Book Description

To celebrate Peter's birthday, Frederick Warne is publishing new editions of all 23 of Potter's original tales, which take the very first printings of Potter's works as their guide. The aim of these editions is to be as close as possible to Beatrix Potter's intentions while benefiting from modern printing and design techniques.

The colors and details of the watercolors in the volumes are reproduced more accurately than ever before, and it has now been possible to disguise damage that has affected the artwork over the years. Most notably, The Tale of Peter Rabbit restores six of Potter's original illustrations. Four were sacrificed in 1903 to make space for illustrated endpapers, and two have never been used before. Of course, Beatrix Potter created many memorable children's characters, including Benjamin Bunny, Tom Kitten, Jemima Puddle-duck and Jeremy Fisher. But whatever the tale, both children and adults alike can be delighted by the artistry in Potter's illustrations, while they also enjoy a very good read. Because they have always been completely true to a child's experience, Potter's 23 books continue to endure.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Tale of Mr. Tod
Beatrix Potter's tales have often revolved around endearing characters such as Tom Kitten, Jeremy Fisher, or Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle. Sometimes the main characters have been of the mischievous type like Squirrel Nutkin, Hunca Munca or Samuel Whiskers. Well, in "The Tale of Mr. Tod", the main characters, Mr. Tod and Tommy Brock, are two thoroughly disagreeable and unpleasant creatures. Mr. Tod has foxy whiskers and is of a wandering habit. The other animals either cannot bear him or are frightened of him. He has several different houses but is rarely found home. However, his houses are not always empty, for Tommy Brock is prone to moving in without Mr. Tod's permission. Tommy Brock is a fat, waddling badger with a horrible grinning face and a habit of digging things up. One day he pays a call to old Mr. Bouncer, Benjamin Bunny's father. Today he is in charge of looking after the young, while Benjamin and his wife Flopsy are out. Unfortunately after conversing with the badger and smoking a very strong cabbage leaf cigar, the old rabbit falls asleep and Tommy Brock makes off with the rabbit babies. When Benjamin and Flopsy return they find their young gone and Benjamin at once goes out to track down Tommy Brock. Along the way he enlists the help of his brother-in-law, Peter Rabbit. Of course, they are not the only ones after the terrible badger. It seems that yet again he has set up house in one of Mr. Tod's residences and the fox, who is not in the best of moods this day, discovers the badger asleep in his bed... There are not many color pictures in this book, but there are many black and white illustrations in the style of woodcuts. Of course the story is extremely interesting and suspensful. "The Tale of Mr. Tod" is a longer story than some of the author's other tales. Also, there is more narration than dialogue and the language is early twentieth century, so this story may be more suitable for older children. Parents and children should not pass up this lesser known tale by a very talented storyteller and illustrator. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse
Children who love animals of all kinds, and especially insects, will love the Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse. Mrs. Thomasina Tittlemouse is rather obsessed with cleanliness. She is constantly sweeping and dusting. Unfortunately for her there are a variety of unwelcome guests that invade her tidy home: a beetle, a ladybug, a spider, a butterfly, a group of bumblebees who have made a nest in her storeroom without permission, and a most unpleasant toad named Mr. Jackson who never wipes his feet and creates a terrible mess. However there is a happy ending to this story. The watercolors are beautiful---I particularly like the one of Miss Butterfly tasting the sugar. If your young ones have a dislike for creepy crawly creatures, then this story might not be for them, but I have always found Beatrix Potter's tales delightful and unique, and The Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse none the less so. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The magic of Beatrix Potter
"Appley Dapply's Nursery Rhymes," by Beatrix Potter, is a great example of the whimsical charm of this great children's author. The rhymes are accompanied by Potter's whimsical, richly detailed illustrations of her animal characters. A typical rhyme: "Gravy and potatoes / In a good brown pot-- / Put them in the oven, / and serve them hot!"

In this book we meet such characters as old Mr. Pricklepin the hedgehog, and a dapper guinea pig. And in Potter's version, the old woman who lived in a shoe is a mouse. A fun, timeless book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Appley Dapply's Nursery Rhymes
Mother Goose is not the only one who knows how to write nursery rhymes! This book is a collection of seven charming nursery rhymes by Beatrix Potter. Each one deals with animals such as little mice, rabbits, a hedgehog, a mole, a pig and a guinea pig. The paintings are as usual quaint and lovely. A wonderful companion book is "Cecily Parsley's Nursery Rhymes" also by this talented author and illustrator. I always love Ms. Potter's books and this collection of rhymes is a great way to introduce young children to her magical world of intriguing human-like animal characters. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars tale's of childhood
My dad read this title to me when I was very young. Some of my best memories with him are sitting in his lap early in the morning before anyone else was up. I was not always as healthy as I am now; I was always sick with something. I would creep into his lap while he was reading. I remember he'd pull out the "Rabbit book" or the "frog book", depending on the mood I was in. And then he'd read aloud to me while I stared at the beautiful pictures.

There are few books I can say the same for. But this book will make standing memories for children. These were dad's and my stories, and I'll never forget the mornings we spent reading them.

3-0 out of 5 stars A disappointing remake of classic stories
The text in this book differs slightly from the original, and is condensed onto large pages with less pictures. In effect, when reading this book to my child, he wanted to "see the picture", but there was none. We have returned to using the original version which illustrates much more of the action.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful eye-pleasing edition
This edition of the classic has large pages with beautiful drawings of the rabbits and other creatures. What is especially nice about the text is that it introduces higher-level vocabulary words in an exciting adventure story suitable to listeners as young as 3 or 4. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Aaah!
These stories are NOT what I would have chosen for my 2 year old! They all have something unnecessarily frightening or unpleasant. I skip those parts the best I can when I read it. Unfortunately my child really likes this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Contains 13 Stories With Original Illustrations
Contains all the popular Beatrix Potter Stories, plus a few less known. Contents are The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Tailor of Gloucester, The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin, The Tale of Bejamin Bunny, The Tale of Two Bad Mice, The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-winkle, The Pie and the Patty-Pan, The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher, The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit, The Story of Miss Moppet, The Tale of Tom Kitten, The Tale of Jemima Puddle-duck and The Roly-Poly Pudding

The book has two or three original illustrations on each page, so Peter Rabbit only takes 9 pages. A pretty good collection for the price -- though some of these stories are pretty forgettable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Child's first lesson in business?
Ginger and Pickles, a cat and dog who run a dry goods store are failing in business by giving unlimited credit. Their sales are enormous but there is never any money in the till. They restrain their natural desire to eat their rodent customers and sustain themselves by consuming inventory. Finally, they are forced to close the store when they cannot pay the annual tax bill. The store is later reopened by an enterprising chicken who gets a little flustered counting change, but nevertheless brings the story to a happy ending. ... Read more

My son loved Peter Rabbit as a preschooler and now my toddler daughter does also. So I chose this one. I'm glad I did! This is a must for any child who just loves these characters. Each story is just as interesting and as cute as the one before it. ... Read more
