5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK
From Jack Pistella.
Having been involved in the Martial Arts for over 25 years and an instructor since 1984, I have had the opportunity to read many books on self-defense. What impressed most about your book is you have deleted the useless material that is included in most other books. The book is clear, concise and easy to read, especially to children. The detailed photographs also make it understandable for children who cannot yet read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and captivating!
What an exciting yet simple book this is! The text is easy for the 4 to 8 year old to understand and illustrations are clear, colorful, and will capture any small child who is intrigued with firefighters. I really enjoyed the author's note at the end of the book - don't miss that!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just another firetruck book
Lots and lots of interesting pictures not seen in other firefighting books - these focus on the fire fighters and the job they do rather than the trucks. This book also gently introduces the idea that fighting fires is DANGEROUS - fire fighters must continuously test the floors for weakness, do a primary search to locate people before the hoses ever get turned on, chop holes in the roof to let explosive gasses out, etc., which has opened up some very educational discussions with my sons. A valuable addition to our firefighting collection - one that gets read at least once a day.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son loved it!
Great pictures, great way for a 4 year old boy who swears he is going to be a fireman to learn his letters. Terrific!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great book!
If there was some way to give this book more than 5 stars, I would. My 5 year old son has read this book so many times that we both have it memorized. The illustrations are wonderful, the text easy enough for a beginning reader, yet challenging enough that my 8 year old neighbor loves it as well. He explains the unfamiliar terms in the Author's Notes in the back of the book. What a fantastic book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Firefighters A to Z
Written by a trained fireman, this exciting alphabet book realistically takes the reader through a fire fighter's day as it goes through the alphabet. Its rhymes are unforced, written in natural language. Firefighting vocabulary is explained. The illustrations capture the excitement of firefighting. Includes an illustration of equipment and further informative fire fighting facts in an author's note. This book is sure to become a favorite. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Elementary School Librarian Reviews
I have read this book to my primary grade students since it was published. It presents facts about gun safety clearly, without taking sides. It is amazing how many discussions it provokes from the students. It is a great starting place for teaching safety, particularly gun safety, to young students. It should be a "must have" in any elementary school media center.

5-0 out of 5 stars Non Judgemental and Technically Accurate. Good message!
I like the fact that this book is non-judgemental regarding guns. It states the facts of the situation clearly and succinctly. My eight year old son had no trouble reading it and understanding the content of the text. Use of words and examples is good. I appreciate the fact that guns were not referred to as weapons. This is consistent with firearms training protocols for non-military personnel One technical inaccuarcy was noted. The cut-away illustration of the pistol referred to "bullets" in the pistol magazine. They are properly called "cartridges". But this is a minor detail. The safety message at the end, while thorough, was too wordy to be easily remembered. But it is not inconsistent with the Eddie Eagle Safety Message of "Stop! Don't Touch! Leave the Area! Tell an Adult!" Overall - very nicely done! David G. Coy, CMA, CPA Associate Proessor - Accoutancy Adrian College Adrian, Michigan I am an NRA Certified Firearms Instructor ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was a great way to teach children to be safe.
I thought this book was a great way to introduce children to fire safety. The pictures are all photographs of real life situations that children can relate to. Each page discusses a different aspect of fire safety. They warn children to be careful but also explain how we use fire every day. This book and others like it inform children about fire in a language they can understand. This book is easy to read and the tougher words include a phonetic spelling to make reading easier. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE VERY BEST PONY PAL BOOKS!
I loved Stolen Ponies because it was about Acorn and he is a very cute pony and he plays tricks on Tommy and Mike. Anna owns Acorn and loves him very much. And in the beginning, Tommy and Mike keep on copying Anna because they come into the paddock and Lulu comes up behind them and blows her Pony Pal whistle in their ears! I have 33 Pony Pal books and they all were GREAT but this one is one of my favorites! The girls always outsmart Tommy & Mike in all 44 books! I recommend this book to girls who love ponies and adventures!

Book Description

Fires are scary. The appearance of firefighters can be scary, too. In Fire Night! twelve-year-old Katy Wong demonstrates that fire education pays off. Katy applies what she has learned to overcome her fears and make the right decisions.

Not long ago, a newspaper advertisement made me aware of just how terrifying a firefighter in full protective gear can be to a small child. Until then, I had never realized how scary I looked and sounded. I thought that if I were a child, frightened by smoke and fire, the last person I would trust would be a faceless monster, breathing like a nightmare creature. But I know that hiding from this "monster" will ultimately endanger the lives of children and the lives of the firefighters working to save them. Approximately 1,200 children die in fires in their homes each year. I sincerely hope that reading Fire Night! will help to educate your children and reduce this staggering number.

Education is the key. By sharing this book w! ith your children, you will motivate them to listen carefully when fire safety is addressed at school. They may even ask to visit me at the fire house, where they are always welcome. (Roy A. Davis, World Record Holder, Combat Challenge, Tacoma Fire Department, Tacoma, Washington) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every home with children must have this book!
Every week, I read aloud to third and fourth graders at Hoover Elementary School in Indio, CA. I volunteer for this as part of the Rolling Reader program which gives free books to students IF a volunteer will commit himself or herself to consistent reading. I will do anything to give children an incentive to read, for I firmly believe that the future of our USA depends on what we, as a society, do in the present. While there are many wonderful children's books to read, there are also many bad ones. I have lamented the fact that too many of the book writers try to get on the level of the kids by lowering the standards. In essence, the kids have slang and bad habits fortified by many writers. This is similar to the fad today that people should be friends to their kids instead of parents. We can see the results of this tunnel vision in so many kids not really being well educated. And so it was with delight that I discovered "Fire Night" and other children's books written by Monica Driscoll Beatty and beautifully illustrated by Christie Allan-Piper. Mrs. Beatty obviously believes, as I do, that children need to be taught and have their interest for learning accelerated. In Fire Night, children are entertained by a very human interest story to which they can relate -- children alone in a home when it catches fire. Mrs. Beatty has discovered that many children are frightened by firefighters because of their alien-like uniforms and masks. Often the children run and hide instead of letting the firefighter rescue them. By creating an exciting story about 12 year-old Katy Wong and her younger brothers and sisters, she keeps the readers (or listeners, if an adult is doing the reading) captivated by the minute-to-minute description of one fearful night. Every member of the third and fourth graders (32 in all) paid close attention as I read this marvelous book to them. I even asked questions as I read and the answers came tumbling out from the youngsters. There is no slang in the book and no bad grammar as is often used in too many other books. In addition to the story, there is a full page of fire facts --what to do before a fire starts and what to do during a fire. The youngsters even get beautiful pictures, along with descriptions of the firefighters' equipment. Finally as a lagniappe, the children learn that under one of the scary uniforms of a firefighter who comes crawling through a second-story window to rescue them is a young Black woman, thus proving that heroes come in both genders and all races. I recommend this book as a must for all homes with children. And while you are ordering one, why not get two extra ones for your local school or library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly Written and Illustrated
I must say that I was apprehensive about a book about smokejumping. My 3 and 5 year old sons are the progeny of former smokejumper parents. They really know smokejumping! Since they loved Firefighters A to Z I knew we had to get this book, though.
Needless to say we weren't disappointed. The illustrations are large, brilliant, and true to life in their portrayal of the work of the smokejumper. The text is accurate, simple, yet elegantly descriptive. Oh yes! And the kids love to count along with the pictures and text. My son brought this one (proudly) to preschool and it quickly became such a favorite amongst the kids that the the teacher had to purchase her own copy for the school. ... Read more

Book Description

Where’s My Puppy? is a charming story meant to entertain as it gently instructs young children to stay out of danger by not wandering from their "safety zone". The story is about Scruffy, an adorable little puppy who escapes his backyard home one sunny afternoon and becomes lost. After his family’s long and frantic search, assisted by neighbors and Police Officer Kathy, Scruffy is returned home to a joyous reunion. Through this loss and rescue, Where’s My Puppy? offers a subtle message to young children to stay safely within the watchful eye of their parents, even while playing close to home. This book was inspired by the real life story of five-year-old Brittany Fish who was abducted in Syracuse, NY on April 24, 2004, while riding a scooter near her home. A massive search by police and volunteers turned up only her discarded scooter. Nearly twenty-four hours later, Brittany was miraculously found alive. She was discovered under a tarp in an abandoned warehouse, bound in duct tape. The Fish case has been featured twice on Fox TV’s, America’s Most Wanted and once on the America’s Most Wanted radio show. Where’s My Puppy? was authored by Brittany’s Aunt, Linda Slifka, in hopes that the story might keep other children safe from harm. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Non-threatening way to teach caution about strangers.
This book was wonderful. Talking to children about strangers can be difficult. You want them to be cautious but don't want to frighten them. How do you tell them that not all strangers are bad and still warn them that some are dangerous? Get this book - it is a great, non-threatening way to teach your children to be wary of strangers. Christopher Robin explains to Pooh & Piglet that most strangers are nice but some aren't. Since you can't tell which are which, you never talk to any strangers. The best point, I thought, was how Christopher Robin explained that strangers are not people who looked strange but are people you don't know. That's a hard point to get across to kids. At the end, is a list of "Christopher Robin's Stay Safe Rules." I plan on buying a copy of this book for everyone I know who has kids, that's how great I think it is. ... Read more
