5-0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare.......in English
This book was very good. It gave life to Shakespeare. While I appreaciate the beauty of his words, sometimes Shakespeare is a little......stuffy. But not in this book! It tells Shakespeare in a language I can understand. Even my 7-year-old brother was reading it!!! This is definatly a good book for anyone to enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars I learned a lot about Shakespeare
Not only does this book count down the top ten Shakespeare stories, but between each chapter there are the top ten lists like " Top Ten Shakepearian Actors" . My favorite one was a list of all the people that might have written the plays instead of Shakespeare. You should know that the book doesn't have the real plays, just the summeries and facts. The only problem I had was that there wasn't much detail- Like in Hamlet, it was just one of the characters saying how everyone died, and not a lot of detil of what else happened. But it was still a good book, and you'll really like it if you read Horrible histories.

3-0 out of 5 stars Top Ten Shakesphere Stories
Shakespheres Stories was a good book. The book told you about the 3 diffrent typs of writtings he did. It tells you little interesting facts and tidbits about him and the history and actors of his plays. The book wraps up his plays in diffrent point of views you understand for example:Hamlet is explained through an officer writting a police report.

5-0 out of 5 stars great Shakespeare book!
great book, good quizes between stories, good ways of telling the stories, just all-together great!

5-0 out of 5 stars A CHANGE OF HEART
MY DAD IS REALLY INTO SHAKESPEARE. HES ALWAYS TRYING TO GET ME TO SEE THE BEAUTY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGES AND THE TAPESTRY OF WORDS AND ALL THAT JUNK. WHEN I TELL HIM TO STOP NAGGING ME, HE STARTS QUOTING HAMLET AND MCBETH UNTILL I JUST LEAVE. THAT WAS BEFORE I READ 'SHAKESPEARE STORIES'. THIS BOOK PUT SHAKESPEARE IN UNDERSTANDABLE LANGUAGE, SO I COULD SEE WHAT MY DAD MEANT ABOUT THE 'BEAUTY OF THE STORY'. OK, IM GETTING THERE. BUT ANYWAY, AFTER READING THE BOOK, I TOOK A SHAKESPEARE CLASS AT SCHOOL. WE DID THE PLAY OF 'ROMEO AND JULIET' AND I GOT JULIET! NOW I REALLY LIKE SHAKESPEARE! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Diez Deditos
The author, Jose Luis Orozco, is a bilingual educator/singer who keeps English-speaking and Spanish-speaking children interested throughout his books and accompanying music. As a substitute teacher, I have used his books and tapes extensively in elementary school classes over the years. I have had the privilege of attending his concerts at elementary schools several times and have thoroughly enjoyed his work.

I recommend the two books authored by Jose Luis Orozco, that I have purchased and read many times with students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Spanish starter
I bought this book & the accompanying CD. To be honest, I don't use the book to sing along with the CD as much as I thought I would. But...when I do, it is great. There are wonderful, colorful pictures, English & Spanish words to every song, and an explanation of the origin/tradition of the song. Lots of fun, I hope my 15 month old is absorbing some of it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great with the album, not so great by itself.
I got the book and the music album together and I absolutely love them. The book makes the music a lot more meaningful-- even if you know enough Spanish to understand the music, the book is still useful to show you finger-plays and dances to go along with it. However, I wouldn't have gotten much out of the book by itself. Unless you are really good at reading music, get the album too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book from infants to preschoolers
This is a great book that both my kids love. I also got the CD that goes with it. The illustrations are very interesting and filled with details. If you can read music you can also play the songs along. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!!!! Yes, buy the music too!!!!
My husband and I bought the book and CD to accompany it. Fabulous! The book's illustrations are rich and vibrant, with lyrics, with music, and hand signs too! Both of our daughters (3yo and 1 yo) LOVE the music and follow along with the book making the hand/body motions. It is the kind of children's music that is gentle and enjoyable to the adult ear. Great family fun! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ENCHANTING
I first came across this book in one of my university classes (Music for the Child)and fell in love with it immediately. It is now is my son's (age 2 1/2) favorite book. Even my husband loves it. We can all recite it by heart. It's a great way to introduce musical instruments to young children. My son recently saw a harp in person for the first time and recognized it right away because of this story. The prose, the illustrations - all are wonderful!!! A must for any child's library!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh, charming, artistic approach to counting and music
I wish I could give this book 6 stars, because it is a truly wonderful book for preschoolers. One by one, the instruments in a classic orchestra are introduced, combining simple counting with music education. The text is in elegant rhyme, perfectly complemented by the bright, original & whimsical illustrations (make sure you pay attention to the "dance" performed by the cats, dog and mouse). A top-notch addition to a young child's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emergent readers' gem!
Being a cello player myself, I believe all children should be exposed to music as soon as possible. This is a great introduction to music, orchestras, and the sounds the instruments make. It's great for emergent readers because of the rhyming and the way the words seem to flow from page to page. The illustrations are beautiful and whimsical. I really like the way the author uses pretty advanced descriptive words for the sounds the instruments make, like 'mournful moan' for the trombone and 'the reeds implore'.

Students will also learn basic information about musical groups, such as what they're called, octet, quintet, etc. A great part of this book is that the musical terminology is not reduced to children's levels. The words are quite large and reflect what is really true about classical musical instruments and musical groups. I think children would enjoy seeing the illustrations and learning about these instruments, and perhaps picking their favorite one. It plants an early seed in their head about orchestral groups, makes music fun, and perhaps creates a new generation of orchestral students.

3-0 out of 5 stars Obviously, this is a minority opinion
As the 20-plus reviews thus far have ALL been five stars! So, take what I say with a grain of salt...

and even I actually mostly like this book (though I know at least one person who actually dislikes the book and won't read it anymore -- she finds the art ugly and the text strained -- but I'm married to her, she can write her own review).

I don't particularly notice the art, I'm usually half-asleep when reading this book to my 4-year-old in bed. But the text does sometimes jar me -- my teeth practically break when I get to the lines that rhyme CELL-o with hell-O (clearly one is supposed to pronounce it HELL-o here, but I can't make myself do it) -- on the other hand, some of it's really quite nice: "with steely keys that softly click//its breezy notes so darkly slick,..." (that ought to give you a sense of it -- if you say that aloud and think "ooh, I like the way those words fit together", and you want to say them to your child, then get this book. If you think "a clarinet's notes are breezy? or slick?"
or you worry about the rhyme of clarinet and septet, then maybe it isn't for you.)

Still, I like the nice twist on counting books, with 1,2,3,
becoming solo, duo, trio, etc. -- and the mouse-cats-dog subplot in the pictures is cute, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
My three year old loves this book. We've read it only a few times, but he can already correct me if I mess up. He is learning to count, about instruments, the orchestra. It is just a fabulous book. Not to mention the terrific artwork. This is definately one of my favorites!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Hasn't Anyone Else Reviewed This Book Yet????
Some of you might not be aware of this, and some of you might be: I am a cross-sections addict! If there was a cross-sections book on something as meaningless to me as the insides of a toilet, chances are that I'd be interested in it. That said...after reading Inside the Worlds of Episode 2 I can't help but wonder why no one else has reviewed this. I mean, it's not like it was released a few days ago. This has some sights in it that are, in my opinion, simply incredible. The Clone Army's training center alone was worth buying this book. The book even lays out events like the ending battle in the movie and routes taken during the speeder chase on coruscant. There's stuff in here that was never mentioned in the movie (even in the deleted scenes), and it's stuff that makes the world of Star Wars just come alive in its own way. Now, Mr. Lucas, once you're done with Episode 3, how about making a movie where you give a tour of these locations? ... Read more

A spiritual story about the far-reaching effects of private actions.

Mole has always led a simple life, but lately he feels something is missing. When he first hears someone playing a violin, Mole realizes that he longs to make beautiful music, too.

Through practice and patience, Mole learns to play. And even though he plays alone, in the privacy of his underground home, his music has an effect on others that is more magical than Mole will ever know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You David McPhail
I would like to take this opportunity to thank David McPhail's parents for having a child who grew to write this book. MOLE MUSIC will surely be a classic, loved by future generations of creative dreamers. Seldom does such a simple story resonate so deeply. It takes a great talent to wield so few words to mean so much.

When Mole sees a violinist on television he is so touched by the music he wants to make beautiful music of his very own, so he orders a violin for himself. When it arrives he can only cajole it to make horrid, screeching sounds. But Mole, the industrious, kind-hearted and hard worker that he is continues to practice (and practic and practice). After many years his music is even more lovely than the violinist he saw so long ago. Dear, dear Mole wishes he could change the world with his music--and Mr. McPhail shows the change that occured because of Mole's efforts strictly through the art. I won't give it away, but it is a great change indeed, and all the more touching because Mole played his music not for fame, but for the love of the music itself and a desire to share beauty with the world.

The words and art blend seamlessly together, one never overshadowing the other. This book is as a bright star in the world of Children's literature. I can only imagine that Mr. McPhail himself is like Mole--for who else could write a book like this? It's a visual song from the heart that could possibly change the world by inspiring young children to create some lovliness of their own. Thank you David McPhail--and thanks to your parents too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Child & Adult Inspiration
I first heard this story as a part of a sermon given to a congregation of mixed ages. The children were enthralled with the illustrations (as were many adults) but the "message" was deeply felt by the "older" child in all of us there. It is the message that no one really knows how much influence they have. Mole was just doing something that really intrigued and interested him, and brought him pleasure. He wished that he could influence others, but never knew what his music did for the world. Maybe this is true for each of us as we pursue what we really have a passion for. The message is true for children and adults alike. I will share this with my young 8 year old violinist friend, and from the pulpit. Thank you, David McPhail!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Lesson for Us All
I'm 43 and checked this book out of the library to read to my kids. I was so moved by it that I plan to buy several copies as gifts for both adults and kids. I'd like to have the artwork on the walls of my music studio to remind me . . .it's all about the energy we put out into the world. A timeless and most important lesson! Thank you David McPhail!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mole's Music
Not only is the story itself quite clever but the music notes in the growing tree are also quite well chosen. When Mole begins to play the violin the music that is produced on the tree is what almost every beginner learns to play, "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star". The music of Brahms and Beethoven are illustrated in the tree throughout the book. When the soldiers first stop at the tree, the notes are from Beethoven's 6th Symphony,"The Pastoral". When the soldiers drop their weapons and shake hands, Mole is playing "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's 9th Symphony. And what better way to go to sleep than to Brahms' Lullaby, shown on the very last page as Mole goes to sleep. A wonderful book for adults and children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet book shows shy kids confidence

1-0 out of 5 stars anti-Christian book
This book is positively horrible! Within just the first few pages it starts up with the old stereotypes of the mean Catholic nuns teaching school. It then goes on to develop the hero of the story - Kathleen's 20 year old aunt "Polly" who likes to wear bright red lipstick, smoke, and hates anything to do with Christianity or the Church. The truth is that "Polly's" real name is "Mary", but she cannot bear the idea of that name so she demands that everyone call her "Polly" instead. In one scene Polly lectures her brother-in-law, Kathleen's father, on the dangers of going to church, praying, and devotions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Passed By (Too Quickly) With Flying Colors!
"The rough, distempered floorboards seemed to disappear from under me, my feet barely brushed them, and I flew. It was all airy and feathery, like walking on water, like skimming over clouds. I was kicking and twirling in a new, airy element flying in time with the music into a different world, where weight didn't matter, where gravity didn't exist...I was going to dance my way to the stars on airy-fairy feet, light as air, free as a bird." Just like Kathleen feels when she's dancing, this book flew by in a whirl of vivid characters, brilliant descriptions, and happily ever afters.
Kathleen Murphy, a poor Irish girl, is made to take dancing lessons by her strict teacher Mother Rosario. After being tricked into believing the lessons are free, she has to quit after one wonderful, tantalizing class because it is too expensive. Mrs. Maguire, the dance instructor, gives her a scholarship, and it seems like she can finally dance, as she loves to do. But soon, she is accepted into the dancing feis, a big competition, and needs a costume. Kathleen will try anything to get that expensive costume!
This book was delightful to read. The plot was sometimes funny, sometimes serious, and it ended in a wonderful happy ending. The characters were all very true-to-life, and you could relate to them and feel happy and sad for them. I also learned about Ireland in the 1930s and '40s.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Riverdance" meets "Angela's Ashes"
Kathleen Murphy lives in Dublin, Ireland in 1937. Ireland is in the midst of another Depression, and Kathleen's father is out of work. After showing up to her (Catholic) school late one too many times, one of the sisters recommends Irish dance lessons as a way to keep Kathleen out of trouble. Kathleen finds from the very first lesson that she loves to dance and has a real talent for it, but the issue of not being able to pay for classes nearly ends her career at the beginning.

She is chosen to represent her dance school at a feis (dance competition), but is haunted by her mother's severe illness and her lack of money for a dance costume (a requirement to participate). Her favourite Aunt Polly grows distant as well, and Kathleen prays for a miracle. Her miracle does indeed come, but not in a way anyone expected!

"Kathleen: The Celtic Knot" is a fabulous read, very Irish in character (each novel is written by someone from the country it takes place in) and similar at times to Irish novelist Frank McCourt's voice. Many Irish expressions and Gaelic words are sprinkled liberally in the text. The back of the book features a segment on life in Ireland and a glossary of Irish/Gaelic words and expressions. An uplifting tale for American Girl fans and Irish dance enthusiasts, those who love Irish culture or those just looking for an entertaining read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A story of miracles
It is 1937 and Ireland is in another Depression and once again twelve-year-old Kathleen Murphy's father is out of work. For Kathleen it is devastating for she will never be able to afford Irish dancing lessions which she hold so dear to her heart. But miracles do happen, and because she has a great amount of talent Mrs. Maguire , the dance teacher, allows Kathleen to take lessons for free, but when the yearly contest draws near, Kathleen begins to dread each impending day for she knows her family has no money to spare for a fancy dance costume. Of course miracles continue to happen for Kathleen and it looks like she might acturally get her dress, but yet again there is another roadblock for her mother falls unexpectantly ill. Who will now make the dress Kathleen so desires and where will the money come from? It seems impossible, but when one thing leads to another Kathleen finds herself flying across the stage in her first contest. This was another great Girls of Many Lands book. I recommend you to read all the other ones too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good story!
In this story, twelve-year-old Dubliner Kathleen Delaney is given the chance to take Irish dancing lessons in 1937 and discovers she has a talent for it.
I really liked this book because it showed you all about Irland in the 1930s. IRLAND RULES! ... Read more

Book Description

For the first time in Wolfgang's life, the famous composer was at a loss for a tune. He tried every trick to get his imagination going. He sang standing on his head. He played his violin in the bathtub. He even threw darts at the blank music paper. Alas, nothing worked.

An imaginative story about Mozart's many inspirations

Wolfgang Mozart must compose a new piano concerto to perform at the famous Burgtheatre in Vienna. But Mozart can't think of a note to write. When he hears his hungry pet starling sing out melodiously, his creativity begins to flow. Before he can put notes to paper, however, his muse escapes through the window, and Mozart is off on a frantic search to bring her back. Will Mozart find both his friend and song in time?

Based on a true story about the famous composer and his beloved pet starling, this enchanting tale celebrates inspiration in any form it takes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Brian's Song reviewed by ADW
Brian's Song is the story of two men, Brian Picolo and Gale Sayers and how they came to be friends. They fight for the same job but to find out who gets it you have to read the book.

Their friendship is tested when Brian becomes ill. I thought the book was good but it made me sad. To find out why, you'll have to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENT Book, a constant page-turner!
I love this book, because it is great! This book is one of my most favourite books that I have ever read. It narrates a real story about a truthful friendship between two men, who are from different races, have different personalities and come from different places in USA, but become best friends like brothers. The story of the book carries the theme that a true friendship always takes place in the hearts of people even with many diffences that exist.

Brian Piccolo is a white man; he is a very easygoing person and likes to talk a alot. Gale Sayers is a black man and is a very shy person. They both meet while playing for an American football team, the Chicago Bears.

As life goes on the playing fields, their friendship starts by playing some practicle jokes on each other, but with the problems that come up, they become best friends. This great friendship comes to a sad tragedy at the end! I burst into tears at the end, because it is such a heart-moving, great story.

Even though I don't know much about American football, I really enjoyed reading this book alot. I HIGHLY recommend this book to everyone. This book will definitely capture the hearts of people who read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sean's Review on Brian's Song
Brian's Song is an unbeliveble book. Brian and Gale fight for the starting running back position on the Chicago Bears. At the same time they begin to become best friends. They dont care that they are different collors or come from different parts of the country, thet put all that aside. This book isn't just about football it is about life and death.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brian's Song
I was fortunate to watch the movie it's first airing on ABC. I was 6 years old. It has ever since been my favorite. Brian's story and love of life has sustained me through several football injuries and especially the injury that would cut my football career short.

When two men have what Gale Sayers and Brian Piccolo shared we can only sit back in awe. They were able to come from different parts of the country and in a time when it was not acceptable for white and black men to share such a close friendship, they were able to show so much devotion to one another. Gale Sayers showed that a man could proclaimed his love and friendship on the night that should be for him when he was awarded the NFL's Most Courageous Player. This is much more than a football story, it is a story of life ... as well as death.

5-0 out of 5 stars My kids love this book!
We checked this out at the library and after one reading I knew we needed our own copy. We've had it for a year now and they still squeal when I take it from the shelf. We made up our own motions to go with the lyrics. The girls love pointing out the colorful birds and critters in the pictures so much, it takes forever to read it,... It's a delight!

I was happy to see that on this web page credit is given to the woman who wrote the lyrics. Our copy only has Debbie Harter's name on it (and I looked for a writer's name). ... Stella Blackstone earned it--this book is a riot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Please read it again, Mom?
A sure-fire indication of a hit--I read this book nine times (eight by request) the first day we got it. My 2 year old loves it, and was dancing around the house singing "boogie, woogie, oogie" tonight. A brightly colored, fun book...definitely worth having.

4-0 out of 5 stars Boogie, Oogie, Oogie!

1-0 out of 5 stars He's not just a Star Wars Star!
I read this book in anticipation of knowing more about this outstanding actor. The author talked only about SW, and briefly talked about his best film to date, "Life As A House". This is a serious actor, no matter what people think about his performance in Star Wars. I don't reccomend this book. You will find a much better bio of him online. Check out his fan bases.

2-0 out of 5 stars Love Christensen did not love author
Being a large fan of Hayden Christensen, I pounced on the chance to read a biography on him.
However, I must say, I was very dissapointed! Though there were some nice photographs of Christensen, the author published this book before Star Wars came out, which I thought a mistake, because everything the author said was a perdiction!
Other then that, the author made everything too brief and talked more about his Star wars movie then the rest of his life. I was sad as the author went into painstaking detail on lightsabers, and yet said only a paragraph about my favorite film of his, "Life as a House." Overall the author used fair language, and for the most part Hayden Christensen deserved a better biographer. Maybe I will try to some day! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Trip
Any child who's had to move to a new neighborhood can sympathize with Louie, the main character of "The Trip". Feeling lonely on Halloween, the boy creates a city scene from construction paper and an old shoebox. As the title of the book suggests, Louie takes a night-time "trip" back to his old neighborhood by pretending to fly his toy plane there. As he wanders the familiar streets he encounters some strange individuals. He runs away, but they catch up with him. Luckily, a familiar feature on one of them clues Louie in on their identities. One of the things I enjoy most about Mr. Keats' books are his believable characters. Young readers can easily relate to them and the different situations they are placed in. What makes Keats' stories even more wonderful is that they are infused with charm and a hint of the imaginary, which are emphasized by his lovely paint and collage illustrations. Readers who liked Louie in "The Trip", can see him in "Louie" and "Regards to the Man in the Moon." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Lois Burdett
What a great way to introduce children to classic literature and universal themes! My 1st-3rd graders are entranced by The Tempest. They love the way it rhymes and the complicated plot. They have seen parallels between this story and The Hobbit. Immediately, they compared Caliban to Gollum and remembered how Gandalf threw his voice to cause the fight among the trolls much the same way Ariel did. I really recommend this series to teachers and parents alike. The Tempest in particular is great if you are studying Jamestown as it is believed that Shakespeare was inspired by newspaper accounts of a ship (bound for Jamestown) that got lost at sea due to a great storm. It landed on a tropical island where the crew and passengers were stranded for a few months. I most definitely will buy more books from this series (or my students might revolt). ... Read more
