5-0 out of 5 stars Down Right Purdy!
I thought this was a beautiful Americanized version of Perrault's "Cendrillon". Unlike another reveiwer, I was not at all offended and thought this was a charming tale. The author's interpretation of a down-home style Cinderella story was right on target. I loved the idea of the hog replacing a fairy god mother! A fun read!

1-0 out of 5 stars Think Twice
This book is a mockery of Southern Appalachian people. Not only is the dialect incorrectly conveyed, but the pictures are demeaning as well. Mr. Schroeder, a native Californian, obviously made little (if any) attempt to get to know the group about whom he writes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Truely Wonderful Story
This book has a storyline much like the traditional Cinderella. It features Appalachian dialect which is remarkable. This story is an added bonus to any fairy tale unit and an excellent reading experience. ... Read more

Book Description

The universally celebrated fairy tales of Charles Perrault--Little Red Riding Hood, Puss in Boots, Blue Beard, Cinderella, The Sleeping Beauty, and Little Tom Thumb, among others--were first published in France in 1697.Everyone knows most if not all of these tales, but few realize that Perrault was the first to put these stories, which had been passed down through the oral tradition for generations, in written form.

Through the centuries, the stories have been adapted and changed. Now, this profusely illustrated volume presents Perrault's original texts--filled with beautiful princesses, evil ogres, talking cats, and fairy godmothers--and their concluding morals.Readers will find new enjoyment in these delightfully illustrated versions of Perrault's tales, some of the earliest and most entertaining accounts of our favorite stories.

CHARLES PERRAULT (1628 1703) published a collection of eight fairy tales in 1697 entitled Histoires ou contes du temps passe avec des moralites, (Histories or Tales of Long Ago with Morals). The work became the most important and popular collection of fairy tales until that of the Grimm Brothers in 1812. These fairy tales were not invented by Perrault; the stories had been passed down through many generations through the spoken word, but Perrault was the first person to write them down in the form which we know today as the fairy tale.

Book Description

There is perhaps no better loved, no more universal story than Cinderella. Almost every country in the world has a version of it, but the favorite of story-tellers is the French version by Charles Perrault.

This translation is excellent for story-telling and also for reading aloud. Marcia Brown's illustrations are full of magic and enchantment from the little cupids putting back the hands of the clock to the last scene at the palace. They are pictures that will stay in a child's mind. ... Read more

Charles Perrault first published his collection of classic French folk tales 300 years ago, including "Cinderella," "Sleeping Beauty," and this entertaining story about a most clever feline. In Puss and Boots, a poor miller dies and leaves his youngest son nothing but a cat. The son is none too happy about it, either; " ...once I've eaten my cat and made a muff out of the fur, I'm sure to starve," he says. But what a legacy the bequeathed cat turns out to be! The cat in tall boots creates a new identity for the youngest son--the Marquis of Carabas, complete with fine clothes, fields of wheat, a castle stolen from an ogre, and in the end, the respect of the king and the hand of the king's daughter. The story itself is gracefully and humorously told, and the text, set in large gray type, adds an old-fashioned air to the tale.

Fred Marcellino's illustrations for Puss in Boots--a Caldecott Honor Book--are infused with golden light and summer warmth in the sun-dappled woods and beside the fields of ripe grain. Many of his paintings show a masterful use of perspective; the reader sometimes looks down on a scene as though from a balcony, or from below, at a huge charging lion. Marcellino has also illustrated a version of Hans Christian Andersen's The Steadfast Tin Soldier and two books by Tor Seidler, A Rat's Tale and The Wainscott Weasel. Young listeners won't soon forget this crafty character of a cat, who has a great deal of charm despite his less-than-honest means of helping his master. (Ages 5 to 9) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Marcuse translation is an excellent translation.
Marcuse's translations are always excellent, and this one is no exception. It is not flawless, but it is excellent nonetheless. I have read this translation several times, checking it against the text from which it was translated. There were no grammatical errors to be corrected. I chose to word some sentences differently, to suit my regional native Spanish, but speaking as a professional translator, this translation is well crafted.
I would have to disagree with the Horn Book review. This translation is well executed. While the reviewers may be experts in children's literature they seem to be lacking a grasp of the Spanish language, even at a children's level. In either language this edition of El gato con botas is well deserving of the Caldecott Honor Book award. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Charles Perrault and Nameless Women
Charles Perrault has written many great fairy tales we all know and love. Though Perrault's brilliance has made him popular in writing, he reinforces an oppressive patriarchal ideology. The story of "bluebeard" which is found in his collection, give women no moral. Perrault creates a man that wants complete control over his wives, and then creates a woman who will follow the old customs of doing everything her husband says. This isn't neccessarily a bad thing, but Perrault gives this woman who is tied down with marriage and the burden of being a housewife no name. She is only referred to as "she" and "her" throughout the fairy tale. Perrault's stories are great for fairy tale lovers, but if you have any feelings towards giving women their own freedom, then this might not be the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source for enthusiasts
Our oral history of the tales of "Cinderella" and "Sleeping Beauty" have certainly changed! This is an excellent source for anyone hoping to find the roots of the fairy tales which we all know and love today. Perrault's prose is surprisingly terse, which may grate with the modern conception of these tales, but he also holds nothing back. Thankfully, Philip and Simborowski include all of his tales, even the dark and disturbing "Donkeyskin," which has been left out of most translations. I have used this book as pleasure reading, but it really shines when I pull it off the shelf for serious essays and presentations. Philip and Simborowski provide helpful anecdotes on Perrault's life and the stories themselves, rounding out a work as complete as Perrault's original.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perrault
This is a lovely book with beautiful illustrations of Perrault's classic fairytales. At the end of the book Philip spends at least a page briefly discussing each fairy tale and it's history. If you want more in depth criticism of fairytales, check out his text on Cinderella or works by Zipes or Warner. If you want a beautiful book of fairy tales, this is great. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The original version of the story is definitely not for kids
Everybody knows the story of Little Red Riding Hood, but what this illustrated version of the classic tale by Beni Montresor shows us is that we do not know the original story by Charles Perrault. That is not to say that readers of this version of "Little Red Riding Hood" will find anything particularly new in this version, beyond the idea that the title character is bringing a cake and a little pot of butter to her sick grandmother, but rather than certain elements that they have taken for granted lo these many years were not there in the beginning.

With his artwork Montresor lulls readers into a false sense of security, as we enjoy the familiar beginning of the story and see the little red hood that the little girl's grandmother has made for her. Most children will be amused by the dapper white suit that the wolf wears when he encounters Little Red Riding Hood in the forest (note that Perrault answers the question that many of us had when first becoming inquisitive enough to start poking holes in the story regarding why the wolf does not devour the little girl as soon as they meet in the woods). However, once the wolf replaces the grandmother in the bed and lures Little Red Riding Hood closer to his big teeth, young readers are going to quickly realize that this is not the familiar version of the story that they know.

Consequently one thing that can be said for sure is that Montresor's version of "Little Red Riding Hood" is not the first one that young children should learn. Let them become familiar with the sanitized version of the tale, which is par for the course these days (read very young children the original version of "Cinderella" where we learn what the step-sisters did to get their oversized feet to fit in the glass slipper, which will tell you why it was made of glass, and you could scar them for life). Perrault's story is much more in keeping with the grisly fairy tales of a couple of centuries back and Montresor's artwork plays up such elements, so be forewarned.

The introduction to this book is provided by the opera singer Luciana Pavarotti, who recalls how he thrilled to this tale being told by his grandfather. Pavarotti recalls how he identified with Little Red Riding Hood because he shared her fears. When you read this book you will understand why he could call this a violent, mysterious tale, especialy with Montresor's artwork to bring out those aspects of the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars The sad ending for Riding Hood is dramatic and revealing
Fans of artistic photo books for kids will find this an intriguing contemporary treatment of the Red Riding Hood classic. Here a little country girl faces urban and rural threats on her way to grandmother's house, only to find her grandmother has been replaced by an evil wolf. The sad ending for Riding Hood is dramatic and revealing, providing a realistic twist on the fairy tale.

3-0 out of 5 stars all of Sara Moon
why my country does not existing in your list?

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Red Riding Hood by Perrault, illus. by Sarah Moon
I enjoyed the story as Perrault wrote it, not as yet another alternate version with yet another happy ending. Red Riding Hood, also available in French as Le Petit Rouge, contains marvelous photos by Sarah Moon which lend an eerie, appropriately menacing mood to an already dark tale. It should be said, however, that this book is unsettling and is undoubtedly not one to share with your child as a bedtime story. ... Read more

Old favorites--"Tom Thumb," "Sleeping Beauty," "Puss in Boots," and "Bluebeard," among others--are joined by tales about fairies and giants, about wishes come true, and about why little girls with red hoods shouldn't walk through the woods alone. Lawrence adds insights into the life and times of Perrault, and stunning illustrations bring the tales vividly to life. ... Read more
