiction to tobacco and alcohol are others.

I have already passed this book on to several of my friends who in turn have ordered the book for either themselves or for someone else they believe might benefit from Kray's sharp insights. Maybe this can be the start of a serious grassroots movement. We can hope can't we.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible and educational--highly recommended!!
This book is fascinating in how it discusses the many complexities of the human body; i could hardly put it down. It gives a recipe for such struggles as diarrhea (e.g. 1/2 tsp. honey, pinch of salt, and 1 cup apple juice together then stir & drink it down). Other trivia include such details as to how long the small intestine is (23 ft.) or when you sleep you burn 65 calories an hour. Another fun one for all of us stress living humans, "stress can cause the muscles to tighten making you want to "go". Humans have 16 million smell sensors; a rabbit has 100 million. Definitely a book all ages can appreciate and "wow" over as we appreciate the wonderful machine, the human body that we live in.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware- Grossology at it's WORST!
Now I have to say first that this review comes from a person who is a first grade teacher and a parent. I previewed this book while preparing to do a unit on health and nutrition, and was astounded at the content of this book. I know that grossology has become popular among kids, but this book is beyond even grossology gross!

This book does not even take a realistic look at grossology by explaining the functions and why we have them, instead it makes fun of those functions. For example, the book talks about how the Romans ate flamingo tongues and other revolting delicacies, filling themselves until they could eat no more, then would make themselves throw up and eat again. Hmm, in a world of anorexia and bulemia, I'm not sure this is good or even useful information for young children! Constipation and other subjects are also discussed in a way that kids any age would not be able to seriously look at without laughing and being embarassed.

Parents in the grossology craze of today, I highly recommend that you at least preview this book before handing it over to your child. Teachers, if you are wanting to teach grossology, I strongly urge you to make another choice, this one just misses the mark of being a useful tool for the classroom. Absoloutely avoid this book if you are trying to teach basic health and nutrition, you may get some offended students and parents! ... Read more

Book Description

Tracey Gold was well known to television audiences in the 80s as the wholesome teenage sister on the long-running series Growing Pains. She co-starred for seven years alongside Kirk Cameron as brainy sister Carol Seaver in a picture-perfect American family.A working actress since the age of 4, she was a pretty and professional young star with a limitless future. But behind the smiles Tracey was fighting the battle of her life.

Ten years have passed since photos of the shockingly thin Tracey faced us from the cover of one of People's bestselling issues ever."I always knew there'd come a day in the future, when I was far away from the media glare, when I'd have the proper time and perspective to process all I went through. Now there are many trained experts in the field of anorexia and eating disorders; and there are a lot of girls who struggle with it.I have both: the knowledge and the experience.I want this book to be something girls can turn to for help; something they can pick up and hold, a source of comfort and encouragement. It is for every sister, daughter, or friend whose life has been touched by anorexia nervosa. My celebrity has provided me a forum from which I can help others." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, inspiring, very honest book! Great for Tracey fans!
I am a male, and I got this book because I am a long-time fan of Tracey Gold. I have never had an eating disorder, or known anyone that has, but I still thought this book was wonderful! It is not only about Tracey's battle with anorexia, it is about Tracey! Tracey the actress, mother, daughter, sister, person, and lastly Tracey the eating disorder victim! I do not know why amazon classified this as a "young adult" book, I do not think it is only intended for young adults, but I do think young adults can read it.

When I read this book, I learned a lot about Tracey that I had never known. She is a very honest writer, In the book she talks about when she first became sexually active, menstruation, she shares excerpts from her diary, letters to her husband and many other things that you do not expect in a "celebrity" book. I have read Room To Grow twice, and I think because I am writing this review, I will read it again! I cannot reccommend this book to anyone enough. I let one of my friends borrow it, and after she read it she got her own copy! It is not just for female eating disorder victims, it is for anyone who wants to read it! The number of pages may seem short, but I found the book to be like a long adventure. This is by far the best celebrity-written book I have ever read!

5/5 stars (*****)

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book - everyone should read it!
over the years i have read several books on anorexia and bulimia to try and figure out just how the mind of an eating disorder patient thinks. having an eating disorder myself, i wanted to know if i was crazy or if there was some correlation between my thought process and that of others. some of the books i've read seem to 'glamorize' the disease, some seem to give you new tricks to try yourself to keep you within your own hell, and still others don't quite paint the true picture all around. you seem to be left with a feeling that this person could recover, is recovering or may never recover. for those of us in the midst of an eating disorder, we wonder "will we ever fully recover? and is there life after an eating disorder?" with tracey's book, she was able to walk the reader thru her life far before the physical onset of the anorexia, explained her story without revealing additional ways to destruct oneself and end with her recovery. it's not an easy disease to recover from, and no one is truly free of the disease, but they learn to focus on other aspects of their lives that allow them to be free of the physical and emotional attibutes of anorexia and bulimia. my hope is that people of all walks of life - male and female - read this book. it gives hope to those stuggling at the moment that they too can recover, and it gives reassurance to those who have.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Tale of Inner Strength
I know for myself that talking about your stuggles with anorexia is a very hard thing to do. Ms. Gold describes her feelings very well and provides an inspiration for recovering anorexics and lets them know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I enjoyed this book and could not put it down. I copied several passages in my journal for futher reference because they were so well written. Even if you've never had anorexia, there are many lessons that are taught in this book. This book does not glorify anorexia nor does it avoid the inevitable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This book was a fast and good reading, when you start you don't want to stop. If you like Tracey Gold you would love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative - Not Looking For Sympathy but to Reach Others
from BlueJeanOnline.com
by Truc Doan, age 15, Teen Editor

This book is about an actress who had an eating disorder known as anorexia nervosa. Does this sound familiar? Before beginning to read this book, I looked at the inside cover and immediately believed I was going to endure a literate, extended version of 'Behind the Music' (only without the music, drugs, or groupies). Well, everyone knows that they say about judging books by their cover, right? Room to Grow by Tracey Gold is about her life and her battle with anorexia, but if you're looking for preachy, 'look-at-poor-beautiful-me,' tear glistening in eye cripe, then you won't find it here.

Room to Grow uses fairly simple language to show the development of a problem, the recognition and the conquering of it. Throughout the book, one accepts that acting was simply something Gold did. It didn't define her and it wasn't the cause of her anorexia. Like most little girls, Gold had grown up wanting to please and (with a little help from movies and books) began to believe that if she was skinnier, it would be better. The book itself is not so much autobiographical as it is informative. Gold's life acts simply as a backdrop to the main topic, a disease that kills.

Gold isn't asking for sympathy. She explains this in the first chapter. She just wants to know that somebody read this and it helped them to better understand the disease and to seek help if they have it. Well, I read it and I commend her for caring enough to write it. ... ... Read more
