5-0 out of 5 stars A fabulous book
I read this for a book report at school, and I loved it! Silver dreams of getting a dog for her thirteenth birthday, because she has been lonely ever since her parents and baby sister died in a car accident. But her grandfather, who she now lives with, tells her that she'll get a dog over his dead body. I won't tell the end, but it has a good ending-so read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great story loved the "power of love and faith" theme!
Great somewhat Christian book. Silver is like every 12 year old girl (i know being one myself)except without the makeup and boys outlook (yes finally!). All Silver wants is a dog I remember before I got one wanting one soooo bad!. Won't tell the end but loved it anyway!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter's favorite book.
My daughter Kristen loved reading this book. We even purchased a copy from the publisher to give to Kristen last Christmas. Kristen would love to write to Linda High about Hound Heaven. Does the author have an e-mail address? Or, if Linda High reads this message could you please contact Kristen at mygirlkns@aol.com. Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is about Silver,Dud,Rose and Silver's determanation & dog
I think Rose is like a barbie & as for Dud, he is part of the interesting part of the story. Silver is the one who makes the story seem real. Without Silver I don't think I whould have read the whole story.Linda, you are a excelent writer. I love this book. I am buying this book.I love it. Most books don't seem as real as you make them sound. Jennifer -10 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Kids Facing a Death in the Family
When Molly and Will's grandmother comes to live with them, she brings her canary, Vivi. Though Vivi soon dies, Granny helps the children understand the loss, and this in turn, prepares them for dealing with Granny's death a short time later.

This is a beautifully illustrated and well-written book for parents, teachers and counselors in helping kids understand the realities of death. It is factual and forthright!

I have used this book with my own kids and have used it often in school classrooms and with groups of grieving children. It is one of the best out there. ... Read more

Book Description

It's not easy having your own father for a teacher, but that's only one of twelve-year-old Nikki's problems. Her beloved dog has died, leaving a gaping hole in her life, which is thrown into further turmoil by the arrival of her long-lost eccentric grandmother from Australia. Life is pretty tense around the house, and Nikki relaxes by taking long rides and visiting a secluded pond inhabited by a rare species of turtle.

Things do begin to get brighter when she receives a runt sheepdog as a birthday present, whom she names Lucky. The dog flourishes under her care, and she trains him to compete in agility trials. She eventually becomes friendly with her grandmother as they work together to prepare Lucky for the trials, and she begins to tell Nikki tales of her environmental activism.

When Nikki finds out that developers are planning to fill in the pond to build a housing estate, wiping out the turtles' habitat. Nikki remembers her grandmother's stories and decides to take a dangerous stand on the animals' behalf. But will she have the support of her family?

Hubcaps and Puppies is not only a story about the protection of the environment but also about a young girl learning to appreciate the lessons that her family can teach her. ... Read more

Book Description

"The book shows how, for those who are blind, attitudes about blindness play an important part in the success of everything in life.Laurie has to work through her own attitudes about herself when others treat her differently because she is blind....I plan to give each of my nieces a copy of the book for Christmas. It will help the younger members of our family grow up with a better philosophy about blind people."

2-0 out of 5 stars Just Treat me Like 'm Normal!
Although written about a 12-year-old girl, presumably for other pre-teens, this book presents several serious themes and adult issues.Although blind, Laurie considers herself capable around the house and at school. But things start to disintegrate when she enters middle school: her 12-year-old dog is in pain; her father may lose his job; a school bully makes her life miserable; and a new teacher does not know how to treat her with dignity.Gradually watching her self-confidence erode, young Laurie faces fears of death--for her pet and her beloved grandmother.

The story gets a bit preachy in places, as the author tries to incorporate many valid ideas to educate the public at large re the handicapped. Can the sighted learn from the blind? It's a rather heavy tale at times, but offers hope for creative conflict resolution. The Handicapped must be
proactive in an assertive but non-aggressive manner, and not expect Society in general to read their mind. Will someone dear to Laurie die, as she learns valuable lessons of life?

4-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I found this book was really great with happy and sad moments Laurie Moss, who has been blind since birth, spends her time helping her dog, Jessie, since she's sick. She was determined not to give up on her bestfriend. ... Read more

Book Description

It’s Jamie and Matt’s first Christmas since Ma’s death, and Matt is doing his best to keep her traditions. He chides Pa into decorating the tree and reminds him of Ma’s story of the animals’ Christmas miracle — their power to speak at midnight. Then Matt and his beloved Labrador retriever, Sara, set out to hang suet balls for the birds, just as Ma would have done.

Suddenly a hungry bear surprises them, mauling Sara. On top of that, snow has started falling hard and Matt is lost in the woods. But it is Christmas Eve near midnight — just the right time for a miracle. The Promise is a riveting story about the power to heal and about having faith — even when it leads where you don’t want to follow.

I read The Promise as a chapter book to my children (ages 3 to 7 yrs) at bedtime, around Christmas this year. I have never seen my children more anxious to get to bed than that week or two that it took to finsih the story. I was as interested as they were to find out how Sara, Jamie and Matt would make out on this Enchanted Christmas Eve. Great Story! ... Read more
