5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful and comforting tribute for dog owners
A friend whose little dog 'Max' was killed by a car was the recipient of this book after I ordered it and read it myself. It is beautifully illustrated and very profound. My friend wrote, "losing my precious Max was like losing my child. I felt like I would never have a dog again but after reading "For Every Dog an Angel" I know now that I need another. She went to the pound the next day and adopted a dog. I will order more just to have on hand for my pet-loving friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Every Dog an Angel
I have never lived without a pet in my life since the day I was born. For the first 18 years of my life I had only owned dogs. From then on I have had dogs and cats, but I had one special dog who was and always will be my "forever dog". Reading that book gave me hope that we will be together again someday. He has been in heaven 15 years now and I pick up and read that book at least once or twice a month. It has helped me to deal with the loss of my best friend and I know he is always watching over me.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has a special meaning to young and old
As a 60-something physician I first read this book. I have recommended it to many of my adult patients who have lost a pet as one of the most valuable sources of comfort that is available to help them get through their grief period. This not just a children's book. It's text should be considered gentle, not juvenile.
Christine Davis has provided a valuable service by writing this book. I was happy to see that a companion piece for cats has also been published. Thank you, Christine, for helping us cope with the profound loss of a companion.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you need to read this book, I'm so sorry
Oh my! This is ABSOLUTELY the most comforting book I have ever read. My "forever dog", Molson, died of leukemia, and we read this book together on a daily basis until I had the strength to release him. No books, no websites; no friends, no other could have helped us transition more then this book. I now keep at least three copies available at home to give to others who experience the absolute, inconsolable loss of a dear friend and companion. Like everything, it can't obliterate the hurt, but it can SURELY raise the hope. BRAVO! and Thank You!

1-0 out of 5 stars For kids only - not adults
This is a wonderful book for kids. I am an adult over 50 and was very disappointed with this book. It brought me no comfort over the loss of my dog, it took a dog's passing too lighthearted. It is definitely recommended reading for children to understand the loss of their pet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a super cute book!
I checked this book out of the library for my 16 month old son. He absolutly loves this book! It quickly became his "lovey" and he carries it everywhere. So I knew I had to own a copy of this book and have it on hand, before the library's copy was due back! The mice are drawn so cute! There's mice on almost every page, some are bigger and some are smaller. My son points out all the mice on all the pages, even the small somewhat "hidden" mice. They story has great rhyming text, it's great for learning animals too. The story is about pet shop animals and it says how the other animals smell, are loud, or shed...but mice make the best pets! After reading this book, when my son's older...I can see him asking for a pet mouse! Ha ha.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for young children
This is one of my son's favorite books. It is very well written and the rhymes in it flow nicely. I recommend this book to anyone with children who are learning to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Stars
Beautiful illustrations and great rhyming text! Perfect for beginning readers. BUY IT!

5-0 out of 5 stars A hit in Kindergarten!
I am a kindergarten teacher. My children look forward to "story time" each day. When I read this book to them, they enjoyed the humor. Now, each day, they want me to read the book again. Also, they ask to borrow the book during "DEAR" time, and read it on their own. This book is fantastic! Thanks you to Charles Ghigna! Not only is he a wonderful children's author but he is also my cousin!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally he likes to read!
My son Nathan is very stubborn and doesn't like to look at "words"...just pictures. Until now! This book has enticed him to look at the word to tell him about what is going on in the picture. For example one page may say "snake" when you see the snake and another page used the word "boa". So he looks at the letters as clues for what to say....Hooray! He may just read one day afterall! Thanks you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable children's book!
Without a doubt this is one of the best books for very young readers and parents to share. It is so cute! The story is amusing and the pictures are wonderful. I like the drawing of the Borzoi (Russian wolfhound) myself. Totally great and recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Putter and Tabby Walk the Dog
Simple language and a hilarious storyline make this book perfect for the voracious or the reluctant reader. Mr. Putter and his cat tabby are a delightful pair, and their encounter with the neighbor's nightmare pooch will have kids laughing aloud. The accompanying illustrations only add to the text.

Perfect for children to read on their own, or with the help of a parent (because parents will find these stories equally charming). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Series for the Only Child
This long and growing series is terrific for all kids, but especially only children. Although Henry has no siblings and his best friends are his dog Mudge and his cousin Annie (also an only, apparently in a one-parent household), with the exception of the first book, the series does not dwell on his sibling-free status. It simply presents a well-adjusted kid enjoying a wide range activities. Henry is constructive with his time (but not so much as to be unrealistic; see "Henry and Mudge and the Long Weekend"), sociable, not prone to loneliness and never portrayed as pining for a little brother or sister. As the parent of an "only", I find the whole series great for subtly conveying an affirmative message without beating it over the head.
To be sure, Henry's is a somewhat idealized, white-kid, small-town life and the books are not entirely p.c. - the illustrations of the family car never seem to picture seat belts and Henry's diet apparently includes lots of hot dogs, potato chips and refined sugar. But as part of a wider reading program, Henry and Mudge provide a great series of simple chapter books to be read to youngsters or read by beginning readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a party!
My children love this book. My 2 year old wanted this for hisbedtime story every night for 2 weeks. It is still one of hisfavorites. His 4 year old sister loves all of the Henry & Mudge books, but she especially loves this one. She keeps asking if we can have a pinata at her party. I like it because it is short enough for the whole book to be a bedtime story. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars what i think about thsi book
I thought that this book was a good book for little kids because it teaches you manner and responsibilty. This book used a good way to teach you good manners. It made learning good manners fun.

3-0 out of 5 stars this was ok
this book was ok i mean if you were a little kid you would like it but it does sorta teach you manners

5-0 out of 5 stars best book we ever bought
Though (. . .) some of the examples being a bit odd for a preschooler, it's been one of the best books we ever bought for our son (then 2 yrs, now almost 4.) Our son absolutely adors Clifford and we use him (and the book) as a role model. When he starts, or does, something naughty, we'll ask, "Would Clifford do that?" Sounds kinda hokey, but it works.
I so highly recommend this book and have bought it for others as a gift.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Useful Way to Help Introduce Manners to Children
The idea of having Clifford, the Big Red Dog, demonstrate good manners is full of potential fun. Obviously, we all hope Clifford has good manners, because the alternative is too scary to think about!

The book opens with this idea: "Everyone loves Clifford because he has good manners. I taught him myself," says Emily Elizabeth. You will probably want to reinforce the idea that manners are desirable by pointing out some of their other benefits, such as being the right thing to do, avoiding fights, making everyone feel respected, and helping everyone have a better time. The book emphasizes what to do more than why to do it. But parents and grandparents need to have some role in providing help with the social graces.

The book covers saying please and thank you, writing thank-you notes for presents, waiting for one's turn, picking up one's own trash, saying "excuse me" when stepping in front of others, not talking in movies, using a handkerchief when sneezing, sharing toys with friends, putting toys away, following rules (in playing tennis?), talking when angry rather than hitting, being a good sport (smiling when lose and not boasting when win), calling ahead before visiting, arriving on time, knocking before opening a door, wiping shoes before going in, shaking hands or kissing when greeting people, washing before eating, chewing with a closed mouth, not talking while chewing, helping clean up, and saying good-bye and thank you after a visit.

By having Emily Elizabeth support all of these behaviors and having taught them to Clifford, the book sets it up as an expectation that every child should do the same. That's a nice way to establish these practices as the norm, independent of a parent's speaking in favor of them.

The book's weakness is that some of the situations in the examples won't make much sense to young children (movie theaters, playing tennis, writing thank you notes before they can write, and visiting one's sister who lives in another residence). But you can talk about those, and add some new ideas into your youngster's life.

The biggest missed opportunity is that many of the illustrations could have been much funnier. Obviously, there's a fine line here that should not be crossed because a lot of slap-stick could undermine the messages. But just a teeny bit more humor would have tickled my fancy, and made the material more memorable and interesting.

After you finish enjoying this book with your child, I suggest that you think about other examples of good manners that you appreciate providing. For example, even in these egalitarian days, it's still nice to open a door, pull out a chair, and to compliment someone. What parts of the social graces do you most enjoy receiving? Be sure to pass them along, as well.

After you, if you please!

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly useful!
My 4 year old daughter found this book very interesting for a few weeks. I didn't like some of the examples it used, but only because they required a lot of explanation. It gave us a good starting point to talk about some manners, but also things like movies and the game of tennis. My daughter had never been to a movie before, so Clifford's advice not to disturb others needed some explanation. And showing a game of tennis to preschoolers seemed odd to me, to suggest playing by the rules! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Arthur Gets His New Puppy
[...]. It is a good book for kids because it helps kids read. It is funny. Arthur gets a new puppy because his mother said he could. Arthur had to give five dollars for the puppy. Arthur was happy to have a puppy. He had been watching a puppy that gave birth to a litter of new puppies and Author got to keep one. I think everyone would enjoy this story, especially if you like puppies!

5-0 out of 5 stars Children identify with Arthur
While children love reading fantastic stories of dragons oraliens or dinosaurs, that doesn't mean they don't also enjoy readingbooks featuring kids just like them.

Or, in the case of the popular Arthur books, aardvarks just like them. Arthur's New Puppy is the eighteenth book in the best-selling series. It follows the misadventures of the lovable aardvark as he attempts to housebreak his bouncy puppy Pal.

Children seem to identify with Arthur as he struggles with everyday problems with the help of his loving parents (and no help from his pesky little sister, D.W.) and friends.

If you have an Arthur fan in the house, or if you have a new puppy in the house, you'll want to check out this book.

Baby and Bunny pop bubbles, look at books, wear beads, and chase each other through pretty fields and purple gardens. With its soft yellows, violets, and greens, this delicately decorated story about friendship lost and found unfolds in fewer than five words per page."Baby touches Bunny's nose." "Bunny chases a ball." All goes well, everyone's getting along swimmingly... until "Bunny hops away."Will Baby find Bunny? Only time and a few lovely pages will tell. The mother-daughter team of Adele Aron Greenspun and Joanie Schwarz has created a simple, sweet tale with few words and soft photographs of a sweater-clad baby and a droopy-eared bunny--both real, both adorable. Each picture is elaborately framed with hazy, dreamlike backgrounds of rolling meadows and distant woodlands. There's not much of a story here, but it won't matter; pre-readers will love the unusual pictures and realistic, unembellished language. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Delightful
My one-yar-old son loves this book!

In this delightful book, Baby and Bunny play together, get separated and reuinte. The large text goes left to right with few words on a page. The photographs of Baby and Bunny have been enhanced by the author's daughter, Joanie Schwarz, and have a soft, Victorian look full of emotion.

I do not tire of reading this book and looking at its pictures over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars So engaging
Although the recommended age level for this book is higher, my one-year old daughter loves it. The photographs are so clear and engaging to her; she loves to mimic the baby pictured. It also reinforces new words in her growing vocabulary (nose, toes, ball, etc.) It is a sweet story that encourages reading to your children. Our active child sits still to see where Bunny turns up every time!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for all young children
We have a four year old and an 18 mnonth old and they both love this book. The pictures are beautifully simple, as is the text. My four year old loves the part when the baby loses the bunny (a beautiful image of the baby crying), and rejoices when she finds him again. My youngest likes the rhyme of the text, and the simple pictures. This is a really great book - I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable
I purchased this book the first time I saw it in the bookstore because the lop is identical to my own lop. I used it in the classroom for a story prompter, and to help explain descriptive words, it worked wonders. This book had a short life due to the love that it received in the classroom. I have already ordered my third copy of it. A definite must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Every baby I've met loves this book dearly.
Of the hundred-plus books my two children (3 and 2) have, they always return to the Barefoot Books' "Mother Goose Remembers" and this one. "Bunny and Me" is charming and lovely, with careful and non-cheesy photography/artwork. The baby's face (and the lop-eared bunny's, too) is full of expression: amusement, curiosity, sadness, joy, contentment. There's a simple story the child experiences with the baby: baby and bunny, baby loses bunny, baby finds bunny, baby and bunny are happy. The text rhymes simply without strain, and babies are delighted by lines (with accompanying images) like "baby wears beads/bunny wears beads" and "bunny kisses baby's doll/baby laughs." Every baby and small child I've encountered gravitates to this book and can't read it often enough. ... Read more

Imagine taking primary colors to places they have never been before. That's the experience I felt when sharing this book to young readers. Because of the style and kid-friendly theme, it was a huge success at my child's read-in day! Impressive, especially for a first time author/illustrator. I am looking for more. Hope to see them soon!

Book Description

Today Riley’s family is celebrating Jasper’s Day. Everything they do will be in honor of Jasper — sort of like a birthday. But it isn’t Jasper’s birthday. The old dog’s cancer has gotten really bad. Riley knows they can’t let him suffer any longer, but letting go will be the hardest thing he’s ever had to do.

Marjorie Blain Parker’s tender story is filled with smiles, tears and the joy of special memories; Janet Wilson’s gentle pastels capture the depth of love shared by a boy and his dog. Together, they speak of acceptance, remembrance and the importance of cherishing life’s every moment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 hankie book
If you are a dog lover, I recommend you buy this book. I also recommend you read it in private so you can cry in peace. It is a beautifully written account of the last day of a Golden Retriever who's family is giving him one special day before he must take one last trip to the vet. Written from the perspective of Jasper's "boy", it is heart warming and realistic in dealing with the pain of losing a beloved dog.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for all ages
This book is a must read for all ages. Touches the heart, and takes the reader back to long forgotten feelings and memories. Sweet and poignant. Arlene Millman, author of BOOMERANG - A MIRACLE TRILOGY (The tale of a remarkable Boston Terrier).

5-0 out of 5 stars Tender and wonderful story for dog lovers
I am a book reviewer for a large newspaper and an author of numerous books, so I see MANY books come across my desk. When this one did, it stopped me right there. I found myself feeling many buried emotions from losing my own dogs and bolstering the feelings I have for my two present buddies. This book is wonderfully told and beautifully rendered. It is a very sad (ala Where the Red Fern Grows) book, but provides a moment of therapy as well. Overall, it is a celebration of the wonderful relationship shared with "man's best friend".

5-0 out of 5 stars Family Favorite
Jasper's Day is a not only a must for every dog owner of the world, it is also a must if you own or have ever owned and lost a pet. This is a perfect addition to every home library. Not only is it a tender engaging story, but it can be used to help kids understand and work through their own feelings of loss and grief.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can't read this story without a tissue.
This is a touching story about a boy Riley who wants to make his retriever Jasper's last day very special. Together the family celebrates what a great companion Jasper has been by visiting many of the places that have been special to him. I would read this story along with my child. Although sad, it is a sweet story of a family's love and respect for a dog they certainly viewed as a member of the family. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome

The dog helps keep the family warm in the winter by pulling heavy logs across the frozen ground for the fire and he helps Maggie's father catch fish in the summer. Maggie knows Sirius is her best friend so when a law is passed to get rid of non-shepearding dogs like Sirius Maggie is determend to keep him hidden and safe. But when a ship crashes into the icebergs of Newfoundlan with 100 passengers a board the circumstances change. The rescue crews can't get to the boat because of the huge waves. Maggie knows that only Sirius can make the long swim out to the boat to get a saftey rope to them. But would bringing her dog out of hidding mean the death of him.
This was one of the best books I've read in my life I could not put it down. As a result I was up all night. The book was just awesome

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Crafted
Because I've read rave reviews of Star in the Storm, (and some of the "disappointing" reviews here on Amazon) I read the story with a a critical eye. I found myself drawn into a beautifully crafted story with one main character which made the book easy-to-read and focused for the age level. The historical aspects and descriptions of Newfoundland are fascinating and undoubtedly accurate. The dog is a lovable and loyal companion. My students are totally engrossed in the book and I can see why it has nominated and won so many awards, including many states' "Readers' Choice." (Here in Michigan 4th and 5th graders have chosen STAR IN THE STORM as their favorite book -- hands down!) This book is exciting with cliffhangers ending each chapter which encourages young readers to keep on reading! More importantly it shows a child making a self-sacrificing descision. Children will grow and identify with this unselfish girl and they will cheer as she makes the right choices. I'm reading Ms. Harlow's JOSHUA'S SONG now and while it is different from STAR IN THE STORM, it is another well-crafted story with an intruging protagonist who must make hard choices, too. Writing is an art, and these books are works of art in every sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books i have ever read!
Star in the Storm was really adventurous. Star in the storm is the kind of book that is not easy to put down. i would recommend this book to anybody who loves a happy ending or anyone who loves dog stories where the dog doesn't die. I think star in the storm is a great story.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Predictable
This book was ok, but a bit dry & predictable.I recently read to my son another book about a Newfoundland dog that he enjoyed better called "Wild Man Island" by Will Hobbs. It is fast paced w/out being confusing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Star in the Storm
The book I reviewed is Star in the Storm. The auther is Joan HiattHarlow. This book is realistic fiction and is based on a true story. This book does not have that many pages. It has 150 pages.
This book takes placein Bonnie Bay, Newfoundland. It all started when a law was passed that only sheep dogs were allowed. A girl named Maggie had a dog that was not a sheep dog. Maggie tried to hide her dog. Then a ship gets stuck out at sea, Maggie knows her dog can safe them but will Maggie let him?

I personally liked this book because it was about dogs and I love dog books. This book also really cought my attention. In this book something is always happening. I recommend this book to a middle school reader and to someone who really likes dog a lot. This book will keep a reader engrossed from start to finsh. Read this amazing book Star in the Storm! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
I found this book in the school library when I was in 3rd grade. Upon reading it, it became my favourite book of all time (still is.) Even as an adult I would go to the kids' section of the library and check this book out every year or two. I haven't read it in a long time, but am looking forward to owning it now. I named my cat after the dog in this book. This is a great story for sensitive, animal-loving children.

5-0 out of 5 stars left a life-long impression
I read this book when I was in third grade (25 years ago). Unlike many books I read as a child, I've never re-read this but have always meant to. Part of the reason I've never read it is that I always forget the title. Someone on my children's literature list knew the book and I made it a point to write it down right away. The other reason I haven't re-read it as an adult is that I've never come across a used copy at a yard sale, book store, etc. Maybe nobody ever wants to part with theirs! Honestly, all I remember from reading this book was it is about a lost dog. But it made such an impression on me as a child. It really moved me in the way that Black Beauty moved me. And the memory of the feelings the story envoked have lasted with me always. I look forward to finally re-visiting this little gem.

This book is a very very adventurous book . The dog in the story is lost and goes to many different places to find his home. When the dog goes out to get something or play he is always in a different place that he does'nt now where he is. this book is kinda like a mystery. This book has many different steps to it and the dog and the different kinds of people that keep the dog and then loses the dog. The dog starts out with a family with two kids, agirl and a boy. The dog goes to the kids grandparents house and gets lost. That's the first time the dog gets lost. Then the dog found an old lady and she took the dog in, later the lady had a wreck with her horse and the dog walk over to the other side of the road. The then goes to the pound and an old man gets the dog. Find out if the dog gets lost again by reading the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book you will remember for years!
I first read this book in junior high. It is now thirty some years later and I am ordering it to read again. I am sure that my children will enjoy and remember it like I have. This is a "must read" for anyone who loves animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forty years later
Hurry Home Candy was such a significant read of my childhood - the fear of abandonment and the joy of being loved experienced and retold through the emotions of a dog! A special book, timeless, universal themes sharply observed and wonderfully illustrated. I recommend for all grown up children who enjoyed Hurry Home Candy to read the recently published "Timoleon Vieta Come Home" by Dan Rhodes - Canongate Books 2003. ISBN 1 84195 389 X. This book is special too. Check it out. ... Read more
