5-0 out of 5 stars An "I Can Read" CLASSIC
Without a doubt, the Amelia Bedelia books stand tall as good literature in the "I Can Read" genre -- a genre notorious for less-than-interesting stories, owing to the fact that it is subject to limited vocabulary lists. Peggy Parish uses these limitations to her benefit, however, creating a whimsical character in Amelia Bedelia, a woman who takes everything literally (for example, a request to prune the hedges causes Amelia to stick prunes on the hedges, and when asked to draw the drapes in the living room, Amelia scrambles for her pencil and notepad to sketch them).

Amelia Bedelia's peculiarities make for a memorable story -- one that kids will read over and over, and one that parents won't mind sitting in on. This book is highly recommended. (Okay, okay, I loved it when I was a kid!)

And hey, be sure to catch all the other Amelia Bedelia books as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars I learned to love reading with this book.
My great aunt used to pick me up from Pre-school, and together we would read about Amelia Bedelia's adventures. We laughed until we cried in that old green rocking chair. Unto this day, we laugh and talk about the antics of Amelia Bedelia, and we recommend it to everyone, young and young-at-heart alike. Take it from a 21 year-old, you can't outgrow Amelia Bedelia.

5-0 out of 5 stars funny
Amelia is an idiot. She reads things or hears figures of speech and takes everything so literally that she ends up making a fool of her self. In result you learn nothing but you just learn to laugh and learn not to be like Amelia. Reading a book and laughing sometimes is all you need, so enjoy this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A totally AWESOME book!
Many people do not know about or understand autism. But Amelia Bedelia is a prime example of someone with autism. When I try to explain to my daughter's friends and my friends what living with autism means, I recommend that they read one of these books. They are light-hearted and hilarious but yet represent autism in a very real way.

Camp Out

Amelia Bedelia has never been camping in the great outdoors before. She's trying her best to do exactly as she's told, but pitching a tent is not the same as throwing it into the bushes, and catching a fish with your bare hands isn't easy. As usual, the mixed-up housekeeper makes this camping trip one hugely entertaining adventure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rita says this book gets five stars....
My granddaughter Rita is helping me write this review. She says this is one of her favorite books, and she recommends it to other kids. Rita read this book when she was in first grade. She's in second grade this year.

Rita says the story starts when the familiy is going on a camping trip. She says Amelia's Dad says "Let's Hit the Road" and and Amelia picks up a stick and starts hitting the road. Amelia seems to always get things wrong. When they get to the campsite she falls in the river and her clothes are all wet.

But one day, Amelia's Dad forgets his own birthday, so Amelia Bedelia makes a cake and fancy dinner for him. And the family starts singing "Happy Birthday to You." And he thanks Amelia Bedelia for the cake. Amelia finally does something that pleases her Dad. The End.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Beginners
This is a great book for young children. There is no bad language just good, clean reading. It's funny and amusing and will keep your children laughing.

My 7 year old son checked this book out for the library and started reading it alund to me on the way home. We have read several amelia books before and this gave us an inside look at her"family"

A must read for all Amelia fans!

4-0 out of 5 stars Amelia Bedelia's Family Album
This is a good resource to use for both content-area teachers and ELL teachers alike when introducing metaphors for the first time in elementary school. For ELL teachers, I think this book would be suitable for 3rd or 4th graders who have solid comprehension skills of basic idioms. It would be too hard for newcomers.

My daughter and I have been enjoying Amelia Bedelia books for a long time. Even before my daughter was able to understand the puns, she knew something silly was going on. 4-0 out of 5 stars Amelia and the baby
In this book a wacky woman who does not have much common sense baby-sits. This book teaches that you can learn from your mistakes and that the way someone does something different than you might not be the wrong way it might be a better way to do things. It is a good book for 6-8 year olds. It is a good book and I think many kids would enjoy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amelia Bedelia and the Baby
As a child this was one of my favorite books. I just loved anything that had to do with babies, as well as the witty Amelia Bedelia. When I heard of this book it sparked my interest. As usual you can't help but smile when you read about Amelia Bedelia's literal view on life. One of my favorite parts of the book is when Amelia Bedelia is reading her baby-sitting "to do" list and it says to apply powder after bath time. So then Amelia powders herself instead of the baby. Amelia is touched by the thoughtfulness of Mrs. Lane(the baby's mother). This book is altogether clever and enduring. Amelia Bedelia and baby Missy will definately find a place in your heart.

3-0 out of 5 stars Amelia Bedelia and the Baby
This book was a very funny book. It tells about Amelia Bedelia babysitting for the first time and not knowing how everything works. Amelia goes to Mrs. Lane's house and she gives Amelia a list of things to do for the baby while she is gone. After she leaves the baby, Missy, starts to cry. Amelia doesn't know what to do so she looks at the list, it says "Give Missy a bottle", so Amelia went in the kitchen and looked for a bottle. All she found were glass bottles and she decided that that was too dangerous to give to Missy.
Then one of Mrs. Lane's friends, Mrs. Carter, visits to give Amelia strawberries she picked. She notices that Missy is crying and she shows Amelia what kind of bottle she is supposed to give Missy. They give her the bottle and Missy stops crying. Amelia thanks Mrs. Carter and then Mrs. Carter leaves.
When Missy had finished her bottle Amelia saw what she had to do next, it was to give Missy a bath.
After she gave her the bath she checked the list to see what she was to do next it said, "Be sure to use the baby powder", but instead of putting it on Missy, Amelia put it on herself.
Again she checked the list and it said that from two until three is naptime, but Amelia hated naps so she decidedto make strawberry tarts instead. She walked back into Missy's bedroom and she was asleep so she let Missy have her nap for her.
She went into the kitchen and began to make her very good strawberry tarts and after she was done she set all the tarts out on a plate.
Then Missy began to cry again so Amelia looked over her list to see what she had to do now. It was time to give Missy her mashed banana, so Amelia made her way down to the kithchen and picked up a banana and started to mash it with her hands while it was still in the skin. She went upstairs and gave it to Missy. She started to mash it too, and it exploded all over her playpen. So Amelia took her to get another bath.
Next the list said to put Missy in her stroller, so Amelia did that. Then it said, "But first put a sweater on her." So, Amelia took Missy out of the stroller and put a sweater on Missy and put her back in the stroller. She read the list to see what it said next. It said, "Take her out for a while." Which meant to take outside for a little while, but Amelia misinterpreted and took her out of the stroller all together.
She looked at the list again and it was now playtime until five. But she didn't understand because she thought that it meant play time for her. So she took out Missy's toys and began to play. Missy began to fuss and Amelia saw that it was five o'clock and time for Missy's dinner.
She took Missy downstairs with her and put her in her highchair. The list said to give Missy baby food. So, Amelia sliced baby tomatoes, she cooked baby potatoes, and she made baby hamburgers. She put it on a plate then poured ketchup all over it. Misy put her hands in it, tasted it, and ate it all up. Then Amelia gave her one of her straberry tarts to eat for dessert. She ate it too, but now she was a big mess, so Amelia was about to go get her a bath when Mrs. Lane and Mr. Lane came home. Mrs. Lane was terribly mad when she saw all the red stuff all over her baby, but then her husband gave her a taste of one of Amelia's tarts. She loved it and apologized for her bahavior. Missy started to cry so, Mrs. Lane went over to her, but Missy wanted Amelia Bedelia. Mrs. Lane saw that Missy like Amelia Bedelia so she asked her to come back again.
Then Amelia left and she was happy that she had learned about babysitting that day.
I liked this book a lot it would be nice to read to child just for fun because it doesn't really teach any kind of values, but they may learn a few things about babies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amelia Bedelia "literally" plays the game of baseball
Not since Abbot asked Costello "Who's on First?" has the national pastime been taken so literally. Taking things literally is precisedly what Amelia Bedelia has been doing ever since she first became a housekeeper. Tell her to "Dust the furniture" and she will dutifully find the Dusting Powder and do as she was told, even though at her house they undust the furniture. In Peggy Parish's "Play Ball, Amelia Bedelia," the Grizzlies baseball team is in trouble when one of their players gets sick and they need a replacement for their big game with the Tornadoes. Who steps up to the plate to save the day up the literal-minded Amelia Bedelia.

The fun, of course, comes when the kids tell Amelia Bedelia to tag a runner or make a base hit. Then there is the uniform that she comes up with (you need a uniform to play baseball, right?). The illustrations by Wallace Tripp capture the fun as Amelia Bedelia plays the game of baseball like nobody has ever played it before. Besides, you should see what Amelia Bedelia looks like when she swings a bat. Fortunately, one things she knows how to do right is to fix an empty cookie jar because she makes really great cookies (although she has doubts about using home plate to serve them on to her teammates). Fans of Peggy Parish's creation will enjoy seeing her on the baseball diamond while there might be some fans of the sport who will be introduced to the literally-minded housekeeper for the first time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Baseball Story
In this edition of Amelia Bedelia, Peggy Parish has done another wonderful job at telling a wonderful story. Amelia Bedelia is making an attempt to play baseball, and she has managed to take the lessons literally, as always. She learns stealing bases are okay and putting players out. This is a favorite in my household, and we laughed at Amelia Bedelia's attempts of playing baseball.

Our favorite part was when she hit the winning run, 'stole' every single base along the way, and she ran home like everyone told her to with all the bases. The kids were wonderful in this story and patient, and it was a fantastic read.

I recommend the Amelia Bedelia books for every household. Amelia Bedelia is a fun character, and it will make the kids laugh.

Joy.

5-0 out of 5 stars fun fiction
My son is 7 and he loves Amelia Bedelia. He thinks all of these books are a hoot! I loved thim as a child as well!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Baseball Book
I came across this book while looking for books about baseball for my preschooler. Not much to choose from in this niche market, but this book is a hit! My son thinks it's funny when Amelia Bedelia "steals the bases" and "runs home". Wish there were more books like this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for Adults and Children Alike
As a child, I read many Amelia Bedelia books and never tired of them. As an adult, I am looking forward to sharing so many of the stories with my own child. The fact that Amelia takes everything so literally allows for countless scenarios which children (and adults) will find hilarious. Whether "stealing home plate" or "dressing the turkey," Amelia always surprises and delights. Children will be begging parents to read these stories again and again. We can all use good, clean humor in our lives. The time to instill that love of laughter should begin in childhood, and the Amelia Bedelia books will certainly delight children everywhere. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars At least Amelia Bedelia can make perfect cream puffs
In "Come Back, Amelia Bedelia," the trouble begins when Mrs. Rogers asks for some cereal with her coffee. Of course, Amelia Bedleia does exactly what she is told to do and puts the cereal in the coffee. Because of this, Amelia Bedelia is fired by Mrs. Rogers. That means our heroine has to leave the Rogers' home and look for a new job. But no matter where she goes, from the hairdresser to the dress shop, she does what people tell her and she ends up being told to leave. Being a file clerk or helping a doctor with his patients do not seem to suit Ameali Bedelia's peculiar talents either, so it is a good thing that the one thing she always gets right is making perfect cream puffs.

The charm of the Amelia Bedelia stories does not need to be explained to any kid who has been told what to do by their parents. What kid would not want to, just once, literally do what they and told to do the same way as Amelia Bedelia (notice the look on Dickie's face when she puts on the doctor's gloves). Of course, they might only get away with such behavior once, but if a kid picks there moment it could be pretty good (my best moment was when a young woman asked me if I had the time and I said, "Sure, what do you want to do?").

This 1971 story, An I Can Read Book, is illustrated by Wallace Tripp, who does a nice job of capturing both Amelia Bedelia's beguiling smile and her look of confusion when people get upset at her for doing exactly what she was told to do. Young readers will get hooked on this literally-minded lady, so it is a good thing that there are other examples of her misadventures to be enjoyed, such as "Thank You, Amelia Bedelia" and "Amelia Bedelia and the Surprise Shower" (just think of the possibilities with that last one).

4-0 out of 5 stars Wity
This story is precious and timeless. I laughed and had so much fun reading it. Amelia Bedelia is a riot of a woman. She has a wonderful sense of life. She jumps into whatever she does with a willingness to do as she is told, literally.

It's not a long read. You can be done within five minutes. Hilarious to the end. I recommended reading this gem.

4-0 out of 5 stars Come Back, Amelia Bedelia
The Book Come Back, Amelia Bedelia is about a woman who takes things to literally. She goes from job to job making total chaos. It seems as if she can do nothing right. Every job she gets fired from, she is left dumbfounded and confused, she doesn't know what she did wrong. The book starts, like it ends, back to cooking the cream puffs.
I personally though the book was quite good. It was very humorous and full of excitment. Some of the things she does, are unthinkable. You may be able to relate the character Amelia Bedelia to people you may know in real life. The book also teaches a good lesson, don't always take things, for how they are said.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book by Peggy Parish
I read a hilarious book called Come Back Amelia Bedelia written by Peggy Parish. Of course Amelia Bedelia is my favorite character. I like her because she seems so friendly but funny. Amelia Bedelia cracks me up because every time she tries to do a job she does it wrong. If I were her I'd keep trying my best. If I could have maid I would pick Amelia Bedelia because she can cook well, ans she isn't hard to get along with. If she left I would be sad. This is why Amelia Bedelia is a good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mrs. Rogers Finallly Gave Amelia Bedelia a Pink Slip!
While Amelia Bedelia was removing her chocolate cream puffs from the oven, Mrs. Rogers asked for cereal and coffe for breakfast, (she should have said "a bowl of cereal and a cup of coffee,") Poor Amelia poured coffee over a mug of cereal and Gave it Mrs Rogers. In Return, Mrs. Rogers Fired Her, without consent from her husband. So Amelia Bedelia volunteers as a beautician's assistant and pins up a client's hair with sharp safety pins and sticks her. After that she is hired as an assistant-beautician and cuts up expensive dresses to rags, after she stamps some letters at the Post Office by Jumping on them, and sews up a cut with sewing thread, Amelia Bedelia almost forgets about her cooled dessert at home. So she goes back and makes the chocolate cream, so Mrs. Rogers forgives her and rips up the pink slip. After that, at lunch, She heats Mr Rogers a can of soup without opening it in a no-water saucepan on the gas stove.-DANGEROUS. But since then ther have been many Amelia Bedelia Books, and no pinks slips. ... Read more

My g-kids and I love the Amella Bedella series.. Not only because we are around lots of people who speak English as a second language.. But these books are funny and make them think.. These books teach how to use our language can be misunderstood, and that we should always say what we mean not assume that the other one will automatically understand what we mean.. They are fun books..

...Have you ever had a spooky summer break? Well, I'll tell you this, Liza, Jed, and Bill had one spooky break that could go in the record books. Three siblings go on a vacation to their grandparent's house on Pirate Island. Bill, Liza, and Jed find a little opening in some bushes near their grandparent's house, which leads them right up to a beach that shows Cougar Island. After asking their Gran and Grandpa, they realize a rich family once owned it and when they died out, legend says whoever trespasses on the land will be haunted for life. That makes the three even more eager to go and see if the legend is true. Locals of the Island say they see ghost lights at night on Cougar Island. When Jed, Liza, and Bill find out its true, they aren't as excited about going to the Island. Then one of the neighbors, Hermit Dan, is missing some of his stuff. And the newspaper says that they still can't find the thieves who stole from several banks in the area. Do you think Jed, Liza, and Bill will have the guts to go and find who this ghost thief is?
I think this fictional book is excellent because it has many problems that come together into one big plot. It keeps you reading because when the book gets kind of boring with one problem, another one jumps in. One thing I don't like about this book is that there is so much dialogue that it gets annoying.
This book is great for mystery lovers and scary ghost book lovers. Both boys and girls would like this book. I enjoy, "The Ghost of Cougar Island," and hopefully you will too. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Amelia Bedelia
I am not a huge fan of the books, but I do like to read about the things she does. It is quite humerous to read she does things literally. Quite genius of the writer to come up with such a wonderful and well-meaning character. I love the fact that Amelia Bedelia takes every situation in stride and does exactly as she is told.

Amelia Bedelia (I write her name fully because Peggy Parish uses her full name throughout the book) in this read becomes the life of the party. Of course, she doesn't mean to, but she and Alcolu makes the surprise shower exactly into that. A big surprise!!

It is not one of my favorite Amelia Bedelia books, but it does not fall short of who this lovely character is: sweet Amelia Bedelia. Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amelia Bedelia and the Surprise Sower
Amelia Bedelia and the Surprise Shower, is a wonderful child's book, mainly read for and to 6-8 year olds.
When Amelia and her cousin Alcolu is told about the "surprise shower" Mrs.Rogers is having for Ms.Alma they were confused, and then they realized, that a surprise shower is where friends "shower the special someone with gifts for the occasion.
So of course Amelia and Alcolu had a gift too.
The motto of this story is "its ok to be yourself, even if being yourself means strange and comfusing".
I recommend this book to any child, its fun and easy to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amelia Bedelia
The Amelia Bedelia series book Amelia Bedelia and The Suprise Shower from a 4 year olds perspective was a funny and entertaining book. She is told to do something and she literally does it. To quote from the book "Amelia Bedelia do run over this with an iron." Amelia Bedelia got the iron and literally ran over the table cloth with her feet and the iron in her hand. Amelia Bedelia is a great series for younger kids and a good way to teach them to read. It also helps them to understand two ways of looking at things.

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 1/2* Chocolate Fish and Planted Prunes: Amelia is Back!
Amelia Bedelia, a young housekeeper, encounters the ambiguities of the spoken word, with hilarious results. Her problem? She takes words too literally: When asked to "prune the hedge," she and her cousin stick prunes on all the branches. A request to "scale and ice" some freshly caught fish results in her weighing them, and then frosting the fish with chocolate icing! And when she's asked to help give Miss Alma surprise shower. . .well, you can probably imagine her interpretation.

Despite Amelia's well-intentioned miscues, everything ends happily, maybe even better than if she had understood everything as intended. This is one of the best in the Amelia Bedelia series, with lots of fun wordplay and an interesting story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The cool monster
Title: No More Monsters for Me
Author: Peggy Parish
Favorite Characters: Monster, Mom

Minneapolis Simpkin wants a pet so bad that when she comes across a monster, she takes it home. Her mom said that she could not have any pets, but she didn't mention monsters. The problem is hiding the monster when it cries so much and continues to grow every time it eats. Things get even worse when the monster gets hiccups and eats everything in the basement.
Near the end, Minn tells her mom about the monster, but her mom doesn't seem to believe her. Her mom does make a certain promise to Minn if she gets rid of the monster. Read the book to find out what her mom promises.

Minneapolis Simpkin wants a pet. She and her mother fight about it all the time. Then one day she finds one, but it is a monster. But how can she ask her mom for a monster? Minneapolis hides the monster in her basement. When it eats everything in her house, she does not know what to do.

This is a more humorous story, especially if you are the kind of person who wants a pet. I think Minneapolis learns a lesson, that maybe what you want is not always what you expected. I think all of us can pretty much relate to that. If you enjoy homor stories, this is the right book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun book!
My daughter has a fascination for monsters, so I knew that she would adore this book. Now she has a book about a monster that I can read to her at bedtime without worry of bad dreams. It's a very cute story.

I cannot tell you how much my sons love this book! They love this green monster and all the silly things that he has done with Minn. 5-0 out of 5 stars Amelia Bedelia is the BEST!
When I was a kid, I wore Merry Christmas Amelia Bedelia out! I probably couldn't tell you much about the plot, but anybody who's ever read an Amelia Bedelia book knows that it's all about her doing everything wrong! The only thing that sticks with me is the picture of Amelia stuffing the Christmas stockings with turkey stuffing, which to this day I find hilarious. I don't know what it is about this one particular story, maybe it's because it's the only Amelia Bedelia book I ever read, but I love it just the same. I my mind, it ranks up there with Charlotte's Web and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory; it's just one of those funny, timeless books that fed my lifelong passion for reading and writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Merry Christmas Amelia Bedelia
This book is really good for children of all ages. It shows you that you have to explain things in detail, because someone might take you literally. The writer is comical and serious at the ssame time which is a good combonation. This book also shows that you can mess up and things can still come out right.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a very good book
At one point, (page 14) the book and the tape don't match. The book lists Apatosaurus and the narrator says Brontosaurus. Will NOT buy this line of books again.

2-0 out of 5 stars outdated dino ideas for kids
