4-0 out of 5 stars Kids' Outdoor Parties
The book has lots of great ideas for 35 themed parties. Each party includes ideas for invitations, costumes, decorations, food, games and other activities, favors and a theme-related cake. The games, and activities (mostly crafts) have easy to follow directions and are fun and creative. Costume ideas range from a suggestion they come in casual clothes to an actual costume wear to the party or one you provide.

For most parties there are a range of options that fit a variety of price ranges. You could splurge on a high cost favor idea and save on a less expensive invitation idea. Each party suggests an age range for which it is appropriate and most are for the upper end, say 7-12. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars * Have it.. Like it...but could be more detailed..*
First of all, i just want to say that i enjoy most of the American Girl library, and that this one is no different. The food sounds great[read the book and you'll understand TOTALLY what i mean]but i have not found much time to make any of it.
Still, they could have been abit more detailed. And i will admit some of the games were EXTREMELY pointless and immature for my agegroup.

Overall, reccomended for ages 8-11

This book is my favorite book! It has a ton of great ideas for slumber parties. It has games, snacks to make, themes to choose from, invitations to make, and much, much more! You have to get it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The TitleTells it All
This book was not only very intresting, but full of WONDERFUL ideas. People are still talking about the best sleepover they ever attended. And that was 3 years ago, all thanx to this WONDERFUL book. I can't say enough good things about it!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great help in planning sleepovers!!
The only thing my daughter wanted for her 10th birthday was a sleepover with 5 of her "best friends". I had no clue where to start to help her...and myself...out on this one. Luckily, we subscribed her to the American Girl magazine & had just received the February edition. It contained so many cool ideas for games, themes...even recipes...and it mentioned this book. I ordered the book the same day & have not regretted it for one second! Erica was able to pretty much plan & run her entire party & she & her friends had a blast doing it! I'd recommend it to any parent whose daughter is begging to have a slumber party...or even just a sleepover with one friend. It lets girls "be in charge" and gives them a great feeling knowing that they were able to plan and carry out the whole thing with only a little help and supervision from mom & dad! Too bad this book wasn't around when I was 10! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Party On(?)
This book has eight "Magical" themed parties including an Alchemist's Gathering and an Egyptian Summer Solstice Party. It gives suggestions for costumes, decorations, food and activities. It also includes a story to go along with each theme.

I give a LOT of children's parties, most of which include storytelling and crafts. I purchased the book because the kids absolutely loved the ideas in the Book of Wizard Craft by the same authors (which, by the way, I used at several parties in the last year). This one falls short of the Craft book on several counts:

While using the same format as the Book of Wizard Craft, this volume has less substance and more fluff. Many of the activities appeared in more complete form the Craft book. The stories are not as well developed and the art is poor.

The illustrator, Marla Baggetta, tried to copy Lindy Burnett's style for this volume, but fell short of the freshness and vitality of the illustrations in the Craft book. Double-page spreads for each theme do nothing but act as filler, as does the same wizard's robe which appears in each section and then again in the back of the book with only slight variations in decoration.

The wizard "author" mentions in the introduction that it took 600 years to write the Craft book. It's pretty obvious that it didn't take the authors nearly that long to throw together the Party book. If you are specifically looking for ideas for use at a party you might find this book useful. If you are looking for ways to entertain elementary school children for an afternoon or several weeks, purchase the Wizard Craft book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A fun but not that informative read
This book ahd some interesting ideas for some parties, but none of them were that expanded upon. And many of the partis required a lot of planing and rely on decorating. If you just want some simple jump start ideas, read this book. If you are looking for a party planner in a book, look somewhere else. ... Read more

I bought this book for my daughter, about to celebrate her 10th birthday.I think we will need to have several birthday sleepover bashes, as there are way too many great ideas in this book for her to choose enough for only one night!Really creative invitations, inexpensive crafts, age appropriate food preparation, laugh giggle and squeal games, with clear instructions for the 8-12 age group.Great for this age, where she really wants to be involved in the planning. I don't know if the girls will get any sleep, but it looks like we're going to have a terrific party. Or two. Or more?

3-0 out of 5 stars 52 Activities
The idea of 52 cards, each with one idea for a party is a clever one.It means you can mix and match to put together a party your child will love.

Most of the activities in the pack are games, largely reworkings (or just renaming) familiar games. There also are some crafts and make-your-own-refreshments ideas.Ideas for party themes and destinations were mostly pretty run-of-the-mill.

Overall, the card format may be just what is needed to get the creative juices going, but it's lack of any kind of organization may make it hard to find specific information. The playing card format would make this easy to carry around for someone like a camp director. The idea is creative, but the activities aren't. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Super Book!
I was hosting two parties in one week: one for a group of my children's friends (teens and pre-teens) and another for a group of my own friends (Gen X'ers and Baby Boomers). There were so many varied games in this book that both groups had a great time. Instructions are easy to follow and the games are all instantly addictive. If you're looking for something beyond the typical board games you'll find at most parties, this is perfect for you. Most games require only players and their brains, a few others require pen and pencil. No matter what, everything we played from this book was a lot of fun. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Praise for SPG
I was in charge of entertaining forty-two people for over two hours and I am not particularly outgoing. I'm actually pretty ingoing. I bought this book in a store, along with several others, but only used this one because it made me laugh and seemed particularly straight-forward. It's well-written, clear, clever, and concise. All of the games are explained in a page or two. Chaneski details the possible pitfalls of some games and suggests remedies-his predictions were accurate and his suggestions surprisingly effective. People who didn't know one another when the evening began were leaning on each other with laughter by the end of it. I was able to set up non-competitive games for people who preferred that (a good number simply would not participate in competition but were willing to be goofy as hell in a non-competitive endeavor). Several participants wanted copies the book and while I was on line arranging it, I thought I'd steer others to this remarkable little compilation.

John, Thank you for writing this complete book of party games. I look forward to trying a few of them.
