5-0 out of 5 stars Great Illustrations, wonderful story!!
I really enjoyed McDuff moves in. The illustrations are wonderful.. Only Westie owners could have done them so well. Any dog owner would enjoy this book. Its really not just for small children. I love the way its set in the past, looks like the 1940s to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
I own this book, as well as others in the series. They are just great! My mom owns a Westie, perfectly named Duffy(he got the name before we new about the books), and the illustrator captures the essence of the Westie. Every picture is perfectly drawn to show the character of a Westie. I love the author as well. I have been a teacher and have always read Ms. Wells' books to my students and the McDuff series is loved by all. McDuff moves in is just a fun book to read and I recommend it to all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ashleigh LOVED this Rosemary Wells book!
I am a 2nd grader. My name is Ashleigh. I have been reading books by Rosemary Wells. My favorite book is McDUFF MOVES IN. I like this book because it makes me feel happy when McDuff finds a home.

I am a 2nd grader at Anna Merritt Elementary School. My name is Ashleigh. I have been reading books by Rosemary Wells. My favorite book is McDUFF MOVES IN because it makes me feel happy when McDuff finds a home.

5-0 out of 5 stars A stylish, happy-ending book for toddlers
Our toddler loves McDuff Moves In. I like to think it's because of the stylish, 1920's-era illustrations. The colours and images are unlike those of any other books in our collection. The matt colours are perfect for the wet, night setting. Art Deco textiles, wallpaper and hair styles make it even more interesting.

The illustrations are backed up by great text. Frequent animal sounds like "Woof!" and "Hiss!" make it fun to read aloud, and a perceptive two year-old will join in. The dialogue is interesting, and I found myself experimenting with inflection. It's nice to change things a little on the 60th time through!

If you are looking for a book with a difference, try McDuff Moves In. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Clifford book
My daughter received this book as a gift when she was around 18 months of age.We started reading it as the last story before bedtime and it became part of the routine.Like most children our daughter thrives on routine and we continue to read this book at bedtime today (she is 3 1/2).Now she pretends to read it to us as she long ago memorized the words. We have all the Clifford The Small Red Puppy Board Books, but this one stands out.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect bedtime story
Clifford's Bedtime is our favorite "Small Red Puppy" board book. Every child (and parent) can identify with Clifford's bedtime needs: his blanket and favorite toys, a drink of water, and a good-night kiss. Norman Bridwell's simple illustrations are a perfect accompaniment to this story, which you will soon be able to recite by heart! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read with valuable tips
As a former exhibitor in junior showmanship, as well as an active present day exhibitor in the conformation ring at dog shows, I found this book to be valuable. The book was an easy, enjoyable read, yet full of useful tips. After reading this book I kept it near my training area to remind myself of the things I wanted on with the dogs, having earmarked those items for easy reference, especially the fancy turn on the down and back. I recommend this book not only for juniors, but also for active exhibitors.

2-0 out of 5 stars Helpful to the Novice
Although I find Connie Vanacore's book more helpful and informative, this book was alright as far as Junior Handler books go. I found that her stories tended to end with her winning, which is not how juniors always is. I'm not saying she sounded arrogant or anything, but I think maybe she could have been a bit more realistic sometimes. Some of the information was dated, but so it is in many other books. Overall, it was ok. I am a junior right now, and although it didn't seem to offer much to the more experienced junior, it could definitely offer something to the novice in the field. It was a tie between 2 and 3 stars, they just don't offer half-stars on here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this one!
This is a great book, I recommed it to anyone who wants to learn how to compete in Jr. Show or just wants to learn to handle! This book is written by a past winner in Jr. Showsmanship, so you really get the scoop on the judges and what they want to see. This book is also great for someone who is already showing in Jr. Showsmanship (like me) and wants some great tips!- buy this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Junior Handler is the ''Best''!!!
I think this is a well written easy to understand helpful book. There are a lot of up and coming jr handlers out there and this book would help them and others just starting in the show ring.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book on the subject
The book, Best Junior Handler, states in it's preface that it is basically a text book for the junior handler. The subject matter covers everything from choosing a breed to competing at Westminster as well as history on the event. There is a chapter with information for the more experienced handler. The manner in which Ms. Olejniczak handles the the subject is very relaxed and talks to you rather than at you. She tries to encourage juniors with anecdotes of her own experiences (especially negative ones) during her career, to not only provide comfort to those who have bad days when they or their dogs didn't do well, but also to encourage them to keep on trying when it seems the odds are against them. Junior Handling is just that, HANDLING the dog. This book stresses the importance of the relationship between a handler and his or her dog. However, it also provides information for the handler on how to succeed and comport themselves properly in this sport. No one enters to lose, they want to win. Ms. Olejniczak has provided helpful tips in this book for that purpose. Read it for yourself and find out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful Catbook by a wonderful writer
I think I have not had a more pleasant reading experience than sitting down next to a burning fire place, listening to my favorite antique clock ticking.. the patter of rain on the window panes and reading James Herriott. It is a memory of that afternoon that all these years later I have never forgotten. James Herriott is the most pleasant, relaxing, refreshing writer. Forget all the worries and cares and escape for a few minutes into a quiet world where the animals speak their own language.. A wonderful book, a wonderful writer. Thank You James Herriott for the memories.

4-0 out of 5 stars Oscar, Cat-About-Town
I really enjoyed reading this book. I think that anyone who reads this will feel more comfortable in nowing that many people may love them and that it is okay to have more than one "family." Many love you just the same and they can care for you in their own special way.I think Oscar is unique and even though this is just a book I respect the characters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cat lovers, take note!
Warm, homey illustrations that almost seem to glow are paired nicely with the sweet storyline. As always, James Herriott knows his animals, and can capture their essence on paper.I have known cats like Oscar, who is most definitely a "people" cat--he loves to be in the thick of things!--and reading Oscar's story was like a touch of nostalgia. If your little one loves animals, do get them this book.I have a hunch they'll like it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book with awesome illustrations!
I just "read" this book to my little sister and brotherlast night for a bedtime story, and we all loved it! It was very cute and sweet, with beautiful illustrations. There are minimal words on only about 3 pages, and the rest of it is a picture book. Great great story that leaves you smiling and laughing though! We really enjoyed it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Clever visual humor but bad role-modeling
Carl's Masquerade is a beautifully illustrated, clever and humorous book aimed at preschoolers. On page one, the parents announce that they're going to a masquerade party, and tell their Rottweiler, Carl, "take good care of the baby." Therein lies the problem. In real life, parents who leave their baby unattended by humans and go off to a party, are guilty of child neglect. But this book presents this scenario as being cute and funny. Adults and older children reading this book can make the distinction that this is inappropriate behavior in real life, but the book's young target audience cannot.

Once the parents leave for the party, Carl takes the baby to the same big party, where they get admitted because the greeter at the door thinks they're in costume. Once in the door, the story is told only with pictures. At the party, Carl and the baby (who appears to be about a year old) see many interesting costumes and have fun adventures. The pictures are quite amusing and clever, such as when Carl sees what he thinks is a cat, but is really a human in a cat costume. Visual humor is the book's major strength. Although the baby spots her parents, the parents are always looking the other way and don't see the baby. Carl manages to get the baby home and safe in her crib just before the parents come home.

Although I wish I could recommend this beautifully illustrated, clever, humorous book, I simply can't, because of the parents' irresponsible behavior. I just don't count on preschoolers being able to make a distinction that this is a fantasy. Also, it might play on fears they have of being left alone. However, it's worth a quick "read" for adults and older children to enjoy the clever visual humor of Alexandra Day.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not up to Carl's standards!
We loved our first Carl books, "Good Dog, Carl!" and "Carl's Afternoon in the Park." So, I bought several more Carl books from Amazon without previewing them. Imagine my disappointment that these books did not maintain the excellent quality provided by the first two. This book does not flow as smoothly as those forementioned. The artwork is a little more sketchy (still better than most children's books). There are some clever ideas in the book, but it is too busy to maintain a child's interest. I definitely recommend the two other books mentioned, but use caution and preview any other Carl books before purchasing them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great babysitter!
This is one of my favorites as each time I take it out it makes me smile. Carl takes baby out and "follows" mom and dad to a masquerade party. How amusing when Carl and baby meet up with an "identical" costume match at the party! Just footsteps behind the parents they partake of food and festivities and then it is time to leave and safely arrive back home. Mom and dad linger at store windows "allowing" the careful babysitter to take his charge back to bed. Some reviewers believe Day's books set bad examples, but I totally disagree. All antics are in fun and mischief. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Like flipping through a family photo album
This is a decent book, with the unusual feature of being a series of photographs rather than drawings. It tells the story of Tim and his newly acquired puppy, Charlie, and tracks their relationship as Charlie grows from a wiggly puppy into a full-grown dog.

The pictures are cute, but the story line is kind of mundane, without any fantastic elements or big adventures in the works. Still, your child might enjoy the gentle, simple story that wanders from episode to episode without a great deal of thought.

I'm not sure that this has the capacity to entertain or educate a child as well as some other books out there, but it at least provides a good model for a relationship between a young boy and his dog.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Puppy Book for Children and Adults

Lovable white pooch McDuff has a real knack for finding his wayhome--and into readers' hearts. A handy little box with a snap closure and a redhandle holds three of Rosemary Wells and Susan Jeffers's quaint, 1930s-styletales about this West Highland terrier, as well as a sheet of nine McDuffstickers. In McDuff MovesIn, the resourceful pup bounces out of a dogcatcher's truck and findshis way to a new home with a couple named Lucy and George. He manages to getlost while chasing a rabbit in McDuff Comes Home, but a niceold woman straps him into her motorcycle's sidecar and helps him find homeagain. "Only child" McDuff is in for a bit of a rude awakening in McDuff and the Baby: "Every dayin every way McDuff was happy. But one day a stranger arrived. It was a baby."McDuff needn't have worried. No one can resist his charms, even in competitionwith a newborn.

These three small read-aloud books, sized just right for a child's hands, are awonderful introduction to the dreamy, old-fashioned series by two well-lovedcreators of children's books. (Ages 2 to 5) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Daughter's New Favorites
A friend bought our two year-old "McDuff's New Friend" for Christmas, and we all liked it so much that we went out and bought this set of the earlier stories, too. These are beautifully illustrated little books, and the small format versions are perfect for our toddler's hands. McDuff is charming, and his adventures are told with an economy and subtle humor that parents can appreciate as much as the little ones. We read all three of these every day, and none of us have gotten tired of them yet.

These are great books for gifts to children or the people who read to them. They might be especially appreciated by grandparents and greatgrandparents, who will enjoy the books' mild humor and 1930s setting.

5-0 out of 5 stars AS CUTE AND AS SWEET AS IT GETS!
If you love darling little fluff-muffin dogs, it doesn't get any better than this! The cute purse-like container has McDuff's sweet face on it. Inside are three of the best McDuff books, plus stickers. Any kid would LOVE this. I bought one for myself, it was so darn cute and reminded me so much of my own precious terrier. This is the present I'm going to give every small child from now on. The illustrations of McDuff are absolutely on the mark: This illustrator REALLY knows what terriers are like--their poignant, wistful looks; the way they hold their bodies; and a million other endearing characteristics. Also, children are sure to be stimulated by these wonderfully simple but thought-provoking and unsentimental little stories about, for example, how McDuff gets jealous over a new baby, and how McDuff gets lost but finds his way home. All of the McDuff books are absolutely top-notch. They will warm your heart!

5-0 out of 5 stars McDuff warms hearts!
In the first three books of this charming series, McDuff finds his new "forever" home with a happy young couple, explores the neighborhood and deals with the homecoming of a new baby into the family. Warm, innocent and beautifully illustrated, the McDuff books capture the impish and loyal character of Westies-- and a simpler era that is a welcome antidote to our recent times. Buy them, by all means-- for adults or children of any age! ... Read more

My oldest son and I fell in love with this cat story 2 years ago and now share it daily with his younger brother. They love the rhyme, count the cats, and repeat the phrases. It's timeless and ageless, since every cat-household knows that the felines adopt us - usually when we don't expect it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Always delightful for our 3 year old!
After rechecking this book from the library 3 times in a row, we decided we had to buy it. Our 3 year old daughter LOVES this book, and asks for it every night. She can name every cat and the ending delights her each and every time we read it. Absolutely a charming book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A surprise favorite of my 3 year old
As always I was unsure of the response this would get from my three year old. After countless readings it has become one of his favorite books. He loves to laugh at the silly cats and consistently renames a couple of his favorites. It's just repetative enough to keep him coming back but always seems to be a surprise for him. I enjoy reading it to him often and find the nearly poetic text original enough to hold my interest. A great book, I would like to find more like it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yeah for Carl!
Follow Carl is a wonderful book for all fans of this special Rottweiler. He takes his charges through a fun filled day in the park. The colorful illustrations encourage the reader to embellish the story and truly have fun with this book. As the owner of two Rottweilers, all the Carl books are in my son's library! Three cheers for Carl!

5-0 out of 5 stars Carl is the leader and the children love to follow!
Having all of the "Carl" books I thought perhaps Ms. Day would run out of "things" for Carl to do. Not so. Carl has plenty to do, so much that everyone ends up napping--some of the children are positioned like little puppies. Carl, of course, is his usual self. Very entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Ms. Day's excellent, enchanting Carl books.
As usual, Ms. Day has captured the essence of Carl and the childrens' escapades. Anyone who enjoys children and dogs (especially Rottweilers)will appreciate the accuracy of both the stories, the story line, the poses, and the facial expressions of all the characters.

One of the many enjoyable Carl books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My cousin loved it!
My cousin is a bugaholic and loved this book. It definitely came in handy especially during the summer. Kudos to the author for writing a knowledgeable and readable book for my 9-year-old cousin!

1-0 out of 5 stars My Kid Loved It
Very good book about bugs that kids can keep. My son loved it and before the week was out was going around looking a bugs and telling me what they were. It's a great text for kids of reading age who want to know more about bugs and how to keep them alive so that they can study them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Natural Wonder
Who would have thought the bugs would make such great pets ? Pet bugs is an original and exciting book to introduce children and adults to the wonderful world of bugs.

Pet Bugs is a unique book of it's kind as there isn't much books around on keeping insects, after all who wants to keep a slimy bug? But this book is different. It shatters the image of "slimy bugs" and introduces these creatures as ideal pets.

Pet Bugs is a well organised and a highly detailed book. The book is divided into different chapters, and each chapter specialises in a specific kind of bug- for example butterflies. Each chapter talks about three or four bugs you can keep, with information on how to catch the bugs, where to find the bugs, how to house the creature and feed them. Information on each bug is also provided, which is easy to understand.

This is an excellent book however, if photographs where included, it could have been better.

Overall this book is for any pet lover or budding naturalist alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pet Bugs saves many lives
Pet Bugs is going to save the lives of many innocent bugs, at least in our house. It tells you how to care for them, what to feed them, and what to watch for when you're interested in learning from them. My five year old and I love the information in this book--and so will the bugs that have an improved chance at life in captivity. ... Read more

Book Description

A warm family story featuring a very lovable little dog

"The little black poodle barks at everything.
She barks at the garbagemen and the telephone.
She barks at the wind when it blows and the rain when it rains."

Her family wonders why she makes so much noise, but they don’t really mind it. All but the father, that is. He’s a writer, and the barking makes him forget what he wants to say. Then one day the little poodle is left alone with him, and something happens that changes his mind for good.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great rhyming book
...The artwork is very bright and child-friendly, and the rhyming is equally friendly. Note the rhymes/story on each page are not as short as a Dr. Seuss book. The line I gave at the top of this review is typical of what you will read on a page. Young readers may want to move on faster than you want to read, but once you've read it a few times and memorized the story flow, it's easy to get through. A great addition to a collection for toddlers.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'll teach my kid to read this book
It's a lot more fun to read to your kid if the book has humour and imagination like most of these beginner books do.Not the best but still pretty good.

1-0 out of 5 stars Another terrible abridgement
Random House has seen fit to abridge many of the great "Beginner Books" to convert them to board book format -- Dr. Seuss' ABC's, Go Dog Go, and this one (which should be, by the way, I'll Teach My Dog 100 Words). The rewritten versions take all the joy out the books -- the rhythm and rhyme is uneven, and the overall flow is choppy. Save yourself and do your kids a service by buying the originals and avoiding these board (or should I say bored) versions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Fun
My 22-month old son loves when I read him this book. Its a cute book, kind of silly, and perfect for a toddler. He points to the pictures, and now he knows what dark and light are. I totally recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Our copy is well used.
This little book has fun with words. From digging a hole to standing on top of someone's thumb, we follow along as the dog learns a lot of words and concepts. We learn opposites: dark/light, day/night, here/there; we learn colors; we learn actions: wash your ears, scratch your head, blow your nose; we learn silliness: kiss the goose, clean the zoo.

The pictures lend themselves well to pointing out objects and asking children questions. Yet they are simple enough not to be distracting.

Our one year old requests this book quite often, as did his brother well into his 2's. It's the perfect size for little hands. It travels well, too. Our oldest was able to describe the illustrations just enough that we could use the book to spur conversations while in the car, making car rides more fun. ... Read more
