Book Description

This new and expanded edition of Dog Training for Kids gives youngsters the skills they need to make better citizens of their canine companions, while strengthening that all-important human/animal bond. This "home study course" is based on the ability of the child to teach a dog basic obedience as well as some captivating tricks, without having to depend on parental help or expensive equipment. There are beautifully detailed and humorously illustrated instructions on Heeling, Sit Stay, Stand Stay, Down Stay and Come When Called. Counseling is given on seven common but persistent problems; Jumping Up On People, Chewing, Biting, Excessive Barking, Stealing Food and Problem Housebreaking. On the recreational side, there are descriptions of some wonderful tricks which all youngsters can teach their dogs. For those who feel that a future career in dogs would be satisfying and rewarding, Ms. Benjamin presents an overview of eight occupations to jog the reader's interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book on Dog Training
This book might be old, but it is very helpful. I use it to train all my dogs and some of them are very well behaved. (It even works with stubborn breeds!). DTFK tells about housebreaking, obedience training, tricks, and problem solving. The methods work and the dogs like them. If you get a dog, please buy this book too. Read it cover to cover before you begin with your dog's training, though.

1-0 out of 5 stars out of date techniques
The latest version of this book is from 1988 and the book uses lots of traditional, but largely out of date corrections that have been replaced in most obedience training circles with postitive training techniques. I have elected to return the book instead of having my niece learn these dog obedience techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Hoot!
I've read 4 of the Junie B. Jones series to my 5 year old daughter. She loves them all. She's especially proud that she's listening to a "chapter book" that takes more than one night's reading to finish.

Of the books we've read so far this one is the funniest. It's just laugh out loud funny, for both kids and adults. I heartily recommend it. Barbara Parks has a wonderful way with children's dialog. It's easy to inflect a 5 year old's enthusiam into her voice as you're reading it but it's never sickly sweet or over precocious. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series just as much as my daughter.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Guessing This Ending
Congratulation Barbara Park, Junie B Jones Smells Something Fishy
is a great book for both young and old. I thoroughly enjoyed this witty book about a spunky kindergartener who is trying to find the perfect pet for pet day. The ending was so unpredictable, I still laugh when I think about it. This clever and easy to read book makes it wonderful for your new readers to grasp and want to read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Junie B Jones Smells Something Fishy (#12)
Junie B's class is having pet day, but she can't take Tickle, her dog. Her grandma "steals" Sparkle. (The fish that she brought to Junie B's house.) Will Junie B find another pet in time? Read it to find out. I have two of this one!

3-0 out of 5 stars Junie B. Jones has a pet day problem!
Junie B. Jones is both upset and angry about Pet Day in Room Nine. On Pet Day, you can bring in your pet--unless it's a dog or cat. Unfortunately for Junie B., she has a dog and can't bring it in. Now she must get a good pet to bring in before the big day. However, Junie B.'s idea of a good pet to bring in is a racoon and dead fish!

This Junie B. Jones book was just "okay." Nothing wonderful, nothing terrible. In most of the Junie B. Jones books, there's humor on every page. In this one, there was just a little humor in every chapter. However, I really loved the surprise ending. There's no way I could have seen that coming!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read!
Unfortunately, the Junie B. Jones series is not expanding fast enough to suit our family's taste. We've already read them all (twice) and are impatiently waiting for Barbara Parks to continue the Junie saga. Though we enjoyed all her books, this was our favorite. The humor is truly delightful, and we've given it as a gift on a few occasions. After sharing the Junie series, my daughter has discovered a love of reading. Although Junie is recommended for older ages, the series is perfect for kindergarten and first grade students. ... Read more

This is a cute little book for beginning readers. Unlike olderprimers that had such a slow story line that children got bored andquit, this story moves along, makes kids wonder, (who is Stanley?, and why is the boy fussing at him?),and also has a funny and realistic scenario. 1-0 out of 5 stars Disgusting
This book makes light of a serious subject without any true aim or benefit. Shame on all of you for calling this thing good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entrepreneurial spirit alive & well in Beloved Dearly
How to describe this book? If you're under 13, think ABC Saturday Morning's "Recess" morphed with Nickelodeon humor (more sharper edged). If you're over 35, think "The Little Rascals" for a new millenium. I'm not doing it justice, but that's the best way to explain the kids in "Beloved Dearly." These are distinct and memorable kids, and out of scraps, odds and ends, and sheer will, they transform an abandoned lot (and their own lives) into a venture (and adventure) with a real (albeit moneymaking) purpose - to help the grieving children/pet-owners achieve closure with a funeral, including a viewing, eulogy, mourners, and custom-made coffins.

Ernie's the con man whose mind never stops working. Swimming Pool is tough but heartfelt as the girl who cries over the pet funerals Ernie stages. Dusty is the artist who pours his soul and his creative energy into the functional artwork (not mere coffins) that celebrate the lives of the dearly departed pets. And a whole rich cast of wacky characters (mostly kids but a couple of adults too) make childhood a whole lot cooler than you remember (if you're a grownup) or may be currently experiencing (if you're not).

Mind you, this was a stage play that Doug Cooney was asked to turn into a book, and so the dialogue is amazing, fluid, fun to read and fun to say aloud (and hear read aloud, for that matter - an audiobook version is on its way as of this writing, with a full cast of kids clearly having fun in their roles).

There's nothing vanilla in this sixteen scoop/seven different toppings/whipped cream with a cherry on top/sprinkles *and* nuts sundae of a book. It's inventive, unpredictable, engaging, and fun ...and touches upon several deeper themes without ever slowing down the pace or the language. The relationships between Ernie and his dad, and Swimming Pool and her brother, will tug at you long after the story ends, when you're no longer diverted by the snappy and clever dialogue and the subplots have time to sink in.

Just before she read this, my 10 year old daughter woke up one morning to find that her beloved crayfish (brought home from a 5th grade science "observation" project and tenderly cared for for weeks) had died in the night. She was utterly torn apart, just as much as if it had been a small furry mammal. Oddly enough, reading this book (even though it was a humorous look at pet funerals) helped her because it honored a whole host of "pets", not just the ones that look cute as babies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cooney Blockbuster
Doug Cooney bursts into the world of children's literature with his delightful story of love and loss. The pet funeral business is booming and characters like Swimming Pool, Ernie, and the dead bunny bring humor and warmth to his tale. Five thumbs up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Move aside,Harry Potter!
My sons, who are 9 and 10 years old, really loved this book. They laughed out loud through many of the chapters. They are not the most enthusiastic readers in town, so it was great to see them so engaged. It was also fun to hear them discussing what they had read and their take on childrens literature. They are fairly burned out on Harry Potter, and the Lemony Snicket books. The Beloved Dearly is by far their favorite book of all time, or so they say. Now we just have to wait for Mr. Cooneys next book to come out.Could you ask him to try to have it ready in time for our long flight to Orlando this June?

5-0 out of 5 stars "Beloved Dearly" is the best book I have read in years!
This book addresses children's grief issues in a personal and intimate tone. Adults and children of all ages can learn from this insightful expression of love and loss. Cooney's use of dramatic language brings color and passion to every chapter. The book is inspiring and a joy to read. I highly recommend it! ... Read more

Steven Kellogg's award-winning picture book The MysteriousTadpole, first published in 1977, is back with wonderful new illustrationsand additional "nuances of character, sequence, and plot" in this fabulous25th-anniversary edition. The story begins when Uncle McAllister brings a "weebit of Scotland"--a tadpole to be precise--to Louis for his birthday. Delighted,Louis names him Alphonse and brings him to school for show-and-tell. A diet ofcheeseburgers allows the creature to grow by leaps and bounds, and he soonoutgrows his jar, the kitchen sink, and the bathtub. Finally, when the highschool swim team learns of Alphonse's presence in their pool the hard way, UncleMcAllister gets a call: "'Oh, the wee tadpole?' he said. 'Why, he came from thelake nearby. It's the one folks call Loch Ness.'" Louis's ingenuity (he takes ona paper route to pay for his pet's burgers, and that of his friend the librarian(she thinks they can use the aquatic Alphonse to find pirate treasure and usethe money to build him his own swimming pool) are heartwarming and hilarious.Children who are attached to a pet will completely relate to Louis's devotion tohis unusual new friend. Kellogg's luminous illustrations of the ever-expandingmonster and bewildered townspeople are expressive, often hysterical, and full oftiny details that demand many rereadings. A treat! 5-0 out of 5 stars A monster mash
Everyone in my generation has (or should have) a favorite Steven Kellogg book. I think the kind of Kellogg book you love says a lot about the kind of person you are. For example, I'd probably have my doubts about being stuck in an elevator with anyone who professes a love for Kellogg's "How Much is a Million" books. And as for the person who gravitates towards the "Pinkerton" series, that's the kind of human being I'd be comfortable sharing a cup of cocoa with. Now myself, I'm torn. The vote really falls between Kellogg's fascinating "Island of the Skog" and "The Mysterious Tadpole". Both books are fabulous forgotten classics. But "The Mysterious Tadpole" is better known and perhaps deservedly so.

Louis has just had a birthday, and his eccentric Uncle McAlister has sent him the best present ever. A small lovable tadpole arrives in the mail, and Louis sets about making his new pet at home. Contrary to expectations, however, the tadpole (named, curiously, Alphonse) grows by leaps and bounds. When Louis's parents protest that Alphonse is too large to keep in the home, Louis improvises by placing his pet in the Junior High's swimming pool. But when even that clever plan goes awry, it's up to Louise and the local librarian Miss Seevers to concoct a plan to keep Alphonse happy and free.

Perhaps it was this book, read to me countless times in my youth, that is responsible for me becoming the librarian I am today. Miss Seevers isn't your frumpy hair in a bun, glasses on her nose, shushing librarian either. She's a smart witty woman who helps Louis to save the day. In fact all the characters in this book are imbued with a certain amount of pep and verve. Louis is just the kind of kid who wants to keep his tadpole/loch ness monster safe. And Alphonse, though he never says a word, is a child's ideal pet. Imagine it. A big friendly adorable brown-eyed monster that would like nothing more than to eat some cheeseburgers, romp, and play fetch. As for the story itself, it's got it all. A funny plot, a memorable solution, and a sly surprise ending with a whole different story suggested. The book is also filled with Kellogg's wry understatements. In this book, Louis's teacher Mrs. Shelbert has asked him to bring Alphonse in continually so that the class could see how a tadpole becomes a frog. Soon enough Alphonse is romping around the room, roughly five children on his back and more clammering to climb aboard, paper airplanes flying, and desks askew. As a disapproving teacher looks on, the text merely says, "One day Mrs. Shelbert decided that Alphonse was not turning into an ordinary frog. She asked Louis to stop bringing him to school". Understatement at its finest.

Kellogg's illustrations really give this book the extra little nudge it needed to cross over from "merely good" to "fantastic". Alphonse, for one, could not be cuter. Those big brown puppy dog eyes would inspire you to buy him a million hamburgers, if you could. Kellogg is also adept at filling each scene in the book with tiny amusing details. For example, when Louis smuggles Alphonse into the Junior High, you can see the name of the school is the "Jesse James Junior High School". Two masked and armed statues hold their guns on either side of the entrance. At another point, Louis thinks horribly of his pet being placed in a zoo, while a dreaming Alphonse pictures himself as tiny next to the largest cheeseburger in the world. The book is filled with delights such as these. My personal favorite is perhaps the most controversial section of the book. When Miss Seevers proposes locating some sunken pirate treasure sunk in the city's harbor, there is an image of Miss Seevers and Louis imagining the sinking of the ship. A huge ship (named the Poison Prune) sinks in the harbor, filled with nasty evil pirates. The cause of the sinkage? A single Native American, smiling, shoots arrows into the hull. I love it. The Native American is obviously in command of the situation while the pirates, for all their guns and nasty looks, are bound for the briny deep. It's a great moment, though I've no doubt there's the possibility that people might find the scene offensive. Frankly, it's not, but you'll just have to take my word on this one until you read the book yourself.

So there you have it. One of the world's best books written by one of the world's best author/illustrators and virtually forgotten today. If you can get your hands on a copy of this book, do so immediately. It's a fine piece of well wrought literature, enough to make you wish there had been a sequel. If this book had been written today, I've no doubt that there would have been. As it stands, however, this book is the one and only. And it's well worth any price you could pay.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Tadpole which didn't become a frog!
This story was a favorite of mine as a child, and now I have the oppourtunity to read it to my own kids.

Louis recives a tadpole in a jar for his birthday one year from his eccentric uncle in Scotland, who happens to live near Loch Ness. Louis named his tadpole Alphonse, fed him cheeseburgers, taught him to fetch, do other tricks, and Alphonse becomes a great pet. However, he has grown too big for the apartment in which Louis and his parents live and Louis must think of something to help Alphonse have a place to live or he'll have to go to the zoo!

With the help of the local librarian, and Alphonse, Louis comes up with a plan to raise money to buy the parking lot near his building for a big swiming pool for Alphonse, and all the neighborhood kids to swim and play in.

A happy ending, just in time for Louis's next birthday, and another mysterious present from Uncle McAlister! Great for kids ages four to seven.

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy Birthday, Alphonse.....
Louis' Uncle McAllister lives in Scotland and every year sends Louis the best birthday present. And this year was no different, a tadpole, Louis names Alphonse. But it soon becomes apparent that Alphonse is not your normal, everyday tadpole and definitely not turning into a frog. He soon outgrows his jar, then the kitchen sink, and bathtub. Louis sneaks him into the school swimming pool during summer vacation, and that works out just fine until fall when school opens. In a panic Louis consults Miss Seevers, the librarian. Librarians always have all the answers, and Miss Seevers doesn't let him down. With a phone call to Scotland, a little research, and a lot of ingenuity, Louis and Miss Severs find a clever solution and happily-ever-after ending to their problem..... First published twenty-five years ago, Steven Kellogg's creative classic, The Mysterious Tadpole, is as fresh and entertaining today as it was back in 1977. Mr Kellogg has given his new illustrations a bold and bright facelift, and tweaked the text a bit, but the engaging and fun-filled story with its hilarious twist at the end, is still sure to capture the imagination and warm your heart. Perfect for youngsters 3-7, The Mysterious Tadpole is a timeless treasure to share with friends and family now, and future generations in the years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite Steven Kellogg book..
I've been a Steven Kellogg fan for a long time, and this is one of the books that won me over.

Imagine being a small boy, say 6 or 7, and having an uncle from Scotland bring you an unusual tadpole for your birthday...then it doesn't turn into a frog!

The Mysterious Tadpole is a fun romp through life with a pet that grows and grows and keeps on growing.

The story is engaging, the illustrations are brilliant, and children and adults both love reading this book.

Give is a try!

5 stars all the way!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Positive Introduction to the Subject of Death
This book is a treasure in our home. It has helped enormously to explain death to my children. The book provides support for statements such as: the dead person's spirit can remain with you, you can look forward to powerful "visits" by the dead person's spririt, but the dead always stay dead since their body is gone, "just like the Angel Cat." When I told my four year old son that my 94 year old grandmother had passed away, he asked to read the Angel Cat that night. I even spoke of this book at her funeral!

5-0 out of 5 stars I Found This Very Helpful for Myself
I'm 22 and I still find comfort in reading this book when I think of lost ones. This book is not just for kids!

4-0 out of 5 stars Helps the very young child understand the death of a pet.
Many children have experienced the death of a pet. This can be their first experience with grief and can help shape how they deal with later experiences with loss. This illustrated book deals with a child's feelings about the loss of a beloved pet. Mr. Rogers is sensitive but clear and direct when he explains the finality of death. This book can also be used to initiate a conversation about the death of a relative in a less threatening way. The parent may want to read the book as well to help explain it to the child.

3-0 out of 5 stars a very direct approach
While I found this book to be a good tool to discuss the loss of a pet with my 7 year old. I was a bit shocked at the directness of the issue at hand. It did bring forward the emotions that we were all feeling with the loss. This book however, does allow the child to greive and know that what they are feeling is "normal" and crying is okay. This was well done in the typical manner of "Mr. Rogers" he got me through alot as a child and now is helping me with my children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good book about death (and alfie)
I am fond of this book because it incorporates death as part of a continuum of events in a child's life, instead of placing it front and center in a "the-moral-of-the-story-is" type of typical children's story.

Alfie's neighbor loves his old cat, the cat dies, the neighbor is very sad, the neighbor stays sad, and Alfie and friends and family decide to plan a surprise birthday party for the neighbor. Then there are lots of details about the party, including the purchase of presents, the making of the cake, and even getting a new kitten for the neighbor. Then, ta-dum, everybody yells SURPRISE! And the neighbor is happier, and the kitten turns out to be pretty cool, and the party is fun, and even though everybody remembers the old cat fondly, the new cat becomes a part of their life.

I like this approach and so, apparently, do my kids. I've been trying to find good books for kids about death, and this has turned out to be a favorite. And the pictures are *adorable,* I just wanted to reach right in and pinch Alfie's red cheeks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful Alfie story
We (my 3-year old son and 2-year old daughter and I) loved Hughes' "All About Alfie," and her story "Dogger," and this book is a wonderful next step for us, especially my son. There's a bit more text per page, and more mature subject matter (the death of a neighbor's pet) which helps ensure it will grow with him. (I was worried that he'd lose the wonderful role model he has in Alfie!) The only negative is that since the stories so completely capture Alfie's point of view, Annie Rose is a little flat, and my daughter is not as engaged by her. Alfie stories are a great example of how to be caring toward your siblings. The illustrations showing a happy family without a spotless house (it looks comfy and lived in!) make me want to give Hughes a hug!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Children's Author
Shirley Hughes is a wonderful author who uses beautiful illustrations and a quiet writing style in her children's books. My toddler loves her book, Chatting, as well as other Hughes titles. I highly recommend sharing Alfie with your children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars See the Wonders of America.....
"When I was a boy, I didn't see much of America. My parents were homebodies, so I stayed home. But when I grew up, I knew I was different. I wanted to see America. So I bought a little green Beetle and in it I put a small box of clothes, a small bag of food, and my dog, Tulip. And we left Ohio and went across America. This is what we saw:" Inspired by author, Cynthia Rylant's own cross country trip, Tulip Sees America takes the reader on a marvelous and evocative journey from the farms of Iowa, and the vast skies of Nebraska, through windy Wyoming, the glorious mountains of Colorado, the beautiful and mysterious desert of Nevada, to Oregon, with its towering, rugged cliffs and boundless, blue ocean. Ms Rylant's eloquent and engaging text is poetic and complemented by Lisa Desimini's bold and vibrant landscapes that capture America in all its splendor. Together word and art send imaginations soaring as they take young travelers on a joyous and fascinating adventure. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, Tulip Sees America is a quiet little treasure the entire family can share, and a wonderful addition to all home bookshelves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Man's Best Four-Legged Friends By:GFS Grade 5
Shelter Dogs Amazing Stories of Adopted Strays, a voluminous, phenominal book provides you and exponentually heart-warming feeling. This awesome book holds eight incredible, fantastic narratives - each about a dog, its new family and a chalanging task they have to complete. Ivan, Joey, Zoro, and Kirby each have a differant implausible story. In Kirby's story something strange happens to his faithful owner. For three days he goes without food, water, and someone to take care of him. He becomes as scared as you could be if you were about to be gobbled up by a tyrannosurus-rex! What happened to his faithful owner?

5-0 out of 5 stars Stray Dogs/Shelter Dogs
This book has only some examples of shelter dogs who become part of a family. Zorro,Kirby,Ian,Tracker, and Joey are some of the characters, or dogs, in this wonderful book. Kirby is a westie who's owner died. Kirby was left alone in his house without food or water for seven days before he was discovered. When People came to get him, he snarled and snapped. They could not put him up for adoption. Right before they put him to sleep, while they were trying to get a leash on him, a woman asked if he would like to go for a walk. When he heard that word, he turned into an affectionate, loving pup. That was one example of the interesting stories in this book. With shelter dogs who become seizure alert dogs, actors, and family dogs, this is truly a great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars shelter dogs
Zorro,Tracker,Kirby,Joey,These are a few of the amazing dogs I read about in Peg Kehrets book called Shelter dogs . Amazing storys of adopted stays. This book will take your heart away when you read how these dogs survide there tragical lives. This story is about dogs that were given to the Humane Society because the owners cn't take good care of them.

I liked this book because it taught lessons on responsibility, trust, and courage. I would recommend this book to others because if you're a dog lover you'll like it. It teaches good lessons about being nice to animals. My favorite story was about a dog named Zorro. Zorro was a very big dog with a lot of energy. He had something called kennel cough. Zorro was a very loving and caring dog and thats what I liked.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shelter Dogs: Amazing Stories of Adopted Strays
Shelter Dogs: Amazing Stories of Adopted Strays is the coolest book ever. I checked it out of my school library tons of times, and I read Shelter Dogs: Amazing Stories of Adopted Strays about 5 or 6 times and it got better each time. This book is a really easy book to read, but it is really sad too. I know these are true stories, but if you would go to the humane society you probilty will not get as good of a dog as these people did, in the book so I think Peg Kehret should have put at least one dog in her book that was not as good. But it was still a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shelter Dogs Amazing Stories of Adopted Strays
If you like to read books about dogs, this book would be great for you! This book has eight stories about amazing dogs, who have gone to the animal shelter and have been adopted. One dog was kept in a locked house, because his owner had died in the hopsital and the dog was forgotten. Then someone found him and brought him to the shelter. The dog wouldn't let anyone touch him, open his kennel or do anything with him. One day a helper at the shelter, asked the dog "do you want to go for a walk?" - ever since then the dog has been nice to everyone. I'm sure that if you like to read about dogs, this book would be great for you. ... Read more
