Book Description

Explore the changing ideas about our Universe -- from the flat Earth to black holes.

Here is a spectacular, thought-provoking, and highly informative guide to the mysteries of the Universe. Superb full-color photography of scientific instruments, experiments, and innovative 3-D models reveals the discoveries and latest research that have transformed our understanding of the Universe. See how time and space are measured, the world's largest telescope, in Hawaii, a sonic tape measure, inside an atom, and how pulsars flicker on and off with amazing precision. Learn how far it is to the Moon, whether time can stand still, how to pop through a wormhole, how Einstein helped prove that everything is made of atoms, when the world's oldest observatory was built, and why "London Time" was introduced in 1840. Discover how the Universe is expanding, whether Schrodinger's cat is dead or alive, bouncing universes, what astronomers call "spaghettification", the difference between biotime and biospace, how ripples in spacetime happen, and much, much more. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Detailed Book
I've read alot of books about space, but this is the most detailed space book I've ever read. The part about time machines and black holes was confusing but very interesting. I had no idea it was possible to make a time machine, or is it? This book may not be right on everything but I trust it. I trust all the books I read (not including fiction books). The part about the box and the light going through was really interesting. I don't get everything in the book, but I still liked it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is extrodinary (and makes you think a lot.)
Eyewitness Time & Space tells about many time theorys as well as space theorys (actually, they are one, also known as "spacetime" as it metions in the book.) This book tells about the history of time and space and how people have dealed with it over the milleniums and centuries, bio-space and bio-time, and spacetime laws. It even talks about going "across the universes". This means there are parallel dimensions happening trillions at a time when someone makes a choice and goes up that "root" in time, also known as "quantam universes". Sound confusing enough? There's also a chapter at the end of the book that says how you can create a time machine, but it would be really difficult, becuase it says you need a black hole. This book is facinating, yet it may be confusing to some people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids...
I got this book from the kids' section at our public library to help with some research I was doing. I haven't been a kid in decades, but I still absolutely loved Time & Space. Today, after having renewed the library book three times, I decided to order it from Amazon. It's something I want in my permanent library. I do not have a scientific mind, but that's okay. This book is written for the non-Einsteins among us.

5-0 out of 5 stars CONFUSING, yet interresting
I had to make a report on black holes and time traveling. I read this book knowing nothing about scientific theories, trying to search for knowledge on the topic. It helped me a lot. It showed me how a time machine can be build. HOWEVER, it didn't based this theory on much. I was left dazed and confused. When I asked teachers to help me understand, they said it was just IMPOSSIBLE! Should this book be categorized as fiction? I hope not. My grade depends on it! ... Read more

Book Description

Twenty-four creative, teacher-tested experiments entice students in grades 6 through 8 to explore firsthand the properties of the three states of matter--and the concepts of the changes of state between them--using toys and other everyday materials. While learning about the properties of solid, liquid, and gas, students will attempt to get a balloon into a bottle, watch a marshmallow expand and contract inside a syringe, boil water with ice, and much more. Developed with funding from the National Science Foundation, these ready-to-use, reproducible activities are designed to meet--and are clearly referenced to--the National Standards for Science Education. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Your Professional Science Teaching Library
Terrific Science Press has published several excellent books that I know of: Teaching Chemistry with Toys (grades K-9), Teaching Physics with Toys (grades K-9), and Exploring Energy with Toys (grades 4-8). I use them all with gusto, and I looked forward to receiving Investigating Solids, Liquids, and Gases with Toys (middle school). I was not disappointed.

The book begins with 13 pages of content review that includes excellent graphics, tables, and graphs. This is followed by an 8 page section on pedagogical strategies. The heart of the book, of course, is the set of 24 activities, evenly distributed between states of matter and changes of state. Each activity is clearly laid out with the following sections: time required, key science topics, student background (if required), national science education standards, additional process skills (for some activities), materials - for getting ready - for the procedure - for the extensions, safety and disposal, getting ready, introducing the activity, procedure, variations and extensions, explanation, assessment suggestions, cross-curricular integration, and handout masters that are worth the price of the book even if you already do some of these activities. Excellent graphics add to this outstanding resource. Nice extras at the end of the book include 6 masters for assessment models and a list of suppliers for materials that might need to be ordered. (Most of the activities use common materials.)

Activities: (1) Properties of Matter (2) BedBugs (3) Mystery Eggs (4) Balloon in a Bottle (5) Burping Bottle (6) Tissue in a Cup (7) Showing That Air Has Mass (8) Marshmallow in a Syringe (9) Moving Molecules (10) Non-Newtonian Fluids (11) Rock Candy Crystals (12) Crystals from Solutions (13) Crystals by Freezing (14) Boiling Water in a Paper Pot (15) Boiling Liquids in a Syringe (16) Boiling Water with Ice (17) Liquid to Gas in a Flick (18) Disappearing Air Freshener (19) A Cool Phase Change (20) Using Dry Ice to Inflate a Balloon (21) The Phase Changes of Carbon Dioxide (22) Balloon-into-a-Flask Challenge (23) Crushing an Aluminum Can (24) Hats Off to the Drinking Bird

One more thing: I also think that many of these activities could be done at the high school level, although you might choose to modify the hand-out questions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New uses for old toys
My kids got tired of their toys. i got tired of buying them new ones. So I found this book and discovered through it....new uses for the toys they already had. It was like buying all new toys. I cannot recommend this book enough if you don't want to go out and buy new toys. And, it teaches kids the science behind the toys, which is an added benefit.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is Fun +++++
I bought this book at a bookstore and liked the content. It is a very easy to use book to use with children. I have used it with my kindergarten kids and my kids who are older at home. There are so many good ideas and concepts to learn that even we teachers can learn from it! I like the book very much...in fact so much that I am going toget this author's other books through Amazon!

My kids got tired of their toys. We do not have the money to buy new ones, so my eye caught this book. I LOVE IT!!!. The book gives a whole new adventure to our kids toys. They not only learned some important science concepts with them...they now look at all of their toys and try to think of other ways to use them. This book saved me money and taught my children some important academics! I highly recommend! ... Read more

Book Description

Albert Einstein did not impress his first teachers. They found him a dreamy child without an especially promising future. But some time in his early years he developed what he called "wonder" about the world. Later in life, he remembered two instances from his childhood--his fascination at age five with a compass and his introduction to the lucidity and certainty of geometry--that may have been the first signs of what was to come. From these ordinary beginnings, Einstein became one of the greatest scientific thinkers of all time. This illuminating biography describes in understandable language the experiments and revolutionary theories that flowed from Einstein's imagination and intellect--from his theory of relativity, which changed our conception of the universe and our place in it, to his search for a unified field theory that would explain all of the forces in the universe. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Size Biography
Usually, I find Biographies long and dull, but this biography of Einstein held my interest. It wasn't too long, and the details it included were quite interesting. I also enjoyed learning about his different proofs and theorms. However, I think the author assumed wrong on one of mysteries of Einstein. Jeremy Bernstein wrote out what he thought was Einstein's proof of the pythagorean theorm, since Einstein never wrote it down. I found a simple error in his mathematics. Besides this, the book is very informative.I would highly reccomend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars A short biography
This is a short biography of Einstein. It is very easy and joyfull to read. It is not very serious biography, it does not go into details, double lined short stories, cover major stages of his life. I recommend to all who wants a brief summary but nice one. I read it in one day, you do not want to drop the book. Very nice. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great idea, flawed in practice
This is a great idea--a floating book that a baby can gnaw on, bring to the bath, and so on. The problem is that the seam all along the edge of the book is quite sharp, so that whenever our little one would try to mouth it, his face would get scratched up. I'm also a little worried about what would happen if he caught the edge in his eye, so there is no way that we would let him play with it unsupervised. All in all, this is too much of a concern for me to recommend this product. It says "newborns and up"--I don't think this is a good toy for a newborn. ... Read more
